Tails' latest plane is missing, but this one's got a tracking device - leading Sonic and Tales on a frantic flight to the Mystic Ruins. When they get there, they not only find both Robotnik and Knuckles, but a threat they hoped they'd never have to face again. Back in the city, all seems tranquil for the Mayor and Sally, but you know that can't last - and before you know it, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles are back to try to restore order. What is the mystery that threatens their very existence? Will a cocky hedgehog, a headstrong echidna and an eager fox be enough to save civilization?

Synopsis[]

Knuckles the Echidna lands in the Mystic Ruins and finds Dr. Eggman lying unconscious nearby. He wonders if he should finish Eggman off while Chaos sneaks up behind him. Meanwhile, in the Station Square Hotel, Sonic tells the Knothole Freedom Fighters that Chaos has been defeated and apologizes to Tails for losing the Tornado in the process. Nate Morgan informs Sonic that the Tornado was equipped with a tracer and hands him a device that can locate the bi-plane. Sonic and Tails head out to find their plane.

The duo make their way to the Mystic Ruins, where they find Knuckles knocked unconscious and Eggman flying away in his Egg Mobile. Knuckles stops them from chasing after Eggman, explaining that Chaos attacked him and that Tails' plane is somehow connected to the monster's return. The group heads deep into the Mysterious Cat Country, where they find Big and Froggy next to the crashed Tornado. Suddenly, whirlwind of water appears and steals the Super Emerald from the plane's wreckage. Sonic realizes that the strange storm, which was actually Chaos, is heading for Station Square.

Mayor Bullyani gives the Freedom Fighters a tour of the city's power plant. He explains that Station Square's artificial environment is maintained by six Super Emeralds held in a convenient display case. Suddenly, a torrent of water bursts from the ceiling and envelops the Emeralds, causing them to disappear. The city is suddenly flooded by a massive influx of water as Chaos emerges as Perfect Chaos. The Freedom Fighters try to alleviate the crisis, rescuing citizens from the flooded streets and buildings.

Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Big and Froggy arrive in the city just as Dr. Eggman appears in his new Eggship Destroyer. Perfect Chaos turns its attention to the battleship and destroys it in a single blast, sending Eggman plummeting into the city below. Sonic celebrates, but Knuckles reminds him that they still have to defeat Chaos. Just then, a mysterious light appears before Sonic.

After quickly showing Sonic that Chaos was a peaceful creature until echidnas invaded its home, the light reveals itself to be Tikal. She pleads for the heroes to stop Chaos without destroying him and explains that he is still connected to the city's power systems. Tikal proposes sealing Chaos in the Master Emerald, but Sonic argues that sealing him will not help and they need to quell his fury. Tikal magically steals the seven Super Emeralds out of Chaos and throws them to Sonic, who transforms into Super Sonic. Both super powered beings trade blows, but Sonic realizes that their battle is only making Chaos angrier than ever.

Trivia[]

  • According to writer Ken Penders, this story was originally intended to be published as part of Knuckles the Echidna comic series, had it not been cancelled after issue 32.[1]
  • Tikal's name is misspelled "Tical" throughout this story.
  • Perfect Chaos' first appearance in this story is based on the CGI movie played in both the opening cinematic and before the final boss fight in Sonic Adventure.
  • When Tikal appears to the cast during Perfect Chaos' rampage, she declares Chaos "Must be sealed in the Master Emerald now". This line, taken word for word from her appearance in Sonic Adventure, conflicts with the Archie Comics' attempts to mesh the existing Archie storyline with the new setting introduced by Sega in Sonic Adventure, where Chaos and Tikal were never sealed in the Master Emerald (which at that point in time had been shattered by Eggman in an attempt to feed Chaos) as they had been in the game, but the Ancient Onyx instead.
  • Between Tikal's appearance and Sonic's transformation into Super Sonic, many lines are taken directly from the Super Sonic storyline in Sonic Adventure. In this issue, they are attributed exclusively to Sonic and Tikal instead of several characters as in Sonic Adventure.

Off Panel

Sonic calls J. F. Gabrie and finds out that he moved to San Francisco to work with Sega there. Gabrie assures Sonic that he will still be editing the comics and asks the latter if he has any questions. Sonic runs all the way over to San Francisco and asks very loudly how late Fisherman's Wharf is open for. Gabrie yells at Sonic as he has told him not to do that before, while two Sega co-workers listen on and label Gabrie as "weird".

Quotes[]

Tikal: He must be sealed in the Master Emerald!
Sonic: How will that help? It won't change how he feels inside, will it? His heart will still remain in turmoil and his anger just won't vanish! He'll just be trapped forever!
Tikal: Chaos only used the negative power of the emeralds. Sonic, you should be able to harness their real power! Negative forces aren't the only way to empower the emeralds! Our positive feelings toward each other can make them work. Our hearts together form an awesome power.
