Sonic must defeat the massive Mecha Sonic before his final showdown against Dr. Eggman in his Death Egg Robot mecha.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Death Egg Robot,[1] also known as the Death Egg[2] (デスエッグ[2][3] Desu Eggu?) or Robot Eggman[4] (ロボ・エッグマン[4] Robo Egguman?, lit. "Robo Eggman"), is the second boss of Death Egg Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, its various ports and remasters, and the lock-on game Knuckles in Sonic 2; and the eleventh and final boss in these games overall. It is also the eleventh and last boss in Boss Attack Zone in the 2013 remaster of the game.

In the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Death Egg Robot is fought with Sonic or Tails, while in Knuckles in Sonic 2 and the 2013 remaster of the game, it can also be fought with Knuckles. In Sonic Origins Plus, it can also be fought with Amy.

Boss guide[]

The boss fight takes place in a large room within the Death Egg. Before the battle starts, the player chases Dr. Robotnik through a short corridor that leads to the large room with the inactive Death Egg Robot on the right. Once the doctor reaches it, he will pilot it to fight the player.

When the battle begins, the Death Egg Robot will start out by moving slowly to the left, taking four steps in that direction before taking a smaller step to the right. Then, it will activate its jetpack and fly off the screen. Then, a lock-on target will appear and follow the playable character. Soon, the lock-on will start flashing and the Death Egg Robot will slam down, trying to squash the player. Depending on the playable character's position on the screen, the Death Egg Robot will perform the following attack:

  • If the player is behind the Death Egg Robot, it will crouch and launch a pair of spherical mines from the top of its jetpack. These mines will land parallelly a few inches away from the robot. Then, the Death Egg Robot will launch another pair of mines that will land near it, before flying off-screen again.
  • If the player is in front of the Death Egg Robot, the latter will crouch and fire its arms towards the playable character. Dodging these arms can be tricky, as they move very quickly. However, they will be unable to reach the playable character if the latter is too far away from them. Next, the Death Egg Robot will fly off-screen.

Next, the Death Egg Robot will perform the following attack depending on the player's position once again:

  • If the player is behind the Death Egg Robot, it will crouch and launch a pair of mines from the top of its jetpack. These mines will land parallelly near the robot. Then, the Death Egg Robot will take four steps towards the direction it is facing, before taking a smaller step to the opposite direction and flying off-screen.
  • If the player is in front of the Death Egg Robot, the latter will simply take four steps towards the playable character before taking a smaller step to the opposite direction and fly off of the screen once again.

The Death Egg Robot will then perform one of the first moves once again, followed by one of the second ones. This will repeat throughout the battle. This boss fight is particularly hard because of the fact that the player will have no Rings throughout the boss fight (although some Rings might be granted to the player in extra modes in most remasters of the game). To damage the Death Egg Robot, the player must avoid touching the arms, the legs, and the jetpack, as they will hurt their character; and instead go for the casing, which can be hit with a well-timed Spin Jump. To defeat the Death Egg Robot, the player must hit its casing a total twelve times. After this, the Death Egg will begin to explode and the playable character will go the right automatically, the ending sequence playing.

When playing as Knuckles, the Death Egg Robot boss fight will be much harder due to Knuckles' lower Spin Jump, making it impossible for him to hit the mech's casing unless it crouches. However, by standing between the robot's legs and jetpack before the battle starts, the player can jump twice to land two hits to the robot. This can be done once again right before the Death Egg Robot flies off for the first time. This method will allow the player to land four hits on the Death Egg Robot before it makes its first attack, granting them a significant advantage when playing as Knuckles.

The boss fight is much easier when fought as Amy, as her Jump Attack can be able to hit the Death Egg Robot with much less risk of touching the arms.
