The Cell[1] is a recurring enemy in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a miniature robot model developed by Professor Gerald Robotnik which is created when an Artificial Chaos P-100s, an experimental cyborg model based on the ancient deity Chaos which roams the Space Colony ARK, divides its body mass.

Appearance

The Cells have the same configuration as their parent, resembling blob-like orbs of water with a small mechanical helmet. Originally, Cells had a green light on their helmet, but in Shadow the Hedgehog they have red lights.

Game appearances

Sonic Adventure 2

The Cells made their first appearance in Sonic Adventure 2 and its remake Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. Being created from Artificial Chaos P-100s, they never appear without an Artificial Chaos to spawn them.

When an Artificial Chaos P-100 spots the player in gameplay, its watery body will split into a certain number of Cells, leaving its mechanical head hovering in the air. The Cells will then attack by constantly crawling toward the player and explode on contact, often in large numbers. If the player attacks them, they will explode (causing the Cells around them to explode too) but they do not hurt the player.

While the player can destroy each Cell manually, destroying the head of the Artificial Chaos that spawned them will destroy them all at once. Each individual Cell gives ten points when destroyed, but no points are awarded per Cell if they are destroyed by the head being destroyed.

Shadow the Hedgehog

In Shadow the Hedgehog, Cells again appeared exclusively alongside Artificial Chaos P-100s, never once appearing by themselves.

In this game, Cells will emerge from the body of an Artificial Chaos P-100 when it is attacked, leaving its mechanical head hovering in the air. After floating around the head for a few seconds, the Cell will remerge with the head. Like in Sonic Adventure 2, destroying the Artificial Chaos's head destroys all its Cells too, although the player can still destroy each Cell one by one. While destroying a Cell does not award points, the Artificial Chaos P-100's body will turn out smaller when its remaining Cells remerge.

Powers and abilities

The Cells are capable of levitation and can detonate themselves to damage foes. Being formed from an Artificial Chaos P-100's body mass, the Cells can remerge with themselves to reform their gestalt form's body.

Weakness

The Cells relies on their Artificial Chaos P-100's head for commandos. As such, they will be destroyed when their associated head is destroyed to.
