The Chao Egg is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are eggs from which the Chao are hatched from. In the games where they appear, they can be obtained in various ways including by finding or purchasing them, and by breeding Chao.

Description[]

Chao Eggs are large eggs, the color of which will determine the skin color of the Chao that will hatch from them. The most common are Neutral Chao eggs, which are white eggs with blue spots and yellowish tips. Colored eggs are less common.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Adventure[]

In Sonic Adventure and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, the Chao Eggs make their debut along with the Chao. They are used to hatch Chao in the different Chao Gardens in the game. When starting a game and entering a Chao Garden for the first time, the player will receive two Chao Eggs for free. Other eggs can be obtained in a number of ways, including the following:

  • Buying: The fastest method of obtaining Chao Eggs, requiring the player to spend Rings for which they will buy an egg. These eggs can be purchased at the Black Market. The color and type of eggs available for purchase will change based on the emblems the player earns.
  • Capturing: The player can find three different Chao Eggs hidden in Station Square (golden egg), the Mystic Ruins (solid egg) and the Egg Carrier (black egg).
  • Breeding: When it comes time for Chao's mating season (this can be seen when a given Chao begins to surround itself with a circle of flowers), the player can combine two different individuals to produce a Chao Egg. The color of the egg will depend on the skin color of its parents.

Chao Eggs bought from the Black Market cannot be off-loaded if it would exceed the limit of eight Chao assigned to the Chao Garden the player is in and they cannot be bought at all if the player has a total of 24 Chao across all three gardens. Similarly, Chao Eggs also cannot be produced by mating if it would exceed this limit.

When a Chao Egg is broken, the player can sell it to the Black Market for some Rings or give its shell to a Chao which can wear it as a hat if they are able to.

The prices of the Chao Eggs in the Black Market are as follows:

Color Price (Rings)
White Egg 400

In Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut, the player can transfer the Chao Eggs they have obtained to the Tiny Chao Garden found in the Game Boy Advance versions of Sonic Advance, Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Pinball Party, and vice versa.

Sonic Adventure 2[]

In Sonic Adventure 2 and its enhanced port Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the Chao Eggs reappear. They have the same role as in Sonic Adventure. Like in that game, the player can get two free Chao Eggs by entering a Chao Garden for the first time in a game. Also, the player can get more by buying them in the Black Market (with the same price as in the previous game) or by pairing two Chao.

When a Chao Egg is broken, the player can sell it to the Black Market for some Rings or give its shell to a Chao which can wear it as a hat if they are able to.

Chao Eggs bought from the Black Market cannot be off-loaded if it would exceed the limit of eight Chao assigned to the Chao Garden the player is in and they cannot be bought at all if the player has a total of 24 Chao across all three gardens. Similarly, Chao Eggs also cannot be produced by mating if it would exceed the limit. This counts not only the number of Chao present in the garden but also those currently taking classes in the Chao Kindergarten that were originally picked from that garden.

In Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the player can transfer the Chao Eggs they have obtained to the Tiny Chao Garden found in the Game Boy Advance versions of Sonic Advance, Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Pinball Party, and vice versa.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood[]

In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, the Chao Eggs appear hidden in areas of the game. If found, they will spawn a Chao that will help the player in battle.

Sonic Runners[]

In Sonic Runners, Chao Eggs can be collected after passing the final boss of a chapter. Accumulating ten Eggs will award the player with a golden ticket, which can be used to spin the Premium Roulette. A Chao Egg collected from the Roulette hatch into random buddies, which include many kinds of Chao as well as various other creatures and objects, such as Wisps and RC Vehicles. If the player has already collected the buddy that hatches from the Chao Egg, that buddy will gain a level.

Trivia[]

  • In Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 and their respective remakes, the Black Egg is the most expensive non-shiny egg a player can buy, the second being the Lime Green Egg and the third being the Gray Egg.
  • In Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the Chao Eggs' shells will give the Chao some additional resistance in Chao Karate if they have it in their heads. In addition, the shell cannot be removed from the head unless the player throws/knocks the Chao, which will make it dislike its owner a bit.
