Dr. Eggman bombs Sonic on a steep incline, driving him to the waiting jaws of Pit Master.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

Pit Master[1] (アリジゴクメカ[2] Arijigoku Meka?, lit. "Antlion Mecha") is a character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a Master Robot created by Dr. Robotnik, who used it during the Master Robot incident.

Appearance[]

Pit Master is a antlion-like robot. Little is known of its appearance, but it is known that it is orange/red in color with black cartoonish eyes and a long body with tubes connected with blue studs. Finally, between its eyes it has two long, sharp jaws.

History[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit), Pit Master was created by Dr. Robotnik and installed in the Under Ground Zone to triturate crush Sonic the Hedgehog there. Although the robot received help from the doctor while confronting Sonic, it ended up being damaged by Robotnik himself and ultimately destroyed by his Egg Mobile.

Powers and abilities[]

Pit Master can triturate up almost anything small thanks to its jaws.

Weaknesses[]

Pit Master's jaws do not seem to be able to withstand bomb explosions as they weaken it. Also, it is not capable of chewing large things, like the Egg Mobile, and if it tries to do that, it will end up being destroyed.

Battle[]

Pit Master is the Master Robot of Under Ground Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit) and the game's first overall boss. The player faces it as Sonic the Hedgehog.

Boss guide[]

Its intro is unusual: as Sonic jumps the final Spring, he will fall into the lava. Then, Dr. Robotnik will grab him with a claw and send him to a steep valley so that Sonic will be eaten by Pit Master's jaws.

Pit Master just moves its jaws while Robotnik drops bombs to finish off Sonic as he avoids its jaws. All Sonic has to do is avoid the bombs which will move in random ways (they move the same way every time in the Master System version). The bombs damage the robot, and its jaws move faster. As Pit Master's jaws move at their fastest, Dr. Robotnik charges at Sonic. If the player manages to avoid the attack, the Egg Mobile will crush and demolish Pit Master. As Robotnik makes his escape, the player will be able to destroy the Prison Egg and move on to Sky High Zone.

Pit Master (known as the Egg Antlion) made an appearance in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is one of the first generation Super Badniks, sent alongside Coconuts to challenge Sonic the Hedgehog to a brief brawl. Luckily, Sonic tricked Coconuts into dropping bombs towards Egg Antlion which destroyed the Super Badnik, leaving Sonic with no competition.[3]
