Muhahaha... you fools must all have a death wish? Witness this invincible battleship, built by the hands of a genius. Its power... unmatched throughout the universe!

"Dr. Eggman", Sonic Heroes

The Egg Fleet (エッグフリート Eggu Furīto?), also known as the Eggman Fleet[1] (エッグマン艦隊 Egguman Kantai?), is a subject that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is an immense armada of flying battleships created by Dr. Eggman for the purpose of helping him take over the world. Bristling with guns, cannons and robot armies, the Egg Fleet has been occasionally times to establish the Eggman Empire's dominance.

Description[]

Appearance[]

All iterations of the Egg Fleet consist of an inmense armada of giant warships that are either aircraft of spacecraft. These vessels have varying shapes and the Eggman Empire's insignia everywhere. Also accompanying the fleet are floating platforms housing cannons.

Features of defenses[]

Being such a titanic fleet, the Egg Fleet is capable of flight and is said to boast unmatched power throughout Sonic's universe.[2] All of its vessels are equipped with a plethora of weaponry, including massive cannons for firing explosives and lasers, as well as hordes of Badniks that control it.[3]

History[]

Sonic Heroes[]

EggFleet SonicHeroes

The Egg Fleet having been launched, from Sonic Heroes.

In Sonic Heroes, the Egg Fleet was created by Dr. Eggman, who wanted to use it for his own gain. However, when Neo Metal Sonic took over the Eggman Empire, the fleet fell under his rule and began to be used for the treacherous robot's plan to establish a robot kingdom encompassing the entire world.

The armada first appeared to Team Sonic when they defeated the Egg Albatross, where it was flying away from somewhere near the base. It turned out that the challenge letter Team Sonic had received three days earlier was a trap set for the team, so that the Egg Fleet could be launched without interference. After escaping the Hang Castle, Teams Sonic, Dark, Rose, and Chaotix would make their way through the minor warships, all the way to the central flag ship, the Final Fortress, where they confronted Neo Metal Sonic (disguised as Dr. Eggman) in the Egg Emperor.

After defeating the robot in disguise, Team Sonic managed to create a chain reaction that destroyed the majority of the Egg Fleet, thus foiling Neo Metal Sonic's plans with it. Shortly afterwards, however, Neo Metal Sonic destroyed a large portion of the Final Fortress in his attempt to transform into Metal Madness and fused to the flag ship. He later detached from the flag ship as Metal Overlord, and during the battle with Team Sonic, he would snatch the debris of the destroyed Egg Fleet.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

In Shadow the Hedgehog, the Egg Fleet, now known as the "Eggman Fleet", was deployed by Dr. Eggman to counter the destructive actions of the Black Arms, as otherwise he would not be able to establish the Eggman Empire.[1] However, the fleet was met with resistance from the aliens' own warships, which the doctor's empire proceeded to fight in the sky. Getting caught in the crossfire, Shadow would go through the battle zone to find the fifth Chaos Emerald.

Sonic Unleashed[]

In the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed, a cosmic Egg Fleet was mobilized by Dr. Eggman. Its real purpose was to deceive Sonic the Hedgehog into thinking that the doctor was planning to conquer the world to guard his Chaos Energy Cannon, which he built to shatter the earth and release Dark Gaia. The Egg Fleet was eventually boarded by Sonic and partly decimated by his Super Sonic form in his subsequent battle with his nemesis.

Sonic Generations[]

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, as a side-effect of the Time Eater's time-traveling, a version of the Egg Fleet's Final Fortress from somewhere in spacetime got transported to White Space where it was drained of color and life.

Eventually, Modern Sonic boarded the Final Fortress near the end of his adventure with Classic Sonic. There, he fought against Dr. Eggman in the Egg Emperor. Despite not having the rest of his team to rely on, the hedgehog defeated the mech on his own and got one of the final Chaos Emeralds.

Sonic Forces[]

In Sonic Forces, the Egg Fleet was deployed by Dr. Eggman on various occasions during the War to Take Back the Planet to counter the Resistance.

Team Sonic Racing[]

In Team Sonic Racing, the Egg Fleet's Final Fortress served as Dr. Eggman's main base.

Sonic Frontiers[]

In Sonic Frontiers, Dr. Eggman threatened The End with attacking it using the Egg Fleet. However, he ultimately did not do so when Sage suggested that his efforts would fail.

Other game appearances[]

Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing[]

The Egg Fleet's main airship, the Final Fortress, appears in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, where three courses took place, including Turbine Loop, Dark Arsenal, and Thunder Deck.

Layouts[]

Sonic Heroes[]

The Egg Fleet contained the following ships in Sonic Heroes. With the notable exception of Final Fortress (Which is labeled as the Whale Shark Flagship and Final Fortress by Team Chaotix's mysterious client and the game itself, respectively), the ship's names are not official, but instead nicknames given due to its shape.

  • Mako gunship - A red ship shaped like a mako shark. It was the basic ship of the fleet and was armed with a battery of cannons.
  • Sawfish battleship - A formidable ship, larger and more heavily armed than the gunships and shaped like a blue sawfish. In the background of the Egg Fleet stage, it shows that one battleship leads a group of five gunships. They can be destroyed by spinning into their internal mechanisms, causing the bridge to self-destruct.
  • Manta ray ship - A giant purple ship in the shape of a manta ray. Though they are battle ships of similar function as the other ships, none of the characters actually board any of these ships. Their size is unknown, but is assumed to be greater than the sawfish ships.
  • Final Fortress - This massive ship is the flagship of the Egg Fleet. It is in the shape of a whale shark and is much larger than any of Eggman's previous flying fortresses. The Final Fortress is heavily armed, and can have easily been the equivalent of the rest of the fleet in size and armament.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

In Shadow the Hedgehog, the Egg Fleet contained a much less diverse selection of battleship than in Sonic Heroes, with basically only two types of ships appearing.

  • Minor Battleships - The most commonly seen battleships of the Egg Fleet in Shadow the Hedgehog. These battleships are very similar to the Mako shark gunships from Sonic Heroes, sharing similar designs. They have a primarily red color scheme with stripes of yellow across the side. As mentioned above, the battleships have a more streamlined design, thus they lack any passageway across the ship and have only one row of cannons, unlike the Mako shark gunships. The size of each of these ships differ between each other.
  • Central Battleship - The central battleship of the Eggman Fleet in Shadow the Hedgehog and the largest seen so far. In terms of shape, this massive battleship resembles the Egg Carrier from Sonic Adventure, but with a more stream-like shape. It spots a red and yellow color scheme, and is heavily armored. At the bottom of the ship, there are large turrets that can fire large bullets with destructive power.

Sonic Unleashed[]

In Sonic Unleashed, the layout of this Egg Fleet was very similar to the one in Shadow the Hedgehog, with only few types of battleships present and not in incredibly large numbers. This time, however, its ships had a smoother design and possessed a greater number of armaments.

  • Minor Battleships - The most commonly seen battleships of the Egg Fleet in Sonic Unleashed. These grey battleships had vaguely the same shape as the Mako shark gunships from Sonic Heroes, but lacked the ship stabilizers and their bridges were raised on a platform of their own with a satellite dish on top. They also featured several more gun turrets and cannons.
  • Central Battleship - The central battleship of the Egg Fleet in Sonic Unleashed and the largest seen so far. This red battleship was basically a much larger version of the minor battleships with extra large engines and was much more heavily armed and had an army of Egg Fighters at Eggman's disposal.

Sonic Forces[]

In Sonic Forces, the layout of this Egg Fleet only had three types of battleships present, but in incredibly large numbers. This time, its ships had a smoother design and possessed many more armaments. Their designs also greatly resembled those they had in Sonic Unleashed.

  • Minor Battleships - The most commonly seen battleships of the Egg Fleet in Sonic Forces. These battleships had vaguely the same shape as the Mako shark gunships from Sonic Heroes.
  • Major Battleships - The major battleships of the Egg Fleet in Sonic Forces. These battleships had vaguely the same shape as the massive battleship in Shadow the Hedgehog but lacks in a more stream-like shape.
  • Central Battleship - The central battleship of the Egg Fleet in Sonic Forces. The Ship resembles the Sky Fortress.

Archie Comics[]

The Egg Fleet, from Sonic the Hedgehog #173.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the Egg Fleet was constructed by Dr. Eggman, meant to be the mad doctor's ultimate weapon against his enemies and a vital key in his conquest of Mobius. During its time, the fleet had many successes, such as eliminating the rogue A.D.A.M., the Destruction of Knothole and much more. However, the Egg Fleet was destroyed in battle by an enraged Enerjak.

After the events of Worlds Collide, the Egg Fleet's history is now virtually identical to its game counterpart.

When the Black Arms invaded, the Egg Fleet was deployed by Dr. Eggman to combat the alien menace.[4] In the past, when Neo Metal Sonic rebelled against Dr. Eggman to conquer the world for himself, he took control of all of the Eggman Empire's forces, including the Egg Fleet.[5] Later on, at the Egg Fleet's flagship armada, the Final Fortress, Neo fought against Sonic and his friends using the Egg Emperor, but was defeated.[6]

The Fate of Dr. Eggman and Big's Big Adventure[]

IDWEggFleet

The Egg Fleet, from Sonic the Hedgehog #7.

The Egg Fleet was eventually revived and brought into position by Neo Metal Sonic, who had taken over as leader of the Eggman Empire, so it could help him invade Angel Island.[4][5] While heading out on an Egg Fleet flagship to join up with the rest of fleet however, Neo Metal Sonic got a surprise visit from Sonic the Hedgehog when the hedgehog infiltrated his flagship in hopes of downloading some data onto the Miles Electric that could tell him who was commanding the Badniks. While Neo Metal Sonic, disguised as Dr. Eggman, found Sonic, the blue hedgehog did not by Neo Metal Sonic's disguise, as he had already met the real amnesiac Dr. Eggman back in Windmill Village, thus forcing Neo Metal Sonic to reveal his true form. Once he learned that Neo Metal Sonic was up to no good, Sonic tried to defeat his robot double. However, he was forced to flee the ship after Neo Metal Sonic acquired his abilities. During this scuffle, Big the Cat took a look around at the front of the ship in search of Froggy.[7] As Sonic fled, Neo Metal Sonic tried incapacitating Sonic with his ship's artillery and Egg Pawns, but Sonic destroyed them all before escaping on the Tornado. With his ship crippled, Neo Metal Sonic chose to focus on his original plan. Soon after, the entire Egg Fleet had surrounded Angel Island's airspace.[5]

After taking over Angel Island and obtaining the Master Emerald, Neo Metal Sonic had the Egg Fleet safeguard the island from the air. He also had two massive wing units with Egg Fleet vessels embedded in them attached to Angel Island's shoreline.[8]

Battle For Angel Island[]

When a Battleship carrying Sonic and his allies approached the now-heavily fortified Angel Island, the Egg Fleet opened fired upon it. Despite being able to destroy the Battleship, all its passagers managed to evacuate it in time. The Egg Fleet vessels on Angel Island's artificial wing units then came under attack by Sonic's allies, including Burning Blaze, who sought to break the fleet's control over Angel Island.[9]

TailsRamsOverlord

Tails rams an Egg Fleet ship into Master Overlord, from Sonic the Hedgehog #11.

As the battle progressed, Sonic's allies managed to leave their mark on the Egg Fleet vessels on Angel Island's wing units, although they did not make a lot of headway. Eventually though, Burning Blaze used the remainder of her power to destroy Angel Island's left wing unit and all the Egg Fleet vessels on them. In the meantime, Tails and Silver managed to hijack an Egg Fleet battleship, which they used to destroy Angel Island's last wing unit and its Egg Fleet vessels. The heroes subsequently regrouped on the Egg Fleet battleship Tails had hijacked.[10] Master Overlord soon after went after said Egg Fleet battleship in order to crush the Resistance members and allies that were onboard it. Despite Tails' effort to shoot down Master Overlord with the battleship's artillery, the giant robot made it to the battleship. Fortunately, he got distracted by Sonic, thus allowing the heroes onboard the battleship to launch a full-on assault on Master Overlord. When Master Overlord attempted to kill his friends however, Tails rammed the Egg Fleet battleship into Master Overlord, crippling the robot and giving Knuckles the opportunity to remove Master Overlord's power source. The Egg Fleet battleship subsequently crashed on Angel Island. Fortunately, Tails made it out of it alive.[11]

Despite dealing with the "notoriously weird" Eggman tech, Tails eventually got the Egg Fleet battleship he had crashed into Master Overlord up and running again, although he had his doubts that it could land safely. With it, Tails got everyone onboard the battleship off Angel Island.[12]
