Drill Eggman II (ドリルエッグマンII Doriruegguman II?) is the sixth boss that the player encounters in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It will pop out the rocky ceiling at Mystic Cave Zone Act 2 and it is piloted by Dr. Robotnik. The player has to hit the Eggman Mobile eight times to defeat this boss.
Drill Eggman II is mostly an upgraded Eggman Mobile with two drills (colored yellow with red stripes) and a rocket under it. In the 2013 mobile re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, it is possible to skip this boss in regular gameplay if the player instead falls into Hidden Palace Zone.
The player encounters the boss vehicle on an empty hallway, where no one is seen. When the battle begins, the screen rumbles, round and spiky rocks fall from the ceiling and Robotnik himself arrives with his upgraded Eggman Mobile with two drills. Unlike previous counterpart, this machine actually drills. When the rocks start falling down, the player must dodge the spiky ones as they can damage the player when touched. After arriving, Robotnik will drill though the ceiling with his drills in a vertical position. He will then shift his drills in a horizontal position and attempt to ram into Sonic/Tails. After this, he will return into the ceiling and the process will start over, repeating the pattern again.
The player has to also avoid touching the drill and motor parts of the vehicle and attack when Robotnik is not pointing them in the vertical position. Like all bosses in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Drill Eggman II takes eight hits to be defeated and the player can then head to the Capsule.
Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog
In the pilot episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Robotnik uses a drill tank to dig underground to catch Sonic but fails when Tails grabs Robotnik, sending him out of control. It also appears in the episode "Lovesick Sonic" it was renamed the Egg-o-Matic Tunnelizer and Town Terrorizer.
