Antlions are based of the insect of same name in its larva form. They have a round, dark blue torso with a yellow lower bottom and gray spikes on the side, along with red claws. They also have a round yellow head with cyan eyes and red mandibles.
In the Wii U version, Antlions have a long line of Bumpers for a tail. In the Nintendo 3DS version, they have short, segmented tails instead.
Overview
In the Wii U version, Antlions are found in Desert RuinsZone 4 and Sky Road Zone 4. When the player is using Yellow Drill underground, Antlions will come charging in from different sides or remain stationary. The player can easily drill into their heads to defeat them, but touching their Bumper tails will bounce Sonic backwards. In Sky Road Zone 4, Antlions are obstacles during the sand sliding sections, where they cannot be defeated.
In the Nintendo 3DS version, Antlions appear only in Desert Ruins Zone 2 and Sky Road Zone 1. Here, Antlions attack in different patterns, either digging around in circles or linear patterns. However, some Antlions will charge towards Sonic if they catch him behind them. Some of Antlions can also get above the ground. The player has to use the Yellow Drill on the Antlions' heads to defeat them.
The Antlion Mother is a larger variant of the regular Antlion with a larger body and smaller head that appears in the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World. It can block routes using laser beam lines.
