Croctobot[1] is a transformation that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It was a fusion of Badnik Sub-Bosses Crocbot and Octobot created by Dr. Eggman.

Concept and creation[]

The idea for Croctobot was created by writer Karl Bollers, who planned to introduce him as the new Sub-Boss of Downunda following Sonic the Hedgehog's year in space. In this original plan, Croctobot would have had a split personality based on the two robots that had been joined to create him.[2] However, Bollers left the series before he could write this version of the transformation. As such, writer Ian Flynn would pick up the design, and finally introduce it in Sonic the Hedgehog #160.[1]

Appearance[]

Croctobot's body essentially resembles Crocbot's salvaged upper body attached to the top of Octobot's head. However, of note is that in this form, Crocbot's eyes are colored their original black shade, and Octobot's tentacles are colored orange as opposed to gray.[1]

History[]

Birthday Bash![]

On Sonic the Hedgehog's birthday, Doctor Eggman sent Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polar Bear to attack Freedom HQ. After this attack failed (Eggman claiming that he should "Never trust a Mobian to do a robot's job"), Eggman launched Croctobot in an egg-shaped one-way transport, which landed (forming a crater) just outside the HQ.[1]

Upon seeing the robot, Sonic burst into a fit of laughter, calling Croctobot the "lamest-badnik-ever!" When Sonic pulled himself together, he was able to knock Croctobot out with a single Sonic Spin to its head.

At this moment, Rouge the Bat and the newly-named Scourge the Hedgehog used Chaos Control to teleport to the party using the Master Emerald. Before Sonic and Scourge could start fighting, Croctobot woke up and entangled Sonic, Scourge and Shadow in its tentacles. Croctobot accused Shadow of not helping him (Shadow having attended Sonic's birthday to thank him for previously saving Hope Kintobor's life), saying that he would report Shadow as a traitor to Robotnik, but Shadow responded simply "No. You won't." The three hedgehogs teamed up and ripped Croctobot apart with a succession of Spin Dashes, leaving nothing but scrap.[3]

Powers and abilities[]

Croctobot can use its eight tentacles to attack foes with a crushing grip.[3]

Weakness[]

Croctobot's body is very weak to Sonic Spins, allowing performers of the move to tear through the robot with ease.[3]

Trivia[]

  • Croctobot's line from Sonic the Hedgehog #161, "I still function!" is a reference to 1986's The Transformers: The Movie. In the movie, the villain Megatron - barely able to move after a disastrous battle with the heroic Optimus Prime - says "Wait, I still function!" before being overthrown by his second-in-command, Starscream.
