Emerl is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. He was a powerful Gizoid, who befriended Sonic the Hedgehog, but was destroyed during Dr. Eggman's schemes to control him.
History
Discovery and destruction
Emerl was discovered and modified by Gerald Robotnik, and later found again by his grandson Dr. Eggman. Eggman created his Phi robots based on Emerl, but later found a way to bend Emerl to his will. Before this, Emerl befriended Sonic and several of his allies, even becoming involved in a clash between Sonic and his friendly rival Knuckles.[1] Emerl later went out of control and threatened to destroy Sonic's World, but was halted by Sonic, regaining his senses shortly before meeting his demise.[2]
Legacy
Emerl's data was later recovered by Eggman and used to build another robot named Gemerl, who took up residence in Mobotropolis.[3][4]
Trivia
- Possibly due to the large role played in the Sonic X anime, Sega disapproved of Ian Flynn adding Emerl to the main Sonic the Hedgehog comic series. With the appearance of Emerl and Gemerl in the new continuity, it would seem this mandate has been lifted.
Notes
- ↑ 1.0 1.1 Head writer Ian Flynn has revealed on Twitter that Emerl's measurements are the same as those of his game counterpart.
