Dr. Ivo Robotnik (ドクター・ロボトニック Dokutā Robotonikku?, lit. "Doctor Robotnik"),[3] better known by the alias Dr. Eggman (ドクター・エッグマン Dokutā Egguman?),[4] is the main antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is a human and the arch-nemesis of Sonic the Hedgehog. This large scientist with an IQ of 300[1] dreams of dominating the world, but his constant plots to create his Eggman Empire are always thwarted by Sonic and his friends.
While the doctor's plans initially consisted of building incredible armies by turning animals into robots and using them to dominate the land, Dr. Eggman's schemes have since branched into much more global threats as he built war machines, used nuclear devices to threaten entire nations, and even relied on mythological and ancient deities bent on destruction to achieve his goals. Eventually, the mad scientist has gone as far as to target the entire universe and cooked up schemes to control time and space itself.
While all these plans end in failure thanks to the continued efforts of Sonic and his friends, the mad doctor is somehow always able to slip away from certain death or imprisonment and escape at the last moment, making him a constant threat to the universe and a thorn in Sonic's side.
Concept and creation

In April 1990, Sega petitioned its research and development department, AM8 (later became Sonic Team), to create a character who would replace Alex Kidd as the company's mascot, as well as compete against Nintendo's flagship character, Mario. A caricature of Theodore Roosevelt in pajamas was among the proposed designs. Combined with the idea of an egg-shaped character, it eventually became the basis of the visual design for Dr. Eggman. In creating the "bad guy" for the Sonic series, the development team wanted a character who was "the opposite of Sonic"; a character who represented "machinery" and "development" to play on the then-growing debate between developers and environmentalists. The character was also designed to be easy for children to draw.
Although Eggman was always depicted as having pince-nez glasses in Japanese media, initial American localized material, including the covers for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, frequently depicted Robotnik as having no eyes in his eye sockets (or, in the case of various cartoon adaptations, having black scelera and red pupils), and was not depicted with eyewear in localized materials until Sonic Adventure.

The original English instruction manual for his 1991 debut game Sonic the Hedgehog described the character's full name as "Doctor Ivo Robotnik" while the Japanese version's instruction manual for the same game called him "Doctor Eggman"; "Robotnik" was initially conceived as the western name for the character. In 1998's Sonic Adventure, he was referred to with both names, the doctor calling himself "Robotnik" and the rest of the characters naming him "Eggman", with all following English releases to date referring to him as the latter.
Yuji Naka has explained that Robotnik is the character's true last name while Eggman is a "common name taken after his shape."
While "Robotnik" is still occasionally recognized in more recent titles (such as in Sonic Generations), Eggman's profiles such as the one on the Japanese Sonic Channel and Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II list his full birth name as unknown.
Appearance
Dr. Eggman's physical appearance has varied through the series, but in general, he is depicted as being rotund in appearance, with dark-colored pants and leggings, white gloves a red top, a bald head, pince-nez glasses with blue lenses, a bright red nose, and a very bushy auburn moustache. Early on, he wore a red shirt with an oversized yellow collar, as well as gray buckles on his pants.
In more recent times, he wears a red coat with white stripes across the chest linking to yellow buckles and across the sleeves, with yellow cuffs on the end and two extensions that have large white buttons; silver linings to his black pants/leggings as well as circular bolt-like ornaments to his heels, as well as a device atop his head that's presumably some lab goggles.
In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), he was given a radically different appearance owing to the more realistic designs of the game. In particular, he has yellow bolt-like buttons on his red coat where the buckles were originally, as well as a slightly raised collar obscuring his chin. The moustache, while still bushy, also looks more groomed, and he also, while still overweight, looks very lean by comparison to his usual designs. His nose is also colored the same as the rest of his skin.
History
Past
In his childhood, Ivo looked up to his grandfather, Prof. Gerald Robotnik as a hero, and believed him to be a great man who had done his best to help mankind. Thus he decided to follow in his grandfather's footsteps and became a scientist, as well as pursue a teaching degree (apparently because he liked telling people what to do). However, he became obsessed with the idea of an entire world under his rule, utterly convinced with his twisted belief that the results of a world conquest orchestrated by him would make the world a better place and benefit all its inhabitants.[5] Using his unmatched genius, Eggman began his plans, spending his entire life on his self-righteous mission.[5]
At some point after setting out on his quest for global domination, Dr. Robotnik met Sonic the Hedgehog. While the nature of their meeting is unknown, the two of them eventually became rivals, with Sonic proving to be Dr. Robotnik's greatest enemy. After their meeting, Dr. Robotnik made several attempts to conquer the world, but at every turn, his plans were laid to waste by Sonic.[6]
Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)

Robotnik’s first appearance was in the 1991 video game Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. He attempted to find the powerful Chaos Emeralds by conquering South Island and turning its Animals into robots. Launching a full-scale assault, Robotnik was able to seize control over countless cities, factories, and lands, and transformed them into his image and polluted the very environment with his fortresses. Robotnik ordered his vast army to search for the Chaos Emeralds and build weapons of mass destruction so that his dominance would never be challenged. Luckily, Sonic the Hedgehog sped to the rescue, defeated Robotnik, saved the animals from being turned into Badniks, and retrieved the Chaos Emeralds. Thus the island was restored to its former, peaceful state.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Mega Drive
In the 1992 sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, the notorious Robotnik created the Death Egg, a huge, orbital space station during another attempt at world domination. He attacked West Side Island, turning its animals into robots and searching for all seven Chaos Emeralds. He was intercepted by Sonic and his sidekick Miles "Tails" Prower, who saved the animals and retrieved the Chaos Emeralds before the evil scientist. Sonic infiltrated the Death Egg, sending the Death Egg crashing back to Earth and defeating Robotnik again.
Game Gear/Master System
In the 1992 sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit) for the Sega Game Gear and Master System, Robotnik kidnaps Tails and several of Sonic's animal friends for ransom in an attempt to lure the Chaos Emeralds from Sonic, stating that the only way he can get Tails back is to give him the six Chaos Emeralds, which the blue hedgehog eventually does. Robotnik is eventually defeated when Sonic faces his latest invention at the Crystal Egg Zone, proceeding to save Tails.
Sonic Chaos
In the 1993 title Sonic Chaos, Robotnik steals the Chaos Emeralds from South Island, thus destabilizing the island and forcing it to sink into the ocean, with Sonic and Tails heading out to stop him, which they eventually do, thus resulting in another defeat for Robotnik.
Sonic the Hedgehog CD

In Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Dr. Robotnik appears once again as the main antagonist. In this game, he invaded Little Planet to find the Time Stones, which would let him control time, where he created a robot army of Badniks using the seeds of Little Planet.
Robotnik also builds his greatest creation yet, Metal Sonic (who kidnaps local inhabitant Amy Rose) as a means of finally defeating Sonic.
Robotnik's plan ultimately fails when he is defeated by his arch-nemesis once again at his base of operations, the Metallic Madness.
SegaSonic the Hedgehog

In SegaSonic the Hedgehog, Dr. Robotnik captured Sonic, Mighty and Ray and imprisoned them on Eggman Island where he planned to execute them. Though Sonic, Mighty and Ray broke out of their cell, Robotnik blew them to the other side of his island. From there, Robotnik remained in his control tower where he tried to stop the trio's advances. When Sonic, Mighty and Ray got to him however, Robotnik triggered the tower to self-destruct within twenty seconds. Though Robotnik got away, his last plan failed as Sonic, Mighty and Ray escaped in time.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and its expansion Sonic & Knuckles (both released in 1994), Robotnik managed to land the Death Egg on the legendary Floating Island and tricked the island’s guardian, Knuckles the Echidna into thinking Sonic and Tails are villaind after the Chaos Emeralds, knowing that Sonic will not be far behind to finish his old nemesis once and for all. In the Japanese manual, Dr. Eggman states that he is a noble scientist who seeks to use his scientific knowledge to better the world with the use of his space station, the Death Egg. He claims that Sonic stole the seven Chaos Emeralds from the land and used them to destroy his scientific achievements for his own ends. However, Robotnik was truly planning on deceiving Knuckles once he served his usefulness and take off with the Chaos Emeralds once the Death Egg was repaired.
Knuckles believes in Robotnik's deception and steals the Chaos Emeralds from Sonic when he first arrives, placing them in strategic locations to be given to Robotnik later, and hinders the hedgehog throughout his journey. Robotnik, in the meantime, constructs fortresses and strongholds throughout the island and builds up his army again with the use of the island's animals. When Sonic and Tails arrive on the island, Robotnik launches a full scale assault that destroys a large portion of the island's jungles and begins his battles with Sonic anew.
Through several more battles, Robotnik is again defeated again when Sonic and Tails rush to the Launch Base Zone and prevents the Death Egg from relaunching. When the chase finally takes Robotnik to the Hidden Palace, he confirms the presence of the massive and powerful Master Emerald - which Knuckles protects with his life. He steals it during a scuffle with Knuckles, and uses it to get the Death Egg into space once again. With help from the newly-allied Knuckles, Sonic and Tails are able to chase the madman into space. During their climatic battle, the Death Egg is completely crumbled. Robotnik makes one last chance to escape with the Master Emerald, but Sonic transforms into Hyper Sonic with the Super Emeralds (Master Emerald-powered Chaos Emeralds), and his ambition is thwarted once again. The Master Emerald is returned to Knuckles, and the Floating Island regains its namesake.
After his defeat, Robotnik sends a powerful Eggrobo badnik and Mecha Sonic (who had survived his battle with Sonic back in the Sky Sanctuary Zone) to eliminate Knuckles and recover the Master Emerald, but they are ultimately defeated by the guardian.
Sonic Triple Trouble

In the 1994 title Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble, Dr. Robotnik had all of the Chaos Emeralds on his hands. However, a Badnik of his screws up and accidentally drops them, with the doctor managing to save one. Robotnik, knowing that Sonic and Tails were bound to come, tricks Knuckles the Echidna into believing that Sonic and Tails are out to steal the gems, thus creating a convenient distraction for them on their way to defeat the mad doc.
Robotnik, however, also has to contend with Fang the Sniper who is out to steal the emeralds for profit. Eventually, Knuckles is defeated by Sonic and Tails, ending up captured by Robotnik in an energy cage in the Atomic Destroyer. Robotnik then leaves Metal Sonic to deal with Sonic and Tails. When Metal is defeated, Robotnik himself faces the heroic duo, but is beaten once more, dropping the last Chaos Emerald and fleeing. After their final confrontation with the mad scientist, Sonic and Tails find Knuckles, proceeding to free him from his prison and befriending the echidna as well, sharing a handshake before escaping all three together.
Sonic 3D Blast
In Sonic 3D Blast, Dr. Robotnik learns of the Flickies, a bird species who are able to transport between dimensions, and thus wants to use their abilities to help him gain the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, decide to visit their friends at Flicky Island, however all they see is a bunch of Badnik robots.
Sonic vows to defeat Robotnik and save them, with Tails and Knuckles helping out along the way. Robotnik is eventually defeated once again, and peace is restored to Flicky Island.
Sonic the Fighters

In Sonic the Fighters, Dr. Robotnik rebuilds the Death Egg, and uses it to destroy the world. Tails, upon discovering this, builds a rocket powered by a mysterious eight Chaos Emerald.
He holds a competition to see who gets the gems. Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Fang, Bean the Dynamite, Espio the Chameleon, and Bark the Polar Bear all participate in the tournament, fighting one another to see who reaches Robotnik.
Eventually, the winner reaches the Death Egg II, and defeats Metal Sonic and Robotnik at the Death Egg, saving the world once more.
Knuckles' Chaotix
In Knuckles' Chaotix, a mysterious island is formed due to the power of the Master Emerald. Dr. Robotnik travels to the place so he could exploit the ancient power of the Dark Ring to conquer the world, assisted by his right-hand minion, Metal Sonic.
Knuckles arrives to investigate, and sees Espio being held prisoner. The echidna also frees Mighty the Armadillo, Vector the Crocodile, and Charmy Bee, forming the Chaotix and working together to stop Robotnik. They are joined by two defectors from Robotnik, Heavy the Robot and Bomb.
In the end, Knuckles and his crew manage to gather all of the six Chaos Rings (which held the Dark Ring's power) and defeated Robotnik again
Sonic Adventure
After these devastating defeats at Sonic's hands, Robotnik's power was diminished a great deal, his forces were largely destroyed, and the villain was no closer to achieving his goal of world domination. Desperate to find alternative means to resume his plans and dominate everything, Dr. Robotnik, at some time prior to the events of Sonic Adventure, had set up shop in the Mystic Ruins. It was here that he discovered the ancient ruined temple left behind by the echidna race and the stone tablets describing the ancient 'god of destruction', a being known to the echidnas as Chaos.
After studying the tablets, Dr. Robotnik learned that Chaos still existed within the Master Emerald, located on Angel Island; the doctor had found the perfect means to conquer the world that didn't rely solely on his machinery. He took his new airborne battleship, the Egg Carrier, to the island in hopes of releasing Chaos from his prison. A swift long-range attack from the Carrier shattered the Master Emerald to pieces and thus released the liquid creature, as well as the spirit of Tikal, a member of the echidnas (though Robotnik was apparently unaware of her existence).
Having released Chaos, Robotnik expected the creature to aid him in his goal of world domination. In order to strengthen the creature, Robotnik immediately began seeking the Chaos Emeralds which he would allow Chaos to consume, thereby becoming more powerful. The first Chaos Emerald was taken from Tails, who had accidentally found it while testing a new plane. The second Emerald Robotnik stole from Sonic (who had won it in Casinopolis) by ambushing him outside the casino in Station Square. Robotnik continued to observe the activities of Sonic and Tails who were frantically trying to gather the Emeralds to prevent him from empowering Chaos, and also managed to fool Knuckles (again) into thinking that they were trying to interfere with his mission to collect the Master Emerald shards (Knuckles initially mistook Robotnik's Chaos Emerald for a Master Emerald shard, which Robotnik promptly used to his advantage). Sonic and Knuckles ran into each other in the Mystic Ruins where Knuckles - believing Sonic to be carrying Master Emerald pieces - attacked Sonic and Tails. Sonic and Tails dropped the Chaos Emeralds they had collected after colliding with Knuckles, and Dr. Robotnik was there waiting for them. He took both Emeralds and fed them to Chaos, who transformed into his fourth phase.
The doctor obtained two more Chaos Emeralds by sending his E-100 robots to hunt down Froggy who had swallowed an Emerald (and also Chaos's tail) and by capturing Amy Rose and her little Flicky friend (which kept a Chaos Emerald inside its locket). With six of the gems in his possession and all his minions assembled on the Egg Carrier, Robotnik nearly raised Chaos to perfect level. However, due to the efforts of Sonic, Knuckles and Big the Cat (and to his own bungling by using freezing weapons) Robotnik lost the Emeralds when Chaos was apparently defeated, still no match for Sonic despite having six Emeralds powering him.
The Egg Carrier was heavily damaged by the fighting and crashed just off the coast of Station Square. Having lost his ship and Chaos, Dr. Robotnik resorted to launching a nuclear missile in order to destroy Station Square. The missile failed to detonate on impact, and was disarmed completely by Tails. In anger, Robotnik attacked Tails in his Egg Walker machine. Tails managed to defeat him, however, and the doctor retreated to his Final Egg base in the Mystic Ruins where he would regroup and begin concocting new ways to destroy Station Square.
As he returned to his base, Robotnik was pursued by Sonic (who had landed in the jungle after attacking Robotnik as he fled the falling Egg Carrier). Robotnik engaged in one final showdown with Sonic in his base, using his newest mecha - the Egg Viper. This failed to defeat Sonic also and was destroyed, and Robotnik's base was leveled.

Retreating through the jungle, Robotnik discovered Chaos had survived his battle on the Egg Carrier. Chaos had gone rogue and attacked Robotnik, who fled toward Angel Island to seek help from Knuckles. Chaos followed him there and found six of the Chaos Emeralds (Knuckles had retrieved them after beating Chaos on the Egg Carrier), taking them all and knocking out both Knuckles and Robotnik. Sonic and Tails arrived shortly after to investigate why Angel Island had not yet ascended back into the sky, and found Knuckles and the doctor unconscious. When he recovered, Robotnik vowed to take revenge on Chaos and set off back to his ruined base, where a back-up Egg Carrier was docked.
When Chaos became Perfect Chaos after consuming the last Emerald, the monster traveled to Station Square and flooded the city, leaving it in ruins. Robotnik attacked Chaos in the Egg Carrier 2 but the attack had no effect, and with one blast, Perfect Chaos managed to destroy Robotnik's ship. The doctor was sent hurtling off into the clouds screaming, only turning up again just in time to witness Sonic's victory against Chaos, granting him silent acknowledgment before flying away in his Egg Mobile.
Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure
In Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure, Dr. Eggman returned to kidnapping Animals to use as Badnik power sources, which prompted Sonic to go after the doctor to stop him.

While pursued by Sonic, Eggman confronted the hedgehog many times. Each time though, Eggman was beaten and forced to flee. Eventually though, Eggman ambushed Sonic and Knuckles after Sonic defeated Knuckles in battle and took his Chaos Emerald. Stealing the Emerald, Eggman left his enemies to get buried in the collapsing cave they were in and fled to a secret base. When Sonic later caught up to him, Eggman used a trap door he had set up that dropped Sonic deeper into his base. However, Sonic soon caught up to Eggman, much to the scientist's surprise, who tried disposing of Sonic with a new weapon. When this failed, Eggman fled to the Last Utopia Zone where he used a mech powered by his Chaos Emerald to confront Sonic. However, Sonic quickly defeated the mech and took back the Emerald, forcing Eggman to flee into space. There, Eggman armed himself with his final mech when Super Sonic came after him. Upon his mech's defeat, Eggman's Egg Mobile was dealt a crippling blow by Sonic, leaving Eggman to plummet down to earth.
Sonic Shuffle
In Sonic Shuffle, Dr. Eggman learned about the power of the Precioustone and followed Sonic and his friends into Maginaryworld in hopes of stealing the powerful gem.[7] Although he would confront Sonic and his party on several occasions, his plan ultimately ended up being thwarted.
Sonic Adventure 2
In Sonic Adventure 2, Dr. Eggman discovered the existence of Project Shadow by accidentally coming across the long-forgotten diary of his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik. In the diary, the professor spoke of a classified military research project that was shut down because the United Federation government feared its misuse. When he accidentally found his grandfather's diary, Eager to see just what his childhood hero had produced, Eggman found that the weapon was stored away on Prison Island, a military compound controlled by G.U.N. He was unaware that he was drawn into an adventure that would show him that his grandfather was perhaps not as innocent as he had thought.

Dr. Eggman attacked Prison Island and broke into the underground base with his new Eggwalker. Happening upon the cryogenic vault where Prof. Gerald's weapon was sealed, Eggman used his grandfather's password: MARIA, the name of Gerald's granddaughter and Eggman's late cousin, then inserted a Chaos Emerald into the control console (where he got the Emerald is unknown). The vault opened, releasing the ultimate life-form: Shadow the Hedgehog.
Eggman mistook Shadow for Sonic at first glance, but Shadow, in gratitude for being released, offered to grant Eggman one wish. Their meeting was interrupted by one of G.U.N.'s Big Foot mechas, which Shadow quickly engaged and easily destroyed. Shadow then fled Prison Island, telling Eggman to bring him more Chaos Emeralds and that he would be waiting aboard the Space Colony ARK.
Eggman headed back to his pyramid base and encountered Rouge the Bat and Knuckles the Echidna along the way, who were fighting over the Master Emerald. Eggman attempted to steal it, but Knuckles shattered it to pieces to prevent its theft. Not really needing the Master Emerald at that time, Eggman returned to his base and caught up on the news. A newsflash announcing the theft of a Chaos Emerald from Central City's federal reserve bank caught the doctor's attention, and although the media and public had identified the suspect as Sonic, Eggman knew it could only be Shadow.
Using his base's space transporter, Dr. Eggman beamed himself to the Space Colony ARK to meet with Shadow. There, Shadow revealed the Eclipse Cannon, a weapon of mass destruction capable of destroying a planet or piercing a star. The cannon required the seven Chaos Emeralds to meet its immense power demands, and two had already been installed. Rouge the Bat - who had boarded the ARK by sneaking into Eggman's pyramid and accessing his transporter - had provided a third emerald for the Eclipse Cannon. Although Eggman was suspicious of her motives, she had provided another emerald and was offering to help him obtain the others. Eggman agreed to let Rouge join him and Shadow in their hunt.
Three more Chaos Emeralds were discovered on Prison Island, locked away in G.U.N.'s high-security vault. Dr. Eggman organized a strategy that would allow him and his cohorts to obtain them. His part in the plan was to divert G.U.N.'s forces so that Rouge could enter the vaults unnoticed and Shadow could plant high explosives in the armory. When the trio made their move, they were interrupted by the untimely arrival of Amy Rose, who had mistaken Shadow for Sonic. Eggman moved in to try and deal with Amy but was stopped by Tails and his new Cyclone walker. Running on a strict timetable, Eggman let Tails and Amy leave alive and made his escape, although not before making clear that the next time they encounter each other, he will make sure to take them out.
He then reported in after Shadow set the explosives and informed them that, thanks to an unexpected delay on Eggman's end, they have no other option but to set the detonation timer to five minutes to make up for the wasted time, with Rouge remarking that five minutes was all she needed to recover the Chaos Emeralds stored in the vault. He also informed Rouge to make sure she gets the emeralds before GUN found her. Eventually, after Shadow took longer than expected to evacuate, Eggman called in and demanded that Shadow escape immediately and hurriedly before he is caught in the destruction of the island. As Shadow had fought Sonic (who had just escaped from his cell) to a stalemate when Eggman called in, this consequentially resulted in Sonic learning of the island's impending doom and inadvertently saved him. The mission was a success despite certain delays, including Shadow having to save Rouge via Chaos Control when she was pinned down at the vault, and the group succeeded in stealing the Chaos Emeralds and destroying the G.U.N. base. With six Chaos Emeralds now powering the Eclipse Cannon, Dr. Eggman announced to the world that the Eggman Empire would arise and dominate the Earth. To prove his power, Eggman pointed the Eclipse Cannon at the moon and fired, blowing it in half. Eggman then delivered his ultimatum to the President of the United Federation: the UF had 24 hours to surrender or Eggman would destroy the entire country. While delivering his ultimatum, Sonic intervened and discovered where Eggman was hiding, forcing Eggman to withdraw his ultimatum. In addition, because the Eclipse Cannon was not fully charged with all seven Chaos Emeralds, he also was unable to make due with his threat due to it requiring a recharge time of several hours, although after Rouge the Bat revealed a hint to where the final Chaos Emerald was located (specifically, a newspaper article revealing that Tails was awarded a Chaos Emerald for saving Station Square), he then had Rouge track down Tails, and after sighting his plane telling Shadow to pursue them. Although Shadow ultimately wasn't able to stop them, Eggman was undeterred, as he already had anticipated the possibility of their arrival and made arrangements for it.
When Sonic and his friends attacked Dr. Eggman's pyramid, the doctor unleashed his mighty Egg Golem robot to destroy Sonic. A battle ensued and Sonic damaged a restraining mechanism on the giant's head, causing it to malfunction and attack Eggman. Eggman was forced to defend himself and destroy the Egg Golem, giving Sonic's gang the time they needed to hijack the doctor's space shuttle. Eggman then gave a status report to Rouge about how they've escaped, and also ended up giving her the password for the computer files and the Eclipse Cannon (which was MARIA, just like the password for Shadow's capsule). Eggman later returned to the ARK after detecting two Chaos Emerald signatures, deducing that Sonic must have a decoy as well as the real one, also ordering Shadow to stand down as he intended to deal with them personally. When he returned to the colony, Eggman took Amy hostage and held her at gunpoint, demanding that Sonic and Tails meet him in the ARK's main laboratory. He then presumably either ambushed Tails or hijacked his communication lines and told him to tell Sonic that Amy is being held hostage. When they arrived, Eggman ordered Sonic to place the Chaos Emerald in the center of the room. Believing it to be the fake emerald (a belief that was also unwittingly confirmed by Tails when asking him how he deduced it), Eggman then sprung his trap and sealed Sonic inside a containment capsule. The capsule was ejected into space where it exploded, seemingly killing Sonic instantly.
With his arch-rival out of the way, Eggman turned his attention to Tails and the two battled each other in their walkers. Eggman somehow managed to come out of the fight with the real Chaos Emerald and installed it into the Eclipse Cannon, although he later reported to Shadow that someone (Sonic) was making his way to the Eclipse cannon. As he laughed in triumph, danger signs appeared on every monitor on the colony, followed by an image of the late Gerald Robotnik. A message left behind by the professor stated that the world had sentenced him to death, and that he would have his revenge by destroying the Earth. A program within the colony's main computer had been activated which would destabilize the ARK's orbit and send it crashing into the planet, wiping out all life.
Eggman convened with the heroes (and was visibly annoyed to see that Sonic was still alive) and showed them Gerald's diary. He then informed them that the Eclipse Cannon's core had overloaded with Chaos energy and the collision would obliterate the entire planet. The doctor was the one who suggested that they all work together to try and neutralize the Chaos Emeralds and stop the ARK's collision. Of course, this was no doubt due to the fact that Eggman couldn't take over the world if there's no world. With Eggman monitoring the ARK's layout and guiding the others down their respective paths, he, Sonic and the others managed to stop the ARK and save the world from certain doom. He later informed them about the Biolizard's survival and merging with the space colony after their initial plan of having the Master Emerald neutralize the Chaos Emeralds failed.
Sonic Advance series
Sonic Advance

Dr. Eggman, still determined to create his Eggman Empire, proceeded to utilize Roboticization of the various animals, as well as hunt down the Chaos Emeralds. He ended up meeting resistance from Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. He fought them several times with various mechs (and in one case, indirectly fought against them), until they eventually reached his headquarters, XX, located in space. He then utilized two of his old mechs against them as well as a new mech. However, he was defeated. He eventually confronted Super Sonic on the moon, but ended up defeated.
Sonic Advance 2
Not one to give up, Dr. Eggman proceeded to continue with his goals of creating the Eggman Empire. In addition, he also managed to abduct Tails as well as a youngster named Cream, and also manipulated Knuckles into fighting Sonic, even supplying him with the Egg Saucer. However, Sonic managed to rescue them (and in Knuckles' case, put some sense into him), and eventually confronted Eggman at Area XX, alongside copies of the various mechs he used before. Despite the destruction of Area XX, Dr. Eggman did not give up. He then proceeded to use a mech to abduct several Flickies as well as Cream's mom, Vanilla, right in front of them. However, Sonic managed to transform into Super Sonic and defeat Eggman, also rescuing Vanilla.
Sonic Advance 3

Ultimately, Dr. Eggman managed to find the Chaos Emeralds and use them and Chaos Control to rip the earth apart, separating Sonic from his friends in the process. He also developed several doomsday devices, including G-merl, a robot modeled after the deceased Gizoid Emerl. Sonic eventually managed to beat Eggman, however, and to make matters worse for them, G-merl betrays Eggman and steals the Chaos Emeralds, forcing Eggman to team up with Super Sonic to stop G-merl.
Sonic Pinball Party
In Sonic Pinball Party, right after having his latest attempt to conquer the world foiled by Sonic, Eggman went back to his old tricks by kidnapping the Animals coming to Casinopolis and turning them into badniks. In the meantime, Eggman would organize the Egg Cup Tournament and brainwash Tails and Amy into serving him.
Eventually, Sonic took part in the Egg Cup Tournament in order to foil Eggman's scheme. Along the way, Sonic saved his brainwashed friends, who had joined the tournament to stop him. When Sonic won the tournament however, Eggman appeared and challenged Sonic to an additional match. At the end though, Eggman was defeated by Sonic, who liberated Eggman's prisoners.
Sonic Battle

Having used research notes made by Gerald Robotnik, he managed to locate a doomsday weapon known as a Gizoid. However, he eventually discarded it when it seemed to be useless. He later discovered that the Gizoid can only be activated by Chaos Emeralds and tried to get it back. Eventually, he managed to make copies of the Gizoid, rechristened Emerl. He eventually unveils his Death Egg, and uses its cannon to destroy a star. However, he becomes horrified when he learned that Emerl, due to his learning abilities, not only managed to learn the Death Egg's cannon at sight, but also aim the weapon directly at the Earth. He later witnessed Sonic being forced to kill Emerl.
Sonic Heroes

In Sonic Heroes, Dr. Eggman constructs a massive fleet of battleships called the Egg Fleet, and at the heart of this fleet is a flagship even larger than the Egg Carrier. He planned to use this fleet to conquer the world in 3 days, but was locked away in his own flagship by Metal Sonic, who impersonated him and took command of his fleet. Dr. Eggman then enlisted the assistance of Team Chaotix in order to break free, communicating to them by walkie-talkie, giving them their objective for the respective level. However, he once nearly gave away his true identity when Vector, in reference to Metal Sonic disguised as Dr. Eggman, referred to him as a "mustachioed moron." By the time he was freed, Metal Sonic had transformed into Metal Madness. Dr. Eggman assessed that they would need the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds to defeat him (which Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Rose, and Team Chaotix coincidentally had possession of). After Metal Sonic was defeated, Dr. Eggman tried to sneak away from the Chaotix without paying and was seen being chased by them. It is unknown if they got their money or not.
Sonic Jump series
Sonic Jump (2005)
In Sonic Jump, Dr. Eggman had invented the "Brainwash Beam", a device that would allow him to take control of the minds of others. Building it on a space station so it would able to affect the whole world, all Eggman needed was the energy of the seven Chaos Emeralds to power it. While tracking down the Emeralds however, Eggman went after Tails when the fox cub caught wind of his activities. Kidnapping Tails right before Sonic's eyes, Eggman got onboard a helicopter with Tails and traveled to his flying fortress where he imprisoned Tails. Sonic soon after came to Tails' rescue though. Making his escape, Eggman warned Sonic that he had obtained six of the Chaos Emeralds, and that there was only one left to find.
Eggman subsequently traveled to Angel Island to get the last Chaos Emerald from Knuckles. While demanding the Emerald from the echidna however, Eggman would snatch it when Knuckles got distracted by Sonic and Tails' arrival. Eggman then gloated about his plan to the heroes before making his escape to South America, where he had a space station with a rocket that could take him to his Brainwash Beam in space. Although Sonic and co. were hot on his tail, Eggman managed to leave in his rocket before they caught him. Unfortunately for Eggman, Sonic would follow him into space and destroy the space station hosting the Brainwash Beam, which also scattered the Chaos Emeralds across Earth. Despite this, Eggman managed to get a hold of one of the Emeralds and hide out in space. However, Sonic soon tracked Eggman down and claimed his Emerald after defeating Eggman in his latest mech. In the aftermath, Eggman disappeared, although not before swearing revenge.
Sonic Jump (2012)
In Sonic Jump (2012), Dr. Eggman went back to his old ways by personally kidnapping Animals with his Egg Mobile and taking them high into the sky. However, his operations were soon discovered by Sonic and co. As such, while traveling the Zones, Eggman would repeatedly get cornered by the heroes and be defeated by them. Each time however, Eggman managed to escape to the next Zone, although not before capturing more Animals. Eventually though, after being defeated in Mechanical Zone, Eggman tried fleeing into space, only for his Egg Mobile to give out. Crash-landing on Earth, Eggman begrudgingly abandoned his wrecked Egg Mobile and his plans.
Shadow the Hedgehog
During Black Doom's invasion of Earth, Eggman initially observed the fighting taking place between the aliens and G.U.N. Realizing that the conflict would surely result in total destruction and thus leave nothing left for Eggman to conquer, the doctor mobilized his army and launched his fleet to destroy the Black Arms. Eggman found himself under attack from all sides; G.U.N., the Black Arms and Sonic and his friends were all interfering with his operations amongst fighting each other as well.
Eggman saw a potential trump card in Shadow and hoped to manipulate the amnesiac hedgehog into assisting him. Ultimately, the doctor's plan failed, and he was forced to confront Shadow himself. He attempted to further confuse Shadow by telling him that he had no past and that he was one of the doctor's new line of combat androids built in the original Shadow's image. He later attempted to convince Shadow not to supply the Chaos Emeralds to Black Doom, alongside Knuckles, Sonic, Rouge, Tails, and Amy, although he ultimately failed, and was left to be consumed by the Death Leeches after inhaling specialized gasses that were emitted by the Black Comet when it was warped to Earth, although he and the others later escaped as Shadow confronted Black Doom's true form Devil Doom. He also heard Gerald's final message to Shadow regarding the imminent invasion of the Black Arms fifty years later, and deduced that his grandfather's plan involved the Eclipse Cannon. It was only after Shadow had learned the truth about his past from Black Doom that Eggman admitted that he was lying; he had, in fact, recovered Shadow after Sonic Adventure 2 and had kept him alive as a test subject. In the end, Eggman was chased by an irritated Knuckles, who thinks that he is going to steal the Chaos Emeralds again.

In Sonic Rush, Eggman joins forces with his doppelganger, Eggman Nega, to steal all of the Sol Emeralds and Chaos Emeralds to form a world called Eggmanland. Unfortunately for them, Nega's nemesis, Blaze, came from Blaze's world and teamed up with Sonic the Hedgehog to beat them.
Sonic Rush Adventure
Eggman and the Egg Wizard
In Sonic Rush Adventure, Eggman joins forces with Eggman Nega once again, this time they make a crew of robotic pirates that stole Blaze's Jeweled Scepter along with the Chaos Emeralds and the Sol Emeralds, to form the Eggmanland again. However, the pirates were defeated by Sonic and Blaze and they reclaim the Jeweled Scepter. Although, it didn't take long for both doctors to steal the Scepter again and use it to power up their Egg Wizard. They attempted to use it to unlock the "Power of the Stars", but the duo was defeated by Super Sonic and Burning Blaze. Although their mech, the Egg Wizard, was completely destroyed, Eggman was able to escape as usual.
Sonic Riders series
Sonic Riders
Eggman announces the start of the EX World Grand Prix.
In Sonic Riders, Dr. Eggman opens a stadium called the "EX World Grand Prix" in which Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose and the Babylon Rogues compete against each other. Whoever wins will get Chaos Emeralds, and to enter, that will cost one Chaos Emerald.
To get the Babylon Rogues to the race, Eggman had to hire them, he also told them that if they win, they will get a chance to get all seven Chaos Emeralds, since Jet wanted to awaken Babylon Garden with the power of all seven Chaos Emeralds they has accepted it. When Jet won against Sonic by cheating, Jet was able to use all of the Chaos Emeralds' power so that the Control Box can awaken Babylon. But apparently after awakening Babylon Eggman stole the Control Box for his own purpose. Thanks to Sonic, Eggman was defeated.
When the Babylon Rogues reached a secret area, by using the Control Box, Eggman claims that he was after the treasure all along. When Sonic and Jet open the treasure box, Eggman begs them to hand over the treasure, Sonic and Jet cleverly grin at each other and gave him the treasure, which was a magic carpet, Eggman was disappointed since he thought that the treasure was not valuable, so he passes out. He can be unlocked to play as by completing the Babylon story line.
Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity
Sonic and Jet reclaim the Ark of the Cosmos stolen by Eggman.
In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Eggman uses robots from MeteorTech to collect the Ark of the Cosmos, something which Jet was after. But unfortunately for Eggman, the robots actually have their own program, to go amok after the Ark of the Cosmos. Sonic and Jet find Eggman guilty but Eggman claims that their craze after the Ark of the Cosmos is not his fault. In the end of the game, when Eggman finds out that the world is doomed because of Master Core: ABIS, a formation of MeteoTech, Eggman says "The world is doomed!" and escapes.
Sonic Free Riders

In Sonic Free Riders, Dr. Eggman held another World Grand Prix and would award the winner with large amounts of cash and treasure. Besides Team Heroes and Babylon Rogues, Team Dark and Team Rose also participated in the event. In attempt to disguise himself, he is dressed like a king and calls himself "King Doc of Toreggmania").
After what seemed to be the race finals of the World Grand Prix, Eggman announced there would be more final races for the contenders to participate and has constructed the "Ultimate Gear-jockey" (E-10000B) to participate. After the race, he decided to drop the disguise, he reveals that his robot has been copying everyone's racing data to make himself the fastest Extreme Gear racer. But the data turns out be useless as it was revealed that Metal Sonic has stolen the data for himself and gave Eggman false data, much to to the doctor's anger. After witnessing Sonic racing against Metal Sonic, Eggman berated at Metal Sonic for ruining the World Grand Prix and proceeded to leave, and it was revealed that Eggman did not actually have any prizes to award anyone with.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

Doctor Eggman appears in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) as the main antagonist of Sonic's story, a minor villain in Shadow's story, and a major villain in Silver's story. Here, Eggman has been redesigned with a more realistic appearance. The comical side of his personality is also subdued a bit to bring out his more villainous side. In this game, Eggman invades Soleanna and attempts to kidnap Princess Elise during the Festival of the Sun's opening ceremony in order to release the Flames of Disaster (aka Iblis), since Iblis was sealed away inside Elise's soul. He intends to use the Flames of Disaster in order to rule over time. During Sonic's story he repeatedly captures Elise, only to have her rescued by Sonic. At the end of Sonic's story, when the Egg Carrier is beginning to crash, he battles Sonic in the Egg Wyvern. Sonic defeats Eggman, causing him to go flying off into the sky as the ship crashes.

In Shadow's story, Eggman serves both as a villain and an ally. Before the events of the game, he had somehow gotten a hold of the Scepter of Darkness which contained Mephiles the Dark. Rouge the Bat had stolen it from him and Shadow was sent to rescue her. Eggman followed them to Kingdom Valley, demanding them to return the scepter, which ended in a struggle that caused the scepter to shatter. Eggman was forced to retreat, although most of his robots, due to electromagnetic pulses from the remains of the scepter, were unable to escape despite his ordering for them to retreat, and were eventually knocked down by Mephiles' spirit shortly before the latter possessed Shadow's shadow. He later appears when Shadow breaks into his personal train in order to learn the truth of the Solaris Project. Eggman makes a deal with Shadow that he will tell him about the project if he captures Mephiles and brings him to him.
Though he only physically appeared twice in Silver's story, Eggman was a key villain as his actions, as suspected by Silver, would've have ultimately unleash Iblis, thus turning the world and its future into an apocalyptic state. Ironically, both times he appeared had him abducting Elise and escaping before Silver ended up killing Sonic, thus ensuring that Iblis did not end up released via Elise shedding tears.

Eggman does not appear again until the final story, where he and the rest of Sonic's friends (and Elise) have been sucked into the space rift that was created during the birth of Solaris, and states that Solaris can't be defeated since it exists in the past, present and future. Upon discovering that Sonic could be brought back to life with the power of the Chaos Emeralds, he aids the others by locating the Emeralds using a radar inside his glasses.
In this game, it seems that Sonic and Eggman, despite being bitter enemies, share a mutual respect for each other as when Eggman presumably perishes in the crash and explosion of his Egg Carrier with Elise, Sonic travels back in time to not only save Elise before the crash, but allow Eggman a chance to escape his doomed vessel as well when he battles Sonic in the Egg Wyvern. When Sonic is presumed dead by everyone after being impaled by Mephiles, even Eggman shows some remorse and grief over his arch-enemy's death and hence why he lends his support to locate the Chaos Emeralds to revive him.
Sonic Rivals series
Sonic Rivals
Doctor Eggman appeared in Sonic Rivals released for the PSP who actually played a heroic role in contrast to his evil deeds in almost every other occasion. Throughout the game, it was revealed that Eggman Nega (as Dr. Eggman's descendant) masqueraded as the doctor himself and captured the real Doctor Eggman into a card by Nega's special camera. By the aid of Shadow and a new hedgehog character, Silver, the doctor was rescued and helped to escort the two hedgehogs to Eggman Nega's base at outer space in order to stop the mad scientist from turning the entire world into a card.
Sonic Rivals 2
In Sonic Rivals 2, he made Shadow and Metal Sonic team up for his attendances. In the game, Eggman seemed to know something about Ifrit and tells Shadow that the Ifrit may destroy the world by eating Chao. As Shadow is aware of it, he tries not to tell anyone about it.
Sonic and Tails find one of Eggman's pages on Ifrit and shows the pages to Eggman to explain, Eggman who was shocked to see how did they find these pages, fails to explain and runs off.
Sonic Unleashed

Eggman is the main antagonist in Sonic Unleashed. Eggman uses the power of Super Sonic to break the planet into pieces and awaken Dark Gaia and use its power to create Eggmanland. He also accidentally turns Sonic into a werehog by awakening Dark Gaia too early, but he quickly sent him falling down to the Earth with the drained Chaos Emeralds. This proved to be a fatal mistake when Sonic survived and restored the Emeralds' power to bring the pieces of the planet back together and beat his Egg Beetle, Egg Devil Ray and the Egg Lancer. However, the doctor managed to gather Dark Gaia's power before Sonic brought every piece of the world back together, and used it to power the Egg Dragoon and attack Sonic. Even when powered by Dark Gaia, Sonic proved victorious and defeated Eggman. However, Dark Gaia then formed in front of them, and Eggman ordered it to attack Sonic. However, in a similar fashion to Chaos, Dark Gaia sent Dr. Eggman flying before fighting Sonic and Gaia Colossus. Sonic Unleashed marks the first time that Dr. Eggman actually realized Eggmanland, but later got destroyed by Sonic. Eggman himself survived Dark Gaia's attack and chased his sneering robot assistant Orbot into the sunrise.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4
Dr. Eggman appeared in the episodic Sonic the Hedgehog 4, having survived the loss of the Master Emerald. In Episode I, he merely captured forest animals to power his Badniks and redesigned selected inventions to be trickier than ever for Sonic to handle. His master plan comes together a few months later in Episode II - he resurrected Metal Sonic, who was defeated during the events of Sonic the Hedgehog CD and once again set his eyes on the mystical Little Planet as it makes its annual return to Earth. Sonic hears that Eggman is back, and reunites with Tails to stop him together. Meanwhile, Metal Sonic searches for the heroes and sees them fly away in the Tornado and follows them using Tails' rocket. Towards the end of the game, Sonic and Tails find that the Little Planet has sustained in a remarkable sphere known as the Death Egg mk.II Zone. Fortunately, Sonic and Tails once again beat Metal Sonic at his own game, and the heart of the base was destroyed, deactivating the space station as it harmlessly floats in space.
Sonic Colors

Dr. Eggman appears once again as the main villain of Sonic Colors. In the game he creates Dr. Eggman's Incredible Interstellar Amusement Park, which is an amusement park that has five planets chained together to the main park. He had announced that he made the park for people to enjoy and to show a remorse of his past deeds. Sonic, however, doesn't believe this, and goes to the amusement park. Sonic is right, Dr. Eggman is up to an evil scheme. He is capturing Wisps so that he can take their Hyper-go-on energy, and turn it into negative energy that powers a Mind Control Ray in order to take over the universe.
Eggman pretends that he has he has turned over a new leaf, but that couldn't fool Sonic one bit. He send out many robots to destroy Sonic, but in the end they just get trashed by the hedgehog. He has used 5 generators to link all planets together; however, that was the only thing Sonic knew, so he thought that releasing all of the chained planets would end Eggman's scheme. When Eggman tries to fire the cannon, the energy backfires due to Rotatatron's robotic arm, which was stuck inside cannon. Eggman challenged Sonic to beat him as he was using the negative hyper-go-on energy to power a giant robot called the Nega-Wisp Armor. Sonic manages to beat him and Eggman ends up getting sucked into the black hole created when the negative energy backfired.
After the credits, Eggman had survived the black hole and is seen helplessly stranded in space with Orbot and Cubot, Cubot was celebrating that he got his voice back and kept on talking. Eggman wished for a moment of silence, but Cubot would not stop talking.
Sonic Generations

In a surprise twist, Dr. Eggman of the present, named Modern Eggman, and his past self from another dimension, named Classic Eggman, are the main antagonists in Sonic Generations. After the events of Sonic Colors, Eggman found a strange creation in space that could erase time and space, and decided to use it to erase his past defeats. He left Orbot and Cubot stranded in space and went with the creation to travel in time. However, he needed another genius to control this creation and, during the game's story, he rescue Classic Eggman after the Death Egg battle. Later, Modern Eggman tried to destroy Sonic himself using a new Egg Dragoon prototype in the Sonic Unleashed timeline, but he failed and got away using the creation.
At the beginning of the game, this creation, named Time Eater, travels to Green Hill, causing a white fade while Classic Sonic looks on in wonder. Then Time Eater travels to the present to ruin Modern Sonic's birthday party by kidnapping all of Sonic's friends and sending them to different Time Holes to bait his traps. Sonic could not stop him and finds himself in the White Space
Near the end of the game, both Sonics and both Tails find out about the Time Eater's true origin when the doctors reveal themselves and their plan, intending to dispose both Modern Sonic and Classic from time (although Classic Eggman ended up disturbed that he might become crazy when witnessing Modern Eggman breaking down into hysterical laughter). Early in the battle both Sonics are unable to stop the doctors' creation, but after transforming into Super Sonics and enduring the intense battle, both doctors are defeated once again and all the characters return to their world and time.
After the end credits it is shown that both Eggman got stuck in white limbo and are unable to get out. After arguing whether or not they would ever win, Classic Eggman thought that maybe he would instead pursue his "teaching degree" after these events, to which Modern Eggman agreed as he enjoyed telling people what to do (although Classic Eggman is seen clutching his forehead and shaking his head as Modern Eggman says this).
Sonic Lost World

Dr. Eggman appears in Sonic Lost World first as the main antagonist, then as a deuteragonist and finally winds up reclaiming his role as main antagonist. Eggman is first seen carrying an animal capsule while being pursued Sonic and Tails on their Tornado. After distracting the brotherly duo by cruelly dropping the capsule, Eggman shoots down the Tornado with a ray gun. By the time Sonic and Tails confront Eggman again, they discover that he, at some point, had discovered a group of six menacing Zeti known as the Deadly Six, and that he had decided to use them in an attempt to rule the world. During that time, he also proceeded to hone their abilities and provided them with the most powerful mechs he could create, and presumably also attempted to buy their loyalty by preparing them a giant sandwich.
Unfortunately for the doctor, Sonic knocks away the Cacophonic Conch that Eggman was using to control the villains while at Desert Ruins; as a result, the Deadly Six rise up against their master, taking control of his badniks in the process and decide to destroy the world themselves with the Extractor, a device Eggman had built for the purpose of absorbing the planet's energy so as to put it towards his plans for world domination. After the attack, Eggman blames Sonic for the betrayal of the Deadly Six, but soon decides to join forces with Sonic, who reluctantly agreed to since the world was in danger. During the time that Eggman was allied with Sonic, he frequently got into arguments with Tails, who - in contrast to his demeanor towards the doctor in Sonic Colors - does not trust him. In spite of this, Eggman winds up saving Tails' life at one point when Cubot - then fused with one of the Deadly Six's badniks - attacked him.
Eggman beginning to notice that something wrong has happened to his mustache.
When Sonic, Eggman, Orbot and Cubot arrive at Lava Mountain, Zomom and Zazz start attacking them with large rocks, destroying the bridge the heroes were on and seemingly forcing Eggman to sacrifice his life to save his arch-nemesis. However, after Sonic defeats the Deadly Six, Eggman reveals that he had survived his fall by utilizing a jetpack and had spent the time that Sonic was fighting the Deadly Six to build a mech powered by the energy the Extractor had absorbed. Even with his mech's enormous powers, however, Eggman is soundly defeated by Sonic while Tails manages to restore the planet's energy. Eggman tries to flee using the jetpack he had used earlier, but Sonic had removed one of its exhaust pipes while Eggman was unconscious, sending the doctor plummeting back to Earth. However, Eggman had actually survived his fall but got stuck in a patch of soft dirt: Orbot and Cubot - now fused into one body - manage to rescue the doctor, but not before a rabbit eats half of his mustache: the duo mention this by mistake and soon flee from a very angry Eggman.
Sonic Runners series
Sonic Runners

In Sonic Runners, Dr. Eggman returned once more to conquer the world. To this end, he spent the next period attempting several malicious plots to his benefit with the aid of his lackeys, such as kidnaping Animals to use as power sources, hunting Wisps on Earth to harness their Hyper-go-on, harassing Chao with his construction efforts, building new and improved Badnik armies, and attempting to procure the Master Emerald. Every step of the way however, his plans got foiled by Team Sonic.
For his final scheme, Eggman revised one of his old plans by building another Brainwashing Laser to control the world with, except this time it would be powered by the Chaos Emeralds. Although Team Sonic kept interfering with his operations, Eggman was succesful in extracting all the chaos energy from the Emeralds for his laser. When it came to the final showdown with Team Sonic, Eggman tried using his Brainwashing Laser on Sonic after the doctor was defeated by him. However, the Chaos Emeralds that Sonic held absorbed the energy from the laser and transformed Sonic into Super Sonic. As Super Sonic destroyed his laser, Eggman snuck away to plot his next scheme.
Sonic Runners Adventures
In Sonic Runners Adventure, Dr. Eggman began another attempt to brainwash the world into serving him. For this scheme, Eggman build another mind control cannon, one powered by the latent energies in Sky Sanctuary and a new Extractor.
Arriving on South Island, Eggman captured Tails using his mind control ray and forced hin to build him a robot teleporter. While Eggman built up his Badnik army however, Sonic would arrive and free Tails before confronting Eggman. Forced to retreat by the blue hedgehog, Eggman fled to Desert Ruins through Tails' teleporter. After Tails then made a mess of Eggman forces and defeated him in battle, Eggman fled to Lava Mountain. There, Knuckles shut down Eggman's Extractor despite Eggman's attempts to stop him. Fleeting to Sky Sanctuary after that to salvage what remained of his plans, Eggman managed to escape Sonic by using his mind control ray on him. However, Team Sonic destroyed Eggman's mind control cannon not long after. Eggman was then dealt another defeat by Sonic. Making another escape, Eggman promised the heroes revenge.
Sonic Forces
In Sonic Forces, months before making any moves, Dr. Eggman discovered the Phantom Ruby outside his lair. Upon picking it up, the gem gave him a vision of Eggmanland, only for the vision to evaporate when he dropped the gem in shock. Nonetheless, he realized that the visions might prove useful and proceeded to research the powerful gem. Shortly after formally giving the ruby its name, however, he had to deal with Jackal Squad invading his turf. Since Eggman had spent his time researching the gem rather than maintaining his defensive measures, his outrage caused the Phantom Ruby to materialize several Egg Pawns that held off Jackal Squad. However, he nearly ended up killed by their leader. The leader's sword, however, hit the gem and caused a vision of a desolate wasteland to appear, stunning the leader long enough for Eggman to knock him away. Impressed by his abilities and his vision, Eggman extended a request for an alliance, which the mercenary leader obliged.[8] He later tested the Phantom Ruby's powers on Angel Island, sending Knuckles the Echidna and Silver the Hedgehog on a small trip through space-time. After Knuckles and Silver unknowingly reverted the Phantom Ruby's effects, Eggman watched them take off and was delighted that the test was a success. With this, he was ready to enact his plan.[9]
Because of how important the Phantom Ruby was to his plans, Egman had the lab researching it at Mystic Jungle guarded by the Jackal Squad. However, the squad fell to Shadow the Hedgehog, with Eggman eventually dispatching their leader. The leader proved to be no match for Shadow, which, thanks to Shadow's bluntly telling him that he was weak, prompted him to undergo fusion with the final prototype to the Phantom Ruby. Eggman had his own personal motives for approving of the leader, rechristened Infinite, undergoing the procedure: In particular, he wanted to create an "invincible weapon of destruction" to use on Sonic when the time came.
Later on, Eggman's base was infiltrated by E-123 Omega. To deal with the traitorous robot, Eggman dispatched Infinite as a test of his new abilities.[10]
Eventually, Dr. Eggman invaded the City with his army, only for Sonic to arrive. Eggman, however, had anticipated his arrival this time, and unveiled Infinite as well as what appeared to be Zavok, Shadow, Chaos, and Metal Sonic accompanying him. Though Sonic tried his best, he got defeated by Infinite with help the of Sonic's old foes. With Sonic defeated, Eggman managed to conquer 99% of the world over the next six months. It was during this war that a tag-team called the Resistance was formed to fight back against Eggman's Empire.
At some point during his conquest, Eggman invaded a village with robots deployed from his battleship. However, the battleship's launch bay got hit with a missile, preventing any more robots from functioning. Due to this, Eggman retreated, but swore revenge.[11]
Eggman later appeared in Green Hill to converse with Infinite about the Phantom Ruby prototypes while disposing of them, but was spied by Tails and Classic Sonic. He then grew angry at Infinite for not killing Sonic at Mystic Jungle, but nonetheless reviewed with him the final stages of his plan to wipe out the Resistance. Shortly after Infinite took his leave, however, Eggman was attacked by Classic Sonic. Although Eggman initially attempted to disengage from fighting Classic Sonic, he ultimately fought him with his various mechs before being beaten. Already confident in his impending victory against the Resistance, he took the loss in stride, and even proceeded to gloat to Tails and Classic Sonic that his plan to wipe them out would be accomplished in three days time before taking his leave.
Escalating his plans, Eggman redoubled his attacks, sending out a Shadow replica to lead an army of Death Egg Sentinels to attack the City. While Sonic and Shadow drove back the attacks and defeated the Shadow replica, Eggman began shifting his forces to the Imperial Tower in preparation for his final plan to wipe out the resistance and remake the world in his image. This left his home city, Metropolis, undermanned, something that Knuckles decided to take advantage of by staging a full, frontal assault. Eggman, while surprised by the resistance's boldness, instructed Infinite to make use of his iconic weapon, which forces the Resistance to make a hasty retreat. Despite their losses, the Resistance managed to uncover the true nature of the Phantom Ruby, began reclaiming portions of the world, destroying a Metal Sonic replica and the Death Crab in the process, and blew up the Death Egg, which also served as a energy source for the Phantom Ruby.
Infuriated by the Resistance's resolve, Eggman and Infinite made a 'tactical retreat' until their plan could finally be implemented. Locating Eggman later on, Sonic was prepared to capture his hated enemy until the villain revealed one of his trump cards by instructing Infinite to conjure up a portal into Null Space, which absorbed both Sonic and the Avatar after the former attempted to save Sonic. Tails voiced his shock at the Phantom Ruby's continued power despite the Death Egg's destruction. In response, Eggman revealed that he had a backup power-source hidden beneath Metropolis. Eggman would later be shocked to see Sonic and the Avatar having escaped from Null Space unscathed. Infuriated, Eggman finally implemented his final plan at the Imperial Tower.
When the entire Resistance arrived at the Imperial Tower for the final battle, Eggman had Infinite conjure up hundreds of replicas of Chaos, Shadow, Metal Sonic, and Zavok to battle the resistance. Despite Omega showing up to give aid to the Resistance, Infinite projected a second sun in the sky, which began a collision course with the planet. Eggman revealed his intentions to use this sun to completely destroy the resistance and burn the world to ashes, so that his empire would rise throughout the entire globe.
While victory seemed ensured for the Eggman Empire, the Avatar used a Phantom Ruby prototype Infinite failed to dispose of and cancelled out the projection of the sun. Expressing disbelief that his plans were once again ruined, Eggman had his fleet, army, and Infinite launch a defensive attack. Sonic and the Avatar cornered Infinite and, with their combined powers, finally defeated the villain. Pleading that he still could fight, Infinite finally disappeared, his essence incorporated into the original Phantom Ruby.
Eggman arrived and expressed his admiration for Sonic 's ability to always impress him. Revealing that he had one final play in hand, Eggman retreated while Classic Sonic located the entrance to the villain's underground lair, where the backup generator for the Phantom Ruby resided, which Modern Sonic and the Avatar subsequently destroyed.
While Sonic believed that they had finally won, Eggman reappeared within his final trump card, a Death Egg Robot with the original Phantom Ruby incorporated into it. Proclaiming himself as Infinite's successor as the complete and ultimate life-form, Eggman used the ruby's power to conjure up thousands of replicas of Chaos, Shadow, Metal Sonic, Zavok, and Infinite, whose essence was now part of the Phantom Ruby and under Eggman's control, to fight the resistance. When Classic Sonic and the Avatar managed to destroy the outer shell of the robot, Eggman ejected the core and created a dimension to have his final battle with the trio. Dealing critical damage to Eggman, all three heroes combined their strength to deal a devastating, final blow that cut clean through the Death Egg Robot and caused an explosion that completely destroyed the Phantom Ruby. As the Death Egg Robot exploded, the dimension collapsed and all the replicas soon disappeared, allowing the Resistance to finally claim victory.

Besides the main game series, Dr. Eggman has appeared in several other games than the 2D and 3D platform games as well, such as SegaSonic Cosmo Fighter etc., or appearing as a cameo such as in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS..
Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball

In Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball, in an attempt to turn the Animals of Planet Mobius into robots, Dr. Robotnik took control of Mount Mobius. On this mountain, the doctor created the Veg-O-Fortress, a fiendish contraption powered by the mountain's volcano, which was robotizing Animals at an incredibly fast rate. To protect his fortress, Robotnik constructed a lethal defense system powered by the volcano, called the Pinball Defense System. Sonic and Tails soon mounted an air assault on the fortress, only to get blasted by Robotnik's cannons. Unfortunately for Robotnik, Sonic surived the attack and began making his way up through the Veg-O-Fortress's defense system, seizing the Chaos Emeralds that kept the fortress stable and freeing the Animals of Mobius along the way.[12] When the Veg-O-Fortress began to crumble, Robotnik tried to escape in a spaceship, but got intercepted and defeated by Sonic. Falling from space upon his defeat, Robotnik landed in the sea around his Veg-O-Fortress, just as it sank into the sea.
In the game, Robotnik serves as the final boss. On the Sega Mega Drive version of the game, he is fought in Robotnik's Ship, and on the Sega Game Gear/Sega Master System version of the game, he is fought in Final Showdown.
Sonic Drift series

In Sonic Drift, Eggman is one of the four playable characters in the game. His vehicle in this title is the Egg Typhoon, a vehicle reminiscent of the Egg Mobile.
In gameplay, Eggman has poor acceleration but high maximum speed. On the race track, Eggman's special ability is dropping mines on the tracks that halt and knock a Ring out of whoever runs into them.
Sonic Drift 2
In Sonic Drift 2, Eggman is one of the seven playable characters in the game. His vehicle in this title is again the Egg Typhoon.
In gameplay, Eggman's strength is a sturdy chassis and his weakness acceleration; much like in Sonic Drift, his car possesses descent speed and very high handeling, but also low acceleration. On the race track, Eggman's special ability is the "Mine", which is the same ability he wielded in Sonic Drift; with it, he can drop mines on the tracks that halt and knock a Ring out of whoever runs into them (like when using the Mine).

In Sonic and the Secret Rings, Dr. Eggman does not appear. However, he is mentioned by Sonic when he meets Eggman's counterpart from the world of the Arabian Nights, King Shahryar.

Eggman is a playable character in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. He is a Skill player, despite his rather large size, and he's also unusually fast. However, Dr. Eggman is lacking in power, and his stamina isn't that strong either.
Eggman has missions in the Nintendo DS and Wii versions of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. in the DS version these are:
- Jump at least 6m with a jump angle of at least 50 degrees in Long jump
- Do not lose any stamina and finish in first place in 400m (you lose if the speed meter crosses the line)
- Perform 3 successful yell throws. This can be done by shouting towards the microphone, when you get a GOOD or GREAT rating from your throw in Hammer throw
- Perform a GREAT throw in the Javelin Throw
- Score a basket in Dream basketball
- Defeat Waluigi in cycling
- In the Wii version, the missions are:
- Shoot 9 point circle within 3 attempts in archery
- Finish in 2nd place or better in single sculls
- Throw the hammer in between 50 and 55m in Hammer throw within 3 tries
- Win in fencing without getting parried by your opponent more than five times
- Shoot down 3 or more targets with the smallest crosshairs in skeet
- Win a Dream Table Tennis match without using a special move
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games
He is also a playable character in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, in the DS version, he conspires with Bowser to steal all of the Snow Spirits so that it will never snow in Vancouver. However, Mario and Sonic team up and defeat their scheme.

In Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Dr. Eggman appears as a playable character. In this game, he is available from the beginning. For the racing in this game, he is driving the Egg Monster, which is a modified Egg Mobile.
In gameplay, Eggman has maximum speed and high turbo-boost, but low maneuverability and acceleration. His All-Star Move, "Missile Madness", causes the Egg Monster to transform into a flying machine that fires missiles at his foes.
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Dr. Eggman appears as a playable character again. The player can unlock him after clearing all five Mirror Grand Prix with Podium finishes on the console versions of the game, or by clearing all normal GPs with Podium finishes on the 3DS version. For the racing in this game, he is driving a red six-wheeled 'tank' that has his face on it, which can transform into a boat, a plane, or a car, depending on the surrounding terrain.
In gameplay, Eggman has high speed and handling, above-average boost, and very low acceleration. His All_Star Move surrounds him in a holographic Death Egg and lets him fire homing missiles at opponents.

Sonic Dash

In Sonic Dash, as of update 1.10, Dr. Eggman appears as a boss in the game. During the fight, Eggman will be piloting the Egg Mobile, which has been equipped with extra rockets/missile launchers.
During the first phase of the fight, Eggman will fire missiles from the rear which the player has to avoid. For the next phase of the fight, Eggman will fly ahead of the player, from where he will drop Bombs on the road in different formations. The player's only option at this point is to dodge the bombs. The next phase focuses on attacking Eggman. During this phase, Eggman will try to fly away, only for the playable characters to reach him using a Spring. The player then has to tap the green target reticles that appears, which will make the playable characters attack Eggman. After landing three hits, Eggman will be defeated and the player will receive points. If the player misses a hit though, the doctor will escape without the player receiving points.
Personality

Eggman is a short-tempered, raucous, pompous, cruel, evil genius who is constantly planning to take over the world. His primary motivation throughout most games is his psychotic belief of self-entitlement. Arrogant and narcissistic, he constructs countless technological wonders in his own image to fuel his massive ego, usually reinforced by his goal of finally constructing the Eggman Empire, and doesn't care where it starts. His narcissism is such that when he first discovered the Phantom Ruby, what it showed as his deepest desire was Eggmanland complete with various labels of his names and statues to himself, and was saddened when the illusion ended.
Although Eggman is a villain, he helps Sonic when the world is at stake; though the reason is always because he knows there would be nothing left for him to conquer if the planet was destroyed. In some of his incarnations, he actually displays a begrudging respect of his arch-enemy, Sonic.
Despite his intelligence, Eggman can be very immature, throwing temper tantrums when Sonic manages to wreck into his plans. An example of his immaturity is in the ending of Sonic Unleashed, when Orbot begins to insult him over his constant failures and calls him a loser; Eggman screams "Oh, shut up!!", attempts to kick him only to comically fail, and then chases him through the desert while making agitated noises and violently flailing his arms in an attempt to grab him.
Although Eggman is known for childish outbursts when angry, there are a few rare instances where he comes across as stoic and even-toned when extremely aggravated or during very serious situations. Notable instances of this include the Central City incident: After Tails not only beat him to his crashed missile, but also disarmed it, leaving any chance at him destroying Central City to be impossible, he proceeded to threaten the young fox while barely even raising his voice; and also the Deadly Six incident, where he, after being taunted by the then-renegade Zeti about their impending destruction of the world via their stolen Extractor, threatened them in an even-handed manner to destroy everything they desired before smashing the ice-block communication set they were using and retaining this tone when telling them his hands are okay from smashing the ice blocks so long as he can strangle a Zeti with his bare hands.
Eggman seems to overlook crucial details in his plans, such when he orders his robots to fire at Sonic while he is escaping with Princess Elise, failing to realize that they could possibly injure or kill Elise if they land a direct hit on Sonic and overlooking Dark Gaia's immature release. He also was shown in Sonic Colors to be somewhat sarcastic, as evidenced when questioned by Orbot and Cubot as to whether he wanted the remaining aliens, to which he told them in a flippant manner that he actually wanted a cheeseburger and a shake. Similarly, he has occasionally utilized a rather bleak sense of humor, such as in Sonic Colors with his PA announcements at Starlight Carnival, where he says in one of them "We seem to be losing pressure on level seventeen. Please hold your breath against the harsh vacuum of space until you pass out from oxygen starvation. After that, you won't care. Enjoy the ride!", as well as in his propaganda video "Come Join the Eggman Empire", where he jovially narrates that being in an area filled with pollution is a lot better than with clean air especially after a robotomy treatment that saps its citizens of their ability to eat, sleep, and think ever again that he claimed was the "good life."
While Eggman's motives for conquering the planet and attempting to wipe out entire populaces are never made clear, what is clear that Eggman is primarily concerned about obtaining power and dominance for himself, with his violent tendencies and insanity mounting as the series continues.

To this end, Eggman has never shown a willingness to do good or help others without it serving his own ends in some shape or form. While displaying a comical disposition later on in the series, he is quite clearly a cruel minded and brutal man who will use any opportunity presented to him to fuel his self-serving desires, even if that means exploiting worldwide catastrophes to obtain power and dominance. From abducting and transforming animals into robot armies, to leading large scale attacks on a terrorist level, Eggman's numerous crimes and exploits continuously transition into more destructive ramifications. He never acknowledges the results of his actions such as the pollution from his fortresses and strongholds that poison the surrounding environments or the ruins that are left from his own attacks on various cities and lands. His exploits have led to numerous tragic events, such as Chaos flooding and utterly destroying all of Station Square and Dark Gaia nearly consuming the whole planet, as well as threatened the welfare of time, space, and the universe itself.
However, despite his desire for world domination, Eggman does have a human side, and does not appreciate senseless destruction, tormenting and killing from other individuals and forces who are beyond his control. In Shadow the Hedgehog, he is shown to be disgusted and shocked at the thought that his own grandfather would sacrifice his own people for the sake of research and aid the Black Arms. This demonstrates that even if Eggman does not mind causing chaos and destruction, he ultimately knows that there is a line that others should not cross and was afraid his grandfather did so through betraying humanity and aiding a species that wanted to eliminate the human race. This shows that the doctor has some form of loyalty to the human race and could not fathom the idea of betraying his own species to that of a vicious and demonic alien empire, despite some of their actions mirroring his own in terms of the scope of their plans and the destructive ramifications of their actions.
While this seems contradictory towards Eggman's previous exploits of joining forces with other creatures bent on destruction, it seems that he still wishes to paint his grandfather in a positive light as he was his hero in his childhood. This more humane side to the doctor is shown in full force at the end of Sonic Adventure 2, where he has an honest and genuine conversation with Tails about how much he adored his grandfather, questioning the actions of his fallen idol and wondering if he intended to destroy him as well. Additionally, in Sonic Lost World, he unhesitatingly jumped in to save Tails from being attacked by a Crabmeat-controlled Cubot, and when questioned by Sonic over having rescued one of his worst enemies, Eggman admits that he's "a complicated guy."
Despite this, Eggman seems to have no problem in committing senseless killing and destruction as long as he is the one in control of the forces doing so. It would seem that the doctor is so bent on authority, that he refuses to let other forces destroy his planet unless they are under his complete control. This is shown when Chaos betrays Eggman and floods all of Station Square, an action that Eggman had planned Chaos to do from the very beginning regardless of the beast's betrayal against him, but refused to allow his rampage to continue as Chaos was no longer under his control. Additionally, in Sonic Adventure, he launched a missile deep into the heart of a heavily populated Station Square to utterly destroy it, even if that meant killing himself (even going as far as to state 'I'll take the whole city with me'), as a twisted form of revenge and victory over Sonic after his plans to use Chaos to dominate the planet failed. In Sonic Adventure 2, his desire for destruction appears at its height as he laughs insanely at the Eclipse Cannon's impending firing at the planet, which would have had devastating effects to billions of lives, until his grandfather's true operations were activated. He also admits that had he had the chance to use the space colony ARK to collide with Earth, he would've done so a long time ago, showing admiration towards his grandfather's mad projects, and only decides to prevent them from coming to fruition in order to save his own life as escape was impossible with the colony on its collision course.
In Sonic Unleashed, there is a possibility, realistically speaking, that he murdered millions when reawakening Dark Gaia by splitting the planet itself apart, though the effects of the quake in relation to the earth's populace is never touched upon. In Sonic Lost World, Eggman contemplates destroying one of his own doomsday machines to ultimately destroy the Deadly Six, even if it means taking many innocent lives with them, much to Sonic's disgust. According to his PA announcement in Sonic Colors, his park can be considered a lethal weapon in itself as most of the rides lead to horrifying and agonizing deaths and circumstances should anyone ride them. Lastly, in the beginning of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), he orders his robots to launch numerous missiles at Sonic with no regard for any that may be caught in the crossfire.
Regardless of how many lives may or may not have been lost to Eggman's various schemes, the evil scientist clearly demonstrates a complete disregard for all life, even his own on occasions, as well his own creations, and will go to any means necessary as long as his goals of destroying Sonic and his friends, conquering the planet, and establishing his empire are met with full success. With the means for Eggman's plans to succeed often resulting in massive amounts of chaos and destruction, the success of his schemes would also result in a world slowly dying away from Eggman's ruthless and tyrannical rule.
Sonic Forces showcases a world nearly conquered by Eggman and his forces, with the villain going as far as to attack and utterly destroy entire cities in order to drive out and eliminate the last pockets of resistance against his rule, and has even gone as far as to plan to conjure a second sun to crash down on the Earth to wipe out any remaining pockets of resistance, making clear that he intends to recreate the Earth to be his Empire from its ashes as a result. While urban areas are utterly devastated, the areas previously overflowing with nature are now slowly dying, as Eggman's forces begin constructing fortresses and factories throughout, depleting the area's resources and causing massive amounts of pollution, which eat away at the surrounding environments. In addition, in his capitulation message requesting for the resistance to surrender and trying to negotiate the terms of surrender, he lets slip that he intends to lock them away in an underground prison before stopping himself.[13]
The various, dark futures within Sonic CD also provide a glimpse of the horror that would be a world under Eggman's control; twisted steel, pollution, and ruin, to the point that even Eggman's own creations are in pitiable states, illustrating that once Eggman has seized control of the world, he will become a ruthless tyrant who will exploit all of the planet's resources to the point that they are polluted or depleted as even his own creations suffer. This could imply that once Eggman has conquered the world, there will be little need of his robotic army as he primarily uses them to conquer territory and will be seen as expendable to him and left to rot. This would further be indicative towards how Eggman has previously treated his robots if they failed him, ordering torturous redesigns on his various E-Series robots if they did not complete their missions and even abandoned Orbot and Cubot in the vastness of space without a second's hesitation, though they would later rejoin the doctor sometime later despite this. Also, in Sonic Lost World, Eggman is content with conquering what is left of the world after the Deadly Six's actions, supporting that Eggman does not care what condition the world is in as long as he is the one ruling it.
Perhaps the most frustrating and deadly aspect about Eggman is his tendency to always escape at the last minute, even as all his creations and machines crumble and blow up around him, ensuring that he will always be back again with another scheme to endanger the planet and beyond. No matter how close Sonic appears to be finally catching the villain and putting him out of commission, the doctor always has an escape plan, which ironically enough, are the only plans he can formulate that Sonic has been known to fail in foiling, making it nearly impossible for both individuals to defeat the other for good, making their battle a never ending one.
One of Eggman's more admirable, if not dangerous, traits is his courage throughout life threatening situations. Despite Eggman's continuous use of machinery to both protect himself and fight his opponents, Eggman shows considerable bravery and very rarely shows fear, regardless of who or what he is facing. Even in the wake of the Black Arms invasion, Eggman remains very composed and even enters their base of operations without showing any fear. His persistence to control other creatures bent on mass destruction and approach them to ultimately tame them, including Chaos and Dark Gaia, also illustrate his apparent lack of fear.
Eggman, while sending out his army to do most of his dirty work, has also been known to lead missions personally with himself in the field for both amoral and noble deeds, though with self serving interests always at the forefront of his mind. His apparent lack of fear during these missions can be owed partially to the fact that Eggman has previously shown a disregard for even his own life on several occasions (as in the case of his attempted suicide bombing of Station Square with a missile), as long as his plans come to full fruition. In Sonic Adventure 2, Eggman tells Shadow that he might not survive his battle with Sonic in the space colony ARK and instructs him to finish their plans to use the Eclipse Cannon to dominate the planet and possibly even use the weapon to destroy large portions of it. While the villain has been known to panic when his plans spiral out of control, especially when victory previously seemed assured, he is always able to compose himself long enough to either finish the mission at hand or escape at the last minute.
Ultimately, while not openly violent and ruthless, Eggman is still a highly brutal and amoral villain with an insatiable lust for power, dominance, and, since meeting Sonic, revenge. While still harboring a more humane side and displaying comical undertones, Eggman's ruthless and violent nature can still be seen throughout the series. His uncompromising persistence shared with his appetite for authority and control fuel the conflicts throughout the entire series and guarantee that Sonic will always be needed to stop him.

Eggman's most well known ability is his masterminded plots and schemes which only fail due to Sonic and his friends. He is a remarkable scientist and engineer, as evidenced by the numerous armies of robots, warships, and other mechanical inventions he has created. Eggman is also an incredibly skilled pilot; able to swoop missiles and lasers in his Egg Mobile with skills rivaled only by Eggman Nega and Tails.
Owing to his masterminding plots and schemes, he was also shown to be a genius in strategy and tactics, which was best demonstrated twice: The first time was in Sonic Adventure 2, where Eggman not only came up with the plan to neutralize the Chaos Emeralds, but also guided Tails, Rouge, Knuckles, and Sonic through the path to the Cannon's Core and advised them on how to bypass the various security measures, and even gave some tips on how to defeat the Finalhazard, and even earlier managed to deduce that Sonic and his friends were planning to use a Fake Emerald to undo his plan and proceeded to outsmart them by trapping Sonic, anticipating that he had the fake emerald (and tricking Tails into confirming it). The second time was in Sonic Forces, where he not only made sure to build a backup generator for the Phantom Ruby due to anticipating the possibility that the Resistance would destroy the primary one, but also left disinformation about how the Phantom Ruby was actually generating power and leaving the "generator" as a decoy.
Eggman has considerable physical strength as seen in Sonic Lost World where he was able to shatter a large wall of ice with his bare hands,[14] and in Sonic Riders, Eggman is classified as a Power Type, further implying a high level of strength for Eggman.[15] As seen in some games' endings he is also quite resistant to damage, being catapulted or falling vast distances only to come out scratched up but mostly unharmed.

Despite his physical structure, Eggman is also very athletic; during their early battles, there is almost always a point where Sonic chases Eggman and despite of his weight and Sonic's speed, he always manages to outrun his nemesis long enough to reach his next escape vehicle or weapon. In one cutscene of Sonic Lost World, Eggman is seen to be running at the same speed as Sonic but nowhere surpassing him, stating that Sonic is still the fastest.

Eggman's glasses are shown to be a highly advanced technological eyewear. With it, he could locate the Chaos Emeralds' locations in the corners of the distorted world after they were flung there by Solaris.[16]
Relationships
Sonic the Hedgehog
Eggman has many enemies throughout the series, but his arch-nemesis is none other than Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic always thwarts the doctor's evil plans for world domination. Despite this, Dr. Eggman has teamed up with Sonic at times mostly whenever the planet is in danger by a greater force, showing that they can somehow go beyond their hatred and get along if the situation calls for it. Two examples being in Sonic Adventure 2 when he helps to stop the ARK from crashing into Earth, and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) where he aided the heroes in locating the Chaos Emeralds. In addition, in Last Story of Shadow the Hedgehog, shortly after Sonic tells Shadow to give him the Chaos Emeralds instead, Eggman says "Don't give them to Black Doom!", implying that he at that moment was even willing to let Shadow potentially supply the Emeralds to Sonic if it ensured that they didn't go to Black Doom instead. They also form temporary alliances in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood and Sonic Lost World. This could be because somehow, deep in his heart, he may have a certain fondness for the hedgehog's determination[17] that was as fierce as his own over the years, and gained a certain respect for his constant adversary.
Sonic seems to tease Eggman a lot. It is thought that Sonic might have given him the nickname "Eggman," due to his body shape being an obvious target for criticism. While Sonic usually treats Eggman with playful disregard, Eggman generally views his enemy as either an annoyance or a threat. It is rare that he will ever taunt Sonic back, unless he holds the proverbial cards. It is an obvious fact that Eggman holds a grudge on Sonic most of the time, but in the Sonic Simulator Missions of Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Eggman says, "Now that's the Sonic I know! They don't call you the fastest in the land for nothing." Akin to this, Sonic can, at times, show that while he does not like Eggman, He does not desire for him to be seriously hurt or killed. An example of this can be taken towards the end of “Sonic Lost World”, where, upon Eggman’s apparent sacrifice of his own life to save Sonic from a deadly fall into lava, Sonic seemed to be both shocked and even somewhat disheartened by Eggman’s apparent death. However, when the Doctor made his return and claimed he planned on conquering the world as he had always planned, Sonic immediately taunted him and attacked him.
Eggman, ever prideful, maintains a facade that his concern is only for world domination and not Sonic's death, although there are times when he will directly challenge him. As players approach the end of the games, Eggman refers to Sonic in increasingly threatening ways and places greater priority on stopping him. Eggman has made eliminating Sonic his second goal under world domination. It is also implied that his attempts and failures to defeat Sonic may have driven him somewhat insane, as after revealing his plan to use the Time Eater to rewrite history to ensure he came out on top, the Present Eggman proceeded to laugh maniacally and excessively, causing his past counterpart to become disturbed that he may eventually become as crazy as his present self. However, when trapped in the void after both Super Sonics defeated them and the Time Eater, they ultimately admitted they will never be able to defeat Sonic.
Although part of a different continuity, the early Sonic canon shows Sonic and Robotnik as once being good friends, a side of them that's never seen in the games.
Miles "Tails" Prower

Tails is the only person to have ever been able to match Eggman in wits because they are both mechanical geniuses, which was the source of their rival over the course of Sonic Adventure 2. After that it seemed as if their rivalry had watered down, possibly because they had to work together. Once again, in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, they had to work as allies, but this time they shared a mutual respect for each other, because they were both respected geniuses. In Sonic Lost World, Tails is very bitter towards Eggman and often insults him and acts sarcastically, in one cutscene it looks like they almost come to blows, however Sonic steps in. In that same scene, Tails seems upset and even angry because he believes Sonic trusts Eggman to stop the Extractor more than him. Despite this, Eggman saves Tails from Cubot when he attacks Tails because Tails put his head onto a broken Crabmeat, making him "very mean", as Cubot said it. Later when Tails is captured, Eggman says that they need to make sure that "his sacrifice wasn't for nothing" in a low somber voice. Meaning that even though Tails doesn't trust him, Eggman may at least have some kind of respect or even care for Tails. As of now though, Tails is the second greatest threat to Eggman's desire for world domination (the first being Sonic, of course).
Metal Sonic
Metal Sonic is one of Eggman's greatest creations, and his only robot that has come the closest to defeating Sonic. Despite Metal Sonic's loss to Sonic in Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Eggman did not lose hope in Metal Sonic, and has since rebuilt him several times to accomplish his various agendas.[18][19][20]

In time, Eggman got betrayed by Metal Sonic in Sonic Heroes, where the robot seized the Eggman Empire for himself to rule the world and destroy Sonic himself. It is heavily implied that Eggman regretted this outcome, as he proceeded to answer Team Chaotix's interrogation of who locked him up with a saddened tone. However, Eggman did not give up on Metal Sonic even after that, and so reprogrammed Metal Sonic into his obedient servant again when regaining possession of him. Although Metal Sonic still displays rebellious tendencies, it has not stopped Eggman from using him for different missions. In Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Eggman and Metal Sonic share a special victory animation, where Eggman expresses his pride in Metal Sonic by patting him on the back, annoying the robot.
Knuckles the Echidna
The two were once partners, meeting each other for the first time in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, where the doctor, having managed to land his Death Egg in Angel Island, would trick the echidna into believing Sonic and Tails were after the Chaos Emeralds for evil purposes, but later Eggman would reveal his true intentions to Knuckles by snatching the Master Emerald to his Eggmobile and electrocuting its guardian as he tried to protect the massive gem. As Knuckles noticed he had been deceived, he befriended Sonic and Tails and helped them defeat the evil scientist. Despite this, Eggman still did not give up after his defeat to the heroes, sending an Eggrobo and Mecha Sonic to eliminate Knuckles, but failed.
Ever since, Eggman has become the one person that Knuckles can't trust at all and one of his greatest enemies yet, but, due to Knuckles' guillible nature, he still seems to fall for his lies (specially in the earlier games). However, Knuckles has gotten better with this over the years and is more aware of Eggman's plans, even showing a rough attitude towards the doctor in later titles.
Knuckles is the third greatest threat to Eggman, foling many of his plans alongside Sonic and Tails.
Doctor Eggman Nega
In the Sonic Rush series, the counterparts become partners to create their own Eggmanland, Sonic has even mistaken Eggman Nega for Dr. Eggman and thought that it was just a silly new disguise. However, in the Sonic Rivals series, Eggman Nega turned Eggman into a card, sparking some animosity.
It is likely that their alliance fell apart at the end of Sonic Rush Adventure when Eggman Nega nearly blew up the earth against Eggman's wishes. It is also revealed in Sonic Rivals that Eggman Nega is not Eggman's dimensional doppelgänger, but his descendant from at least 200 years in the future, though it's never made clear if Eggman himself knows about this fact.
Shadow the Hedgehog

Since Shadow was created by Eggman's grandfather, Eggman was after Shadow because he was stated as the "Ultimate Lifeform" which could help him conquer the world. When he released Shadow from his capsule, he thought that Shadow was Sonic, but then he realized that the hedgehog merely looked like his rival.
In Sonic Adventure 2, everyone was shocked when they realized that Shadow was created to kill everyone on Earth, even Eggman himself. He also ordered Shadow to work for him, steal all seven Chaos Emeralds, and to keep Sonic out of the way so that he wouldn't foil his plans.
But after Sonic Adventure 2, Eggman seems to have a dislike for Shadow and told Shadow not to disturb him in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). However, he depended on Shadow to eliminate the Black Arms in Shadow the Hedgehog, which nonetheless is the only game in which Shadow actually fights Eggman (as in Sonic Heroes and Sonic Rivals it was Metal Sonic and Eggman Nega in disguise though he does race him in Sonic Free Riders). Eggman in Shadow the Hedgehog was revealed to be the reason why Shadow was still alive, as he sent one of his robots to save him when he seemed to have perished during the ARK incident, although he nonetheless tried to trick Shadow into believing he was one of his robotic doppelgangers. In the Sonic Rivals series, Eggman turns to Shadow for help in defeating Eggman Nega. Though they still appear to be enemies whenever Eggman is the villain, Eggman does have great faith on Shadow's capabilities whenever they encounter a dangerous evil.[21]
In Sonic Forces, it seems that Shadow and Eggman are completely enemies. Eggman in particular seems scorned by Shadow, just like Sonic, and calls him a blasted Hedgehog. Despite this, however, he had no qualms with creating Replicas of Shadow for his Eggman Empire.
Orbot and Cubot

Eggman created Orbot to wait on him hand and foot in Sonic Unleashed, but Orbot has gained a personality of his own, much to Eggman's annoyance. The two tend to argue with Orbot winning, therefore, Eggman will do something like smacking him. And at the end of Unleashed, Orbot still continued to insult Eggman and his blunders, until Eggman finally snapped and chased him off into the sunrise.
In Sonic Colors, Eggman is slightly more annoyed with Orbot and, therefore, gives him more work to do. In response, Orbot will act sarcastic and, like in Unleashed, seize any chance to insult him. Orbot's counterpart, Cubot had his voice chip malfunctioned and adapted to cowboy and pirate accents throughout the story, also much to Eggman's annoyance At the end of Colors, Eggman is seen ordering Orbot and Cubot, to push his Egg Mobile after it lost power, while he's safe and comfortable inside although throughout the trip, Cubot was excited to have his regular voice and began talking non-stop which also leaves Eggman exasperated. The official Sonic Colors website and manual also states that while Orbot obeys Eggman faithfully, he doesn't like him very much while Cubot, on the other hand, likes Eggman but tries to get out of doing any work.
In Sonic Generations, it is revealed that Eggman apparently abandoned Orbot and Cubot in space after discovering the Time Eater. However, they returned in Sonic Lost World.
Gerald Robotnik
Eggman and Gerald Robotnik had not been known to interact with each other, although Eggman had immensely respected his grandfather, who likewise acted as the reason why he desired to become a scientist. It is also implied that his desires to form the Eggman Empire were rooted at feeling his grandfather was unfairly tried and executed. However, his respect for his grandfather was shaken somewhat after learning of Gerald Robotnik's irrational desire of destroying all life on the planet via a collision course from the Space Colony ARK due to insanity caused by grief from Maria's death. His trust was even further decreased when he learned from Black Doom that his grandfather had sold out the Earth to the Black Arms in exchange for completing Project Shadow, although he regained most of his respect for his grandfather when he learned about Gerald's intention of wiping out the Black Arms with the Eclipse Cannon.

Doctor Robotnik appears in Sonic Underground as the tyrannical "leader" of Mobius. After Queen Aleena gave birth to three young hedgehogs, the Oracle of Delphius appeared to her, reporting of Robotnik's takeover, thus, the three hedgehog were separated.
The tyrannical doctor hires two bounty hunters named Sleet and Dingo numerous times in order to capture the hedgehogs but they have failed to do so every time.
Sonic X

In the anime series Sonic X, Dr. Eggman was born on Earth, but got somehow flung into Sonic's world. He has two somewhat absent-minded sidekicks, Bocoe and Decoe, and a messenger robot named Bokkun. By mistake, he and Sonic and co. arrive there, meeting Christopher Thorndyke, among others. He mainly schemes diabolic plans for world domination but Sonic and his friends frequently stops the doctor's plans and protect humanity. Eventually they had to go back to their world because the alternate universes containing the planets were fusing together, and would only stop if Sonic and co. leave. In the third season his role as the main villain is taken over by the Metarex and their leader Dark Oak, resulting in the doctor having to side with Sonic and his friends in order to stop the Metarex.

In the Sonic Boom franchise, Dr. Eggman is the evil, yet quirky supervillain who constantly menaces Seaside Island with his legions of robots in his quest to take over the earth. From his island fortress, he concocts many evil (and zany) schemes to ensure the fulfillment of his ambitions, the destruction of his enemies or both, with the aid of Orbot and Cubot, but is stopped and beaten at every turn by his arch enemy Sonic and his crew.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog serialized manga series published by Shogakukan, Dr. Eggman is a long-time arch-nemesis of Sonic the Hedgehog. Early on in the Shogaku Ninensei manga's run, evil doctor has been looking up for him and finally finds out the connection between Nikki and Sonic. His goal is to catch Sonic and make his lackey as part of taking over the world. In CoroCoro Comics Special manga strips, Eggman has army of robot soldiers and Badniks, but he also takes secret alter ego Dogman, a policeman of the Hedgehog Town. As Dogman, he is capable of teaming up with Anton Beruka, the Number One Hooligan in Hedgehog Town.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by Archie Comics, Dr. Robotnik was a heartless, diabolical tyrant who had already conquered most of Planet Mobius. He was good-natured, up until he became power hungry. His plans of conquering Mobius was assured except for the Freedom Fighters, led by Sonic the Hedgehog and Princess Sally.
During Operation: EndGame, the original Robotnik was instead destroyed and his Empire was taken over by a roboticized version of him from another zone, who subsequently took the name Doctor Eggman.
Sonic the Comic

Ivo Robotnik was created during a laboratory accident involving the goodly scientist Ovi Kintobor, a rotten egg and the Chaos Emeralds. During the series he managed to send Sonic forward in time by six months, during which time he managed to conquer Mobius. Sonic and his friends formed a group of Freedom Fighters with the aim of overthrowing him, of which they eventually did which caused Robotnik to lose his sanity.

Although the character was designed as Dr. Eggman in Japan since the original Sonic the Hedgehog, he was first known as Dr. Robotnik in Western countries. The name Dr. Ivo Robotnik[22] was invented by Dean Sitton for the original Sonic the Hedgehog English instruction manual (as shown above). The first name 'Ivo' was picked primarily because of the phonetic similarity to the word 'evil'[23] (some drafts of the unpublished Sonic Bible also specify that it should be pronounced "ee-vo", rather than "eye-vo") but also because Sitton's sister at the time had a boyfriend from Croatia named Ivo. In addition, Ivo is the reverse of ovi, which is the genitive singular form of the Latin word ovum, meaning "egg." The term robotnik had been coined earlier as a worker or automaton.[24] Other names were also thought of by Dean Sitton, like Mister Badwrench, Mr. Bad Year, Fatty Lobotnik and Dr. Badvibes. The localization was also used in other officially licensed media (such as Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Comic).
Despite his western name, the name "Eggman" can be found in various games. In turn, the "Robotnik" moniker occasionally reached Japanese shores, such as in the bottom of the SegaSonic the Hedgehog Arcade flyer, the name of Robotnik Winter Zone of Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble, and the banners decorating Spring Stadium Zone in the Sega Saturn edition of Sonic 3D Blast. It was not until Sonic Adventure that Sega of America decided to merge the two names together; this resulted in Eggman being his alias and Robotnik being his true last name. This was subsequently confirmed to be the case by Yuji Naka in an interview.[3]
Since then, he has mostly been known in America as "Eggman", with the use of the name "Robotnik" becoming rare. Sega of America has listed his identity as Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik at least once,[25] and has recognized both the first name Ivo and the last name Robotnik as recently as 2011 in the videogames and 2015 in social media.[26][27][28] Despite that, Sega of Japan does not acknowledge an official complete name; the Japanese Sonic Channel lists his full name as unknown,[1] and his in-game profile in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II lists his real name as a mystery.[29]

Science
A potential macrocycle inhibitor of the Sonic hedgehog gene, discovered by a Harvard University research team, was named "Robotnikinin" after Dr. Robotnik. The researchers felt that since Sonic hedgehog was named after the Sega video game character, they should "adhere to the convention" in naming the inhibiting compound after the character's arch-enemy.[30]

Over the years, Dr. Eggman has been used in a variety of merchandise, from collectible pins and plushies to specialized notebooks and clocks.
Critical reception
The character has been well-received, going on to become one of the most well-known villains in gaming. GameDaily ranked him number one on their list of "Top 25 Evil Masterminds of All Time" article, stating "Out of all the evil masterminds in video games, none are more despicable, more cunning, or more menacing".[31] IGN listed him at number nine above Mario-series villain Bowser in their "Top 10 Most Memorable Villains" article, calling him "PETA's videogame public enemy number one",[32] and has also commented that his character is a "pretty clever riff on Teddy Roosevelt" that has added to the attraction of the series.[33] He was featured at number three in a "Reader's Choice" edition of GameSpot's "Top Ten Video Game Villains" article, which noted a massive complaint from fans at his exclusion from the original list.[34] Eggman was also named the 15th most diabolical video game villain of all time by PC World.[35] Game Informer notes that in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, "Eggman's villain ego shows some amusing tarnish after constant defeat at the hands of Sonic."[36]Boy's Life magazine listed "Dr. Eggman / Dr. Robotnik" as number one on their top five video game villains, saying "Two names, one big problem for Sonic the Hedgehog". In the "Top 100 Videogame Villains" of IGN, in 2010, Dr. Eggman was ranked at 11th place.
In an official Sonic character poll by Sonic Team, Dr. Eggman was voted the seventh most popular character in the series.[37]

- Dr. Eggman's Sonic Channel artwork was the base of two 3D-model poses: first for his Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and again for Sonic Unleashed.
- He is the only character who has retained his English voice actor since 2005, whereas all of the other characters have had their English voice actor changed in 2010.
- In Shadow the Hedgehog, Dr. Eggman is the only ally of Shadow's that appears as a guide for both Dark and Hero missions.

- An unused line of Omochao's from Sonic Adventure 2 hints at the possibility that Dr. Eggman's mustache may be fake.[38]
- Sega didn't model any eyes for Eggman's 3D model in all games except Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).[39] Eggman's eyes are blue in this.
- An early version of Dr. Eggman (an over-sized Theodore Roosevelt in pajamas) was originally one of the choices to be the main character and even as the hero of the game that would become the first game of the Sonic the Hedgehog series.
- There is an Internet meme from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog where Robotnik's line "Snooping as usual I see" was shortened into "PINGAS". This joke was even used in the Archie comics.
- The name Dr. Ivo Robotnik may be a reference to its appearance as Ivo backwards is Ovi, which means "egg" in Latin.
- "Robotnik" is an actual word, meaning "worker" or "slave" in the Slavic languages. This could explain his preference for using enslaved animals and robots as his minions.
- In the game of Football: Virtua Striker 3, Dr. Eggman appears in a secret team called "FC Sonic" that make up Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy.
- In Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I, the back of the cards in Casino Street Act 2 has Eggman's face on them.
- Eggman is one of the two canon characters throughout the series originally based off of a political public figure (Theodore Roosevelt) let alone a real person. The other is Sonic, whose personality is based off of Bill Clinton.
- On December 3, 2012, a woman actually named Susan Eggman was elected a member of the California State Assembly. And on June 4, 2014, a man actually named Michael Eggman was elected congress representative of Central Valley, California. So now, Dr. Eggman is the only character in the series who is not only based off of a political public figure, but also shares a name with not one, but two.
- His pose for Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is very similar to his pose in his artwork for Sonic Colors, only with his hands in different positions.
- Dr. Eggman has a recurring theme (that is not his theme from Sonic Adventure 2). It plays in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Unleashed (most notably the Eggmanland's hub world theme), Sonic Colors (plays in cutscenes before the boss fights and in the Sonic Simulator; the latter plays the music in an 8-bit remix), and in Sonic Forces. Dr. Eggman has a combined theme in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) with Elise called, "Elise Goes Alone."
- Eggman has a huge fondness for the own food he cooks in Sonic Unleashed, especially his "Poppin' Eggcorn".
- Eggman's ultimate ambitions appear to involve building theme parks despite having ulterior motives. Such cases are Eggmanland in Sonic Unleashed and all the parks in Sonic Colors.
- Although Dr. Eggman himself doesn't appear in the Super Smash Bros. games, he does appear as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and is also indirectly alluded to in a Codec conversation, where Solid Snake (voiced in the Japanese versions by Akio Otsuka, who is the son of Chikao Otsuka, who voiced Dr. Eggman) mentions that he "for some reason doesn't like [Sonic]." Coincidentally, Solid Snake's father, Big Boss, was voiced by the late Chikao Otsuka in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (at the time under development), whose character also had a goal similar to one of Eggman's (specifically, Big Boss sought to subject the world to becoming a warzone to allow soldiers freedom, a warrior utopia known as Outer Heaven, similar to Eggman's scientist utopia of the Eggman Empire. Both plans also stemmed as a response to perceived unjust actions against people they looked up to The Boss for Big Boss, and Professor Gerald Robotnik for Dr. Eggman).

Although he always has a master plan for doing this, Sonic always provides the wrinkle that makes his plans collapse around him. Eggman views Sonic as his archenemy, who always seems to spoil the doctor's plans of world conquest. Somehow, deep in his heart, though, he may have a certain fondness for Sonic and his determination."
