Doctor Robotnik’s Energy Ship[1] (グラビトンモービル Gurabiton Mōbiru?, lit. "Graviton Mobile") is a boss that appears in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. It is fought at the end of Carnival Night Zone Act 2. It takes eight hits to be destroyed. In both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the locked-on version of the game, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, only Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower will fight against the Energy Ship, however, it is possible for Knuckles to fight the Graviton Mobile as well.

The Energy Ship is an orange electrical mobile created and piloted by Dr. Robotnik that has four generators with dark green orbs on them, which produce electricity. On the bottom, the Energy Ship has a heavy dark green globe that is used to create a pull with the electric generators.

When the player enters the open arena, Dr. Robotnik appears from the right side of the arena in his Energy Ship and starts following Sonic/Tails from above. After a while, Dr. Robotnik will drop a large dark green globe on the ground, which he will start hovering directly above. He will then activate four generators on the side of the Energy Ship which will start rotating around it, creating a sort of electricity wall that arcs downwards around the globe. This will turn it into an electromagnet for about seven seconds that will draw the player towards the globe and the electric wall, unless the player is constantly moving away from it. Robotnik then descends to pick the globe up to repeat the pattern, which is the player's best chance to attack the Energy Ship. However the dark green globe will also damage the player when the player is touching it, as will the the generators if the player touches them as they retreat from hitting the Energy Ship.

The Energy Ship has a tendency to take a long time to complete due to the limited chances to attack it and, possibly, Carnival Night Zone Act 2 being a long level. Getting a time out can be the biggest problem when confronting this boss. There are several changes to land more hits on the Energy Ship by using Sonic's Insta-Shield at right spot or having Lightning Shield. Tails can also have the advantage of being able to damage the mobile from below whilst in flight. After eight hits, the Energy Ship gets destroyed and the player opens the capsule, thus completing Carnival Night Zone and moving on to IceCap Zone by using a nearby cannon.

  • In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, Knuckles skips this boss battle completely by taking the lower pathway, where only Knuckles can access at the start of Act 2. In the end of the act, the player ends up to the same room, where Knuckles sends Sonic/Tails flying to the boss arena. In the same room, there's capsule and teleporter, that after finishing the act will transport Knuckles to the IceCap Zone.
    • If the player takes the regular path via an upwards facing propulsion tube near the beginning of the act, the capsule won't appear and Knuckles has to climb up the tube to fight the boss. EggRobo will be seen controlling the Energy Ship.
      • Beating the boss also causes cutscene mishaps.
