The Ancient Gears are objects that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. They are seven gear-like relics Dr. Eggman sought for his Mega Drive project.

Description[]

Appearance[]

The Ancient Gears, as their name suggests, are seven bronze-colored gears with runes on them and glowing, light blue lines in their cardinal directions.[1]

Features and abilities[]

Said to possess an untold power, the Ancient Gears can be used as a power source for machines, much like the Chaos Emeralds.[1] Ancient Gears can also supercharge any machine they are inserted into; a single Ancient Gear increased Metal Sonic’s speed and strength to the point where he could defeat Sonic in a one-on-one fight.[2]

History[]

Sonic: Mega Drive[]

Years ago, Dr. Eggman learned of the Ancient Gears and attempted to collect them to use them a power source for his Mega Drive. Searching the Eastwatch Islands, Eggman found six Ancient Gears, only to lose them to Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, Amy Rose, and Knuckles the Echidna after a series of battles.[1] Luckily for Eggman, Metal Sonic arrived on the scene and took back five Ancient Gears, kidnapping Amy in the process. Eventually, Eggman found the final gear and used it as a power source for Metal Sonic, giving him the boost he needed to defeat Sonic. However, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles fought back and forced Metal Sonic to retreat. Seeing as Eggman had all of the Ancient Gears, the four heroes decided to find the Chaos Emeralds as a countermeasure.[2]
