A tiny pilot aboard its flying brother.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

Armadiloid[1][2] is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, armadillo-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman, and a variant of the Turtloids.

Appearance[]

Armadiloids are based on armadillos while taking the general concept used for the Turtloids: a larger Armadiloid serves as the vessel that flies a tinier, Armadiloid standing on top of it. They are mainly colored burgundy, with gray legs and heads, and yellow chest plating. They also have cartoonish eyes, with black pupils.

Overview[]

In Sonic Mania and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, Armadiloids appear exclusively in Mania Mode's Mirage Saloon Zone Act 1, and only during Sonic, Tails, Mighty and Ray's section of the Act. In gameplay, they simply glide around in the sky, with the smaller Armadiloid commandeering the larger Armadiloid to attack the player by firing energy bullets at the playable character when at point-blank range. A Spin Attack aimed towards the tinier Armadiloid will be enough to defeat this Badnik, freeing the animal inside. The larger Armadiloid however, is indestructible, though the player can stand on it like a platform.

At the end of Mirage Saloon Zone Act 1, Sonic/Tails/Ray/Mighty are confronted by what appears to be Fang the Sniper, Bean the Dynamite or Bark the Polar Bear riding on top of a Armadiloid who will attack the Tornado, causing it to crash. Notably, Bark will achieve this by by hammering the Armadiloid to make it fire a bullet.

Powers and abilities[]

The larger Armadiloids are capable of rocket-powered flight and can shoot energy projectiles from their mouths. The smaller Armadiloid units appear to possess no powers whatsoever however.
