Conquer the Sky!

— Colors Trailer, Sonic Lost World

The Crimson Eagle (クリムゾン・イーグル Kurimuzon īguru?) is a transformation for potentially multiple users which appears in the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World. It is a Color Power gained by absorbing a Crimson Wisp and its Hyper-go-on, which turns the user into an eagle for flight.

Appearance

When using the Crimson Eagle, the user turns into a crimson-colored eagle-like figure. In Sonic's case, Sonic's entire body turns into a large version of his own head which no facial features except his eyes which are now pale yellow and without pupils, his ears which are behind his head and a beak-like appendage in place of his muzzle. Additionally, his two upper quills are spread out like wings, with three pink extensions similar to a bird's primaries.

Powers and abilities

As the Crimson Eagle, the user can utilize this form's wings to achieve flight and soar through the air unhindered. The Crimson Eagle's only known weakness is that it can only be used for a few seconds and requires more Hyper-go-on from Crimson Wisps to be maintained.

Gameplay

An example of the controls used for the Crimson Eagle.

The Crimson Eagle can first be used in Desert Ruins Zone 1. In gameplay, the player can only use the Crimson Eagle while in possession of a Crimson Wisp. Transforming into the Crimson Eagle will cause the Wisp Gauge to start depleting, and once it runs out, the user will revert back to normal. To extend its duration, the player has to collect more Crimson Wisps. Also, touching the ground or flying into a wall as the Crimson Eagle will also negate the transformation.

If the player is in an area not suited for the Crimson Eagle, the Crimson Wisp will go dormant (which is illustrated by its icon sleeping), thus preventing the player from becoming the Crimson Eagle.

The player can transform into the Crimson Eagle by tapping the icon of the Crimson Wisp on the top right corner of the GamePad screen, upon which Sonic will transform and take off into the air, allowing the player to pass through the Zone in midair. The player must tilt the Wii U GamePad or the Left Stick to move the Crimson Eagle left and right. The player can also tilt it upward and/or downward to make the Crimson Eagle go up or down. The Crimson Eagle can also do a forward midair dash by pressing WiiDSA/DSB, though this consumes the Wisp Gauge faster. Additionally, the Crimson Eagle will attract any nearby Rings it passes by.

Trivia

  • The Crimson Eagle has a similar ability to the Green Hover Color Power from the Green Wisp that appears on Sonic Colors.
  • So far, this is the only Color Power that is based on an animal.
  • Originally, the Crimson Eagle could only be controlled with the gyroscope controls. However, a patch was later released which let players control it with the analog stick and buttons too.
  • The sound created when dashing as a Crimson Eagle is very similar if not identical to the Shadow Rifle and Chaos Lance.
