Doctor Eggman, "The Sidekick"

Template:Character Eggman is the primary antagonist in the Sonic Boom series. He is a human scientist and arch enemy of Sonic the Hedgehog, who seeks to conquer the world and enslave the population,[1] and plots evil schemes against Team Sonic from his evil fortress.[2]

Concept and Creation

When developing the character designs, the designers went with a very formal, military-esque attire for Eggman to emphasize his vanity and concern for his own and his robots' appearances, which is an attribute quite fitting for villains.[3]

Appearance

Unlike his main series counterpart, who is more round on the lower portion of the torso (the stomach), Dr. Eggman's torso is more round at the top, like an upside-down egg, and he has more smooth, yet still broad shoulder. His mustache is also shorter and smoother, and a bit darker, and his legs are slightly shorter with significantly smaller feet.

Compared to his main series counterpart, the doctor's outfit has been dramatically redesigned, having been given a more militaristic appearance. He still wears a red jacket with yellow cuffs, blue pince-nez glasses, white gloves and a set of grey goggles with green lenses on top of his head. However, his goggles are slightly thicker and smaller and has flappable lenses, and his jacket has a front flap that is attached to one of the jacket's buttons and two flap hanging from the back. He also carries a device on his right wrist and wears grey pants and a pair of black boots with high rims.

History

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric

Eggman is set to appear in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric as a secondary antagonist, since Lyric the Last Ancient is the principal antagonist of the game, and the two of them will have an uneasy partnership.

TV series

As he was being pursued by Sonic, Eggman arrived at a mine where he call forth Burnbot to attack the hedgehog. While Burnbot managed to make Tails crash in his Tornado, Eggman's robot lost to Sonic, and the doctor retreated with Burnbot. At some point afterwards, he equipped Burnbot with flamethrowers according to Sonic's taunts. Soon after, Eggman learned that Sonic was holding try-outs for a new sidekick to replace Tails, and Eggman came up with the plan to apply for the try-out (as Sonic welcomed all qualified candidates) as a way to get rid of Sonic of Tails. Despite Sonic's wishes, Eggman got through to the final test where he had to race against Tails and Fastidious Beaver, but during the flying-part of the race, Eggman revealed his plan to Tails and brought forth Burnbot who made Tails crash into a frozen lake. There, Eggman almost succeed in drowning Sonic with Burnbot, but Sonic was saved by Tails and defeated the robot. Eggman then retreated and promised to be back.[4]

In an elaborate scheme to exhaust Sonic and Tails so they would be easy prey for his Obliteratorbot, Eggman came to Tails' house with Orbot and Cubot and lied about his his lair being in need of repair so he could be allowed to live with them. Having been allowed by a reluctant Sonic, Eggman began to drive Sonic and Tails crazy with his obnoxious actions, including randomly starting pillow fights for no reason at all, and was almost kicked out, but a sympathetic Amy convinced Sonic and Tails to give him another chance. Eggman afterwards kept the duo awake all night with social activities, greatly exhausting them. By the next morning, Eggman dropped the act and revealed his plan to Sonic and his team and summoned Obliteratorbot to destroy them. However, Obliterator misheard Eggman's orders due to a glitch and began thrashing his lair instead. Eggman convinced Team Sonic to help stop his robot and they travelled to the lair where Eggman helped them stop Obliteratorbot, though they were still too late to save the lair. Eggman then attempted to stay with Sonic until he had made repairs, but Sonic took him back to the ruins of his lair.[5]

While spying on Team Sonic, Eggman discovered that Tails' new robot, UT, was creating tension between the team by revealing their hidden thoughts from translating the subtext of their conversations. To divide the team and leave them vulnerable, Eggman secretly switched UT out with a copy that would saying what he wanted and turn Team Sonic at themselves. Eggman's plan went smoothly until he decided to take a break and listen to the real UT vocalizing his own self-praise. Soon after though, Eggman was confronted by Tails who offered him a deal: he would let UT go and Tails would become the doctor's assistant. Eggman accepted and allowed Tails to send a goodbye message with UT to his friends to keep them from rescuing him. Thanks to Tails' hidden distress call however, Eggman found Sonic and his friends arriving at his lair to save Tails, who he had to give up since he had not signed the contract Orbot had made. Eggman summoned a robot to take care of Team Sonic, but it was beaten and he retreated back to his lair.[6]

In the local village, Eggman unleashed his Anti-fire Bot to burn it down, but when Team Sonic destroyed the robot, Eggman made a hasty escape. Later, when Sticks sought a pet of her own, Eggman created Cluster Bot whom he planned for Sticks to adopt as her own pet and then use it against Sonic and his team. The plan worked, and a week later, Eggman dropped by Team Sonic and gave Clusterbot, now named "Buster", a bone made from stolen robotics for a gift. This gift turned Buster into a large robot that caught Sonic and most of his friends, but when Eggman's victory seemed sure, Sticks managed to assume control of Buster and had him throw the doctor away.[7]

By cheating himself into becoming a nominee for the Awardy Award with Stufferbot, Eggman attended the Awardies in hopes of getting the award. When Eggman lost the award to Leroy the Turtle however, the doctor attacked with Stufferbot and his minions in vengeance. While Eggman succeeded in incapacitation most of Team Sonic attending the gala, Sticks freed her friends who launched a counterattack on doctor, forcing him to retreat.[8]

While going through his mail, Eggman found a exposition and discovered to his joy that his lair was considered to be shown in Modern Lair Magazine. Despite his improvement attempts however, Eggman's lair did not make the cut for the messenger, but Eggman convinced him to try again in a week. In need of help of someone with the skills to redecorate his lair, Eggman approached Amy for the task, which she accepted. While Eggman had his doubts about Amy's designs at first, the messenger approved of them when he returned and promised to be back with the photographer, though Eggman took credit for all the work. Furious, Amy tried to leave, but Eggman caught her in a cage so she could remain his decorator. The rest of Team Sonic later came to find Amy, but Eggman lied that Amy wanted to stay with him. Soon after though, Eggman found himself and his lair attacked by Team Sonic, who left the place ravaged as the photographer came. With the photographer taking her leave, displeased at the lair, Eggman followed her, begging for another chance.[9]

Archie Comics

Doctor Eggman Sonic Boom Comic

Dr. Eggman in the Archie Comics.

On a bright day on the beach, Eggman was facing Sonic in battle with his Giga-Mech, until Tails, Knuckles and Amy came to Sonic's aid, leaving the doctor outmatched. In the end, Eggman's mech was beaten and the doctor retreated to his lair. Meanwhile, Team Sonic had to deal with the Rock-cyborg, a robot Eggman had planted beneath Tails' house. The next day, as Eggman was having his breakfast served, Knuckles arrived at his doorstep and asked if he wanted to team up.[10]

Personality

Eggman is a short-tempered, egomaniacal, raucous and pompous evil genius, and has all the qualities of a classic villain. He looks, talks, and dresses like a bad guy and possess the psychotic belief of self entitlement of enslaving the world, the destruction of his enemies or both. Because of his constant desire to enslave the world, Dr. Eggman will do whatever it takes to achieve his goals, even if that means getting into otherwise awkward situations or teaming up with an enemy more powerful than he is.[1]

Despite his intelligence, Eggman is deranged and sometimes childish in behaviour. He is also self-deluded and somewhat of a doofus, not using necessary parts for his robots in the belief that they are spare parts, geeking out with Tails in a battle, and sneaking in on his enemies to plant a robot rather than using the opportunity to attack them in their sleep.[10]

Eggman has an extreme hunger for power, and desires attention, adulation, and a little respect. While things might not always work out for him initially, he is always working behind the scenes to get the upper hand and come out on top.[1]

Powers and Abilities

Eggman is a brilliant scientist, mechanic and inventor whose mastery of technology is nearly boundless, able to create all manners of machines, mechs and robots. His remarkable skills as an engineer and programmer are best evidenced by the armies of robots and mechs he has created for his numerous attempts at world domination and destroying Team Sonic, some of which he has been able to build and program in a very short time. He is also a very skilled pilot, able to manipulate many different kinds of his own mechs and vehicles in difficult battles with Team Sonic.

Another of Eggman's skills is his masterminded plots and schemes which nearly always succeed in some way. However, even when successful, his plans usually fail due to Sonic and his friends and his own arrogant overconfidence.

Equipment

Eggmans gaunlet

Eggman's gauntlet.

Dr. Eggman possesses a wrist gauntlet which is equipped with a device that originally belonged to Lyric the Last Ancient. With it, Eggman is able to take control of virtually anything electronic around him as long as it is not manually controlled. However, he is not always able to control it, like when Obliteratorbot went rampant despite his attempts to use this device.[5] The gauntlet also has offensive functionalities, like fire beams that can encapsulate victims in unbreakable force fields and shooting lasers that can incinerate the targets.[8][9]

Relationships

Sonic the Hedgehog

Sonic the Hedgehog is Dr. Eggman's arch enemy and many of his schemes centers around ensuring his destruction. However, their relationship tends to be rather complex. When fighting, Eggman is very hostile towards Sonic while showing a sense of superiority, but he gets furious at Sonic's taunts. Outside their fights however, they are much less hostile, allowing each other to be nearby without them going at each other's throats, though on Eggman's part he uses this as a mean to further his plans. Regardless of his dislike of Sonic though, Eggman has a certain fondness of him and has taken an interest in being his friend.[4]

Orbot and Cubot

Orbot and Cubot are the closest things Dr. Eggman has to friends and even considers them family.[11][5] While they are loyal to him, they are not perfect and they have a tendency to say things he does not want to hear.[11] In return, Eggman gives them little but terrible treatment, either bluntly dismissing their company or pointing fingers at their robotic nature.[5]

Trivia

  • In an interview with Mike Pollock, it was revealed that Eggman is still shaped like an egg, albeit an upside down egg.[12]
  • Despite his title, Eggman is not a real doctor, nor does he have a ph.d.[4]
  • Eggman salvaging Lyric's machine-controlling device in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was first hinted by Steven Frost on Twitter.[13]
