It's huge and has gained strength over a long period of time. It usually has a very gentle personality, if it's attacked, it will completely change back to its ferocious "Boo" behavior. If further attacked, it will eventually disappear.

— Description, Sonic Adventure 2 Hero/Dark Manual[1]

The Boom Boos[2] (ブーブ[3][1] Būbu?) are creatures that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are a type of large Boo ghosts that have gained strength after a long period of time.[1] They serve as the servants of King Boom Boo.

Description[]

Anatomy[]

The Boom Boos have a white body that is vaguely shaped like a balloon, with thin hands and two small sharp ends at the bottom of the body. For facial features, they have two eyes, as well as a closed linear mouth which looks like it is knitted up. What distinguishes Boom Boos from normal Boos is their imposing size, being much larger than their brethren. Their appearance has slightly changed over time: in their original appearance during the Space Colony ARK incident, they had soulless, black eyes; during the Lost Hex incident, these eyes became much larger and received gray rings; during Dodon Pa's Grand Prix, they received looney eyes with a yellow, pink and cyan sclera, and blue pupils.

When shrunk down, the Boom Boos' appearance changes to that of an attack-type Boo. As such, they gain red and orange colored maniac eyes with black pupils and their mouth opens, revealing black, sharp teeth. They also gain three points on their hands and the two ends below their body are transformed into one. They are either much larger than the average Boo, or roughly the same size.

Personality[]

Similar to King Boom Boo, the Boom Boos are mischievous and malicious, giggling whenever they cause misdeeds. Despite being nothing more than objects of fear for individuals like Tails, they actually appear to be nice creatures.[3]

Powers and abilities[]

The Boom Boos have the ability to levitate and move through midair. As ghosts, they possess a spirit physiology that causes them to evaporate when they take too much damage when tangible. However, they are much stronger than a regular Boo and when hurt they will shrink down instead of evaporating. Nevertheless, they can only shrink down to a certain size before disappearing.[1]

Game appearances[]

Sonic Adventure 2[]

In Sonic Adventure 2, in its enhanced port Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, and the 2012 remaster, the Boom Boos are rare enemies that appear in stages located in Hidden Base or other haunted areas. While they very rarely appear normally, in Hard mode they are more common enemies. The Boom Boos can be found in the following stages for each character:

Character Stage
Normal Mode Hard mode
Sonic N/A Pyramid Cave
Knuckles Death Chamber Pumpkin Hill, Aquatic Mine, Death Chamber

In gameplay, the Boom Boos are commonly found in open areas due to their massive size. Normally they will harmlessly wonder around, but they will slowly move towards the playable character when they approach. When making contact, they will cause damage. To defeat a Boom Boo, it must be attacked three times: hitting it once will cause it to shrink down to a large attack type Boo, hitting it twice will turn it into a regular attack type Boo, and hitting it a third time will defeat it. Defeating a Boom Boo will award the player with three hundred points. It should be noted that throwing objects at Boom Boos will not affect them.

Sonic Lost World[]

In the Wii U version and PC version of Sonic Lost World, the Boom Boos and Boos appear exclusively in Sky Road Zone 4. In this game, the Boom Boos are indestructible obstacles that move left or right across the screen in rows with normal Boos, and cause damage when touched. The player has to avoid them using the Magenta Rhythm Color Power.

Sonic Runners[]

In Sonic Runners, Boom Boos appear as stage hazards in the Desert Ruins special stage.

Team Sonic Racing[]

In Team Sonic Racing, the Boom Boos appear as traps on the Boo's House track.

Sonic Speed Simulator[]

In Sonic Speed Simulator, Boom Boos appear as enemies during the "Boo Bash Event".

In both the Sonic X anime series, a Boom Boo would be created by the merging of several Booms. It only appeared in "Sonic's Scream Test", where the Booms formed a Boom Boo to battle Amy, only to be swiftly taken out by the hedgehog.

Trivia[]

  • In Sonic Runners, the Boos were incorrectly referred to as Boom Boos in the cutscenes.
