The BFB[1] is a miniboss-like enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, pufferfish-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman, and a variant of the Blowfish Transporter.

Appearance[]

Based on pufferfishes, the BFBs are larger Blowfish Transporters and some of the largest Badnik models that Dr. Eggman has built to date. Both Badniks look similar except for slight differences. BFBs are mostly colored cyan with a white underbelly, a flat yellow beak, red engine turbines and a pair of wing-like fins. BFBs have four missile launcher holes up front on each side and on their rear they have cyan spikes.

Overview[]

In the Wii U version and PC version of Sonic Lost World, a single BFB appears in Tropical Coast Zone ? and Sky Road Zone 3. In Tropical Coast Zone ?, a single BFB acts as the final obstacle that appears on the path. The player's only option is to avoid colliding with it by moving below it at the right time.

In Sky Road Zone 3, the player encounters another BFB which acts as a "miniboss" that must be defeated for the player to complete the Zone. In battle, the BFB will fire red missiles while moving up and down in linear patterns. After firing at Sonic, the BFB will charge towards him from the right side and then retreat to repeat the attack pattern. The player can avoid this attack by moving down at the bottom of the screen, although going completely off-screen will cost a life. To defeat the BFB, the player must knock the BFB's missiles back at it by curling into ball. After getting hit three times, the BFB will come crashing down and the player will finish the zone. Notably, the BFB does not drop any animals upon defeat.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Lost World, the BFBs are smaller and are only encountered in Sky Road Zone 2 and 3, where they are stronger standard enemies. In this version, they are fought in small areas where they can fire homing missiles at the player and create short-ranged shockwaves by slamming into the ground. Once again, defeating these Badniks is mandatory for opening Cases, which are needed to proceed with the Zones. When fighting a BFB, it takes two fully charged Focused Homing Attacks to defeat it. Alternatively, in Sky Road Zone 3, the player can defeat it with one hit by flying a Rocket into it. Notably, landing the first hit makes the BFBs grow larger. Also, upon their destruction, they release three Animals.

Powers and abilities[]

The BFBs are capable of flight and can fire explosive missiles. In addition, thanks to their size, they can create destructive shockwaves by slamming their bodies into the ground.

Trivia[]

  • Like many new enemies in all the versions of Sonic Lost World, the BFBs' name has not been listen in any official source. Instead, they are referred to as "bfb" in the game's source code.
  • Despite acting like a miniboss in the Wii U and PC version of Sonic Lost World, the BFB still counts as a standard enemy, as defeating it counts towards the enemy kill count in any missions that require the player to defeat a certain amount of enemies.
