The Dreamcaster is a character that appears in the Sonic Boom television series. It is a phantom-based robot with hypnotic powers created by Dr. Eggman to take over the world.

Appearance

Dreamcaster appears as a skeletal robot without legs or pelvis (instead having just a robotic tail) with metallic plating of light grey and white with red ridges. He has long sharp claws and a skull-like head with a ridged jaw and red spirals for eyes. He also wears a tattered dark robe to make his appearance look more ghostly.

Dreamcaster was made by Dr. Eggman for a mind-control scheme. Hijacking the TV studio at night, Dreamcaster broadcasted hypnotic messages to the sleeping villagers despite opposition from Sticks the Badger, whom he instigated the arrest of. Once Dreamcaster had the Village under Eggman's command (except for Sticks who had no TV), Eggman prepared a satellite to broadcast Dreamcaster's signal worldwide. While Dreamcaster kept Sticks at bay, he was destroyed by her when she returned with gear that protected her and her team from his mind-control, thus freeing the villagers.

Personality

Preferring to work under the cover of night, Dreamcaster possesses a calm and bewitching demeanor and has a silky smooth voice which he uses to hypnotize others. However, he also seems to be savage and prepared to leap into a fight, as he immediately ripped off his cloak with a roar when challenged by Sticks.

Powers and abilities

The Dreamcaster can hypnotize others by emitting dream-controlling mind waves through his red swirly eyes. These signals can be broadcasted through television for mass mind-control.

Dreamcaster's hypnotic commands slowly take effect at first, enabling him to subtly influence his victims' behavior. Once the commands take full effect, the victims are turned into sleepwalking zombies which Dreamcaster can fully commandeer. In this state however, Dreamcaster's victims possess limited cognitive abilities and decreased motor functions. In addition, Dreamcaster is capable of levitation.

As an Eggman robot, Dreamcaster is also able to receive power remotely from Eggman's lair.

Weakness

While those with strong wills can resist his mind-control (for at least a while), Dreamcaster cannot hypnotize or control people wearing tin foil hats. Also, when destroyed, all those under his control are automatically set free.

Being an Eggman robot, Dreamcaster relies on Eggman's lair to provide him with power. As such, should the lair run out of power, then he will too.

Trivia

• Dreamcaster is likely named after the Dreamcast, Sega's final home console. His color scheme bares a resemblance to the Dreamcast's American marketing of the orange swirl logo and white plastic casing.
  • Dreamcaster's eyes could also be a reference to the Dreamcast logo which is also depicted as a spiral.
• Dreamcaster's metaphor of sugar plums is based on the Christmas poem from Clement C. Moore's A Visit from St. Nicholas (1823). The line "Visions of sugar plums danced in their heads," of children sleeping and dreaming.
