Echidnas (ハリモグラ科 Harimogura-ka?) are creatures that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a race of anthropomorphic animals on earth that can be recognized by their reddish fur and dreadlock-like spikes.

Approximately 3,000 years ago, the echidnas thrived as a clan known as the Knuckles Clan in what would become the Mystic Ruins. After incurring the wrath of Chaos however, much of the Knuckles Clan was wiped out. Following the containment of Chaos in the Master Emerald, the echidnas of the Knuckles Clan took up residence on Angel Island and assumed the duty of guarding the Master Emerald.[1] Following that though, the echidnas seemingly entered terminal decline; in the present day, only one living descendant of the Knuckles Clan, and of the echidna race in its entirety, remains: Knuckles the Echidna.[2][3][4] While maintaining his duty, Knuckles has also participated in the ongoing conflicts outside of Angel Island, and has played a vital role in preventing many catastrophes.

Description[]

Anatomy[]

Echidnas are anthropomorphic animals with humanoid physiques and long spine-like quills referred to dreadlocks[2] that hang from around their heads. They are also shown to get no more than little over a meter tall when it comes to average height. Other features they all share include peach-skinned muzzles with black noses, wide eyes and tri-crooked tails. In addition, they have fur in various red hues, such as regular red, reddish-pink, dark red, and orange-peach.

Characteristics and culture[]

Approximately 3,000 years ago, the echidnas of the Knuckles Clan wore certain attires and body decorations. The men of the Knuckles Clan sported white, intricate tattoos all over their bodies, especially on their heads, torsos and arms. When it came to attire, the men wore gloves similar to those worn by Knuckles. The men were also the only members of their clan to possess spiky protrusions/knuckles on their gloves, along with open sandals and blue bracelets on their ankles. In addition, some of the men wore golden necklaces with blue jewels embedded in them. The male chieftains would wear gloves, sandals and bracelets like the the men as well, but with additional accessories, such as ornaments with feathers and more decorative bracelets.

Little is known about the common dress code for female echidnas. If Tikal can be used as a representative, it can be assumed that female echidnas wore many ornaments and clothes rich with details. Gold necklaces, pendants and other ornaments were a common part of Tikal's attire. Other pieces of attire Tikal wore included a tank top, a patterned skirt and white bandages wrapped around her lower legs and dreadlocks. Like the men though, she also wore blue bracelets and sandals. Unlike the males though, Tikal wore five-fingered gloves.

The snake evidently held a prominent position in the culture of the echidnas from the Knuckles Clan, who incorporated sculptures of the animal's head into the architecture of the shrine of Knuckles's race and pillars, but not in everyday folks' homes. Many of the doors inside and out of the shrine in particular were in the shape of a fanged snake's mouth, and a mechanism in Lost World was designed like a moving stone snake. All of these designs were very detailed, as well as the eyes of the snake-doors and entrance to the Altar of Emerald itself. The Knuckles Clan also possessed lore and knowledge about the power of the Chaos Emeralds and Master Emerald, which best came in the form of an ancient mantra that has been passed down across generations.[5]

In terms of political organization, the echidnas of the Knuckles Clan was ruled by a chiefdom, with the ruler being determined by kinship and inherited between the ruling family's generations.[1] There was no democracy, and the chief had unlimited authority over their clan. Before the time of Pachacamac though, the Knuckles Clan was a moderate tribe of mere fighting ruffians.[1] After Pachacamac rose to chiefdom however, the Knuckles Clan was transformed into a powerful warring force of warriors and bandits[1] who came to literally worship Pachacamac.[6][6][7] However, the Knuckles Clan's era of prosperity under Pachacamac's rule made the clansmen arrogant,[7] eventually to the point that they forewent their old beliefs and sought to dominate the world with sacred powers for their own selfish reasons.[8] After their downfall at the hands of Chaos though, the Knuckles Clan was humbled and took up more righteous duties by safeguarding the Master Emerald so that the tragedy involving Chaos could never be repeated.[1]

Powers and abilities[]

The echidnas of the Knuckles Clan were an impressive warring force that could subjugate entire countries,[1] suggesting they possessed exceptionally high physical prowess and/or fighting skills. As demonstrated by Knuckles and Tikal, the echidnas are also able to glide through midair using their dreadlocks.[2] Similarly, they are also skilled climbers and burrowers, especially with the spikes on their knuckles. The echidnas might even possess superhuman skills, as shown by Knuckles, who possesses strength, speed, durability, reflexes and agility on a superhuman level, along with many other abilities, such as limited geokinesis, sensitivity to energy signatures like Chaos Emerald energy, and utilization of the Chaos Emeralds. However, those abilities might just be unique to Knuckles.

History[]

Past[]

Approximately 3,000 years ago,[1] the Knuckles Clan of echindas lived in what would become Mystic Ruins. This village housed a great shrine in its center, and was located near the Altar of Emerald, which was occupied by Chaos, a Chao colony, and their sacred emeralds.

During that period, the Knuckles Clan was but one of several nations caught up in the local warlords' rivalry.[1] Around that time, Grandma led the clan,[9] who was of a politically moderate faction and the mother of Pachacamac.[1] Under her leadership, the Knuckles Clan remained a small country of mere fighting ruffians.[1][9] Meanwhile, Pachacamac yearned to expand the Knuckles Clan's kingdom.[9] Regardless, Grandma's ways learned her the love of her granddaughter, Tikal, the daughter of Pachacamac.[9] and she taught Tikal her clan's legends surrounding the Chao, the Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds, including an old mantra.[5]

After Grandma died, Pachacamac took over the clan.[1][9] Under his leadership, Pachacamac transformed the Knuckles Clan into a powerful warring force[1] with which he launched successful attacks on the surrounding countries, stealing and killing along the way.[10] In no time at all, the Knuckles Clan suppressed their rival kingdoms and took control of everything within view.[1][6] The Knuckles Clan's warmongering led to an era of prosperity for their country.[9][11] However, this was not enough for the Knuckles Clan, who dreamt of controlling the world.[8] Pachacamac in particular was far from satisfied.[1] Justifying that it was for the survival of his people,[10] Pachacamac sought to steal the Chaos Emeralds enshrined in the Altar of Emerald to further expand the echidnas' power.[1] However, all of the Knuckles Clan's attempts to steal the Chaos Emeralds were thwarted by a strange force.[1][11] As such, the Altar of Emerald remained the one area in the vicinity that Knuckles Clan could not take control of.[6]

While the majority of the Knuckles Clan supported Pachacamac for the wealth and power he had given them,[6][7] the pacificist Tikal severely opposed her father's warmongering.[1][9][10] However, she could not change his mind.[1][10]

Eventually, Tikal came across the Chao at the Altar of Emerald, where she met Chaos. After the creature befriended Tikal, Chaos let her see the Master Emerald in its altar.[1] Soon after though, Pachacamac sought to invade the Altar of Emerald one more time and take the Chaos Emeralds.[1][12] Tikal warned Chaos of the coming attack, but could not convince Chaos and the Chao to leave their altar.[13]

SAdventure-Knuckles-Clan-Raid

Despite Tikal's efforts for a peaceful resolution, Pachacamac soon launched a violent attack on the Altar of Emerald with his fellow echidnas from the Knuckles Clan. During their invasion however, Tikal and the native Chao stood in the clan's way. Pachacamac, however, ignored Tikal's pleas and had his men trample over Tikal and the Chao. This profound act of indiscrimination incurred the wrath of Chaos, corrupting it with anger. In retaliation, Chaos transformed into Perfect Chaos using the negative energy of the Chaos Emeralds and annihilated Pachacamac and his men. Chaos proceeded to go on a rampage, laying waste to the Knuckles Clan civilization and wiped out nearly the whole clan overnight. Before Chaos could destroy the rest of the world though, Tikal used her ancient prayer in conjunction with the Master Emerald to seal Chaos inside of the Master Emerald along with herself.[1]

Having taken a devastating blow from Chaos's attack, the surviving echidnas of the Knuckles Clan, now humbled by this incident, used the Master Emerald's power to suspend the Emeralds' altar area into the sky, creating Angel Island. There, the Knuckles Clan would live, bearing the duty of observing and protecting the Master Emerald, so that an incident with Chaos would never happen again. The clan also left murals and inscriptions in their destroyed temple to communicate this incident to future generations.[1]

Over the the next three millennia, the Knuckles Clan apparently upheld their vow to protect the Master Emerald. However, the Knuckles Clan seemingly entered terminal decline over the years, eventually leaving them with only one descendant left to guard the Master Emerald: Knuckles the Echidna.[3][4] However, Knuckles' own past was a mystery to him; he knew nothing of how he came to be, his ancestral roots, or even the details of the Master Emerald he was supposed to protect.[14][15] Despite this, he chose to remain on Angel Island and spent his life guarding the Master Emerald, never questioning it.[14][15]

Knuckles's ambush

Knuckles meeting Sonic the Hedgehog for the first time, from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

After the West Side Island incident, Knuckles was guarding Angel Island and its content when the Death Egg crashed into the island. He soon after met Dr. Robotnik. Needing someone to keep Sonic the Hedgehog off his back while he rebuilt the Death Egg, Robotnik deceived Knuckles by telling him that Sonic was coming to steal the Master Emerald.[16][17] As such, when Sonic and Tails arrived, Knuckles would constantly interfere with their mission to destroy the Death Egg. Eventually, Knuckles fought Sonic in Hidden Palace Zone. Upon being defeated however, Knuckles realized Robotnik's deceit when he escaped with the Master Emerald to use it to power his Death Egg. As such, Knuckles helped Sonic and Tails along on their way to stop Robotnik, but was soon too tired to continue onward himself. Regardless, Sonic and Tails got the Master Emerald back to Knuckles. Soon after though, Knuckles went after a EggRobo, which led him to discover that the Master Emerald had been stolen by Mecha Sonic Mk. II. Defeating Mecha Sonic Mk. II, Knuckles got the Master Emerald back to Angel Island with aid from Sonic.

Knuckles facing Chaos

Knuckles meeting Chaos, from Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.

Eventually, the Knuckles Clan's actions from 3,000 years ago came back to haunt the world when Dr. Robotnik learned about Chaos from a stone tablet made by the Knuckles Clan that he found while excavating the Mystic Ruins.[1] Hoping to harness Chaos' power for his own needs, Robotnik undid Tikal's sacrifice by releasing Chaos from the Master Emerald and seeking to restore it to full power with the Chaos Emeralds. However, Chaos' heart was still hollow from anger due to the Knuckles Clan's attack on its altar, and so went along with Robotnik in hopes of regaining its full power and destroying the world as it intended.[1] Meanwhile, due to the Master Emerald's shattering, Knuckles went in search of its Emerald Shards, which had scattered far and wide, in order to restore the Master Emerald. After several trials and entanglements with Sonic and Dr. Robotnik's conflict, Knuckles successfully repaired the Master Emerald. Unbeknownst to everyone else, Tikal's soul was unexpectedly freed from the Master Emerald as well when Robotnik released Chaos and sought to have Chaos resealed in the Master Emerald again. However, since she lacked a corporeal form to do this directly,[1] she instead appeared before Sonic's and his allies who were involved with Chaos or the Chaos Emeralds, assisting them and trying to make them do it on her behalf by showing them visions of the Knuckles Clan's past and their relation to Chaos, hoping that they would understand her intent.[1] In the end though, Chaos became Perfect Chaos and brought massive destruction upon Station Square in its rage. It was then that Tikal appeared before Sonic and opted to reseal Chaos again. However, Sonic refused, knowing that it would not undo the anger in Chaos' heart. After Knuckles and the others brought Sonic the Chaos Emeralds though, Sonic became Super Sonic. With this form, Sonic defeated Perfect Chaos and neutralized the anger in its heart, finally ending the threat that the Knuckles Clan's actions had brought upon the world. After that, Tikal left with Chaos for places unknown.

Following this crisis, Knuckles would get involved in a lot of incidents where he would join Sonic's side to foil the later ambitions of Dr. Robotnik, who would from then on carry the alias "Eggman".

Extradimensional echidnas also appeared to support Sonic; when the World Ring incident came around, the echidna Sinbad the Sailor from the world of the Arabian Nights got captured by the Erazor Djinn, but was later saved by Sonic and Shahra, whom he would give the Water Blue Ring. During the scabbard of Excalibur incident that took place in the world of Camelot, Sir Gawain of the Knights of the Round Table was tasked by King Arthur to seek out and kill the hedgehog and Merlina. When he found Sonic however, he was defeated by him, who kept him from committing suicide out of shame and took his Galatine. When Merlina later betrayed the hero and began enacting a plan that would destroy their kingdom however, Gawain and his fellow knights teamed up with Sonic and helped him stop the sorceress. Additionally, sometime in the past set before the Chaos incident, Knuckles would join forces with a Sonic to stop Dr. Eggman from getting ahold of the Phantom Ruby.

Knuckles and Silver see Pachacamac's village materialize in front of them, from Sonic Forces: Stress Test.

In the months before the War to Take Back the Planet, Knuckles was on Angel Island when Silver showed up to warn him of something. No sooner though, Dr. Eggman would use the Phantom Ruby to create a physical illusion of Pachacamac's village and its echidna inhabitants on the island. When the illusion later vanished, Knuckles was told by the white hedgehog that a catastrophe would soon hit. The echidna thus went with Silver to warn everyone and lead a Resistance against it.[18] Much later, the War to Take Back the Planet broke out, with Knuckles himself assuming leadership over the Resistance opposing the Eggman Empire and its army, which held the world in an iron grip. Under his leadership, and with the aid of various allies, the heroes were successful in liberating the world from the doctor's rule. Soon after, back in the past, Knuckles would cross paths with Sonic once again.

Other game appearances[]

Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood[]

In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, it is said that 4,000 years ago, the echidna race was split into two warring clans: the Knuckles Clan and the Nocturnus Clan. The Nocturnus Clan was more technologically advanced, possessing powerful combat robots named Gizoids. Desperate to defeat the Nocturnus Clan, Pachacamac ordered a raid on the Altar of Emerald in an attempt to gain the power of the Chaos Emeralds. However, the altar was also home to Chao, who were trampled in the raid. This caused Chaos, the Chao's guardian, to go berserk and eradicate much of the Knuckles Clan. Tikal, however, used her special prayer to plead the Master Emerald to stop Chaos. Subsequently, the Master Emerald sealed Tikal and Chaos inside itself, and its energy continued to expand into the surrounding area as well as much of the Knuckles Clan's territory, causing the landmass to rise into the sky, becoming Angel Island.

Nocturnus Warriors

A troop of Nocturnus Clan echidna warriors, from Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.

The Nocturnus Clan were unable to take full advantage of the Knuckles Clan's weakness, however, as they soon mysteriously disappeared before completely colonizing the entire world, brought into the Twilight Cage apparently by a being known as Argus. Only Emerl, their most powerful Gizoid, was left behind. Inside the Twilight Cage, the Nocturnus Clan forced themselves to adapt and evolve in order to not only survive in their new home, but also conquer it. Meanwhile, the surviving Knuckles Clan echidnas on Angel Island vowed to guard the Master Emerald and keep it out of harm's way in order to ensure that Chaos would never be released.. Four thousand years later, Knuckles the Echidna becomes the last living descendant of the Knuckles Clan, protecting the Master Emerald with his life.

During the events of the game, the Nocturnus Clan had found a way to temporarily leave the Twilight Cage using Warp Belts. They then began a plan that would bring Angel Island to them using the Chaos Emerald so they could steal the Master Emerald from it and use its power to open a wormhole out of the Twilight Cage and get back to earth. Meanwhile, after discovering the identity of the Nocturnus Clan, Knuckles would struggle with how he had to fight his own kind after being the only echinda alive for his entire life.

When the Nocturnus Clan's leader, Imperator Ix, was on the cusp of stealing the Master Emerald, he revealed his intention to conquer the world upon his clan's return to earth. This prompted his lieutenant, Shade the Echidna, to speak against this, as she only wanted her people out of the Twilight Cage. In response, Ix tried to kill her, but she was saved by Knuckles. After Ix got away with the Master Emerald and opened his wormhole, Shade teamed up with Sonic, Knuckles and their team to stop's Ix's plans. With Shade's guidance, the heroes were able to make their through the Twilight Cage after heading in there themselves to stop Ix, fighting echidna soldiers from the Nocturnus Clan along the way. When Knuckles and Shade later stood face to face with Ix during their final showdown, Ix tried persuading Knuckles to join his clan. Knuckles refused however, opting to help his kind his own way. After Sonic had defeated Ix though, Ix began closing the wormhole out of the Twilight Cage, but the heroes made it out of there just in time.

Despite her efforts to dissuade her clan from stealing the Emeralds, Pachacamac and his men went through with the raid anyway, only to incur the wrath of Chaos, who the Chaos Emeralds to destroy Pachacamac and his men and attack the rest of the Knuckles Clan until Tikal sealed it in the Master Emerald with her.

Books and comics[]

Sonic Adventures[]

In the Sonic Adventures comics, the echidnas are the descendants of Mobius' first race. A savage people, they have left cities in ruins on all continents. Currently, they reside in a magnificent city in a forbidden zone, and are led by Princess Alucion.

Brotherhood & Grandmasters

Various historical echidnas, from Sonic the Hedgehog #183.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic book series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the echidnas were one of the most technologically advanced race of mobians on Mobius. They established themselves as a civilized and advanced society centuries before the other species on the planet after the Xorda Attack on Earth. The echidnas were formally located in two primary locations: Echidnaopolis on Angel Island, and Albion in Eurish. Tragically, after the mass genocide committed by the Dingo Regime under Kage Von Stryker's rule, and the complete destruction of Albion by the Eggman Empire, only ten percent of the world's echidnas have been left. The vast majority subsequently disappeared from Mobius due to a vendetta pursued by the last mobian Tasmanian Devil, Thrash, leaving only a handful in other locations.

After the Super Genesis Wave rewrote history, the echidnas' history became virtually identical to their game counterparts'.

Sonic the Comic[]

Echidnaempire

Various members of the Echidna Empire, from Sonic the Comic #180. Art by Richard Elson.

In the Sonic the Comic series published by Fleetway Editions, the ancient echidnas would establish a technologically advanced civilization known as the Echidna Empire 8,000 years in the past (hunting the Kohenyus to extinction in the process) based in Megopolis City. This would be lost when the alien Drakon Empire invaded, looting the echidnas' sacred emerald mines and using the emeralds within as a source for their unstable chaos energy, intending to manufacture thousands of Chaos Emeralds and conquer the galaxy with them. Only seven were created, at which point the echidnas under Pochacamac stole them; the Great War between the echidnas and Drakons broke out soon after.

In the present day, the echidnas have all disappeared and nobody knows what happened to them. The Floating Island is covered with crumbling ruins - Megopolis, a few Zones such as Sandopolis Zone, the ancient portals to the Special Zone and the Emerald Chamber, where the Chaos Emeralds reside. The main relics of this time are the Chaos Emeralds, the ancient Guardian Robots, and the ancient computer systems that control the path of the Floating Island, maintain its forcefield, and in times of real danger can fire energy blasts at enemies.

Knuckles is one of the only two living echidnas; originally, he lived as a warrior in the ancient past, fighting against the Drakons, but through means unknown he lives in the present as the guardian of the Chaos Emeralds and has no memory of his past or his lost people. The other surviving echidna is Dr. Zachary, an evil and aged cyborg misanthrope who wants to destroy the Floating Island and Mobius, but his origins are unclear.
