Now Grimer, take us down to the surface of Planet Mobius! It is time for the Emerald Hill Folk to tremble... ...and quake with fear at my awesome power and unstoppable Death Egg!

Dr. Ivo Robotnik, Sonic the Comic #45

The Death Egg II,[1] usually referred to as just the Death Egg, is an object that appears in the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions. It was a newer version of the previous Death Egg created by Dr. Ivo Robotnik, but was every bit as deadly as its predecessor. Due to a malfunction, the Death Egg crashed on the Floating Island during its first flight, where it underwent heavy repairs. Though the Death Egg was eventually relaunched, the satellite was brought down for good by the combined efforts of Sonic the Hedgehog and Knuckles the Echidna.

The Death Egg II was colossal in size and was able to hover at relatively low altitudes over Mobius. It carried all the facilities necessary for Dr. Robotnik to work with, including a laboratory,[2] a surveillance center and a hangar. It was designed to run off the energy of an infinite energy source, namely the Master Emerald.[3]

In terms of armament, the Death Egg had various weapons installed. These included massive disintegrator rays incorporated into the "eyes" of the Death Egg which were capable of annihilating entire Zones.[4][5] The Death Egg also carried a substantial force of Robotnik's robots and weaponry, including vehicles and Badnik troops like EggRobos and Spikebonkers (the latter which acted as the Death Egg's security system).[6]

History[]

After the abandonment of the original Death Egg, Dr. Robotnik eventually constructed the Death Egg II. However, it fell out of orbit on its first flight (while Robotnik was still aboard) and landed in the Ice Cap Zone on the Floating Island. The crash site was discovered and investigated by Knuckles the Echidna, whom Robotnik tricked into believing that he was a humble scientist and that Sonic planned to steal his Chaos Emeralds.[1][7] Knuckles thus allowed Robotnik to set up his Launch Base Zone on the Floating Island in order to repair the Death Egg and relaunch it.[8]

During the Death Egg's repairs, numerous setbacks occurred. This included Knuckles' betrayal, making the echidna seek the destruction of the Death Egg and everything else Robotnik had brought to the island,[9] and the Freedom Fighters preventing the delivery of the Death Egg's new main thruster.[10][11] Ultimately though, the satellite was repaired.[3]

With the Death Egg completed, Robotnik sent Metallix to steal the Master Emerald for him to use as a power source for the Death Egg.[3] Although Metallix was destroyed by Super Sonic, it nevertheless succeeded in delivering the Master Emerald to a teleporter which Robotnik used to warp the Master Emerald onboard the Death Egg, allowing the launch to proceed.[12]

The Floating Island attacks

As the Death Egg headed towards the Emerald Hill Zone to destroy it, Sonic infiltrated the Death Egg in an attempt to stop Robotnik and recover the Master Emerald, blasting through its army of Badniks. Meanwhile, Knuckles activated the Floating Island's ancient control systems, using its remaining chaos energy to pilot the Floating Island towards the Death Egg, and then fire a succession of powerful energy blasts into the Death Egg's hull.[5][6] These attacks crippled the station, forcing the Death Egg to counterattack. This gave Sonic the distraction he needed to recover the Master Emerald, thereby depriving the Death Egg of its power source. Receiving a final shot from the Floating Island, the Death Egg was utterly finished and plummeted back down to the surface of Mobius, although Robotnik and his armies were able to escape.[5][13]
