The Dark Gaia Creatures, also known as the Dark Gaia Monsters, are a species that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. They are a race of hostile, supernatural monsters tied to a dark mutagenic energy created by Dark Gaia that emerged during the Shattered World Crisis.

Description[]

Anatomy[]

StH 262 Dark Guardian

The Dark Guardian, from Sonic the Hedgehog #262.

The members of the Dark Gaia Creatures are very diverse in terms of anatomy. Many of them resemble anthropomorphic lizards with horns, sharp teeth and and claws, or nightmarish cyclops. Others also come in more animal-like forms such as insectoid bees, bulldog-like dinosaurs, sphere-shaped bats and large horned eels. Physical characteristics they do share include blackish blue skin and differently colored neon markings on their bodies.

Their bodies are entirely composed of the Dark Gaia energy that began leaking from the planet during the Shattered World Crisis.[1]

Characteristics and culture[]

The Dark Gaia Creatures are animalistic in nature, only giving off roars and growls. They are extremely ravenous, hostile and aggressive, attacking anyone near them and wreaking havoc wherever they go.

The Dark Gaia Creatures are exclusively nocturnal creatures, only appearing after nightfall.

Powers and abilities[]

The Dark Gaia Creatures are amphibious, capable of roaming about both on land and beneath the sea without the need of air, hinting a total lack of respiration. While the smaller Dark Gaia Creatures do not possess exceedingly great strengths and relies on overwhelming their foes with numbers, the larger ones amongst them, such as the Dark Gaia Titan, possess superhuman strength and durability. When a Dark Gaia Creature takes enough damage, it dissolves back to its basic energy form.

History[]

Shattered World Crisis[]

Act One[]

Nightmares surrounding Knuckles

Knuckles being engulfed by a horde of Nightmares, from Sonic Universe #63.

Shortly after the beginning of the Shattered World Crisis, the Dark Gaia Creatures emerged as coalesced forms of the dark energy that had begun leaking from beneath Sonic's World. Due to the dark energies' properties, Bunnie D'Coolette theorized the Dark Gaia Creature were mobini mutated by this energy.[2]

With their arrival, the Dark Gaia Creatures began emerging in various locations across the globe, wrecking havoc wherever they went and complicating various group's attempts to resolve the Shattered World Crisis. One concentration of them appeared in Westopolis which were detained by the local law enforcement and G.U.N.,[2] while another appeared Pumpkin Hill Zone which Knuckles the Echidna and the Chaotix had to clear out.[3]

Dark Gaia Creatures also began climbing from the fault lines of the planet to the Aquatic Mine Zone, where a Dark Gaia Titan attacked Knuckles, the Chaotix and the Hooligans. While Knuckles and the Chaotix fought the Dark Gaia Titan, the Hooligans escaped with Chip and the red Chaos Emerald while trapping Knuckles and the Chaotix in the now flooding mines with the Dark Gaia Titan.[4] However, Vector the Crocodile brew up an idea using the switches found throughout the mine to filter the water through a tunnel below the water. Activating the switch, the Chaotix and Knuckles managed to survive from drowning, but the Dark Gaia Titan followed them back. However, thanks to Charmy Bee's quick thinking, Bean the Dynamite was told that the Dark Gaia Titan insulted his bombs. Bean brutally bombarded the monster with is bombs thereafter. As the Hooligans left to find the Chaos Emerald, Knuckles successfully finished off the Dark Gaia Titan.[5]

EelVSFighters

Dark Gaia Creatures facing Sonic, Rotor, Razor and Crusher, from Sonic the Hedgehog #261.

A large concentration of Dark Gaia Creatures began emerging from the Anostos Rift near the underwater city of Meropis and infected the waters at night, though they were kept out of Meropis by the city's watery shield.[2][6] However, Coral the Betta, the sustainer of the shield, was eventually unable to maintain it due to emotional stress, causing the shield to break down and allowing the Dark Gaia Creatures to attack the city and the Eusebes Shrine.[6] The Dark Guardian led the Dark Gaia Creatures to Meropis, which they not only clashed with the Meropis City Guard, but they also fought against Sonic the Hedgehog, Amy Rose, Rotor the Walrus, and Razor the Shark at the sacred grounds.[1] Luckily, with the power of Chaos and Tikal, the Dark Gaia Creatures were obliterated by a chain-Mystic Melody caused by Coral, Pearly the Manta Ray, and Tikal with additional power by Aquarius.[7]

Nightmares 2spooky4you

Dark Gaia Creatures surrounding Antoine and the Werehog, from Sonic the Hedgehog #272.

In Apotos, the town was overrun by Dark Gaia Creatures, but they were stopped by Sonic the Werehog and Antoine D'Coolette. Soon, a Dark Gaia Titan with an Emerald Shard lodged in its chest appeared. Antoine managed to free the shard while Knuckles and Amy finished it off.[8] Later on, Rotor, Miles "Tails" Prower, Sally Acorn, and Big the Cat would fight off a horde of Dark Gaia Creatures that attacked the Sky Patrol. Luckily, the sun rose and made the creatures vanish.[9] The following night, Dark Gaia Creatures would emerge on Isolated Island and attempt to attack Sally and Dr. Ellidy. Tails and Big thus barricaded the door to Ellidy's house to prevent the Dark Gaia Creatures and the Phage-controlled Badniks from entering.[10] Tails and Big then went to the Lake of Rings where several Dark Gaia Creatures destroyed Ellidy's vehicle. There, they attacked the duo until Ellidy regained control over his Badniks. The creatures were soon after driven away.[11]

Act Two[]

BigVEels

Big fights two Dark Eels, from Sonic the Hedgehog #279.

Several Dark Gaia Creatures, including several Nightmares and a Dark Gaia Titan, would roam Eggman Land at night.[12] Battle Lord Kukku XV would destroy the Nightmares while Dr. Eggman and Axel the Water Buffalo destroyed the Dark Gaia Titan.[13]

At night in the Arid Sands Zone, Big was ambushed by two Dark Eels. However, he would destroy both of them. Through Chip’s quick thinking, he, Big, and Sonar the Fennec led Dark Gaia Creatures into the nearby Gaia Temple in order to distract the Midesta Egg Army long enough to free Ehsan.[14] When Dark Gaia later emerged, all remaining Dark Gaia Creatures on the planet were drawn back into the massive creature.[15]
