Croctobot

Croctobot was a Badnik created by Doctor Eggman by merging the Sub-Bosses Crocbot and Octobot into a single robot.

History

On Sonic the Hedgehog's birthday, Doctor Eggman sent Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polarbear to attack Freedom HQ. After this attack failed (Eggman claiming that he should "Never trust a Mobian to do a robot's job"), Eggman launched Croctobot in an egg-shaped one-way transport, which landed (forming a crater) just outside the HQ.

Upon seeing the robot, Sonic burst into a fit of laughter, calling Croctobot the "lamest—badnik—ever!" When Sonic pulled himself together, he was able to knock Croctobot out with a single Spin Attack to the Crocbot-head.

At this moment, Rouge the Bat and the newly-named Scourge the Hedgehog and used Chaos Control to teleport to the party using the Master Emerald. Before Sonic and Scourge could start fighting, Croctobot woke up and entangled Sonic, Scourge and Shadow in its tentacles. Croctobot accused Shadow of not helping him (Shadow having attended Sonic's birthday to thank him for previously saving Hope Kintobor's life), saying that he would report Shadow as a traitor to Robotnik, but Shadow responded simply "No. You won't." The three hedgehogs teamed up and ripped Croctobot apart with a succession of Spin Attacks, leaving nothing but scrap.

Description

Croctobot's body was essentially Crocbot's salvaged upper body attached to the top of Octobot's head. This equipped Croctobot with both sharp claws and tentacles, as well as two heads that spoke in unison.

Croctobot was affronted at Sonic's claim that the robot was not imposing, and blustered that he was terrifying and should be feared.

Croctobot did not show any regard for Tails, even though Tails had a hand in destroying both Crocbot and Octobot during separate battles. Croctobot also appeared loyal to Eggman, even claiming that he would report Shadow the Hedgehog (then working for Eggman) as a traitor, despite Crocbot's previous intentions to overthrow Robotnik himself.

Trivia

• The idea for Croctobot was created by writer Karl Bollers, who planned to introduce him as the new Sub-Boss of Downunda following Sonic the Hedgehog's year in space. In this original plan, Croctobot would have had a split personality based on the two robots that had been joined to create him.
  • After Karl Boller's departure from the comic following Sonic the Hedgehog #134, the original plan for the character was dropped, but the character itself was used later by new writer Ian Flynn in his first issue, Sonic the Hedgehog #160.
• Croctobot's line from Sonic the Hedgehog #161, "I still function!" is a reference to 1986's The Transformers: The Movie. In the movie, the villain Megatron—barely able to move after a disastrous battle with the heroic Optimus Prime—says "Wait, I still function!" before being overthrown by his second-in-command, Starscream.
