— Amy, CoroCoro Comics Special stories.

Amy (エイミー Eimī?) is one of the main characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog serialized manga published by Shogakukan. Amy is described as a sweet and innocent hedgehog, who lives in Hedgehog Town. She is always being taken by Anton Veruca to be forced to date him and kiss him at times. Amy is also the girlfriend of Nicky, who can transform into Sonic the Hedgehog when in danger or if Amy is taken from him.

Appearance

Amy is an anthropomorphic hedgehog whose appearance differs depending on which manga edition she is printed in. In the Shogaku Ninensei stories, Amy is brown, has a long chignon on top of her head and a red bow. She wears a yellow long-sleeved shirt with an "E" printed on it, a green dress, and red and white sneakers.

In Bessatsu CoroCoro Comics Special stories, Amy's appearance is closer to her game counterpart. She has a small fringe on her forehead and head quills similar to Nicky and Sonic's. She also wears a headband, white gloves, and sneakers with shoelaces, tips and soles. Her appearance in the Shogaku Gonensei stories is identical to one in the CoroCoro Comics Specials.

Personality

Amy is very gentle and cheerful like her boyfriend Nicky. However, she is also sensitively weak, making it easy for her to get captured by Anton Veruca or get into dangerous situations. Amy is usually seen dreaming of Sonic the Hedgehog after she is saved by him or just sees him. Since Amy is unaware that her boyfriend is Sonic, Nicky is often jealous of himself because Amy is seen falling in love with him every time she spots him. Nevertheless, Amy still loves Nicky and Nicky is happy that Amy is safe thanks to Sonic.

Name

Amy's name is extremely similar to her later counterparts, both in writing and pronunciation. However, comparing the two names shows a subtle difference in the katakana. In the manga, Amy's name is spelled with the katakana エイミー (Eimī), a Japanese transliteration of the English name "Amy", whereas the video game Amy's name is spelled エミー (Emī), a closer approximation of the Japanese word meaning smile (笑み emi?). The April 1992 issue of Shogaku Ninensei (by Sango Morimoto) introduces the character wearing a sweater with an 'E', matching Nicky's 'N', Anton Veruca's 'AB' and (later) Anita's 'T'.
