"Dreams of an Absolution" is Silver the Hedgehog's theme in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) performed by Bentley Jones (credited as Lee Brotherton).

Legacy[]

The instrumental version plays in White Space in Sonic Generations when the player approaches Silver for his boss fight. The song also reappears in Team Sonic Racing as Silver's Team Ultimate theme. A shortened remix of Silver's Team Ultimate theme is used as Super Silver's Super Form transformation theme in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle.

Lyrics[]

(And every night, I lay awake)
(And I find no conclusion)
(And every night, it just stays the same)
(In my dream of an absolution)
In the nightlight, do you see what you dream?
All your troubles, are they all what they seem?
Look around you, then you may realize
All the preachers, all with their lies
And I might know of our future
But then you still control the past
Only you know if you'll be together
Only you know if we shall last
In the night light, do you still feel your pain?
For the valor you waited never came
If you were able, would you go change the past
To mend a faux pas with one last chance?
And I might know of our future
But then you still control the past
Only you know if you'll be together tonight
'Cause every night I will save your life
And every night I will be with you
'Cause every night I still lay awake
And I dream of an absolution
'Cause every night I will make it right
And every night I will come to you
But every night it just stays the same
In my dream of an absolution
In the nightlight, do you see what you dream?
All your triumph, and all you'll ever be
Look around you, then you may realize
Happiness lies trapped in misery
And who knows what of our future
We can all try to change the past
Only you know if you'll be together tonight
'Cause every night I will save your life
And every night I will be with you
'Cause every night I still lay awake
And I dream of an absolution
'Cause every night I will make it right
And every night I will come to you
But every night it just stays the same
In my dream of an absolution
'Cause every night I will save your life
And every night I will be with you
'Cause every night I still lay awake
And I dream of an absolution
'Cause every night I will make it right
And every night I will come to you
But every night it just stays the same
In my dream of an absolution
And you'll see (and you'll see)
What you'll be (what you'll be)
And you'll see (and you'll see)
All you can be (all you can be)
Oh (oh)
'Cause every night (every night)
And every night (and every night)
And every night (and every night)
I will dream (I will dream)
And you'll see (and you'll see)
(Yeah) That this is my dream (what you'll be)
And you'll see
Every night (all you can) (oh)
I will always dream (yeah)
'Cause every night (every night)
And every night (and every night)
And every night (and every night)
I will dream (I will dream)

Remixes[]

Like Sonic's theme, "His World", there are multiple versions of this song. There is the in-game original, a "Nightlight" remix (remixed by composer Tomoya Ohtani), a "K-Klub" remix, a "Starry Night" remix, and a "Lee Brotherton vs. Jun Senoue" remix. At the 2008 Summer of Sonic event, a "Nightlight" Remix of the song was performed. Bentley Jones has released several versions of the song on his TRANS//LATION series of albums: the 2011 version on his bilingual album TRANS//LATION 2, the 2016 "Nightlight" version from TRANS//LATION 3: The Complete Anthology, and the 2019 version from TRANS//LATED: 10th Anniversary Album, with the latest version having an official music video.

In correspondence with Silver's storyline, all versions of the song have a futuristic aspect to them. The K-Klub remix is even more upbeat than the original. The 2016 Nightlight remix is a slower, semi A Capella version, while the LB vs JS version is much more rock oriented as Jun Senoue produced its music track. The LB vs JS version is the most popular out of all the remixes and is featured along with the original on the CD for the game, Sonic the Hedgehog Vocal Traxx: Several Wills.

The lyrics are nearly identical in all versions (the only difference being the backup vocals) and simply play at different speeds.

  • And I might know of our future - Silver coming from the future.
  • If you were able, would you go change the past - Silver going back in time to change the future.

  • We can all try to change the past - Sonic, Shadow and Silver having the power to change the past.

Trivia[]

  • The bridge sections of "Dreams of an Absolution" are similar to the music for Green Hill Zone. Bentley Jones claims that even though this was not intentional, he was later aware of the similarity.[1]
  • The song is also part of the repertoire of bar and store music in Sega's Yakuza series, appearing in Yakuza 4 and Yakuza 5.
  • The songwriter, Bentley Jones has stated that the song's lyrical content refers to his recent breakup with his then boyfriend.[2]
  • Bentley Jones mentioned that he wasn't that keen of the original arrangement by Tomoya Ohtani, and he also stated that the 2011 version is what it will sound like if he handled the arrangement. He did admit that he was wrong as fans loved it so much.[3]
