When using Black Shield, Metal Sonic forms an indigo-colored octahedral energy field around him as defense. This shield is strong enough to withstand power blows and energy beams without breaking.[1]

Metal Sonic used the Black Shield to defend himself from Mega Man's attacks.[2] After the Super Genesis Wave, Metal Sonic would use the Black Shield as defense against Amy Rose's Piko Piko Hammer.[1]

In order to free himself from Silver the Hedgehog's psychokinesis, Metal Sonic used the Black Shield to break free.[3] Later on, Metal Sonic used the move to defend Dr. Eggman from an attack by Walter Naugus.[4]
