Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric
Cliff's Excavation Site
Next level >>

Cliff's Excavation Site is the first hub world area in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. It is a rocky region with an archaeological dig site set up by Cliff and his workers to excavate the remains of the Ancients' civilizations and some Sentinels. It can be accessed after clearing Lyric's Tomb. From here, the player can access the game's first five levels and find the Shock Crystal.

Team Sonic came to the site looking for Cliff's aid to help shred light on Lyric the Last Ancient's schemes after they released him. From this location, the team found the first three Chaos Crystals to halt Lyric's plans before moving on to Bygone Island.

Description[]

Cliff's Excavation Site is a large and orange-colored rocky region near the coast, with pillar-like mountainsides enclosing it. While flora is not abundant and the majority of the ground is covered in dust, there are patches of pale grass and pine trees outlining the cliffs. Dividing the area is a wide river with a waterfall in the west. An ancient bridge in the middle of the area connects the two river sides.

The southern part of this area consists most of canyons cutting through large masses of rock, except in some spots along the riverside. The northern area is more open and is the heart of the excavation site. Straight ahead of the ancient bridge, Cliff and his workers have set up a camp in a deep crater, a small harbor, supply containers, and digging equipment. In Cliff's crater is also a totem that can be rebuilt with Robot Scrap and allows one to buy new upgrades for the playable character. As an excavation site, objects related to mining and digging can also be found all over Cliff's Excavation Site. This include wooden support beams for shafts and holes, wooden scaffolds and bridges, some digging equipment and a wrecking machine. There are as well a few structures from the time of the Ancients present here.

To the west in the southern region, there is a blue gate that requires the Shock Crystal to open it. Next to this gate is also Old Tucker, who lives in a small wooden hut. To the east of the location for the Shock Crystal's Crystal Lock on the other hand, there is a wrecking machine that can be repaired with Robot Scrap. After restoring it, it will demolish the stone wall next to it, unlocking a secret area with Rings. Apart from that, there are also various rocks to destroy in this region. Right next to the wrecking machine is also a Hydro Gate. If ones goes straight ahead from this level's starting point, one can also find a large hollow tree trunk.

In front of Cliff's camp, on the opposite side of the harbor, is Chef Woody, who resides in the cooking tent. On the left of Chef Woody's tent is a yellow gate that requires the Sun Crystal to open it. Next to the gate is also an archaeological camp site that can be rebuilt with Robot Scrap. Between Chef Woody's tent and the Sun Crystal's gate is also a series of Bounce Pads that lead up to a collapsed tunnel. By paying enough Robot Scrap here, the barricaded entrance to a tunnel will be blown up and and grant access to a speed section with collectibles along it. On the left side on the northern river bank, next to the ancient bridge. there is also another Hydro Gate, from where one can access a closed-off piece of land on the southern side of the river. This area has platforms that can be raised with the Enerbeam and hidden collectibles, including Crowns, Shines, and Robot Scrap Chests.

On the right of Chef Woody's tent is a construction pit where they are unearthing an old Sentinel and the Tornado. In front of the excavated Tornado is the nursing tent where Doc Ginger can be found. Behind the Tornado there is also a red gate that can be opened with the red Chaos Crystal. There is also another Hydro Gate on the coast, through which one can access a rocky island in the middle of the river.

Behind Chef Woody's tent is also a construction area where one can pay Robot Scrap to build scaffolds around the ruined Sentinel. Around it are also collectibles. To the east of the northern area, right next to Doc Ginger, is also the mining area. This area holds numerous mine carts on various rail tracks, each with a Bounce Pad on top of it to reach ledges above. There are also Spin Ramps for Sonic, Climbable Walls for Knuckles, and pink climbing edges for Amy. There is also the entrance to the Mines, an underground mining shaft network that are connected to an underground chamber from the Ancients which contains the Shock Crystal. Inside the Mines are also an excavation that can be expanded upon by paying Robot Scrap. Even further to the east lies the Raptor, a harbor-like area from the Ancients. To the west, behind the Sun Crystal's gate, lies Salty's house and the dock for his Riptide.

Notably, after clearing the Pit, the Tornado will disappear from its dig site and be moved with Cliff to the Raptor.

Story[]

A millennium ago, Cliff's Excavation Site was a center for the Ancients' civilization. After the Ancients imprisoned Lyric, they hid the Shock Crystal here to power Lyric's Tomb.

In the present, Cliff led an archaeological expedition to this location to find Lyric's tomb. Team Sonic later came here to ask Cliff for information on Lyric. The elder told them about Lyric's history and how he was imprisoned for attempting to destroy the world using his army of Sentinels. Begrudgingly, Sonic revealed they had released Lyric, so Cliff provided them with a plan: Lyric needed the Chaos Crystals to reboot his army so they would just have to get the Crystals first.

With Cliff's help, Team Sonic found the first Chaos Crystal in the Mines. On the way back, Knuckles and Amy met Foreman Fred and helped him free some trapped miners. Foreman Fred then gave them a Power Glyph as a reward.

Continuing onward, Team Sonic used their Chaos Crystal to find another and a map to the rest. Back at the site, Team Sonic met Salty who let them use his Riptide to reach the next Crystal after they repaired it. Returning with their next Crystal, Team Sonic met Cliff at the Raptor where the elder had an aircraft from the Ancients, the Tornado, which they used to reach Bygone Island and the last Chaos Crystals.

Gameplay[]

Cliff's Excavation Site is a free-roaming and non-linear area. It serves as a central hub from where the player can access the follow areas:

To enter these areas from Cliff's Excavation Site (with the exception of Lyric's Tomb), the player must unlock the sections containing their entrance points. This is done by using the correct Chaos Crystal at their respective Crystal Locks. In this level, the majority of the objectives focus on proceeding to the next area.

This level contains a variety of gimmicks, especially for the character actions for the playable characters. This includes Spin Ramps and Spin Balls for Sonic, Climbable Walls and diggable ground for Knuckles, Balance Beams and Beam Swings for Amy, Tails Vents for Tails and holes for Buddy Bot. In addition, there are Hydro Gates that let the player Hydro Dash on the river, but only after completing the Abandoned Research Facility. There are also giant rotating water mills on the surface of the river with Rings and collectibles on top of them that will damage the playable character if they touch them. The site also has a few speed level sections, where the player runs down a long path with speed-enhancing gimmicks while avoiding hazardous obstacles, which lead to collectibles or new sections.

From within this area, the player can participate in both obligatory and optional side-quests by interacting with the non-playable characters, though some cannot interacted with before reaching a certain point in the game. Completing the optional side-quests will award the player with either Power Glyphs or paths to new collectibles.

Cliff's Excavation Site has nearly no enemies, most of which are encountered during side-quests. There are also nearly no environment hazards besides the bottomless waters and turning wheels on the river that causes damage. There are also a few puzzles to solve with the Button and Enerbeam mechanic, through they are scarce.

Overview[]

When first entering Cliff's Excavation Site, the player has to go to Cliff at the construction pit to proceed. To get there, proceed through the canyon upon arriving there, and head towards the passage with the tree trunk in it. Ahead of it, the player will find the bridge connecting the river sides. After crossing the bridge, the player will find themselves in a small ravine with drilling machine in it. To get up to Cliff's camp site from there, the player has to move platforms connected to the drilling machines and Zip Targets into place. To do that, press the Button hidden underneath crates on each drilling machine (the one with the Zip Target requires first that the crate containing the Zip Target is destroyed however). The player can then utilize the platforms and Zip Target to scale the cliff. When landing up there, the player can then press a Button on the left to lower a bridge that will create a path to the Sun Crystal's Crystal Lock and make it easier to access Cliff's construction pit. From there, it will be a straight road to Cliff.

After talking to Cliff, the player has to enter the Mines. Start out by following Q-N-C to the mine cart area and press the Button on the mine cart next to him. This will move the mine cart into place and activate the Bounce Pad on it, allowing the player to reach the Mines on the cliff above the mine cart. Once inside the Mine, press the Button on the mine cart inside to unveil a Bounce Pad. Use it to reach an excavation of a Sentinel's hand. Here, use the AVA to find a cracked wall and destroy it to reveal the hidden path to the Shock Crystal. Upon arriving at a dead end though, break the wall on the left to unveil another hidden passage into the Crystal chamber. There, press the Button hidden behind the cracked wall in front of the chamber and a Zip Target will move into place. Use then the Bounce Pad on the left side of the chamber to reach the Zip Target and swing over to the other side of the chamber with the Enerbeam and press the Button hidden behind the cracked wall. When pressed, it will unveil a new Button in the chamber that, when pressed, will create the path to the Shock Crystal. After claiming the Crystal and returning to the Mine, the player will be able to help Foreman Fred save the miners from the mine in a special section available to Knuckles and Amy. There are mainly Climbable Walls, conveyor belts and mine carts in this section, as well as Ener-Rails that allow the player to travel between the two sections of the mine in 2.5D.

Once outside, the player must go to the Shock Crystal's Crystal Lock. After the gate has been opened, the player can use the Bounce Pads behind it to climb the cliff ahead. Once at the top, the player has to open another gate using the skills of three characters; Sonic must use the Spin Ball in the center; Tails must scale the cliff on the right using a Tails Vent and send Buddy Bot into the socket on the wall; and Amy must climb the Balance Beams and Beam Swings to reach the cliff on the left and press the Button there. This will open the passage to the Abandoned Research Facility. In addition, Lyric's Weapon Facility will follow immediately after the aforementioned level.

After returning to Cliff's Excavation Site from Lyric's Weapon Facility, the player can go to the Sun Crystal's Crystal Lock and unlock its gate. On the other side of the gate, the player has to ride the elevator up to the top of the cliff and talk to Salty. He will agree to lend Team Sonic the Riptide if they find three missing boat parts for it that are hidden nearby. At each of the locations for the parts, the player usually has to fight a group of Destruction Troops. After bringing all the parts to Salty, River Rush will be unlocked, which will lead to the Pit.

After returning to Cliff's Excavation Site with the red Chaos Crystal, the player can go to the Crystal's Crystal Lock and unlock its gate. On the other side of the gate is an extensive speed section. Here, the player will, in the beginning, be forced to run along a wooden bridge. After the first speed section, however, they can choose between continuing down another speed section or Hydro Dash the rest of the way. If choosing the former, the player has to to watch out for collapsing parts of the road, and if choosing the latter, they should watch out for water mills in the river. After reaching Cliff on the Raptor, the player will be able to fly the Tornado to Bygone Island.
