Dr. Eggman, "Cowbot"

Cowbot is a character that appears in the Sonic Boom television series. It is a cow-based robot created by Dr. Eggman to battle Team Sonic. It is essentially a walking nuclear bomb that can cause mass destruction when destroyed (provided it is loaded with Mootonium).

Concept and creation

According to Bill Freiberger, when they moved onward with the premise for the "Cowbot" episode, they thought it would be funny if the killing machine looked silly. They eventually thought of a cow which led to the cow tipping joke, thus leading to the decision to design Cowbot as a cow.[1]

Appearance

Cowbot is designed after a bulky, non-anthropomorphic cow and is very large, over three-four times the size of Knuckles. It has a black and white body with a large front section and small grey front legs, and smaller hind quarters with large white hind legs. Each leg has a red ring on their upper joint. It also has a long yellow and black-striped tail, a pink udder with six mammary glands, and a thick grey neck with a cowbell around it. Its head is rectangular with a white upper left and lower right section, and it has two stubby yellow and black horns. When operating normally, its eyes glow blue, but when its stage two directive is activated, they glow red.

Season one

Cowbot was created by Dr. Eggman and programed with the mission to destroy Sonic. Deployed by Eggman to eliminate Team Sonic, the team hardly took Cowbot seriously until Eggman told them that it would vaporize them if they destroyed it. Once Eggman left, Cowbot began attacking before turning its attention to Sonic alone, unaware it was being distracted while the rest tipped it over. Tails then reversed Cowbot's programing, making it seek out Eggman to destroy him instead. At the same time, Cowbot's stage two directive was activated, which rendered all the defenses at Eggman's lair useless.[2]

Over half a day later, Cowbot arrived at Eggman's lair, where Sonic, Tails and Eggman were ready for it. As Cowbot tried to get through the lair's force field, Sonic reached it with a catapult and poured melted marshmallows into it, thus gunking up its machinery and shutting it down.[2] Restored some time afterwards, Cowbot was let out by the Lightning Bolt Society when they took over Eggman's lair, only to get blown up by a stray missile launched by the same group.[3] Due to a lack of Mootonium, however, it did not create a violent explosion.[4]

Season two

CowbotAttacks

Getting infected by malware from Hypnobot, Cowbot was compelled to join other infected robots in an attack on Hedgehog Village. There, it attacked Knuckles. Once Hypnobot's control was broken however, Cowbot was freed and returned to Eggman.[5] Cowbot fell under Hypnobot's command again though when he and Eggman made an alliance. Joining the villains' army for an invasion of Morristown, it helped carry Badniks into this robot city. When Cowbot attacked Bolts however, Mighton destroyed it in retaliation.[6]

In Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, Cowbot makes a small appearance on the High Score menu, holding the tenth place with a score of 100,000 points.

Personality

Like an actual cow, Cowbot displays an animalistic level of intelligence and can only speak by mooing, although it does possess an AI. It constantly wears a droopy and indifferent expression and is easy-going to the point of obliviousness. As per its programming, Cowbot is single-minded and unquestionably dedicated to hunting down and destroying its targets, be it either Sonic or its own creator, Dr. Eggman.[2]

Powers and abilities

According to Dr. Eggman, Cowbot is the most destructive force in the universe. Though this statement is likely exaggerated, it still hints that Cowbot possesses great destructive potential.[2]

Similar to a tank, Cowbot boasts a lot of power. It can also fire slimy cuds from its mouth as missiles.[2] These missiles can be electrified, allowing them to shock opponents upon impact.[5] It is as well capable of flight using rockets on its hooves. Like a real cow, it can also produce milk from its udder.[2] It also has compartment in its torso which it can use to transport lesser foot soldiers.[6]

Provided it is filled with Mootonium, a dangerous radioactive compound, Cowbot essentially becomes a walking nuclear bomb. Should Cowbot be destroyed, it can unleash an explosion which will vaporize anything within a twenty-mile radius.[2] As an Eggman robot, it is also able to receive power remotely from Eggman's lair.[7]

Weakness

While Cowbot possesses a lot of power, it is incredibly slow and greatly lacks agility and balance; it flies so slow that it takes it a day and half to travel just a few miles.[2] Also, being an Eggman robot, Cowbot relies on Eggman's lair to provide it with power. As such, should the lair run out of power, then it will too.[7]
