Doctor Robotnik's Fortress is a location that appears in the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog television series. It is Dr. Ivo Robotnik's central base for his plots to take over Mobius.

Description[]

Appearance and architecture[]

Dr. Robotnik's Fortress is a gray, multiple-story building on top of a mountain in Mobius. There is also a golden statue of Dr. Robotnik with his fist raised next to the base. The building itself has an unknown number of floors below ground, several windows, and multiple entrances. Inside, there are various rooms, where Robotnik usually resides and from which he gives orders to his lackeys. The golden statue has an accessible interior; there is a usable window in place of a bellybutton[2] and the dome at the top can be opened up and used as an observation tower.[3]

Somewhere outside there is a large courtyard,[4][5][6][7] a large sewage pipe,[8] and sometimes large piles of garbage.[9][10] Near a road leading up to the fortress, there is a guard booth with a barrier gate arm (complete with a gloved hand on the end) and a large sign telling visitors to go away.[11] Closer to the fortress, leading up to a doorway stoop, there is also a bridge.[12]

The interior of the fortress is mostly corridors. Many of the building's rooms are unknown, as the only room typically shown in the series is the laboratory[13][14][5] which might be connected to the basement.[15] However, the fortress also features more casual rooms, such as a kitchen,[16][17][18][19] a dining room,[10] a living room,[9] and a home theater.[20] There is at least one bathroom but there are possibly more; the shower[14] is separate from the tub[3] and the toilet is usually mentioned in plural. Two bedrooms have been shown: Scratch's[21] and Dr. Robotnik's[14] respectively although Grounder's bedroom is implied to exist[4] and a prison cell was once modified to house Sonic the Hedgehog.[22] (It's unknown if Coconuts was granted a dedicated space but there is a living room/recreation room which is designated as the squad break-room.)[23] There is also at least one room which may serve as an office[9][23] and other rooms large enough for loot storage.[4]

Some rooms appear to be multipurpose (the tub is in an enormous room with a computer and a throne) or portrayed differently between episodes but it's also possible there are multiple of any given room. All of the ceilings are typically vaulted or else the walls tend to be very tall, which provides easy movement for giant robots and monsters alike.

Defenses and features[]

Though not shown very often, the entrances of Robotnik's fortress feature several simple traps[21][2] and what might be a moat or a river.[12] There are also three control rooms for firing up major defensive artillery[2] plus multiple trap doors,[24][13][23][25] a powerful prison block,[4][8] and a dungeon inside.[26][5][23][24] The Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad also patrol and guard the fortress when they're not attacking Sonic, handling housekeeping duties, or relaxing.

There may be multiple robots serving Robotnik at any given time. In addition to Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts, and any badniks which serve as a necessary antagonist in their respective episode, there are sometimes unnamed background badniks (such as the one who brought in Wes[27] or the one who carried Tails off to his cell.)[24] This could imply other robots routinely serve unseen around the fortress (such as the camera robot who served as a distraction for Wes when he tried broadcasting),[28] even if they're custom-created per task (such as the multiple card-playing robots.)[29] However, Robotnik seems to routinely scrap, destroy, or otherwise throw out badniks considered insufficient to their task or who anger him[20][30][29][15][10] or else he'll fire them as soon as they've successfully completed their job.[31]

The fortress' walls and doors are also known for being very fragile, as Momma Robotnik (and other characters, like Sonic) can destroy them with no problem.[11][22][12][3] The fortress has been completely destroyed at least twice and rebuilt at least once.[20][12]

History[]

TV series[]

Past[]

Built over a couple of decades ago. Dr. Ivo Robotnik would keep his old classmate Lucas trapped in the fortress's dungeon.[26] Dr. Robotnik's fortress was also the place where the doctor would build many of his creations, including his robots Scratch and Grounder using an earlier version of the Robo-Matic Machine.[32]

Season one[]

In the present day, Dr. Robotnik built many of his creations in his fortress, including his Egg-O-Matic Tunnelizer and Town Terrorizer[33] and the Subatomic Slow-go Beam Weapon.[34] At some point, Sonic visited the fortress after his friend Tails mysteriously disappeared.[2] The fortress would also be briefly visited by Dr. Robotnik's mother, Momma Robotnik, during her birthday.[11]

Games[]

Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine[]

In the 16-bit version and 8-bit version of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Dr. Robotnik built the Mean Bean-Steaming Machine inside his fortress, a machine made to roboticize Beans in an effort to rid Mobius of fun and music forever. However, a Bean called Has Bean managed to destroy the machine. While Has Bean's friends celebrated in the fortress, Robotnik was forced to escape.

Trivia[]

  • Dr. Robotnik's Fortress is not seen in "Sonic Christmas Blast"; instead, Dr. Robotnik resides in the city of Robotropolis.
  • In the 16-bit version of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Dr. Robotnik's fortress is seen in the background during the characters' cutscenes and the credits of the game. While it looks like it did in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, it lacks the golden Robotnik statue next to it.
  • Despite the building itself being called a fortress, it is generally referred to as Robotnik's home; the doctor himself has referred the fortress as his home once.[22]
