Butterdroid[1] (テフテフ[2] Tefu-Tefu?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, butterfly-based Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman that can fly.

Appearance[]

Based on butterflies, Butterdroids have light-grey metallic armor with a pair of big yellow wings. They also have big, wide eyeballs and a small proboscis. In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, the Butterdroids were redesigned to be more modernized and menacing. In Sonic Lost World, the Butterdroids are redesigned with blue wings and orange highlights, two holes in each wing, and a silver metallic body with a visible abdomen.

Game appearances[]

Sonic & Knuckles[]

Butterdroidspr

Butterdroids first appeared in Sonic & Knuckles and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, where they can be encountered in Mushroom Hill Zone. They slowly fly around in groups of two or three, but will attempt to spiral into the playable characters when they get close. This makes the Butterdroids easy to defeat in most cases, but they usually appear near Sticky Vines that the player can get caught on, making them more of a threat. Regardless, Butterdroids are easily defeated with the Spin Jump.

Sonic Generations[]

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, Butterdroids from somewhere across spacetime appear as enemies in both Acts of Mushroom Hill. In this game, their attack patterns remain the same as in the previous game. Regardless, they can be easily defeated with a Spin Jump or the Homing Attack when they are aligned in chain formations so as to help the player reach higher areas.

Sonic Lost World[]

In the Wii U version and PC version of Sonic Lost World, Butterdroids can be found exclusively in Desert Ruins Zone 2. Like many of the Badniks in the game, they are brainwashed by the Deadly Six's magnetic field manipulation. At certain points in the Zone, during which Sonic skydives, he must avoid multiple groups of six Butterdroids flying in circles, as they inflict damage upon touch. In addition, because Sonic is skydiving, he is unable to attack and therefore must avoid these Badniks instead of attempting to destroy them.

Other game appearances[]

Sonic Jam[]

In Sonic Jam for the Game.com, Butterdroids reappear as enemies in Mushroom Hill Zone, functioning exactly as they did in their debut.

Trivia[]

  • Butterdroids never appeared in an issue of Sonic the Comic. However, it did appear in the 1996 Sonic Holiday Special on at pin-up, along with EggRobo, Sonic and other Mushroom Hill Zone Badniks.
  • Butterdroids bear an uncanny resemblance to the Pata-Bata from Sonic the Hedgehog CD.
  • The Butterdroid's Japanese name, Tefu-tefu, is a onomatopoeia for a fluttering noise.
