Bomb (produced 3235) is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. He is a small Badnik produced by Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Along with his counterpart Heavy, Bomb was to be a systems repair unit. However, due to being supplied by a Power Gem, the two robots gained sentience and consciences. Abandoning their duties to Robotnik, the two joined the Chaotix and later the Royal Secret Service.

During a mission to Robotropolis, Heavy and Bomb were reprogrammed as sleeper agents by Dr. Eggman, and activated shortly afterwards to attack Knothole. At this point, Heavy produced hundreds of copies of Bomb, all of which were programmed to detonate if Heavy was destroyed. After he was, the Bombs were de-activated by Rotor when he fired an EMP generator at them. In 3237, new versions of Heavy and Bomb were produced, but were also destroyed. However, they would later be reprogrammed and rebuilt to serve as members of Team Freedom.

Appearance[]

Bomb v1

Bomb's initial appearance, from Sonic the Hedgehog #70.

Basically, Bomb is a classic spherical red bomb with thin arms and legs. Additionally, his first model had black eyes and a mouth. In his first appearance, he wore yellow shoes with socks and gloves. In his second, his shoes and gloves are temporarily switched to brown. Later, his arms and legs were changed to blue with his gloves and shoes going back to yellow. He is also often seen in his pouch with Heavy carrying him and when he comes out, he has blue shoes and no arms. His second model has no face. He also has no fuse, but a ticker, and is changed to red and black.

History[]

Creation and defection[]

Bomb was created in 3235 along with his counterpart Heavy, both created to act as "mechanical mechanics, designed to seek out and repair damaged systems automatically". However, because Dr. Robotnik used Power Gems to power them, Heavy and Bomb developed consciousness and consciences. When the two discovered Robotnik's schemes to trap the Knothole Freedom Fighters in the Hall of Mirrors at Happyland Amusement Park, they left Robotnik and joined the Chaotix to help them stop Robotnik's plans. When Metal Sonic attacked the Chaotix, Heavy and Bomb aided in their efforts to destroy him, with Bomb attaching himself to Metal Sonic and blowing himself up. After this, Bomb later came out of Heavy with the artificial intelligence of the previous went being uploaded to the new model.[1]

Secret Service[]

Heavy and Bomb in the Secret Service

Bomb and Heavy with the Secret Service, from Sonic the Hedgehog #62.

Some time after this, Heavy and Bomb sought out a place to fit in. Due to Heavy's ability to tap into Robotnik's database, he researched information regarding Geoffrey St. John and finally went to him in Knothole to join the Royal Secret Service. Realizing their potential, Geoffrey recruited them. Bomb, along with Valdez, helped save Hershey from a cybernetic shark thanks to Valdez's quick thinking. He threw Bomb into the shark's mouth. He came out of the water moments after ward.[2]

Heavy and Bomb's first mission took them to Angel Island once again, this time to discover what had become of Queen Alicia during the Great War.[3] The Secret Service successfully discovered Queen Alicia alive though in cryo-sleep and brought her back to Knothole.[4][5]

Bomb accompanied the Secret Service in rescuing Nate Morgan from Snively, Kodos Lion, Uma Arachnis, Nack the Weasel, and the Destructix. During this time, Bomb actually misfired and caused embarrassment for both sides in the fight. He tried again and was attacked by a giant squid that attacked both sides. The third try worked, seemingly destroying the squid and Snively.[6] He also helped evacuate Mobotropolis when Shadowbots attacked the city.[7]

Shard salvaged

The Royal Secret Service discover the remains of Metal Sonic v2.5, from Sonic Universe #43.

Following Sonic and Tails' encounter with Metal Sonic v2.5, the Royal Secret Service was sent to investigate the now-dormant site where they found Metal Sonic's slagged remains. Heavy determined Metal Sonic's core programming to be part of the still functional Power Gem.[8]

Some time later, Heavy and Bomb accompanied the rest of the Secret Service to Robotropolis to locate and retrieve the missing Sword of Acorns from Dr. Eggman. During this mission, the entire team was captured by Shadowbots. During their time in captivity, Eggman had each prisoner brought out one at a time to seem like they were being interrogated. In reality, this was a ruse to get Heavy and Bomb out of sight so he could use Nanites[9] to reprogram them as sleeper agents. Following this, Bomb blew up the jail's walls and enabled the Secret Service team to escape.[10]

Eggman Empire[]

Following the rescue of the Robians from Robotropolis, Dr. Eggman activated the Nanites on Heavy and Bomb, causing both to begin attacking.[11] Due to the other Nanites injected into the systems of Wombat Stu, Hershey Cat, and Geoffrey St. John while in Robotropolis' jail, Bomb was able to incapacitate them by releasing a certain gas that activated the Nanites. Following this, He then made copies of himself while Heavy command them surround Knothole holding the Royal Family hostage. Although Heavy had the numerous Bombs programmed to blow up should he be destroyed, Sonic smashed through Heavy anyways. Two seconds before the Bombs detonated, Rotor Walrus and Tails disabled them with an EMP generator. He was taken apart after that.[12]

In 3237, Dr. Eggman produced new models of Heavy and Bomb to assassinate the singing star Mina Mongoose after Nack the Weasel failed to do so.[13] Bomb(s) and Heavy went into there concert where Tails was on lookout and spotted him, leading Fiona Fox, Bunnie Rabbot, Tails, and Amy Rose attacked him (them) which created an explosion, but in Mina's dressing room, one last bomb was there which Ash Mongoose grabbed and ran out of the room when it blew up and severely injured him in the process.[14]

Team Freedom[]

Some time later, Tails and Rotor rebuilt Bomb as well as Heavy, combining their old friendly personalities with the Eggman versions of their designs. Both were re-purposed to be members of Team Freedom to protect the city from incoming threats."King" Naugus did not like the idea of two traitor Badniks working for them, but Rotor reminded him that he was bad once as well and they first rebelled against Dr. Robotnik. During the exchange, a side of the civic center gave way due to unknown causes, and Bomb worked with Cheese the Chao and Rotor to destroy falling debris and blast the building back onto its foundation as Team Freedom managed to prevent a disaster, earning the public's overall support.[15] Bomb and Heavy also joined their teammates in protecting New Mobotropolis from an invasion of Egg SWATs aided by Team Metal. The pair almost went toe-to-toe with the latest version of Metal Sonic v3.0, only for Shard to intercept his counterpart at such a speed that Bomb and Heavy did not even recognize their former adversary.[16] The pair later attended a Forget Me Knots concert in New Mobotropolis, and accompanied their team in saving the band from a collapsing stage.[17]

Bomb and Heavy joined their teammates in confronting Tails Doll after the robot's true nature was discovered, only to have it transform into a monstrous being intent on eliminating them. It was then the second Genesis Wave struck, with Bomb's entire Multiverse being changed forever soon after.[18]

Personality[]

Bomb's personality is hard to read, given that he does not communicate in words but instead apparently communicates with "Ping" noises, which Heavy can apparently translate. Despite this, he has demonstrated a drive similar to that of his larger counterpart in fighting the tyranny of both Robotnik's, despite having been enslaved by the Eggman version not once, but twice.

Trivia[]

  • The original version Bomb featured his own unique design. However, the rebuilt model was based directly off of his Knuckles' Chaotix video game appearance.
  • When the Secret Service went to Angel Island, Bomb could speak like everyone else. He later reverted back to his regular "ping" noises again though.
