Hahaha! Citizens of earth, lend me your ears and listen to me very carefully! My name is Doctor Eggman, the world's greatest scientist, and soon to be the world's greatest ruler. Now witness the beginning of the greatest empire of all time! Hahahaha!

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Adventure 2

Doctor Ivo Robotnik[12][13] (ドクター・イヴォ・ロボトニック[14][9][15] Dokutā Ivo Robotonikku?), better known by the alias Doctor Eggman[16] (ドクター・エッグマン[17] Dokutā Egguman?), is the main antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is a human scientist who boasts a remarkable IQ of 300 and a passion for machines. Eggman dreams of conquering the world to establish a global empire to build his utopia, Eggmanland. For all his brilliance though, his plans are constantly foiled by his arch-nemesis, Sonic the Hedgehog, and his friends.

Never discouraged by his defeats, Eggman is always able to come up with a seemingly endless supply of plots to make his ambitions a reality. His ambitions and schemes ever growing, his plans have varied from using Animals to power his robots to making incredibly dangerous global threats that have involved building war machines, using doomsday devices to threaten entire nations, and relying on ancient mythological deities or eldritch abominations bent on destruction, all in the name of achieving his goals. At times, Eggman has even gone as far as to target the entire universe and hatched schemes to control spacetime itself.

While all of these plans end in failure due to the continued efforts of Sonic and his friends, the mad doctor is somehow always able to slip away from certain death or imprisonment and escape at the last moment. Eggman's immature character and self-centered thoughts have led to evil deeds, making him the most dangerous threat to ever appear in the universe.

Concept and creation[]

S1concept-eggman

One of the concepts for the hero of what eventually would be known as Sonic the Hedgehog. This character would later be slightly modified to become the main antagonist of the game, Dr. Eggman.

In April 1990, Sega requested a game that involved a mascot for their company.[18][19] They wanted a character to rival Nintendo's flagship mascot Mario; Sega president Hayao Nakayama in particular wanted a character as iconic as Mickey Mouse.[20] Sega had previously used Alex Kidd as their mascot, but because he was considered too similar to Mario, he was deemed unsatisfactory.[18] Several character designs were submitted by its AM8 research and development department. Amongst the proposed designs was a mustachioed man wearing pajamas that bore resemblance to Theodore Roosevelt, drawn by Naoto Ohshima.[1] However, it was stated that the resemblance to Roosevelt was unintentional, the character taking inspiration from other characters instead. Eventually, Ohshima went on vacation to New York, taking sketches with him. There, he went to Central Park, where he would ask locals for their opinions on them. The man with a mustache was the second favorite, losing to a hedgehog character that would become Sonic the Hedgehog.[21]

Though the character was rejected, the concept was revisited by the development team, which wanted an egg-shaped character to be featured in Sonic the Hedgehog.[22] As it was evident that it could not be the game's protagonist, it was turned into the main antagonist instead.[22] Naoto Ohshima aimed for a design easy enough for children to draw, hence the rotund shape.[1] The team also wanted the character who was "the opposite of Sonic"; a character who represented "machinery" and "development" to play on the then-growing debate between developers and environmentalists.[1]

Robotnik 4

At the time of the release of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega of America had little to no exposure to the established Japanese material for the game.[23] Eggman in particular was named "Doctor Ivo Robotnik" by ex-Sega employee Dean Sitton. On the fan website Sonic Retro, Sitton said that he chose the character's first name to be "Ivo" because his sister at the time had a Croatian boyfriend with that name; because the word itself, when pronounced with a soft i ("ee-vo"), had a phonetic similarity with the word evil; and because the name backwards was ovi, which is plural for egg in Latin, referencing the character's appearance.[23] The surname "Robotnik" was chosen because the word had Slavic roots related to work, an idea that fitted with the game having industrial and revolutionary vibes, and the character kidnapping Animals to cram them into slave robots. Other names that Sitton suggested included "Mister Badwrench", "Doctor X", "Mister Bad Year", "Fatty Lobotnik", and "Nasty McRotten".[23] Takashi Iizuka would later reveal in 2016 that the change in the name was done without Sega of Japan's consent.[24]

At the same time, Sega of America developed a new canon through what is known as the Sonic Bible, a collection of internal documents detailing the supposed backstory of the game. These documents established things not seen in Japanese sources, one of them being that Robotnik was originally a kind scientist named "Dr. Ovi Kintobor" who turned into his current self-following a laboratory accident. Additionally, early Western material would give the character different variations in appearance even though it was largely the same as the original Japanese design. The most notable change was the lack of glasses, in their place completely black eyes. Next being a usual lack of gloves along with a curvier moustache as apposed to three giant triangular tufts. Some products featuring Robotnik would even make use of other designs, more commonly the one from the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog television series or the one from the Sonic the Hedgehog television series. However, these changes were slowly abandoned as time went on, and the Japanese canon began being adopted worldwide.

When Sonic Adventure was being developed, Yuji Uekawa redesigned Eggman into a taller man with a different attire. Additionally, during the late 1990s, Sega of Japan made efforts to unite both names of the character, as they did not want a character in the series with two names.[24] As such, the name "Robotnik" would be used as Eggman's real name in the Japanese Sonic Jam Official Guide and Sonic Adventure: Navigation Guide.[9][15] Meanwhile, in the West, the character would be retconned to unify the names worldwide, making "Ivo Robotnik" his true name and "Eggman" his nickname, leaving him with the full name of Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik.[24] This idea was further pushed by Yuji Naka, who explained that "Robotnik" was the character's true last name, while "Eggman" was "a common name taken after his shape."[25] Since then, the character would be more commonly known as "Eggman" worldwide. However, in Japan, the name "Eggman" was always used instead of "Robotnik" with very little exceptions,[26] with sources such as Sonic Channel listing Eggman's full birth name as unknown.[3]

Appearance[]

Dr. Eggman is an obese, tall human with a small, bald head with blue[6][27] eyes, a pinkish nose, and a bushy, mahogany-colored[6] mustache.

During his early years, up until the Chaos incident, Eggman had a totally spherical torso with thin but proportionate arms and legs. He wore a red top with a short yellow cape, attached to his shoulders by a triangular collar, black pants with attached boots and a pair of large silver buttons on the front, white gloves, and mirrored pince-nez glasses. His nose was also bright red, and his mustache was neater, with only three tufts sticking out at each end.

Since the Chaos incident, Eggman has remained obese, but has become somewhat taller and burlier, with a torso roughly shaped like an egg, hence his nickname;[4][28] long, almost disproportionately thin arms and legs; and a softer pinkish nose. His mustache retains its length, density, and mass, while also becoming much more unkempt. For attire, the doctor now wears his tinted glasses, as well as green-lensed goggles known as the "Egg Goggles" as headwear; and an elegant, red coat sporting two square metal buttons on both sides of the chest in gold. These buttons have white straps that run across the coat's sides to identical buttons on the back. The coat also has silver, zipper-like linings down the back, arms, and front, yellow cuffs, and two extensions on the front that have large silver buttons. In addition, Eggman wears white, cuffless gloves on his hands and a pair of black pants with matching boots seemingly attached to them bearing circular plates on both sides of the ankles and three-square ones riding up the shin. While his eyes are barely seen, they can be seen behind his glasses in some cutscenes in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) revealing them to be blue. Early on, Western Sonic media would depict his usual blue glasses as empty black eyes.

On special occasions, Eggman has worn different outfits:

  • For the purpose of camouflage, Eggman wears a military suit that consists of a black helmet that covers most of his head, a pair of large, black glasses, and a jacket that looks almost identical to his normal one except that it is black instead of red.
  • For the purpose of Extreme Gear racing, Eggman wears a bright red coat with a small white cape, two zippers on the sides and one at the center, and yellow cuffs; and a white T-shirt. While still retaining his gloves, glasses and pants, he also wears a white helmet with his goggles and a gray belt with a golden buckle on it.
  • During the Tokyo Olympics, Eggman has worn a pair of black shorts, a white T-shirt, and red and white sneakers with gray soles; in addition to his standard pince-nez glasses and goggles.

During the Solaris incident, Eggman had a radically different appearance. In particular, he had yellow bolt-like buttons on his red coat where the buckles originally were, as well as a slightly raised collar obscuring his chin. His mustache, while still bushy, also looked more groomed, and he also, while still overweight, looked very lean by comparison to his usual designs. His nose was also colored the same as the rest of his skin.

Personality[]

Described as the world's vilest person, as well as its worst screw-up, Eggman is an inmoral self-proclaimed genius scientist who only thinks about doing bad things.[29][30][9][31][15][32] The doctor always aspires to conquer the world to create what he sees as a utopia, dubbed "Eggmanland".[32][33] This gives him ridiculous delusions of grandeur and the psychotic belief that the world's problems will be solved if he rules it despite being far from the case.[34][35] Eggman constantly uses his scientific genius and robotic expertise to create weapons and gadgets in his bid to build Eggmanland and to obtain power and attention.[36][37][12]

Eggmanland hub 2

Noted for being very selfish and filled with ego and greed, Eggman is extremely narcissistic and egotistical, having a tendency to plaster his persona all over his creations and bases to fuel his ego.[31][38][15][39][33] Other times, however, he may also focus his work around other themes.[12] Because he places so much value on aesthetics, especially his own, his design philosophy regarding his inventions often focuses on design and gimmicky more than necessary.[38][15] Overflowing with self-confidence and pride,[40] he always highlights his "scientific genius" when introducing himself,[30][41][42][43] and due to his self-centered character, he hates it when others interrupt his speeches.[44] Additionally, Eggman is not above fleeing during a battle to continue his fight against his enemies in a later moment.[45]

Owing to his selfishness, the doctor never puts a thought on other people,[46] even ignoring his own allies when revealing himself and giving all the credit to himself instead.[47] Additionally, he looks down on almost anybody, referring to others as "insignificant".[47] Further adding to his egomaniac character, Eggman is an opportunist and a disdainful person who is only interested in things that are beneficial to him,[48] does not seek collaborations with others unless they can aid him in some way,[49] and is perfectly willing to lie to others whenever given the benefit of the doubt to abandon them later on.[50][51] He also has a complete disregard for others, even his own minions, and can be very abusive both psychologically and physically with anyone. Once, he brutally beat Emerl up in an attempt to establish a Link with him, and was much later willing to strip him of his personhood to advance his own plans.[52][53] He also treated his E-100 Series robots that did not succeed in their mission very harshly, referring to them as "worthless hunks of junk",[54] and even going as far as to remodel one of them to be part of a pillar onboard the Egg Carrier and put his recorded history into a file of his named "Disappointment".[55]

Despite his intelligence, Eggman can come across as very childlike and immature, which is what makes him so eager to conquer the world.[8][56][57] This childish behavior makes him believe that taking over the world can be easy.[4] Additionally, the doctor possesses a very short temper and can be angered very easily, leading to him throwing emotional and childish outbursts, screaming, and kicking stuff around when things do not go his way.[40][32] The doctor also does not believe in fair play, and prefers to win games by cheating, to the point that he proudly admits it out loud;[58][59] at some point during Dodon Pa's Grand Prix, the doctor secretly got rid of his opponents on a race to prevent them from winning it, and when Team Sonic ultimately won, Eggman stole their trophy and celebrated having done so in front of them.[60]

Eggman dancing

Like Sonic, Eggman can sometimes show a great deal of attitude and cockiness, especially if he feels like he holds the upper hand. In these situations, he will mock his opponents in a variety of ways. Unlike the hedgehog however, this comes out of mean-spirited arrogance and maliciousness rather than of carefree playfulness. On a similar note, he sometimes does not refer to others by their names, instead disrespectfully addressing them with a characteristic of theirs, such as being overweight, even if he himself shares such attributes.[61][62] Sometimes, Eggman can also be brash, careless, and somewhat impatient,[63] preferring to do things his own way and ignoring others' advices.[64]

Eggman stands out with his passion and love of robotics and machines in general.[65][13][6][31][39] A mechanophile,[66][67] he believes that machines look beautiful, and likes the fact that he is able to control them to his will. Similarly, he takes great pride in his Badniks, and refers to them as his greatest inventions.[68] Eggman's vision of a perfect world always involves mechanizing everything on the planet,[9] making it look "beautiful" in the process,[69] even standing by his conviction that living in a heavily industrialized and polluted place is a better alternative to being in one with clean air.[70] His disregard for nature is such that he has no qualms about kidnapping Animals to use them as "living batteries" for his robots.[12]

Eggman profile SG

Dr. Eggman's profile, from the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Generations.

One of Eggman's strongest points is his absolute refusal to give up, even in situations where most would accept defeat.[8][71] Despite the constant defeats he has suffered over the years, he is never discouraged by them,[11][65] merely referring to them as little more than setbacks.[47]

Despite his dedication to his plans, Eggman is never actually sure how to pull them off.[4] He can also be so overly obsessive about achieving his goals that he either overlooks important work, skips key details, or fails to take into account some important factors. As such, he can be very blind whenever he believes he has the upper hand, celebrating too early before he has completely overpowered his enemies, usually leading to his plans progressing much slower than planned; even then, the doctor refuses to listen to the consequences of the poor execution of his own planning and simply complains about his bad luck instead.[72][64] In fact, Eggman has gained somewhat of a reputation for screwing up at his plans, even when he has all the chances of winning with him.[73]

In spite of his immaturity, Eggman can be very serious and threatening. However, he shows this side very rarely, usually when extremely aggravated or during very serious situations. Under this pressure, he intimidates his opponents with death threats while barely raising his voice and keeping a straight posture.[74][75] On a similar note, he was also shown to possess a rather bleak and cruel sense of humor, even joyfully narrating the dangers his interstellar amusement park possessed during the Wisp incident. Similarly, in his propaganda video "Come Join the Eggman Empire" during the War to Take Back the Planet, he happily said that living in an area filled with pollution is a lot better than in one with clean air, especially after a robotomy treatment that stripped its citizens of their ability to eat, sleep, and think ever again; which he claimed to be the "good life."[70]

Eggman is also rather manipulative and cunning. Having noted himself that he is great at acting,[76] the doctor has shown on various occasions an astonishing ability to exploit others to his advantage with ingenious lies and false surrenders. This has allowed him to align simple-minded people like Knuckles to his side,[50] and even lure more clever individuals like Emerl and Sonic himself into his traps.[53][77] Furthermore, he can show surprising foresight when he wants to; most noticeably, during the Space Colony ARK, he was able to discover that Sonic and his friends were planning to fool him by giving him a fake Chaos Emerald to undo his plans,[78] allowing him to set up a trap for his nemeses and even make Tails confirm that this was the case.[79] Additionally, though it is implied that he rarely learns from his mistakes, he can easily outsmart his enemies when he does so; during the War to Take Back the Planet, Eggman not only made sure to build a backup generator for the Phantom Ruby due to anticipating the possibility that the Resistance would destroy the primary one, but also left disinformation about how the Phantom Ruby was actually generating power and leaving the "generator" as a decoy.[80][81]

Eggman seems to have no problem in committing senseless killing and destruction in order to carry out his plans, even going as far as to contemplate genocide[82][83] and outright state that he feels pleasure in brutally murdering his enemies.[84] Not caring about the consequences of his operations over the world's residents,[85] he is willing to destroy virtually anything that gets in his way,[33] from cities[86] to continents,[82] and even tie down or shatter entire planets, if he can gain something from doing so. Furthermore, at the climax of the Lost Hex incident, he was content with conquering what was left of the world after the Deadly Six's actions, supporting that he does not care what condition the planet is in as long as he is the one ruling it.[87] On a similar note, it was implied that part of the reason he recruited Infinite and his Jackal Squad was due to him being genuinely impressed with the mercenary's innate desire to cause the world to become war-torn after seeing his vision via the Phantom Ruby.[88] Described as the most vindictive individual in the world,[30] Eggman is also willing to make deadly, last-minute attacks just to avenge his previous defeats; at the climax of the Egg Utopia incident in particular, he kidnapped Vanilla and took her with him to space as a sadistic form of retaliation following the destruction of the Egg Utopia. Furthermore, while very rarely, the doctor has no qualms about making suicide attacks for the same reasons; during the Chaos incident, he launched a missile deep into the heart of Station Square to utterly destroy it, even if that meant killing himself in the process, after his plans to use Chaos to dominate the planet failed due to interference from Sonic and his friends.[89]

Am I crazy or am I a genius? I've got all the technology in my hands. It's time for me to conquer the world!

— Dr. Eggman's calling card, Sonic Adventure

Owing to his delusions of grandiosity, Eggman, while willing to execute massive attacks for his own ambitions, refuses to let others do such destructive actions outside his direction. This was best shown when Chaos betrayed the doctor and flooded all of Station Square, an action that he had planned him to do from the very beginning regardless of the beast's betrayal against him but refused to allow his rampage to continue aimlessly. Likewise, he is also not tolerant of senseless destruction if done by a third party, especially if it interferes with his own goals of building his Eggman Empire. This was especially evident during the Black Arms incident, where Eggman considered the Black Arms to be a prime threat that could interrupt his plans.[90] Additionally, the doctor's goal is to rule over the world, while having no intention of destroying it[91][92][note 1] and may actually want to protect it from foreign threats.[69] However, this is because he believes world conquest would be impossible if the world itself is gone.[91][93]

Despite his desire for world domination, Eggman does, somehow, have a human side in his personality.[32] While it has been stated that his character is not actually as evil as it looks[69] and that he is not a genuinely bad person whose childish character makes him unable to distinguish between right and wrong,[9] however, the doctor is happy to acknowledge that he and his actions are "evil".[94][95][96] Either way though, the doctor does not appreciate senseless destruction, tormenting and killing from other individuals and forces who are beyond his control; during the Black Arms incident in particular, he was shown to be disgusted and shocked at the thought that his own grandfather would sacrifice his own people for the sake of research and aid the Black Arms.[97] This side is often shown whenever he cooperates with Eggman Nega, whose more genocidal ways of defeating his enemies contrast his own and have even freaked him out.[98] The doctor's more humane side was shown in full force at the end of the Space Colony ARK incident, where he had an honest and genuine conversation with Tails about how much he adored his grandfather, questioning the actions of his fallen idol and wondering if he intended to destroy him as well. His sudden changes of heart from time to time have given individuals like Sonic a hard time figuring him out, and Eggman himself has admitted that he is "a complicated guy" after he saved Tails.[83] Most notably though, Dr. Eggman grows to love his AI creation Sage as his own daughter throughout the story of Sonic Frontiers, even reluctantly agreeing to team up with Sonic in order to defeat The End on account of her advice and bringing her back from the dead in the game's ending.

Eggman has been described as a "self-proclaimed gentleman, a romanticist and a feminist",[57] though he has made statements that suggest otherwise.[99]

Powers and abilities[]

Despite what his appearance might suggest,[100] Eggman is an immense intellectual with an IQ of 300.[3][6] Having inherited his genius from a family of brilliant scientists,[12] he possesses overwhelming scientific knowledge.[32][3] Noted to be the world's greatest scientist[30] and with an unparalleled mastery on robotic engineering,[32][101][56][102][39] he is a brilliant inventor with unmatched technological skills.[85] As a testament to this, some have calculated that if knowledge is interpreted as a parallel of power, Eggman's intellect alone makes him a very powerful individual.[12]

As a testament to his expertise in robotics, Eggman has designed and engineered numerous weapons and devices that include the armies of foot soldiers known as Badniks. These range from basic Egg Pawns and animal-based robots to the more weaponized Egg Gunners and juggernaut-like Interceptors and Big Chasers. He has even created some of the most powerful robots the world has seen, such as Metal Sonic, who rivals Sonic the Hedgehog in speed and power; and the E-Series, the last of which having been called the world's strongest robot.[103] Not only that, he has also created armadas of flying warships known collectively as the Egg Fleet that boast unmatched power throughout the universe; orbital space stations like the E.G.G. Station and the Death Egg (the latter of which is loaded with ground-breaking weaponry); weapons of mass destruction like the Final Egg Blaster and the Chaos Energy Cannon which can destroy star clusters; inventions that can control people's minds on a global scale; and devices that let him harness the Chaos Emeralds' mystical powers to warp time and space to his will.[104] He has even displayed skills in merging naturally existing entities with mechanical or otherwise foreign parts, suggesting some knowledge in biological and alien physiology too: he was able to successfully turn the primordial form of the Time Eater into a cyborg-like creature and merge his finalized Phantom Ruby copy with Infinite. It is also said that he is experienced at company management, having amassed huge profits through production of robot weapons and construction of related facilities.[32]

Eggman's unnamed robot (Sonic Unleashed)

Dr. Eggman piloting one of his battle mechs, from Sonic Unleashed.

Possessing keen vehicle intuition, Eggman has incredible skill in operating his various self-designed vehicles, from his own Egg Mobile to his various mechs and combat machines. Notably, during the Space Colony ARK incident, Eggman was able to power his way through hordes of G.U.N.'s combat robots with his Eggwalker during his invasions of the highly secure areas of Prison Island. Even Sonic has been known to be kept on his toes during his battles with Eggman in his mechs.[77] As seen during Dodon Pa's Grand Prix, Eggman also has excellent skills when it comes to driving and racing in racecars like his Egg Booster. Overall, his skills as a machine pilot are rivaled only by Tails, who was able to beat him during the Space Colony ARK incident in two mech fights. He can also coordinate with his allies very well during battles, as shown during the Sol Emerald incident, where he was able to control the Egg Salamander alongside Eggman Nega; and the Time Eater incident, where he could control the Time Eater with his past self with no problem. On a similar note, even though he has not made use of them too often, Eggman has demonstrated that he is a capable Extreme Gear rider, being able to drive various types of Gear, including his own E-Rider, with great expertise.

Intellect aside, despite Eggman's body type, he is quite physically powerful and good at gymnastics,[105] though some sources have contradicted this claim.[106] Classified as a Power Type,[107] he has considerable physical strength, enough to shatter a large and thick wall of ice[75] and punch away cars and even entire trains using only his bare hands.[108] He is also quite physically durable, being able to survive a fall down to earth from the Lost Hex and emerge from it nearly unharmed.[109] Furthermore, despite what his huge, lumbering frame may imply, the doctor is able to sprint at immense speeds; during various incidents, he was able to run at the pace of Sonic himself for a few seconds to reach his next escape vehicle or weapon,[110] something even the hedgehog has noted.[111]

Equipment[]

Eggman has wielded a number of guns and weapons on several occasions, though he was never shown to use most of them. Early into the Lost Hex incident, he used a laser pistol that could fire shots powerful enough to tear a hole in the Tornado's wings.[112]

Despite how simple they appear, Eggman's glasses are in fact highly advanced technological eyewear. With them, he could track the Chaos Emeralds' locations in the corners of the distorted world after they were flung there by Solaris.[113]

Like his glasses, Eggman's jacket is equipped with several gadgets that can be activated with the press of some hidden buttons. During the first EX World Grand Prix for example, he could activate a holographic screen from his left arm.[114] Also, with a push of the lower-right gold button on his jacket, he can extend the wings of a jetpack on his back and initiate flight.[115]

Sonic Riders - Dr

When racing with Extreme Gear, Eggman is known to use gadgets such as comically large party poppers and mechanical boxing gloves to attack his opponents.

During the Chaos incident, the doctor briefly used a small, unseen object that allowed him to teleport himself and other desired subjects somewhere else. However, the properties of this invention remain unconfirmed.[116]

Weaknesses[]

Despite his amazing intellect, Eggman's impatience and arrogance tend to make him act hastily and overlook crucial details when he tries to concentrate on a greater goal. Such was the case during the Dark Gaia incident when he awoke Dark Gaia too early in order to harvest his power for the construction of Eggmanland without even considering the repercussions of awakening Dark Gaia before he had reached full maturity.[72] His childish behavior can be considered a weak spot of his as well.[8] He also tends to let his guard down too easily causing Sonic to attack the weak spots in his mechs.[6]

Far from being subtle, Eggman's overconfidence sometimes makes him boast a lot, making him accidentally reveal details about his plans and give hints to his enemies as to how to defeat him, all of this without him even realizing what he is saying.[117][118] He is also noted to not be very good at keeping things hidden.[119]

Relationships[]

I'm sick of you getting in the way EVERY SINGLE TIME!

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Lost World (Nintendo 3DS)

Sonic the Hedgehog is Dr. Eggman's sworn arch-nemesis,[120][4][121][31] and his eternal rival.[122][28][120] The two met either during[123] or before[32] the South Island incident, with the hedgehog having crushed the doctor's plans for world conquest since then. Because of this, the one thing Eggman dislikes most is Sonic,[6][11] having made it his sworn goal to destroy his nemesis with his scientific prowess.[120] If their relationship can be described with a single word, it is hostile,[124] but explaining it properly is surprisingly difficult.[32] One thing is for sure, though: Sonic, who has crushed each and every one of Eggman's plans, is no longer the only thing the doctor has in mind for his plans of conquest. If he wants to conquer the world, he has concluded that he has to defeat Sonic first. However, while he does not want to go out of his way to find the hedgehog and duel him, Eggman seems to be somewhat enjoying himself while toying with Sonic when he shows up at a crucial moment in his plan.[32]

From Eggman's point of view, Sonic can be described as an "annoying, impertinent, and hateful hedgehog" who always thwarts his great plans.[17][117] Even though he has made it clear that his goal is to conquer the world, his dearest wish is actually to defeat his nemesis.[3] As such, the doctor despises the mere sight of the hedgehog,[32] as well as his speed,[117] and if there is anything for him to be happy about, it is when he can attack him unilaterally.[32] Eggman's obsession with defeating Sonic reaches such extents that, by the time of the Chaos incident, he already had nightmares of the hedgehog that filled him with dread,[31] and his repeated defeats in the hands of his adversary may have even driven him insane later on, as seen by his maniacal celebrations whenever he thinks that he will reign victorious that have disturbed his own past counterpart.[47] However, despite their opposing goals and rivalry, it is implied that somehow, deep down, the doctor may even have a certain fondness for his nemesis and his determination.[4][125][56]

Sonic teases his adversary a lot, being the one who gave Dr. Robotnik the nickname "Eggman", due to his body shape being an obvious target for criticism.[25][12][126] Conversely, it is rare that the doctor will ever taunt the hedgehog back, unless he holds the proverbial cards. On the other hand, the two are the kind of adversaries that take each other on not only in battles, but also when it comes to verbal exchanges such as insults and witty quips; when Eggman insults Sonic, the latter always has a witty retort ready, and the sarcastic banter between the two is always a highlight of every conflict between them.[32]

Oh, I hate that Hedgehog. That doesn't change the fact that he is a formidable adversary. I respect him, but I don't have to like him.

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Frontiers

Eggman holds a complete disregard for Sonic's life, celebrating the latter's supposed death during the Space Colony ARK incident in cold blood.[127] He expressed similar elation when learning that the hedgehog's cyber corruption from saving his friends and Eggman himself during the Starfall Islands incident left him trapped in half-dimensions, expressing that his only true regret towards Sonic's fate was that he could not personally finish him off before then.[128] By the time of the War to Take Back the Planet, his hatred of the hedgehog had grown to the extent that he created an invincible weapon of destruction to deal back all the defeats his nemesis inflicted on him. Nonetheless, he does retain at least some grudging respect for his adversary,[35][129] being "man enough" to recognize that a purely organic creature like him being able to reach Mach 1 is a very impressive feat in itself.[130] He will also reluctantly aid Sonic when push comes to shove if an even greater threat emerges, though he has made it very clear he only does this out of desperation and would not wish to align himself with him otherwise, even if it ensured he could escape.[131][132] Owing to this as well as his pride, he is also willing to spin the alliance in a way that allows him to make it fall under his terms, such as claiming Sonic to be inducted into the Eggman Empire.[133]

Young Prower has a keen mind and lots of potential. Yet he's fixated on worshipping Sonic. Then again, maybe that's for the best. Given all the trouble he gave me in Station Square and on the ARK, I think I prefer him wasting his potential lingering in Sonic's shadow.

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Frontiers

Miles "Tails" Prower is another one of Eggman's worst enemies. The two first met during the West Side Island incident, where the fox aided Sonic during his quest to defeat the doctor. However, they did not interact with each other a lot since then. This changed during the Chaos incident, where Tails managed to stop Dr. Eggman from destroying all of Station Square on his own. Since then, they have had a few moments of interaction with each other.

Dr. Eggman saving Tails from a controlled Cubot, from Sonic Lost World.

Notably, Tails has been one of the very few that were able to match Eggman in intellect, which is the source of their rivalry; from the doctor's point of view, despite his own narcissism, his adversary is a person to be respected for his keen mind and potential. However, he appears to dislike that the fox wastes all of that staying around with Sonic all the time. Due to this, he can easily deduce that he is going to appear after the hedgehog does. Regardless, Eggman prefers it this way, because of the trouble Tails has given him in previous crises.[134] His admiration towards his enemy was best displayed when they and Sonic teamed up during the Lost Hex incident to defeat the Deadly Six, where the villain even rescued his adversary from being killed by a rogue Cubot, despite being a target of his insults, and when the fox got captured, the doctor said that he and the hedgehog needed to make sure that "his sacrifice was not for nothing" in a low somber voice. On a similar note, at the end of the Space Colony ARK incident, the two geniuses had a conversation after the defeat of the Finalhazard.

Killing you will be my pleasure, fox boy!

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Adventure 2

In spite of all that, Tails himself has been a target from Eggman's insults as well, the latter mockingly calling him a "two-tailed fox"[135] or "fox boy". Additionally, the doctor has no trouble in intimidating the fox with death threats or even attempting to kill him if that means advancing his own plans as well.

Knuckles the Echidna[]

Sonic 3 bad ending Sonic 2

Dr. Eggman and Knuckles during the Angel Island incident, from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

One splendid trick after another... Knuckles truly is a force to be reckoned with.

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

Knuckles the Echidna is another one of Eggman's enemies, though this was different when they first met during the Angel Island incident. Here, the doctor, days after having had his Death Egg crash-landed on Angel Island, encountered the echidna at the Altar of Emerald in the Hidden Palace. When Knuckles attempted to attack Eggman, the latter begged him for mercy and falsely told him that Sonic and Tails were after the Chaos Emeralds for evil purposes. Easily fooled by the doctor's lies, Knuckles formed a partnership with him to prevent the heroes from disrupting his operations.[50][136] However, Eggman eventually revealed his true intentions to Knuckles by stealing the Master Emerald. As Knuckles noticed he had been deceived, he befriended Sonic and Tails and helped them defeat the doctor.

Ever since, Knuckles has become a hindrance in Eggman's side.[137] The doctor himself has referred to the echidna as a "knucklehead".[138] However, he does appear to show admiration towards Knuckles' power, and even said he truly was "a force to be reckoned with".

Amy Rose[]

Clever girl. Tenacious. She's come a long way since being an easy pawn in my schemes to ensnare Sonic. It seems like she had some trouble finding herself. But when you hang around with someone with as big an ego as Sonic, self-identification has to be a challenge.

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Frontiers

Eggman does not think too much about Amy Rose. In the rare occasions they interacted, the doctor merely found her to be an easy pawn in his plans, using her to manipulate Sonic to ensure her safety. This extended to the Eggman persona used by Neo Metal Sonic, that found Team Rose to be an eyesore and condescendingly treated them like children.[139] By the time of the Starfall Islands incident, however, the villain would acknowledge her as a clever, tenacious girl that has grown from her earlier days as an easy victim. He nevertheless thought she had a potential incapable to reach if she kept following Sonic.[140]

Metal Sonic[]

Eggman and Metalsonic

Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic, from Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Metal Sonic is one of Eggman's favorite inventions,[141] whom he has described as his masterpiece that only his superior intellect could create.[68] The doctor created Metal before the Little Planet incident with extreme accuracy to Sonic[142] for the sole purpose of defeating his nemesis with speed and power surpassing the hedgehog's own.[143][137][13][144][145] Even though the robot lost to Sonic during that incident, the doctor did not lose faith in him, and has since rebuilt him several times to accomplish his various agendas, even to the point of summoning the original back from Little Planet at the midst of the Death Egg mk.II incident. This is due to Metal Sonic's sophisticated and wasteful design, which Eggman is very proud of.[141] In most of the incidents Metal Sonic was involved, he was just another one of Eggman's pawns and henchmen who obeyed his orders without question.[146][147] In time, however, Eggman got betrayed by Metal Sonic during the Neo Metal Sonic incident, where the robot seized the Eggman Empire for himself to rule the world and destroy Sonic himself. It was heavily implied that Eggman regretted this outcome, as he proceeded to answer Team Chaotix's interrogation of who locked him up with a saddened tone. However, Eggman did not give up on Metal Sonic even after that, and so reprogrammed him into his obedient servant again when regaining possession of him. Although Metal Sonic still displays rebellious tendencies, it has not stopped Eggman from using him for different missions.

Fang the Hunter[]

E-102 Gamma[]

I'm proud of you, Gamma! I knew you'd be of use to me!

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Adventure

E-102 Gamma was the second model of the E-100 Series robots built by Dr. Eggman during the Chaos incident in order to aid him in the destruction of Station Square.[148] From the start, it was obvious that the doctor held a lot of respect towards Gamma, and always praised him and treated him very well, specially when compared to the insults and abuse directed towards his enemies and the other E-100 Series robots.[149][54] Nevertheless, it was implied that Gamma was being used by Eggman as just another robot to serve his evil plans.[150][151] Also, Eggman did not know that Gamma betrayed him after the Egg Carrier fell into the ocean, and it was implied that he was not aware of the fact that the robot was responsible for the destruction of the other E-100 Series robots either.[55] Due to this, he appeared to mantain his respect for Gamma following the Chaos incident, and has even built other robots in his image.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

Epic

Eggman discovering that Shadow is his grandfather's creation, from Sonic Adventure 2.

Shadow... can you hear me...? This might be the last chance I have to speak to you, so... What I said, about having created you... It was all a lie. Everyone thought you'd died during that horrible incident... but I rescued you with one of my robots... You lost your memories, that's all. You really ARE the Ultimate Life Form my grandfather created!

— Dr. Eggman, Shadow the Hedgehog

Shadow the Hedgehog is another one of Eggman's enemies. Their relationship mainly comes from the fact that the black hedgehog was created by the doctor's own grandfather, Gerald Robotnik.[124] The two first met during the Space Colony ARK incident, in which Eggman was after Shadow because he was stated as the "Ultimate Lifeform" which could help him conquer the world. As such, he raided G.U.N.'s military bunker[12] on Prison Island and released Shadow from his capsule. At first, Eggman thought that Shadow was Sonic, but then he realized that the hedgehog merely looked like his rival. He also ordered Shadow to work for him, steal all seven Chaos Emeralds, and to keep Sonic out of the way so that he would not foil his plans. However, everyone was shocked when they realized that Shadow was created to kill everyone on earth, even Eggman himself.

After this incident, when Shadow was thought to have died, Eggman sent one of his robots to rescue him. However, while not one of Sonic's closest allies, the black hedgehog has come to be another thorn in the doctor's side over time.[12] During the Black Arms incident in particular, Eggman falsely told an amnesiac Shadow that he was his own creation, but he ultimately ended up admitting at the end that this was not true. Though they still appear to be enemies whenever the doctor is the villain, Eggman does have great faith on Shadow's capabilities whenever they encounter a greater threat.[152] This was specially evident during both the Onyx Island incident and the Ifrit incident, where the two teamed up since they both sought to defeat Eggman Nega.

In the prelude to the War to Take Back the Planet, as well as during the war itself, Shadow and Eggman were portrayed as complete enemies. The doctor in particular seemed scorned by the hedgehog, just like he would be with Sonic, and called him a "blasted hedgehog".

Gerald Robotnik[]

As a child, I looked up to my grandfather because of all the great things he accomplished in his life. He was my hero, and I wanted to be a great scientist like him.

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Adventure 2

Eggman and Gerald Robotnik had not been known to interact with each other, although Eggman had immensely respected his grandfather, who likewise acted as the reason why he desired to become a scientist. However, his respect for his grandfather was shaken somewhat after learning of Gerald's irrational desire of destroying all life on the planet via a collision course from the Space Colony ARK due to insanity caused by grief from Maria's death. His admiration was even further decreased when he learned from Black Doom that his grandfather had sold out the earth to the Black Arms in exchange for completing Project Shadow. However, much of his respect for his grandfather was regained when he learned about Gerald's intention of wiping out the Black Arms with the Eclipse Cannon as atonement for collaborating with them. It is implied that Eggman’s reason for becoming evil was because of the repercussions of his grandfather’s persecution and implied execution, seeing it as an injustice.

Maria Robotnik[]

I never really knew my cousin Maria. Everyone spoke of her like she was very special. All that love for someone who was gone when I was! Right! There!

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Frontiers

Eggman never knew Maria, but according to Egg Memo 17, he appears to resent her for people thinking better of her and ignoring him, thus, hurting his ego. However, due to his appreciation for his creation Sage, the doctor wondered if Maria was like her.

Emerl[]

Sonic Battle upset Eggman

Eggman upset with the Gizoid for not obeying his commands, from Sonic Battle.

Hah, ha, ha! You're so soft!! That's understandable, of course. You were raised by those little wimps! Their weakness will be the end of you! Haaah hah hah hah!

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Battle[53]

Eggman learned of the existance of the Gizoid through his grandfather's documents, and was more than willing to go to adquire him for another scheme to conquer the earth. At first, however, he was very disappointed after seeing that the robot could not obey his orders and did not return his Chaos Emerald. As such, the doctor threw the Gizoid away at the beach near Emerald Town, as he developed the more loyal E-121 Phis and did not need the robot anymore.[153][154] He would come to regret having done this however, seeing that his first Phis severely underperformed against Rouge.[155]

Later on, Eggman would make multiple attempts to seize the Gizoid, now known as "Emerl" and having befriended Sonic and his friends, to attach him to the Final Egg Blaster for a plan to conquer the world.[156] As expected, however, many of his endeavors were in vain. Eventually, the doctor, after learning that Emerl had obtained the seven Chaos Emeralds, plotted to lure the robot to the new Death Egg and put him under his control.[71] By falsely surrendering to Emerl, Eggman succeeded, noticing how gullible the robot was due to him being raised by Sonic and his friends.[53] However, this led to Emerl going rogue and threatening to use the Final Egg Blaster to destroy the earth.[91] Fortunately, the robot was stopped by Sonic before being destroyed, putting an end to Eggman's plans.

Blaze the Cat[]

This is the end for you, Blaze!

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Rush

Blaze the Cat has been another one of Eggman's enemies. The two first met right before the Sol Emerald incident, where the doctor went to the Sol Dimension to steal the Sol Emeralds from her.[157][158] For the rest of that incident, Eggman would occasionally encounter Blaze on earth in Sonic's universe and battle her, only to lose in all of their fights and be forced to give up a Sol Emerald. They later interacted during the Jeweled Scepter incident, where they displayed a similar rivalry.

Like Eggman Nega, Eggman does not seem to take Blaze very seriously, and would mock her during the Sol Emerald incident.[158] He also showed an evident lack of fear towards her, stating that her fire powers "did not scare him"[159] and calling her a "cat girl" during their first encounter on Sonic's world.[158] However, the doctor eventually acknowledged the cat's powers and boldness, mainly because they refuted his idea that girls could not be as strong as boys.[99]

Eggman Nega[]

Eggman has a rather cold and tense relationship with his distant descendant from the future,[160][161][45] Eggman Nega, though this has varied over time. It can be assumed that this turbulent relation comes from Eggman Nega's conviction that Eggman's failures in the hands of Sonic and his friends have disrupted his family's legacy,[162][160][161] which is the main reason why Nega has come to Sonic's world so many times.[160][161] Nonetheless, Eggman Nega's dryness allows him to easily team up with Eggman when the two have a common goal in mind,[161] though it has been implied that Eggman Nega is the one who seeks Eggman out in the first place when they begin a collaboration.[163][164] Also, the two are always in nearly perfect synch when they work together and hardly ever argue over what they should do during their schemes, showing that they share a similar mindset. However, because of Nega's total refusal to retreat and willingness to make deadly attacks to deny his enemies' victory,[45] he has more homicidal tendencies than Eggman, which tend to freak his ancestor out.[98] Additionally, Eggman Nega's babbling on battle has frustrated Eggman on a few occasions.[165]

When they are not collaborating, Eggman Nega is usually Eggman's enemy. Noticeably, during the Onyx Island incident, Nega turned his ancestor into a card and took over the Eggman Empire to avenge his constant defeats and restore his family's reputation in the future.[162] Similarly, during the Ifrit incident, Eggman was very panicked when he found out that Eggman Nega took over his Badniks to destroy his base. In both of these incidents, the doctor has not hesitated in cooperating with those who also opposed Nega, even if those were his enemies beforehand.[166]

Orbot and Cubot[]

Eggman with Orbot and Cubot, from Sonic Channel.

I take the time to program life-like personalities into some minions, and all it does is frustrate me. Once-- just once!-- I'd like one of my creations to fill me with pride instead of regret!

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Convergence

Orbot and Cubot have been Eggman's minions for some time before the Wisp incident.[37] However, out of all of the robots the doctor has made, Orbot and Cubot are the ones he shows the least respect for, having even expressed his wish to conquer the world so he could dispose of them during the Wisp incident.[167] Ultimately, he did end up abandoning them after discovering the Time Eater during its incident,[47] but the two returned to his services at the time of the Lost Hex incident.

Due to Eggman's intolerance on incompetence and failure, Orbot and Cubot have been commonly subjected to both verbal and physical abuse from the doctor, with Eggman having called them "useless"[168] and wishing they could make him proud of them instead of frustrating him.[169] Because of this, he reacts with surprise and confusion when he sees the two working hard to make him feel better.[55] However, in some sense, this can be owed to the fact that Eggman only created them to kill some time rather than with a firm purpose,[68] which is what makes them "unique" compared to the doctor's past minions.[170]

Himself[]

Two Eggmans

Modern Eggman discussing with Classic Eggman, from the console/PC version of Sonic Generations.

Let me just say that this was a brilliant plan that you came up with.
Don't get too self-righteous. It'll be your plan pretty soon.

— Classic Eggman and Modern Eggman, Sonic Generations (console/PC)

Classic Eggman is Dr. Eggman's counterpart from the recent past. When they first met each other during the Time Eater incident, they worked together as partners to dispose of their respective Sonics. The two had a great deal of mutual respect for each other, and they both referred to each other as "gentleman geniuses". Due to their shared defeat at the hands of Sonic at the end of the Time Eater incident however, their relationship started to deteriorate, prompting them to argue quite frequently. Classic Eggman soon lost all respect for his Modern self upon learning that the latter has never defeated Sonic once.

Classic Sonic[]

You've got a lot of nerve for a pint-sized Sonic from another dimension!

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Forces

Dr. Eggman first fought against Sonic's younger self Classic Sonic during the Time Eater incident in an effort to erase him. He later re-encountered him during the War to Take Back the Planet. However, during that time, it was heavily implied that he considered Classic Sonic to be more of a nuisance than a true threat to him, especially compared to his Modern counterpart; when encountering him, he dismissed him as not being worth his time and tried to disengage him before ultimately fighting him, while by contrast he scolded Infinite for letting Modern Sonic live during their encounter at Mystic Jungle. He does, however, acknowledge that Classic Sonic has "a lot of nerve."

The Deadly Six[]

Zavok disapproves

Eggman being threatened by the Deadly Six's leader, Zavok, from the Wii U version of Sonic Lost World.

I will burn your worlds, you rebellious scum! I will destroy everything you love and make you watch!

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Lost World

The Deadly Six are some of Eggman's worst enemies. The doctor first interacted with them during the Lost Hex incident, where he invaded the Zeti's home and enslaved them with the Cacophonic Conch in an attempt to conquer the earth. During this time, Eggman appeared to show very little remorse and respect for them, usually sending them to do tasks almost constantly and punishing them with the Cacophonic Conch whenever they failed to satisfy him. After the Deadly Six rebelled against Eggman, the doctor showed a great resentment towards them, as they had decided to use the Extractor, which Eggman wanted to use for his own purposes, to avenge the doctor for having abused them. In fact, at the Frozen Factory, when Zavok and Zazz mocked Eggman, Sonic and Tails on a hologram, the doctor called them "Eggman wannabes" and threatened to destroy them and everyone they love while speaking in a serious tone.[75]

Despite his hatred for the Deadly Six, Eggman did form an alliance with Zavok during Dodon Pa's Grand Prix. Like during the Lost Hex incident though, the doctor showed very little respect for the Zeti, calling him "pathetic" and "weak" when he disappointed him.[171] He similarly refused to listen to Zavok, specially whenever he pointed out the doctor's poor execution of his plans.[64]

Infinite[]

Infinite was one of Eggman's minions. The two first met months before the War to Take Back the Planet, when Infinite and his squad raided the doctor's base. During this, the Phantom Ruby let Eggman see Infinite's ideal vision of the world. Impressed, Eggman offered Infinite a place in the Eggman Empire, which the latter agreed to.[88] After Infinite lost to Shadow in a failed attempt at defending Eggman's facility, Eggman, mostly to have an "invincible weapon of destruction" to use against Sonic for his latest plans, proceeded to subject Infinite to a procedure that bonded him with the finalized Phantom Ruby prototype, with Infinite being all too willing to undergo the procedure to avoid being subject to being weak ever again.

Eggman seemed to respect Infinite's power and trusted him with taking care of Sonic's friends, although he did not agree with most of his actions, such as when he showed concern when Infinite let Sonic live knowing that Sonic would become a threat to his plans in the end.

Sage[]

SCSageChristmas

Eggman and Sage in Cyber Space, from Sonic Channel.

You've exceeded your function! I'm very impressed with you, Sage. No! I'm proud of you!

— Dr. Eggman, Sonic Frontiers

Sage is a very advanced AI created by Dr. Eggman to help him in his latest scheme during the Starfall Islands incident, and one of the few beings to whom he has shown genuine affection and care. As usual, the scientist would be very proud of her for her effectiveness, referring to her as his "greatest creation"[172] and praising her for protecting him from the hostile environment of Cyber Space[173][174] and messing with Sonic on the Starfall Islands. Nevertheless, he would still treat her aggressively when annoyed; noticeably, he angrily rejected her suggestion to team up with his nemesis to escape Cyber Space. However, despite Sage not being a living being or his family, the doctor gradually[175] began seeing his creation as a "very adorable, personable program"[174] and his "daughter",[176] a feeling that was mutual.[177] This even lead to him reluctantly agreeing to help Sonic to make her happy.[178] When Sage supposedly sacrificed herself to save the planet from The End, her death clearly left an impact on Eggman, and he silently grieved. Once the villain realized that she survived, though, he expressed relief, happily calling her "[his] girl".

Notes[]

  1. The North American and European manuals of Sonic Adventure stated that Dr. Eggman wanted to use Chaos' powers to destroy the world. However, it is very likely that this was a translation error, as this is not mentioned in the game itself or in Japanese material; instead, the doctor wanted to use Chaos to destroy Station Square, then build Eggmanland over it, and conquer the world from there.

To us, he's Eggman, but in the rest of the world he's called Robotnik. We wanted to unify that into one name moving forward. This is something I actually did in the Sonic Adventure series. 127. Sonic Team (June 23, 2001). Sonic Adventure 2. Dreamcast. Sega. Area/level: Tails (second fight). "Eggman: Hahahahahaha! I finally did it! I've defeated Sonic! That annoying hedgehog is now gone forever! He's nothing but floating chunks in space now! What are you going to do now Tails? If you are against me, you'll suffer the same fate as your buddy, Sonic!"
  128. Sonic Team (9 November 2022). Sonic Frontiers. Sega. "Amy: Oh... Sonic, no... / Knuckles: What happened to him? / Tails: He took on so much cyber-energy. It corrupted him. / Knuckles: Meaning? / Tails: He's stuck between realities. / Eggman: My only regret is you denied me the pleasure of finishing you off, rodent!"
  129. Sonic Team (November 7, 2017). Sonic Forces. Nintendo Switch. Sega. Area/level: VS. Infinite. "Eggman: You never fail to surprise me, Sonic. I didn't believe Infinite could lose. Victory will be so much sweeter when I defeat you. Don't think this is over yet, you blue nuisance. My plan just went into overtime!"
  130. Sonic Team (November 8, 2022). Sonic Frontiers. PlayStation 5. Sega. Area/level: Egg Memo 20. "I can't remember the last time I had a good night's scheme without him [Sonic] ruining it. Still, for a purely organic creature, obtaining Mach 1 of his own volition is impressive. I'm man enough to admit that."
  131. Sonic Team (October 18, 2013). Sonic Lost World. Wii U. Sega. Cutscene: The Enemy Of My Enemy Is...? "Eggman: Man up, Tails! I don't like working with my most hated enemies any more than you do, but our entire world is at stake!"
  132. Sonic Team (November 8, 2022). Sonic Frontiers. PlayStation 5. Sega. Cutscene: Sage and Eggman interaction #4. "Sage: After reviewing your entire campaign history, I have found that the most optimal course of action [for escaping Cyber Space] is to... create an alliance with Sonic. / Eggman: WHAT?! / Sage: B-But together you stopped the ARK! Overcame 'Neo Metal!' You...! / Eggman: I don't want to hear it! Those alliances were purely out of desperation! / Sage: But time is running out! / Eggman: I don't want to hear it! Find me another option!"
  133. Sonic Team (November 8, 2022). Sonic Frontiers. Sega. "Eggman: Sonic! I here-by induct you into the Eggman Empire and order you to save us all! Understand? This is not an alliance! / Sonic: If that's how you want to spin it, Dr. Ego-man.
  134. Sonic Team (November 8, 2022). Sonic Frontiers. PlayStation 5. Sega. Area/level: Egg Memo 24. "Sonic's here, so it's no surprise Tails is too. It's a pity. Young Prower has a keen mind and lots of potential. Yet he's fixated on worshipping Sonic. Then again, maybe that's for the best. Given all the trouble he gave me in Station Square and on the ARK, I think I prefer him wasting his potential lingering in Sonic's shadow."

She's come a long way since being an easy pawn in my schemes to ensnare Sonic. It seems like she had some trouble finding herself. But when you hang around with someone with as big an ego as Sonic, self-identification has to be a challenge."
