Not to be confused with Drift.

Drifting[1] is a technique that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is an effect that occurs when making sharp high-speed turns.

Description[]

The drift is an effect that is activated on its own when the player is running at high speeds and arrives at a sharp turning point. At that moment, the character will skid to slow down and make a sharp turn forward. However, if the player moves through a drift-able area at low speed, they will just walk through it normally. Depending on the game, this effect can be beneficial to the player.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Storybook Series[]

Sonic and the Secret Rings[]

In Sonic and the Secret Rings, the drifting mechanic made its first appearance. In gameplay, equipping the "Expert Drift" Skill grants the player the ability to gain extra EXP upon drifting correctly.

Sonic and the Black Knight[]

In Sonic and the Black Knight, the drift made a return. In this game, the player gains a "Drift Bonus" for points whenever the drift occurs.
