Climb (壁登り Kabenobori?), also known as Wall Climb (カベ登り Kabe nobori?), Climbing and Climb Walls, is a common technique used in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It first appeared in Sonic & Knuckles and is primarily by Knuckles the Echidna. When used, it allows the user to climb and scale vertical walls.

Description

Typically, to perform a Climb, the user must first Glide or jump towards a scalable wall. Once the user touches it, he/she will place their fists into the wall, making a stable bond and will begin to scale it.

Game Appearances

Sonic & Knuckles

The technique was introduced in Sonic & Knuckles. The technique allowed Knuckles to reach areas which were inaccessible to Sonic. It could be easily used in conjunction with the Glide technique, and at the time, Knuckles was the only user of Climb. When the player has glide to the wall, he/she can move by pressing up or down with D-pad and pressing jump button, the player normally jumps off the wall. Once the player has climbed to the top, he/she is able to move normally. During the game, there are some walls, where Knuckles is unable to climb on for unknown reason.

Knuckles is able to climb faster on walls, when he has got all Chaos Emeralds and transformed to Super Knuckles. Knuckles is able to climb on walls in locked-on versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Knuckles' Chaotix

Climbing returned in Knuckles' Chaotix as an ability usable by both Knuckles and Vector. Although Knuckles' version of the climb functions the exact same way as it does in Sonic & Knuckles, the player must hold the jump button down whilst climbing when playing as Vector.

Sonic Blast

In Sonic Blast, one of two playable characters Knuckles, is able to climb on walls with similar way to his previous appearances. The player is able to move Knuckles normally up or down and then jump off the wall to another. With climbing, the player is able to activate certain blue buttons on walls, which Knuckles is only able to access by climbing.

Sonic Adventure

In Sonic Adventure, Knuckles could once again perform Climb, making it the first appearance in a 3D, free-roaming environment. At this stage, Knuckles was still the only character able to use Climb.

Sonic Adventure 2

Later, in Sonic Adventure 2, the technique was learned by Rouge the Bat, who could use it in treasure hunting stages in the same method as Knuckles. Tikal and Chaos could also use the same Climb technique in the multiplayer modes. While climbing, the user could use Dig to find objects inside walls.

Sonic Advance series

In the Sonic Advance series, Knuckles was once again the only character able to use Climb. It was used in much the same manner as in Sonic & Knuckles.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Knuckles and Rouge could again perform Climb. Climb was used in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) in a very similar way as in the Sonic Adventure series, though much smoother, and also that neither Rouge nor Knuckles could Dig while climbing.

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood

In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Knuckles and Shade could both perform Climb outside of battle. The Climb ability was marked by a ladder symbol and was needed to reach high and otherwise inaccessible areas.

Sonic and the Black Knight

In Sonic and the Black Knight, where it is called Wall Climb, Sonic, Lancelot, Gawain and Percival can all perform this move, albeit only during the Missions in Adventure Mode. In this game, the users use their swords to scale walls.

When performing Wall Climb in gameplay, the player must press WiiDSA to move up. To move to left or right, the player must press WiiDSA while tilting the control stick to the side he/she wants to head. Pressing the Z Button will make the playable character come to a stop. While in a neutral state when using Wall Climb, the playable character will automatically use Wall Slide.
