Ignoring the name, it's an underwater Egg Flapper.

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Sea Pawn[1] (エッグダイバー[2] Eggu Daibā?, lit. "Egg Diver") is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, Pawn Series Badnik model created by Dr. Eggman, and an underwater variant of the Flapper.

Appearance[]

The Sea Pawns, like the Flappers, look very similar to the Egg Pawn, possessing the round torso, black undercarriage, and dome-shaped head that the Egg Pawns have. However, Sea Pawns have airplane-like wings instead of arms, and two turbines with wings/fins on their backs that propel them around underwater instead of legs. Additionally, while they have the Egg Pawns' pointy nose and panel-based mouth, they have blue diver goggles instead of eyes. In terms of color scheme, the Sea Pawns are green with yellow-orange details.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Rush[]

EggDiversprite

The Sea Pawns made their first appearance in Sonic Rush as an enemy. In this game, they only appear in Water Palace.

Sea Pawns

Sea Pawns in Sonic Rush.

In gameplay, Sea Pawns only appear in the underwater sections of Water Palace where they usually move back and forth slowly within a designated area. In other cases, they are completely stationary. Sea Pawns possess no form of attack, but they can damage a careless player in case they run into an Sea Pawn. Other than that, they are easily destroyed with either the Spin Jump/Axel Jump or the Super Boost/Fire Boost (depending on their position underwater). Additionally, they can also be destroyed with an Underwater Mine. Also, upon their destruction, they release an Animal.

Sonic Generations[]

Green Flapper (Stationary)

A stationary Sea Pawn in Water Palace Act 2, from the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations.

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, Sea Pawns from somewhere across spacetime appear as enemies in both Acts of Water Palace.

In gameplay, Sea Pawns only appear underneath the water sections in Water Palace. Like in Sonic Rush, Sea Pawns float in rare cases in stationary positions. The rest of them move left and right within a designated area. In either case, they do not attack the player.

Green Flapper (Large 3)

The giant Sea Pawn in Water Palace Act 1 in Sonic Generations.

In Water Palace Act 1, a larger version of the Sea Pawn appears during the final underwater section of the Act. This Sea Pawn engages Classic Sonic from behind the wall; by ramming into the wall, it can make small blocks of bricks fall at Classic Sonic which can damage him should they make contact. After reaching the end of this section, this giant Sea Pawn will ram at the wall in order to damage Classic Sonic directly, causing the wall to break apart and leaving the Sea Pawn itself immobilized. When this happens, the player must aim their Spin Attack/Homing Attack at its head to destroy it. This will make the blocks of bricks in front of the player collapse and create an opening to proceed through.

Powers and abilities[]

The Sea Pawns are uniquely designed to operate and move around underwater. Larger Sea Pawns also possess enough strength to bring down thick brick walls.
