— Fastidious Beaver, "The Sidekick"

Fastidious Beaver is a character that appears in the Sonic Boom series. He is an anthropomorphic beaver and the local librarian of Hedgehog Village. Wild Cat serves as his assistant.[1][2] Always caught in the local goings-on, Fastidious has a knack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.[3]

Concept and creation[]

According to an interview with Bill Freiberger, Fastidious Beaver was created to be one of the characters in the roster for "The Sidekick". During one of the late rewrites of the script, the writers came up with Fastidious' personality traits which proved to be so funny that he was made a recurring character for gags. Mike Pollock, the character's voice actor, stated that he based his voice on voice actor Bill Thompson's interpretation of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer character, Droopy.[4]

Appearance[]

Fastidious is a brown-furred, anthropomorphic beaver with light brown eyes. Slightly shorter than Tails, he has beige fur covering most of his face and his belly. He also has short cheek tufts, a dark brown beaver tail, a black triangular nose, round and flat ears, and two large front teeth. For attire, he hears a small red bowtie, red shoes, white spats, and tan gloves.

In the comics, Fastidious was once colored with brighter brown fur, peach fur on his belly and face, and a blue bowtie.

When he served as a soccer referee, Fastidious wore a black and yellow t-shirt with a red chest logo, and black shoes.[5]

Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric[]

Bygone Island 21

Fastidious Beaver in Mystery Bay.

Trying to get elected as mayor of the Unnamed Village when Mayor Fink ran for the position again, Fastidious opened the Great Mystery Race (though no one told why it had that name) in an attempt to earn the voter's favor, as he reasoned that people loved races. At one point, he even tried the course himself. When Team Sonic arrived, Fastidious insisted the reluctant group to try his race course, eventually convincing them by offering a Power Glyph as a reward. When the team won, Fastidious gave them their reward while encouraging them to vote for him.

TV series[]

Past[]

One time, Fastidious allowed the Endangered Species Coalition to use the Unnamed Village's library for their meetings. In exchange, he was made the group's chairman.[6]

Season one[]

SB S1E01 Compete

Fastidious Beaver trying out as Sonic's sidekick.

When Sonic held try-outs for a new sidekick, Fastidious applied for the job, but was dismissed. When he returned to have his parking ticket validated though, he was chosen as Sonic's third candidate. For his next test, Fastidious and the other candidates had to compete in a Hoverboard race. Fastidious was quickly knocked out though, and he decided to sit the rest out.[7]

While in the Village Center, Fastidious and the villagers were attacked by Fire Bot until Sonic stopped it.[8] When the Awardy Awards were then held, Fastidious came to the gala. There, he got punch spilled on him by Sticks during her attempt to be lady-like. At the height of the evening, he and the other guests were attacked by Eggman's robots when the doctor did not get the award. Thanks to Team Sonic though, Fastidious could return to the gala safely.[9] While minding his own business, Fastidious would find time to visit Meh Burger and pay a visit to T.W. Barker's Circus of Wonders.[10][11] He and the villagers were later caught in Eggman's invasion of the island and were left at the Mega's mercy, until Knuckles, whose severe case of bad luck made the Mega destroy itself, joined Eggman.[12] Fastidious would also go see a large ball of twine where he was saved from a rockslide by Sonic.[13]

When Eggman sued Sonic for injuring him, Fastidious joined the jury meant to monitor the trial. However, when Fastidious and the jurors were ready with a verdict, Eggman was shown to be fine, rendering their decision moot.[14] Later on, as Fastidious was bringing in a wagon of lemons, he was nearly hit by a boulder from a Granifer Giganticus, but was saved by Sonic, losing and then regaining his lemons in the process.[15] Fastidious later went to Meh Burger, but his indecisiveness made Sonic choose his meal for him. He soon after closed his library early to have chili dogs with his assistant Wild Cat. Fastidious thus declined Sonic's attempt to return a book until Eggman blew a hole in the library and let Sonic hand Fastidious the book.[2] Some time later, Fastidious got involved in the Battle of the Buns between Chez Amy and Meh Burger. Depending on their gimmicks, Fastidious would switch between these joints until Chez Amy closed down.[16] Finding his way to Sticks' Burrow for its yard sale, Fastidious bought some stuff from Amy despite Sticks' unwillingness to sell it.[17]

S1E32 16

While Knuckles served as deputy mayor, Fastidious got the echidna to approve permits which included the construction of a new library wing and prohibition on borrowing books, much to Amy Rose's annoyance. However, Fastidious would soon see the consequences of Knuckles' usage power.[18] Fastidious later joined Amy's sensitivity seminar and had a good time, though his fellow participant Sonic eventually left them to retire. Later, Fastidious joined the seminar on a camping trip and found Sonic back in business upon his return.[19] Detecting some improper grammar, Fastidious came to Tails' Work to correct Sonic, only to leave in dismissal when Sonic saw him.[20]

At New Year's Eve, Fastidious came to the party held in the Village Center where he let loose for once. During the party, Dr. Eggman used his Slow Motion Machine to slow down time long enough for him to beat Sonic in something before New Year, though Fastidious did not see Eggman's victory as it happened too fast for him to notice.[21] When he later saw the news on Justin Beaver, Fastidious was unaware he was being avoided when the news mentioned a "Beaver Fever" (a reference to Justin's fame).[22] Fastidious later had a laugh in the Village Center from watching Tails try to get Zooey's attention with a dance.[23]

SB S1E41 Villagers cheer

Fastidious Beaver at Bro-Down Showdown.

When Bro-Down Showdown was being held in the Village Center, Fastidious saw the show with the live audience. However, he sought shelter when Obliterator Bot attacked the Village.[24] He later followed Comedy Chimp's fan signing and photoshooting, during which Knuckles began a trash can trend. Like the rest of the Village, Fastidious would adore Knuckles during his time of fame.[25] During the time Sonic was thought to be a thief, Fastidious joined the angry mob at the town hall where Knuckles promised them to bring in Sonic, though Sonic was later proved innocent.[26] Fastidious later came to the Robot Battle Royale, where he saw Eggman steal Tails' Hypnobot at the end.[27]

Becoming a Fuzzy Puppies enthusiast, Fastidious attended many meetings with his Fuzzy Puppy fan group, where he helped fellow fan Eggman learn the game. Fastidious soon after came to Puppy Con where he saw Eggman's fruitless agenda to steal a rare playing piece.[28] Later, upon Team Sonic's millionth defeat of Eggman, Fastidious would salute the group and bring them their Greatest Role Model of All Time Award.[29] Fastidious later came to watch Team Sonic put up a play named A Rose Without Thorns. Though he applauded the play, a storm broke out after the finale, and Fastidious took Sonic's offer to take shelter in Amy's House.[30] As a new supervillain later arose, Fastidious would pay it no mind while having lunch.[31]

Season two[]

Old and New Villagers

Fastidious at Eggman's bunker.

Hearing that an asteroid would impact the earth, Fastidious showed up to buy a spot in Eggman's bunker to ride out the impending apocalypse in. Although Fastidious did not get a spot, Team Sonic would stop the asteroid.[32] Fastidious would later curl up from stress when Sticks' news podcast on the local truths was on, as he could not handle the truth.[33] Another time in the Village Center, Fastidious was left bewildered when he saw Sonic travel to another plane of existence. He fled shortly after when Eggman launched an ambush on the Village.[34]

While subtly hypnotized by Dreamcaster's TV broadcasts, Fastidious angrily faced Sticks when she disturbed him with her unlikely story about Dreamcaster on TV. Fastidious soon after became Dr. Eggman's zombie slave, who had him and the hypnotized villagers build a world-controlling satellite. He would then attack Sticks when she came to their rescue, but was freed when Team Sonic foiled Eggman's plan.[35] Seeing Tails deploy a successful Village defense against Eggman later on, Fastidious would praise the fox at his trophy ceremony until Eggman arrived through a hole in the defense.[36] Fastidious soon after took a job as Eggman's minion at Eggman's job fair to earn some cash. While Fastidious grasped the housework at Eggman's lair, he proved too disobedient for Eggman's taste during their trip to the Ice Cream Vendor. His resignation came when he fled after being ordered to fight Sonic.[37]

FastidiousExam

Fastidious overseeing the villains' exam.

When the local villains had to take a written exam to get a permit for evildoing, Fastidious acted as the exam's invigilator and grader. Failing the exam, Eggman wanted a do-over, but Fastidious revealed he had to wait ninety days. Fastidious soon after oversaw another exam which Orbot aced.[38] Back in the library, Fastidious found Knuckles applying for a job there, but had to decline when Knuckles revealed he was illiterate.[39] Learning later that their village was named after Sticks' evil ancestor, Jebediah Badger, Fastidious began scorning Sticks. As a vote between Amy and Eggman's propositions for a new town name then came underway, Fastidious was visited by Amy's party and voted in the following referendum. Escaping Eggman's attempt to demolish the Village soon after, Fastidious returned to his job in the library.[40] Fastidious soon after became a science judge at the Science Fair Awards. There, he helped hand out participation trophies to the losers.[41] When Tails later seemingly proved Muckfoot's existence with a photo, Fastidious would praise Tails as a hero and take part in the ensuing Muckfoot Mania.[42] Returning to the Village Center, Fastidious would get chased around by Team Sonic's new pet.[43] Some time afterward, Fastidious went to the beach.[44]

Discovering a widabit had chosen Sonic's Shack for its courting ritual, Fastidious, on behalf of ESC, made Sonic vacate his home. He later halted a battle between Eggman and Sonic to protect a widabit intruding on them. As more widabits came to Sonic's Shack, Fastidious permitted Sonic to relocate them once there were fifty of them. When that happened however, Fastidious noted that Sonic had to wait a week while two of the widabits finished their courting ritual.[6] As the Lightning Bowler Society rose to stardom soon after, Fastidious chose to come to one of their public appearances.[45] Back in the Village Center, Fastidious steered clear of Eggman when he had a rage trip. Once Amy and Sticks drove the doctor off, Fastidious cheered for the duo. Belinda appeared immediately after however, who froze Fastidious with Charlie's Mech Suit after hearing his trademark grammar correction. Fortunately, he was released when Amy and Sticks defeated Belinda.[46] Fastidious checked in at "Eggman Towers" afterward, only to get kicked out by Eggman when he had complains.[47] When local gossip then revealed that Dr. Eggman was no doctor, Fastidious began seeing him as a joke. He thus joined the villagers in mocking Eggman during the scientist's next trip to the Village, although Eggman soon got a real doctorate.[48]

BeQuiet

Fastidious shushing Eggman.

Returning to his work in the library, Fastidious would shush Eggman when he made too much noise.[49] Later in the Village Center, Fastidious got pulled into an anti-gravity field by Cubot, who was now crazy and able to control gravity, when he came through town. As Fastidious was about to be saved by Team Sonic though, Cubot began taking him to space. While Fastidious was brought down to earth again by Sonic and Tails before he died from asphyxia, he nearly got crushed by the increased gravity emanating from Cubot's gravity device. Thankfully, he was saved when Knuckles smashed the device.[50] When Team Sonic and Team Cybonic later had a soccer match that would decide the closed rec center's fate, Fastidious switched between being a part of the audience and the acting referee for the game. When Fastidious declared Team Sonic the winner, Mayor Fink announced that the rec center would be reopened, much to Fastidious' joy.[5]

When Fastidious went to his nightly meeting with his book club in the library, he and his group got interrupted when Vector and his crew came and accused one of them of theft, only to be proven wrong.[51] Fastidious was later caught by Dr. Eggman, who held him hostage alongside Leroy the Turtle to distract Sonic for his latest plan. When Sonic arrived however, he was able to free Fastidious and Leroy in no time at all.[52] Back in the Village Center, Fastidious saw Sonic walk around in a sunflower costume. A swarm of Bee Bots led by Tails appeared immediately after, prompting Fastidious to make his escape.[53] Returning to his workplace in the library, Fastidious told Eggman when the latter came to borrow some books that his library card had been revoked. Fastidious' declaration was rendered moot though when Eggman borrowed Beth the Shrew's library card.[54]

While at a restaurant, Fastidious took cover as Dr. Eggman attacked in the Big Boy. While hiding, he talked with Comedy Chimp about the inconvenience of Eggman's attacks.[55]

Fastidious Beaver, from Sonic Boom #5.

In the Village Center, Fastidious met Dr. Eggman who offered him a bridge, but refused. Fastidious soon after chose to trust Eggman by going to the Eggtoberfest, but when the rides would not work, he and an angry mob made Eggman fix the problem. Despite this, Fastidious knew the Eggtoberfest was an attempt to buy his trust, prompting Eggman to attack the villagers with his army until Team Sonic stopped it.[56] When the Go-kart Pan-island Grand Prix shortly after arrived, Fastidious served as the competition's flag marshal.[57] As the race ended in Sonic the Hedgehog's victory, Fastidious untimely commented on how "corny" his corn snack was when Sonic made a friendship speech, earning him some dirty looks from the heroes.[58]

Worlds Unite[]

As Fastidious was heading home from the Go-kart Pan-island Grand Prix with Comedy Chimp, the two of them were strong-armed by Sticks into joining Team Sticks and help her get the Maverick Hunters, who were stranded in their dimension, to the location of the evil Sigma. Though Fastidious was less that eager, the group went to Eggman's lair, where they had Orbot and Cubot open a Genesis Portal.[59] Fastidious and his team followed the Maverick Hunters through the portal to where Sonic's World and Earth from the year 20XX were being merged by Sigma's Unity Engines. Amidst this chaos, Fastidious and his allies joined the Freedom Fighters and the Robot Masters of Light Labs to stop Sigma's plans.[60] Heading for Sigma's base on the Lost Hex in the Sky Patrol, the Unified Army ran into Sigma's first line of defense: the Deadly Six and an army of Mechaniloids.[61] As a massive fight erupted, Fastidious and Comedy Chimp fled into the Sky Patrol in terror upon Fastidious' suggestion and hid for the remainder of the battle despite Sticks' demands.[62][63]

The Unified Army had no time to rest from their victory as Sigma, now the colossal "Sigma-2," attacked with his army of Mavericks. When Sticks arrived with reinforcements from the world of Street Fighter, Fastidious and Comedy Chimp remained on the Sky Patrol to watch over the Chaos Emeralds while the rest of their allies pursued the Mavericks to the various worlds they invaded.[64] During this, Sigma attacked the Sky Patrol, but with aid from Metal Sonic, Fastidious and the crew got away in an escape pod with the Emeralds before Sigma destroyed the Sky Patrol.[65][66]

Traumatized

Fastidious traumatized by his trip, from Mega Man #52.

Reuniting with the Unified Army, now bolstered by new members from different dimensions, Fastidious helped Cream guard the Emeralds until an alternate Sonic and Mega Man needed the Emeralds.[67] While Super Sonic and Super Armor Mega Man beat Sigma, their Genesis Portal-ravaged reality would have killed them, but Xander Payne changed history by preventing Sigma's plot from happening, thus sending Fastidious' team back home. Retaining their memories though, Fastidious and Comedy Chimp were left severely traumatized and could thus not verify Sticks' story.[68]

Personality[]

Due to his profession, Fastidious is calm and formal, but also fussy and uptight.[1][3] A grammar enthusiast, he has a habit of correcting other peoples' grammar, and often begins his sentences with the word "actually." He also has a peculiar view on books, believing they are for sitting neatly in rows on shelves rather than being read.[18]

According to Fastidious himself, he is an immense coward, which is his biggest weakness.[7] He is also very weak-willed of character; he admits he cannot handle overwhelming things, and he has a tendency to curl up in a fetal position when stressed.[7][33] However, he appears to be at peace with his negative aspects and does not get upset easily.[60] When he knows he has the law on his side though, Fastidious can be quite assertive, headstrong and unwavering in the face of danger.[6] When properly motivated, Fastidious can also be a dedicated laborer.[37] Even so, he recognizes when he is in too deep.[37]

Fastidious takes little interest in people, like when he thought that all of Team Sonic's members were hedgehogs, only to tell them when they disagreed that he did not care. He also has a tendency to ruin his own good time by sticking to subjects he is not all that interested in unless someone pushes him towards something better, making him a wet blanket for himself. He also has a hard time on deciding things, like what he wants to eat.[2][37]
