The AVA is a rather simple, tablet-like device. It mainly consists of two arching yellow handles (decorated with cyan runes in Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal) which fit together. These handles can be slid apart to reveal a transparent blue touchscreen.

Features and traits[]

The AVAs are similar to videophones. While primarily used a communication device,[1] capable of live video communication between other AVAs, it has functions similar to that of a computer was well. For example, it possesses a database that can store various files, such as video recordings and selfies. It can also download and display files and run programs for deciphering damaged files. It can also scan the environment to reveal passages and objects invisible to the naked eye.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric[]

In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, the AVA was seemingly given to Team Sonic by Q-N-C at the Mines to help them find the Shock Crystal. Later, Tails download Lyric's map for the Chaos Crystals' locations in Lyric's Weapon Facility into the AVA so they could use it to find the remaining Chaos Crystals.

In gameplay, AVA serves as the main menu of the game, from where the player can view their collection of collectible items, The Logbook Map of a given location, exit the menu and more. In the levels, the AVA also allows the user to detect hidden passageways and secrets that normally cannot be seen with the naked eye. When used, the screen glows with a tint of blue. If there are any breakable walls or objects blocking a secret passage, they become transparent while the AVA is active. The AVA can also be used to reveal Shinies by showing the Shiny trails leading to them.

To change the view, the player must move the GamePad around or use the Right Stick. While the AVA is in use however, the player cannot move the playable characters. In Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, a set of AVAs were discovered by Amy and Tails at some ruins Amy was investigating, which they would use for communication. During her research investigation of the Lost Crystal of Power, Amy had an AVA with her which she used to document her research and discoveries. She would also use it to contact Sonic when Lyric attacked her. During the fight, Lyric kidnapped Amy and damaged her AVA. Tails managed to retrieve the damaged footage from Amy's AVA, however, and used another AVA to decipher Amy's damaged logs, which Team Sonic used to find out where to look for Amy

In gameplay, the AVA is used to display the Adventure Map on the bottom screen of the Nintendo 3DS or the menu when the game is paused. Additionally, the thirty-ninth toy the player obtains from Q-N-C's Toy Shop will be a figurine of the AVA.
