You may be looking for Caterkiller.

Catakiller, Jr.[1] (メラモーラ[2] Meramōra?) is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are a mass-produced, caterpillar-inspired Badnik model created by Dr. Robotnik and a successor of the Caterkillers.

Appearance

Much like the Caterkillers, Catakiller, Jr.s are based on caterpillars. These Badniks' bodies are composed of seven blue and spherical segments. The first of these segments serves as the head which has small black eyes. Their next three body segments after the head have electricity generator rings around them.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

STH3-CatakillerJr

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Catakiller, Jr.s appear only at Angel Island Zone where they hover back and forth at medium speed in midair. When the playable characters get close to them, they will release what appears to be electrical waves from the generator rings on their body segments which can damage the player even if they possess a Thunder Shield.

These Badniks can only be defeated by attacking their head. Touching any other part of their body, even if they are not releasing their electric attack, will damage the player.

Sonic Mania

CatakillerJr-Mania

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, the Catakiller, Jr.s appear as enemies. In terms of design, they look exactly like they did in their debut game. In these games, they appear in Chemical Plant Zone. They also appear in Angel Island Zone, which is exclusive to the Encore Mode in Sonic Mania Plus. This makes the Caterkiller, Jr.s the only Badniks in the game to appear across multiple Zones.

In gameplay, the Catakiller, Jr.s float around like in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Their heads also remain the only spot on them that the player can attack without sustaining damage in any situation.

Upon their destruction, they release an Animal. When destroyed in this game however, instead of breaking up into its segments and falling away like it is supposed to, a Caterkiller, Jr. breaks up into a bunch of duplicates of its head.
