The Chaos Emeralds are objects that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. They are mysterious magical gemstone of nearly infinite power that come in seven distinct colored varieties: peridot (green), aquamarine (cyan), sapphire (blue), ruby (red), amethyst (purple), topaz (yellow) and diamond (grey). Due to their properties, the Chaos Emeralds have often been the center of conflict across space and time in several different realities.
History
Earlier usage
The Chaos Emeralds have been at the center of many plots by Dr. Eggman. The emeralds have been gathered multiple times and their powers harnessed, having known to have been used to power up the water god Chaos, to power the Eclipse Cannon and numerous other super-weapons usually of Eggman's making. In the majority of these instances, Sonic the Hedgehog and others have foiled these plans by harnessing the emeralds power themselves and becoming their Super States Super forms. The emeralds have sometimes been the sought after by other major threats, such as the Black Arms.[1]
Following the events where Dr. Eggman tried and failed to control the Time Eater, the blue Chaos Emerald got sent to Mega Man's World.[2]
Worlds Collide
The blue Chaos Emerald was found by one of Dr. Albert W. Wily, who decided to analyze it which brought him into contact with Dr. Eggman. Deciding it was in their best interest to meet, Wily created the Skull Egg Zone with the blue Chaos Emerald for them to meet in. Deciding to join forces in conquering their respective worlds, Eggman and Wily devised the agenda to collect all seven Chaos Emeralds to unleash a "Super Genesis Wave" that would let them reshape their universes to their liking.
Using the blue Chaos Emerald's power inside their Wily Egg, Drs. Eggman and Wily initiate a regular Genesis Wave, reshaping the Prime Zone and the Earth in the year 20XX to their benefits. This Genesis Wave, however, scattered the other Chaos Emeralds across both worlds, leaving the doctors to collect them.

Using the Roboticized Masters, Eggman and Wily collected five of the Chaos Emeralds. At some point afterwards, the Roboticized Masters found the sixth Chaos Emerald inside the National Bank in Mega City. Despite some interference from Mega Man and Proto Man, the Roboticized Masters got the sixth Chaos Emerald to the Wily Egg. Not long after, the last Chaos Emerald was found by Silver Man and Blaze Woman and brought to the Wily Egg as well.

With all seven Emeralds, Drs. Eggman and Wily plugged them into the Genesis Reactor from the Genesis Chamber and had them power it up. At the time where Eggman and Wily had captured Sonic and Mega Man inside the Wily Egg, the Emeralds had finished charging. As the doctors gloated over their impending victory, however, Knuckles and Proto Man attacked. In an attempt to get rid of the duo, the doctors drew power from the Chaos Emeralds and super-charged their Egg-Wily Machine X. Then, just as the Super Genesis Wave was unleashed and rewrote the two universes, Sonic and Mega Man harnessed the seven Chaos Emeralds as well, transforming into Super Sonic and Super Armor Mega Man, allowing them to defeat the doctors. The two heroes then tried to restore their worlds to normal with Chaos Control, but while Mega Man succeeded without interference, Sonic's attempt was disturbed by an attack by Dr. Eggman.
Shattered World Crisis

The Chaos Emeralds remained intact after the Super Genesis Wave, but were transported to different locations around Sonic's World. When the planet broke apart, Sally had requested both the New Freedom Fighters and the Chaotix to search for a Chaos Emerald, as the mystical gems along with the Gaia Temples can help restore the planet.[3] At an unknown location, Sally, Tails, and Antoine had sneaked inside a mining site run by Eggman's forces, which eventually led to a crystal cave containing the purple Chaos Emerald.[4] The three Freedom Fighters managed to retrieve the emerald,[5] and escape the mining site.[6]

Meanwhile, upon both Sally's request and to pay their payments on their apartment, the Chaotix find Knuckles at the Pumpkin Hill Zone, where they ask the echidna for help finding a Chaos Emerald. Knuckles agrees,[7] and the four eventually find the emerald deep inside the Aquatic Mine Zone, where the red Chaos Emerald is being held by a frightened creature.[8] After Knuckles confronts the creature and explains that he is supposed to find and protect an ancient spirit said to help heal the planet from its fractured state. The creature, later named by Charmy as "Chip", agrees to Knuckles' proposal, and he goes along with the four heroes, giving the Chaotix an emerald at their disposal. However, Team Hooligan fights the Chaotix for possession of the emerald, and, eventually, manage to steal the emerald and Chip while the Chaotix and Knuckles are trapped fighting a Dark Gaia Titan.[9] Luckily, the Chaotix and Knuckles manage to escape from the clutches of the monster, and confront Team Hooligans again. Vector conjures a plan to hide Chip inside his mouth while Espio will hack the Marvellous Queen to lure Team Hooligans to a bogus place where the Chaos Emerald is located, and while Charmy hides the emerald. The Hooligans fall for the trap, the Dark Gaia Titan is defeated, and the Chaotix give the emerald to Knuckles because the Hooligans will eventually ambush the Chaotix for tricking them.[10]

Sometime later, the Soumerca Egg Army finds the white Chaos Emerald, and the Egg Boss of the Egg Army (Thunderbolt) tells Eggman about their find. She planned to ship the emerald to the Death Egg, but Eggman rejected the idea, and instead gave Thunderbolt instructions to lure the Freedom Fighters into a trap for stealing his emeralds.[11] Later, Sonic, Amy, and Sally travel to the Rocky Jungle Zone to acquire the Chaos Emerald located there. With assistance from Mighty and Ray, the Freedom Fighter infiltrate the Egg Army base, but are ambushed by Thunderbolt. The Egg Army unleashes huge amount of electricity that causes the team to go down. However, because of the dark concentrated energy he inhaled days earlier merged with the amount of stress he's dealing with, Sonic transforms into a "werehog".[12] Sonic, as the Werehog, begins to unleash his anger at the Egg Army, and quickly subdues Thunderbolt. Mighty tells the Freedom Fighters to retrieve the Chaos Emerald while he attempts to reason with Sonic to stop. Mighty's words are altered by the influence of Dark Gaia energy inside Sonic, but luckily, Amy and Sally reason with Sonic about how he strives to protect nature and his friends, which causes Sonic to stop and realize what he's done. With the Chaos Emerald in hand, Sally and Amy head back to the Sky Patrol, while Sonic stays at the Rocky Jungle Zone to control the Werehog inside him.[13]

Eventually, the blue Chaos Emerald was tracked down at Northamer, specifically near the Sand Hill Zone, by the Freedom Fighters. Sally, Antoine, and Bunnie (as the team faction "Team Freedom") decide to head to Sand Hill Zone while Amy, Rotor the Walrus, and Tails (as "Team Fighters") will provide back up for Team Freedom. At Sand Hill Zone, Sally, Antoine, and Bunnie arrive at the capsule holding the Chaos Emerald, and prepare to steal it, only to be ambushed by E-108 Iota, E-109 Kappa, and E-110 Lambda.[14] Due to the unexpected ambush, the three Freedom Fighters, even with the backup provided by Tails, Amy, and Rotor, couldn't retrieve the Chaos Emerald before the capsule it was in transformed into a rocket and flew off away from the battlefield. This minor victory gave Eggman one of the seven Chaos Emeralds essential to saving the world.[15]

The green colored Chaos Emerald would later be found by Scratch while he was overseeing repairs at an undisclosed area. Taken to Breezie the Hedgehog, she would later scheme up a plan to create the Chaos Emerald Championship to attract audiences around the world to watch popular icons fight for the emerald.[16][15] Thus, she created the tournament to which popular figures around the world (Sonic, Amy, Tails, Knuckles, Espio, Honey, Nack, Bean, Bark, to name a few) rallied in to claim the emerald.[17] Eventually, all but Sonic and Knuckles were out of the contest, leaving the hedgehog and the echidna to fight for the emerald.[18][19]

Sonic then realized that Knuckles was put into the contest unknowingly and was only there to find shards of the Master Emerald. However, Metal Sonic invaded the contest and went through all of the inactive security systems at Casino Park Zone thanks to the help of Team Hooligans. Metal Sonic retrieved the emerald and almost escaped with it had Tails not been there to ambush the robot. The emerald was confiscated from Metal Sonic and the robotic doppelganger fled the scene before more reinforcements could arrive. The emerald was then given to the Freedom Fighters.[16]

Shortly after the contest, Sally, Tails, Nicole the Holo-Lynx, and Big the Cat visited Dr. Ellidy at the Isolated Island after the doctor was in danger inside the Digital World.[20] When Ellidy discovered the Red Star Rings brewing up at the Lake of Rings located on the island,[21] it was revealed that the yellow Chaos Emerald was the source of the creation of the special rings.[22] Thus, Tails and Big went to the Lake of Rings to retrieve the emerald. Thanks to Big's fishing skills, the two collected the yellow Chaos Emerald.[23]

The seventh and final Chaos Emerald, the cyan colored gem, was found by G.U.N. forces at Crystal Desert Zone. Rouge the Bat then contacted the Freedom Fighters about the finding of the emerald, but she reported in too late, as Metal Sonic had found the G.U.N. camp and the Chaos Emerald located there.[24] Metal Sonic had ambushed and stolen the Chaos Emerald, leaving the camp destroyed. Luckily, the Freedom Fighters managed to arrive and helped out the injured soldiers, while Sonic, Bunnie, and Tails had chased Metal Sonic to retrieve the stolen emerald. Sonic and Metal Sonic eventually transported themselves to a Genesis Portal, leading them to the Burning Ruin Zone. They found Silver the Hedgehog who provided an unintentional distraction for Sonic as Metal Sonic kicked the blue hedgehog and stormed off.[25]

Silver and Sonic eventually find three more Genesis Portals that would lure Metal Sonic into reaching the one that can transport one back to Sonic's World. Metal Sonic then arrived and almost made it inside one of the Genesis Portals, but Sonic and Silver intervened. Sonic kicked the emerald out of Metal Sonic's hand, to which the two raced to get the emerald. The emerald almost fell into the lava pit, but thanks to Silver's psychokinetic abilities, the emerald was saved. The two hedgehogs eventually sealed Metal Sonic into a portal leading to an unknown location, and trapped the robot thanks to Silver. Sonic collected the cyan Chaos Emerald, thanked Silver, and returned back home.[25]
Worlds Unite
When Sigma began sending his troops to other worlds to fuse them together, the unlikely allies of the Unified Army and Dr. Eggman decided to assemble all seven Chaos Emeralds which they each held for Sonic as a last resort against the god-like Sigma.[26]
Powers and traits
Each emerald contains supposedly unlimited quantities of pure Chaos Energy, a highly powerful form of energy able to warp space and time when properly utilized. Alone, an emerald is able to act as an extremely effective energy resource for machines, empower an individual with magical powers, enhance innate talents, and cause supernatural phenomenon. When all seven emeralds are gathered they have unlimited energy potential and can imbue whoever wields them with a powerful, nigh-invulnerable state.
Trivia
- Emerald is the name of a specific gem of the beryl variety, a family known for its wide array of possibly colours. "Emerald" is also used in Japan as a generic term for jewels.
- "Chaos" in the English language means disorder and an irregular, unpredictable action that was remarkably sensitive to regular changes in environment, similar to how the Chaos Emeralds in the series act. "Chaos" as used in Greek refers to a large emptiness, or space. "Space" in English came to be a general term meaning both everything outside of the Earth’s atmosphere and the placement of objects in relation to one another.
- The colors of the chaos emeralds were chosen based on the three primary colors of light (red, blue, and green), the three secondary colors wich are mixtures of the primary colors (red + blue = purple, blue + green = cyan, and green + red = yellow), and finally grey which is a mixture of all three primary colors (red + blue + green = grey).
