Super Sonic is a super form of Sonic the Hedgehog. He can assume this form by absorbing the power of seven Chaos Emeralds (or an equivalent power), and sometimes with the Power Rings. However, he can also achieve this form by using the Master Emerald and the Super Emeralds.
Being Sonic at his most powerful, Super Sonic has served as Sonic's trump card when fighting his most powerful adversaries or when facing situations that he cannot stop on his own, and has managed on several occasions to turn the tide of events in Sonic's favor.
Sonic the Hedgehog first transformed into Super Sonic when a rampaging robot known as the Universalamander ran havoc across Robotropolis and into the Great Forest. Realizing he was outmatched, Sonic quickly gathered the 7 Chaos Emeralds and 50 Power Rings needed to transform into Super Sonic. He quickly made short work of the roboticized beast, having quickly taken a shrinking device Rotor Walrus devised and shrank him to the point where he wasn't a threat anymore. (StH: #4)
Though Chaos Emeralds would come into play in later stages, Sonic would not take this form again until Sonic and Sally discovered a hidden Zone near a special lake. Taking advantage of it, Knuckles, who had learned of this Zone through a special book, dove into the Zone, seeking to take its Emeralds and rings so that he could help keep the Floating Island airborne should something happen to the one Emerald on the island. Not wanting to be outdone, the two rivals went at it, both of them turning Super Sonic and Hyper Knuckles and destroying the Zone in their fight. (SSvHK)
When Mammoth Mogul stole Enerjak's power and became Master Mogul, it was Athair who allowed the two former rivals, as well as Tails, to take their Super forms to defeat the would-be tyrant and seal him within the Master Emerald. (StH: #56)
When a weapon by Dr. Eggman, still as Robo Robotnik, used a weapon to throw the citizens of Knothole in reverse due being caught in the 3-hour zone shift, Sonic strapped on a Super Emerald and raced across Mobius, taking his various transformed states until the beam struck him, the Super Emerald turning his quills dark blue, his head quills longer, giving him green eyes and adding buckles & soles to his shoes. (StH: #72)
During the Chaos incident in Station Square, when Chaos absorbed the Chaos Emeralds to become Perfect Chaos, Sonic took the remains of that energy to become Super Sonic, using the aura of the Chaos energy to soothe the beast as Knuckles and the Freedom Fighters fought to help stop Chaos and save the citizens. (StH: #84)
After the Xorda
When Sonic was tossed into space after the Xorda Attack on Mobius, he saw the Bzzzz and their queen try to invade Thoraxia, the Blodex homeworld, he tried to stop them. Seeing six red Chaos Emeralds held in a 6-armed statues' hands, he tried to use them to transform into Super Sonic. Instead of Sonic transforming, Super Sonic appeared as a separate, evil being. After coming into being, Evil Super Sonic attacked the Bzzzz and brutally murdered the Bzzzz Queen by spin dashing into her head, and then turned his attention on destroying Thoraxia. Seeing this, Sonic managed to lure Evil Super Sonic somewhere where he wouldn't harm anyone and tried to defeat him, but Evil Super Sonic beat the original Sonic nearly to death, proclaiming "There is no good! There is no evil! There is only power!" and was about to demonstrate that power by trying to blow up two moons. Just in time, Sonic tackled him, causing him to miss. Enraged, Evil Super Sonic attacked Sonic and was about to kill him, when Evil Super Sonic disappeared into nothing, as he ran out of Chaos energy.(StH: #126)
The Fight with A.D.A.M.
Super Sonic was not summoned again until The Great Harmony, when A.D.A.M. gathered all of the Chaos Emeralds from the universe. Sonic and A.D.A.M both decided to utilize their super forms to stop each other, with Sonic becoming Super Sonic and A.D.A.M. becoming Super A.D.A.M.. While they fought, Super Shadow and Turbo Tails sent all of the Emeralds into the Zone of Silence. Then Tommy Turtle, whom A.D.A.M. had possessed, sacrificed himself to destroy A.D.A.M. despite Super Sonic's protests. (StH: #169)
Battle With Enerjak
Sonic transformed once again into Super Sonic during the return of Enerjak, this time using the Master Emerald. Although this could have been prevented, Dr. Finitevus let Sonic transform as he expected the Hex he placed on the Master Emerald to corrupt Super Sonic as well, though, for unknown reasons, the Hex had no effect on him. Following this, Super Sonic fought Enerjak in a battle that could tear the planet apart, but rather than trying to beat Enerjak, Super Sonic toyed around with and teased Knuckles, planning to have his positive aura cleanse Knuckles of Finitevus's dark magic and free him from Enerjak's influence. His plan proved to be for naught, however, as Finitevus' Hex kept Super Sonic's powers from having any noticeable effect. That was, however, until Locke sacrificed his life to remove the Hex, allowing Super Sonic to beat Enerjak and purge Knuckles of Enerjak's influence. (StH: #183, #184)
After Sonic figured out what was happening to his world, he followed Eggman to the Death Egg and went to fight Eggman inside the Death Egg Robot. Sonic, seemingly defeated, used the power of the Chaos Emeralds inside a tube cut of in the Death Egg and became Super Sonic. He defeated the robot and returned the world back to safety... (StH #229)
When Drs. Eggman and Wily tried to rewrite all of reality with a Genesis Wave powered by the seven Chaos Emeralds, Sonic and Mega Man made it to the Genesis Wave Reactor and harnessed the power of the Emeralds just as the Genesis Wave was unleashed, respectively becoming Super Sonic and Super Armor Mega Man. Together, Super Sonic and Super Armor Mega Man fought Drs. Eggman and Wily in their super-powered Egg-Wily Machine X as the cosmos around them was altered by the Genesis Wave. Though the Egg-Wily Machine X was ultimately no match for the two heroes, Super Sonic and Super Armor Mega Man decided to finish the fight quickly after a while, as the Super Genesis Wave continued to take effect, and they combined their powers into a Sonic Shot combo attack that completely destroyed the Egg-Wily Machine X.
After having congratulated each other for a job well done, Super Armor Mega Man worried it was too late to save their universes. Super Sonic, however, assured Super Armor Mega Man that they could restore their universes to their original state with Chaos Control. The two of them then began to charge their own orb of Chaos energy, but when Super Sonic had his orb ready, he was slammed into and rocketed towards his rewritten universe by Eggman in a makeshift Egg Mobile. Despite losing focus from this, Super Sonic launched the orb that would get the Prime Zone back to normal, having decided it was this or nothing. Eggman, however, frayed the orb somewhat in the process with a laser, causing a distorted warp in the Prime Zone's restoration which enveloped Super Sonic and Eggman in whiteness. (StH: #251)
Powers and abilities
While in his super form, Sonic's innate talents are vastly increased, making him one of the strongest figures on Mobius as he was able fight evenly with Enerjak and caused a dimension to explode when clashing with Hyper Knuckles. In this form, Sonic's speed is increased a thousand times over, at one point stated to be incalculable, and he has improved reflexes to match his enhanced movements. His physical strength has also been enhanced to the point where he can lift massive robots such as the Egg Destroyer Battlesuit without any effort, cleave clean through metal and smash through several buildings in succession. In addition, he is capable of flight through midair and is invulnerable to virtually any harm, making him nearly invincible.
As Super Sonic, Sonic is also granted a direct link to the Chaos Force, allowing him to manipulate Chaos energy into a variety of forms; he can form a field of golden energy around himself, project energy blasts and surges with enough power to blow up entire moons, and also perform Chaos Control, allowing him to bend the fabric of time and space to his will.
During his battle with the Universalamander, Super Sonic demonstrated the ability to turn himself intangible, allowing him to pass through solid objects.
Super Sonic also possesses an aura Chaos energy that helps him overwhelm beings powered by negative energy and turn people possessed by evil forces or pure rage back to normal.
- Sonic's first transformation into Super Sonic was seen as a special cheat for fans playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2. This can be seen due to the use of the Sonic 2 variation of the Special Stage and Sonic saying that he needed seven Chaos Emeralds and fifty Rings to do so (this issue also marked the first appearance of the Chaos Emeralds in the series).
- The evil version of Super Sonic could be based off the Super Sonic from Sonic the Comic. In Sonic the Comic, Super Sonic was naturally evil, and became separate from the original Sonic during the comic's run (though in Sonic the Comic they were eventually rejoined). They are also both reliant on Chaos energy to live (STC Super Sonic nearly died because his Chaos energy was running low). Both even shown to have the ability to fire laser beams from their eyes.
