It's a trap! This will damage you.

— Description, Sonic Mania

The Eggman Mark[1] (エッグマントラップ[2] Egguman Torappu?, lit. "Eggman Trap"), also known as Robotnik[3] or Eggman (エッグマン[4][5][6] Egguman?), is an Item Box power-up that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. When obtained, it damages the player.

Description[]

The Eggman Mark is known to have the smiling face of Dr. Eggman on its monitor's screen. When breaking its monitor, it will cause the player to take damage, resulting in the loss of either a shield, Rings or even a life, should the player not have any Rings on them at the time. However, it does not have any effect if the player is invincible or in a Super State.

Game appearances[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]

RobotnikStH216Bit

In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, this power-up is referred to as Doctor Eggman[7] (エッグマンマーク[8] Egguman Māku?, lit. "Eggman Mark") or simply Eggman (エッグマン[4] Egguman?). It only appears in the 2 Player VS mode. During gameplay in this mode, this monitor can only be obtained from Random monitors.

In the 2013 remaster of the game, the Eggman Marks can appear in the normal game using Debug Mode. They may also be randomly granted to the player from Random monitors.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles[]

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, and the lock-on game Sonic 3 & Knuckles, the Eggman Mark is referred to as Robotnik[3] (エッグマン[5] Egguman?, lit. "Eggman"). In these games, Robotnik monitors are rarer, but are set in inconsistent places. When broken in gameplay, they inflict damage to the player, but will do nothing to them if they are invincible or in their Super/Hyper State.

The first Robotnik monitor can be found in an underwater section of Hydrocity Zone Act 2 in a corner on top of a bed of spikes. The next two Robotnik monitors can be found in a cavern of IceCap Zone Act 2 (where their monitors are frozen in ice blocks), just before the player leaves the cavern by trampolines. Another three Robotnik monitors are found in Launch Base Zone Act 2, where two are set at the foot of a tunnel and a single one in a corner with a Super Ring monitor, where the player pops out the water pipe. These three Robotnik monitors only appear in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and are replaced with two Super Rings and an Invincibility when playing this Act in Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

In the Zones associated with Sonic & Knuckles, the next Robotnik monitor is found in Mushroom Hill Zone, which is right next to a Super Ring monitor, which hides a Spring beneath it. The next two are found in the second act of Lava Reef Zone, where they are set at the foot of a blocked, hidden entrance, which are placed near the main path. The last one can be found in Death Egg Zone Act 2, which is placed near an anti-gravity switch and right next to a Super Ring monitor.

Sonic Blast[]

EggmanTVBlast

In Sonic Blast, the Eggman Mark is simply known as Eggman (エッグマン[6] Egguman?) in Japanese sources. However, it is unnamed in western sources. They can be obtained from TVs, and at random chance from ??? TVs at times. In gameplay, the Eggmen do nothing when broken.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2013)[]

Tv eggman

In the 2013 remaster of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, the Eggman Marks appear as monitors that can only be placed through Debug Mode. When broken, it damages the playable character. However, these monitors do nothing if the player is invincible or in their Super State. The same monitor is present in the graphics of the original Mega Drive release, but it does nothing when broken.

Sonic Mania[]

The Eggman Mark Returns!

In Sonic Mania, and its expansion Sonic Mania Plus, the Eggman Marks[1] (エッグマントラップ[2] Egguman Torappu?, lit. "Eggman Trap") are Item Boxes with the face of Dr. Eggman. In gameplay, can be found in sporadic locations throughout Mania Mode and Encore Mode. They can also be placed in any Zone using Debug Mode. When broken, the Eggman Marks damage the playable character. However, these Item Boxes do nothing if the player is invincible or in their Super State.
