Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic Adventure

Casinopolis (カジノポリス Kajinoporisu?) is an Action Stage that appears in Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut and the 2010 remaster of the game. It is the third Action Stage played as Sonic, and the second as both Tails and Knuckles. It is an entertainment center located in the Casino Area of Station Square. As with most other Action Stages in the games, Casinopolis has different level designs for each character, which have three optional missions each.

Description[]

Overall, Casinopolis is a large entertainment center found in the casino area of Station Square. The main hall of the casino is a classical casino feel with bright lights, red carpets, blue checkered floors, a shower room, and a Ring deposit room. There is a golden Sonic statue in the middle surrounded by spotlights. The second floor includes a mechanical "evil" lion head and pirate ships.

The 777 Slots Pinball (or Sonic Pinball or Blue Star Pinball) and the Card & Pinball (or NiGHTS Pinball) slot machines are regular virtual pinball machines (despite that real casinos do not have virtual pinball machines) with Sonic (in constant Spin Attack) as the ball. There are three "balls" that serves as lives and are lost by falling into the chute. The 777 Slots Pinball machine is a Classic Sonic themed pinball machine and features artworks of Classic Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Dr. Robotnik. Meanwhile, Card & Pinball features NiGHTS artworks and has two fields. If Sonic falls down the chute in the bonus field, he will fly through Spring Valley where NiGHTS themself is seen.

The garbage dump is a large, mechanical underground dilapidated sewer-like dump full of garbage and a stinky scenery. Here, there are ruined walls and abandoned pathways full of Iron balls. There are also giant fans, presumably to keep garbage from flooding. Sonic will end up here if failed to collect 100 or more Rings, while Tails automatically ends up here upon entering the level.

Story[]

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

Accompanied by Tails, Sonic goes to Casinopolis in the duo's mission to find the Chaos Emeralds and prevent Dr. Robotnik from acquiring them first to strengthen Chaos. Though they do get an Emerald by collecting a few hundred Rings to reach it in the vault, the doctor later ambushes them outside of the casino by releasing sleeping gas from his Eggmobile, putting them to sleep and allowing him to take the Emerald they obtained. Not giving up yet however, the hedgehog and the fox head out to look for more Chaos Emeralds.

Miles "Tails" Prower[]

Accompanying Sonic, Tails goes to Casinopolis in the heroes' mission to find the Chaos Emeralds and stop Dr. Robotnik from using them first to strengthen Chaos. After the fox acquires an Emerald by winning a race against the hedgehog at the casino's garbage dump, however, the doctor ambushes them outside of the casino by releasing sleeping gas from his Eggmobile, knocking them out and allowing him to take the Emerald they had found. Not giving up yet however, the two head out to look for more Chaos Emeralds.

Knuckles the Echidna[]

Whilst looking for more shards of the Master Emerald in Station Square, Knuckles goes to Casinopolis and finds three of them. Upon exiting, he notices Sonic and Tails laying unconscious outside of the casino, under the effects of the sleeping gas Eggman hit them with earlier.

Gameplay[]

In Sonic's version of Casinopolis, there are two large pinball tables where he can earn rings by playing pinball-themed games. Large teleporters are located in the stage which force the hedgehog into a constant Spin Attack as Sonic himself is the pinball to these games. Casinopolis features two pinball tables in total:

The pinball machines there are quite different from each other; the NiGHTS machine is based on a five card (poker style) system, and large Ring bonuses are awarded based on card combinations gained while playing pinball (i.e. one pair, two of a kind, three of a kind, etc.), while the Sonic-themed one functions as a giant slot machine with different levels of rewards to be gained, depending on the combination achieved. The player is given three "balls" after entering either machine. A ball is lost when Sonic falls into the drain and is taken back to the plunger. If the player loses all three balls before gaining at least 100 Rings, the machine automatically drops Sonic into the large garbage dump built under the casino. Badniks patrol here, but if one is willing to brave them, massive rewards can be earned. Multiple pathways are available due to the large fans built into the floor, and each path taken contains 10 Rings Item Boxes. Sonic can find several hundred Rings down here, at least 400 of which are needed to complete his version of this Action Stage, meaning going down here can even be advantageous. If Sonic has more then 100 Rings when finishing with the pinball tables however, he will be dropped outside the vault.

Curiously, the shower room of the casino has functioning showers where the playable character can wash themselves.

Overview[]

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

Sonic's version of the Action Stage starts in the main hall. The main goal is to deposit 400 Rings into the vault of the casino. To gain Rings, Sonic must break machines or play pinball.

In Pinball, Sonic must bump into objects and find secrets to gain rings. If Sonic falls down the chute three times, he will ether be sent back the the main hall or be thrown in a garbage dump depending on how many Rings were collected.

After 400 Rings are collected, Sonic can head to the vault and deposit the Rings, creating a gold mountain leading to the silver Chaos Emerald.

Miles "Tails" Prower[]

Tails' version of the Action Stage only takes place in the garbage area of the casino, where Sonic is raced through the neon-lit pathways as he tries to reach the silver Chaos Emerald before his friend. Tails can find an advantage by using his flight ability to take shortcuts. Tails will slow down if he bumps into obstacles or hazards, giving Sonic enough time to catch up. If Tails reaches the Emerald before Sonic, he will win.

Knuckles the Echidna[]

Knuckles' version of the Action Stage allows access to the second floor of the casino, although both the garbage area and pinball-themed games are unavailable. His goal in this level is to find three shards of the Master Emerald, which may call for the destruction of the Sonic statue as a shard may be hidden inside. Knuckles can also access hidden areas to find the shard.

Other game appearances[]

Sonic Pinball Party[]

In Sonic Pinball Party, Casinopolis serves as the main setting. In this game, Dr. Eggman has organized the Egg Cup Tournament, which was attended, among others, by Knuckles and Metal Sonic. Sonic himself entered the tournament to save his friends, including Tails and Amy, who had been brainwashed by the doctor.

Sonic Heroes[]

In Sonic Heroes, Casinopolis is mentioned by Amy while in Casino Park, where she compares the surroundings to this casino.

In other media[]

Animation[]

Sonic X[]

Casinopolis Sonic X

Casinopolis, from "A Chaotic Day".

In the Sonic X anime series, Casinopolis is one of the locations in Station Square. In this media, Knuckles found a Master Emerald shard here that had crashed into the entrance to the building, causing the police to intervene and secure the area.

Books and comics[]

Archie Comics[]

Casinopolis Pre-SGW

Casinopolis, from Sonic the Hedgehog #166.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Casinopolis was a casino located in Station Square. Originally, it was used as a front by Dr. Robotnik in order to replace the patrons with Auto Automatons after scanning their minds with the slot machines. However, the Chaotix put a stop to this scheme.

After the Super Genesis Wave re-wrote history, Casinopolis and its history became virtually identical to that of its game counterpart. During the Shattered World Crisis, many residents got trapped here due to the floods caused by the crisis until they were rescued by the Freedom Fighters.

Trivia[]

  • There is an unused tunnel that can be accessed in Dilapidated Way using Debug Mode.
  • The progress meter, when playing as Tails, is almost completely useless here, as multiple paths can be taken. This often results in one character suddenly appearing to gain a significant distance.
O COWGIRL

The model of the provocative cowgirl.

  • In the original version of Sonic Adventure, there is a neon sign depicting a cowgirl that made suggestive noises when hit in Knuckles' version of the stage. It was removed in later versions due to its rather provocative nature, showing the cowgirl half-dressed and holding alcohol.
    • Even that was toned down from a prototype version of the Casinopolis lobby, which showed the cowgirl as a full-fledged bunny girl lying on her side and gesturing to a liquor bar behind her with the wine glass.
  • Through the use of various glitches, it is possible for Gamma and Amy to enter Casinopolis.
  • This level marks NiGHTS' first appearance outside of their home series and the first of many NiGHTS appearances in the Sonic series.
SonicAdventure CasinoCamera

The Casinopolis sign zoomed in.

  • In the Dreamcast version of the game, if the player stands inside the entrance to Casinopolis but not long enough for the game to load the Action Stage, the camera slowly pans up to the Casinopolis sign where it locks in place until the player leaves.
LotDK4 Casinopolis

The Casino in Legends of the Dark Knight that resembles Casinopolis.

  • In Legends of the Dark Knight volume 2 issue #4, the entrance to The Riddler's hideout is identical to the entrance to Casinopolis. The artist Darick Robertson stated however that the similarities are a coincidence.[1]
  • The Sonic statue in Sonic's version of Casinopolis does not appear right away. Instead, it builds up depending on the number of Rings deposited. If zero Rings were deposited, the statue is not built, if 200 Rings were deposited, the statue's feet are built, if 1000 Rings are deposited, the legs and the lower body are built, if 2500 Rings are deposited, the upper body and the arms and hands are built, and if 5000 Rings are deposited, the head is built.
