The Beat[1] (ビート[2] Bīto?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, mite-based Badnik model that was created by Dr. Robotnik. Beats were used by the doctor to repel intruders from the Final Egg.[3]

Appearance[]

Beats closely resemble mite arthropods with pink metallic shells and gray underbellies. They have a pair of sharp needles on their bodies and crawl around with black and yellow-striped engine attachments on each side of them.

Sonic Adventure[]

FileSa beat

Various Beats surrounding Sonic in Final Egg, from Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.

In Sonic Adventure and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, Beats are encountered exclusively in Sonic's version of Final Egg. Unlike other enemies, they only appear three times in the Action Stage, during the final third of it.

In gameplay, Beats are found in giant open rooms with dozens of them waiting for the player to appear. When the player enters such rooms, all local Beats will crawl slowly towards Sonic. Once they get close enough to him, they self-destruct, damaging Sonic if he is within range. However, the player can defeat them without causing them to explode by using a Spin Attack-related move. However when some Beats are defeated, others will come out of small latches to replace them. Eventually though, these robots will stop spawning after enough are defeated. Also, Beats cannot exit the rooms in which they reside.

Unlike other Badniks, Beats do not release Animals, regardless of how they are destroyed.

Sonic Rivals 2[]

In Sonic Rivals 2, a Beat makes a cameo as one of collectible cards. The player receives this card after getting the high score for defeating the Egg Bull in Frontier Canyon Zone.

Powers and features[]

The Beats have the ability to manually detonate themselves, creating a wide explosion range.

Weaknesses[]

Beats crawl very slowly, thus capable of being outrun very easily. Also, if they are attacked, their explosions will be harmless to nearby enemies.

IDW Beat

A group of Beats, from Sonic the Hedgehog #34.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, Beats surrounded Sonic, Tails and Belle after a failed break-in into the Eggnet in an abandoned Eggman base near Windmill Village. With the Beats cornering the heroes in a confined space that prevented Sonic from speeding up, Sonic had to prepare a Spin Dash to break down the door and pave a way out.[4] That did not become necessary though, as Tails lured a Beat to detonate in front of the room's exit door and bring said door down, thus allowing the trio to escape the base.[5]
