To use the Drill Claw, the user must be placed in midair, be it from a jump or from gliding in air. When performing the Drill Claw, the user will then whirl directly down through the air while spinning, with his/her fists pointing downward and will damage any enemy the user comes in contact with below him/her. This is similar to the Spiral Upper.
Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
The Drill Claw first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, where the player can perform it by pressing the B button while the playable character is in midair. If the user (In Knuckles' case he must possess the Shovel Claws) makes contact with digable ground while performing the Drill Claw, the user will automatically perform Dig. The performance of the Drill Claw can also be stopped before reaching the ground, allowing the user to either fall normally or resume the Glide, making the Drill Claw a good way for the user to quickly descend while gliding. In both versions, Knuckles' Drill Claw can be enhanced with the Hammer Gloves, which allows him to break iron craters. When performing the Drill Claw in these games, Knuckles will dive down so fast that he leaves afterimages.
Sonic Advance 2
In Sonic Advance 2, Knuckles can perform Drill Claw by pressing the B button while he is in midair or by performing his downward directed Mid-Air Trick Action by pressing down on the D-pad and the R button on the same time. In this game, however, Knuckles' fists will be engulfed in flames when drilling towards the ground.
Sonic Advance 3
The Drill Claw made another appearance in Sonic Advance 3. In this game, however, Knuckles must have Amy Rose as his partner, meaning Knuckles must be the character the player controls, and Amy serves as the character that follows the controlled character. With Amy's influence, Knuckles can perform the Drill Claw by pressing down on the D-pad and the B button on the same time. The appearance of the move in this game is the same as in Sonic Advance 2.
