You may be looking for the first boss of Sonic Unleashed, the Egg Beetle.

The Egg Beetle[1] is an enemy that appears in Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. It is a robot model implemented as a part of the Egg Quarters' security system, programmed to patrol the base and destroy any intruders.

Appearance

An Egg Beetle in charging mode.

As the name implies, the Egg Beetles resemble extremely large beetles. They have a round grey body with a dark grey underbelly, two outspread elytra and two rockets on their rear for propulsion. They also have a blue and yellow light on the front, two small insectoid forearms and two skids for legs.

In normal and targeting mode, the Egg Beetles' elytra glow red and their front light will be on. In charging mode however, their elytra glow in green and their front light is off.

Overview

The Egg Beetles can only be found in the Egg Quarters where two of them roam the hallways. These enemies are completely indestructible. Once an Egg Beetle detects the player, it sounds the alarm and tries relentlessly to close in on them. However, the Egg Beetle is slow, and thus easy to outrun. When close enough, it deploys drones that attack the player with lasers before fading away. Afterwards, the Egg Beetle enters charging mode, rendering it unable to attack for ten seconds, and repeats the cycle.

The Egg Bettles' only flaw is that they cannot see in the dark. If the playable characters hide in the shadows, they will be protected from being detected by the Egg Beetles.

Powers and abilities

The Egg Beetle's Laser shot.

The Egg Beetles are capable of (slow-paced) flight and have a built-in targeting system that let them detect enemies from afar. When dealing with intruders, they deploy several floating drones resembling Eggman's face which can shoot deadly lasers.

Trivia

  • If the player attacks an Egg Beetle, it will immediately attack without any warning, even if they were hiding in a shadow.
  • Oddly, the Egg Beetles were only implemented in Egg Quarters and not in Death Chamber, which was also located inside the Hidden Base. Either the Egg Quarters are in a different room, or the developers felt that the Egg Beetles would not fit with the Death Chamber's theme.
  • In the original Dreamcast version, when the Egg Beetles enter an area, the screen will pulse green faster and faster the closer they gets to Rouge then slower when they move away. However, in all subsequent re-releases of Sonic Adventure 2, the screen simply flashes green until they are gone.

If it finds you, it'll tag you with its lasers, so if it gets near you, take cover in the shadows! Don't panic when the screen starts flashing red, just find a shadowy place to hide."
