History[]

Early life[]

Sonic was born on day 162 of year 3220 during the early days of the Great War to the loving couple Jules and Bernadette Hedgehog in Mobotropolis. While his parents originally named him after his grandfathers, Sonic quickly picked up his nickname due to his incredible speed which he would use to run everywhere. Sonic eventually had his name legally changed, with no disrespect meant to his forebears.[2]

Sonic first met Sally Acorn during one of his uncle's many visits to King Maximillian Acorn. When the King realized the Great War was going badly for the Mobians, he ordered a large number of the children in the city, including his daughter and Sonic, to the sanctuary of Knothole Village under the protection of Rosie and Julayla.[2][4]

Sonic and his friends returned to Mobotropolis at the end of the Great War.[5] Both of Sonic's parents had fallen victim to the Roboticizer, his father during the Great War and his mother after its end, forcing his Uncle Chuck to raise him alone.[6][7] Sonic and his friends were present on the day Miles "Tails" Prower was born, and Sonic was sure they would grow up to be great friends.[8] Later that same day, Warlord Julian launched a full scale coup d'état and took over the city, renaming it Robotropolis.[5] During his takeover, Sonic's uncle Chuck and pet dog Muttski were captured and roboticized as well, effectively making Sonic an orphan. Sonic himself was tasked with locating as many children as he could find and bring them to the haven of Knothole by Colonel Tig Stripe, which he successfully did.[9] While in Knothole, Sonic and Sally became inspired by Tig Stripe's band of Freedom Fighters, eventually forming their own group called the Knothole Freedom Fighters with their friends Rotor Walrus, Antoine D'Coolette and young Tails. Together they promised to overthrow Robotnik and take back their city.[9][10]

Freedom Fighter[]

Over the years, Sonic and the others struck back against Robotnik's growing empire. Using guerrilla tactics and espionage to ruin many of Robotnik's schemes, Sonic's speed proved to be a crucial element to the team's success.[11] By the age of eight, Sonic was easily defeating Robotnik's Badnik Hordes, including the Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad.[12] One of Sonic's earliest missions had him investigating one of Robotnik's slave labor camps; there, he met a young Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel, who had both been imprisoned. Sonic eventually freed Mighty and the two attempted to free as many prisoners as possible, forcing Robotnik to abandon the camp. However, Ray was seemingly lost and Sonic and Mighty failed to save a young girl named Fiona Fox.[13][14] Sonic and Rotor also found and rescued a rabbit girl named Bunnie as she was being roboticized; though the process had been half-completed, she resolved to join the team.[15] As time went on, Robotnik began to see the Knothole Freedom Fighters as a viable threat, and thus made it his priority to locate their secret village of Knothole.

While most of his time was spent combating Robotnik and his hordes of SWATbots and Badniks, Sonic occasionally encountered other obstacles. At one point, while on the other side of Mobius, Sonic attempted to get to Robotropolis quickly using the Cosmic Interstate, which lead him to the parallel universe of Anti-Mobius. During his brief time in this realm, Sonic encountered his alternate self, Evil Sonic. Although he quickly defeated his evil double and safely made his way home, he had made a long-time enemy.[16]

Sonic&Tails01

Sonic and Tails in Hydrocity Zone, from Sonic the Hedgehog #13.

During one of his missions with his young friend Tails, Sonic encountered the Floating Island, home of Knuckles the Echidna, while flying in their plane, the Tornado. At the time, Knuckles had been coerced by Robotnik to assume Sonic and Tails were after the island's Chaos Emerald. While Knuckles was distracted trying to apprehend Sonic and Tails, Robotnik was able to briefly take the Chaos Emerald for himself. Upon realizing he had been tricked, Knuckles teamed up with Sonic and Tails and the three retook the Emerald from Robotnik.[17]

Some time later, another alternate version of Sonic, called Cyborg Sonic, came to the prime universe via the Cosmic Interstate, trying to gain help from Sonic to stop his own version of Robotnik, called Robo-Robotnik. With the help of numerous alternate-reality Sonics, and the unexpected assistance of the prime universe's Dr. Robotnik, Robo-Robotnik was stopped from taking over the multiverse.[18]

Robotnik later planned a trap for Sonic, capturing the hedgehog's number-one fan, Amy Rose. Using her as a hostage, Robotnik was able to lure Sonic into the Collision Chaos Zone where he was forced to race against Robotnik's newest creation, Metal Sonic. Although the overweight despot had numerous traps hidden throughout the race course, Sonic was able to survive and eventually caused Metal Sonic to overheat, destroying the robot's legs and causing him to crash. The rest of the Freedom Fighters went on to free Amy and Tails, who had also been captured.[19]

Mecha Sonic[]

Sonic is made into Robotnik's deadliest weapon: Mecha Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog #39.

Feeling the need to step up their efforts, Sonic proposed a plan to undergo roboticization while using Rotor's invention, the Neuro-Overrider, to maintain his free will so that he could destroy Robotnik and Robotropolis with an enhanced robotic body. The plan was denied by Sally and the Knothole Council for being too risky, much to Sonic's dismay. However, Sonic was later captured by the bounty hunter Nack the Weasel, who turned the hedgehog over to Robotnik; thus he was roboticized without the Neuro-Overrider. With his free will almost completely gone, Mecha Sonic was sent on a mission to destroy Knothole Village entirely. Although he succeeded in damaging a large part of the village, he was unable to transmit the coordinates of its location, as he was engaged in combat with Bunnie Rabbot and later Knuckles the Echidna, who had arrived in response to a distress call. While Mecha Sonic managed to overcome his former allies, it was then proposed that Knuckles be roboticized in order to better match Mecha Sonic's abilities.[20] The fight between Mecha Knuckles and Mecha Sonic concluded with the two crashing into a nuclear stockpile in Robotropolis. Mecha Sonic, badly damaged and having regained some of his free will, felt deep remorse over his actions, and Mecha Knuckles returned him to Knothole. Sonic was restored to his former self when Sally used the magical powers of Sonic's one billionth Power Ring, healing and deroboticizing him at once.[21]

However, Sonic was tried in court by Antoine for treason, as it was believed that Sonic had disobeyed the council and had allowed himself to be roboticized; though Sonic was ultimately found guilty, he was given the opportunity to prove his innocence. Eventually, he succeeded in hunting down Nack the Weasel, clearing his name.[22]

Endgame[]

Sonicrobotnikfight

Sonic and Robotnik battle as the UA fires, from Sonic the Hedgehog #50.

Some time after the failure of Mecha Sonic, Robotnik finally decided to enact his ultimate plan to destroy Knothole Village and the Freedom Fighters - Operation: EndGame. Robotnik's secret agent Drago Wolf (a former member of the Wolf Pack) was able to trick Hershey Cat into seemingly murdering Princess Sally while framing Sonic for the act. Additionally, Robotnik had replaced the recently rescued King Max with a robotic duplicate, who would be used to misdirect the Freedom Fighters. With the Freedom Fighters believing Sonic to be a traitor and ordered to arrest him, Robotnik would be able to prepare his super weapon, the Ultimate Annihilator, which would erase Knothole from existence. Sonic was arrested for the murder and sentenced to the Devil's Gulag;[23] however, by chance, his transport was shot down and he escaped, resolving to clear his name and find those responsible for killing Sally. He was forced to evade Geoffrey St. John, who relentlessly tracked the hedgehog, and eventually found himself cornered on the Floating Island by Knuckles the Echidna and Espio the Chameleon;[24][25] however, thanks to Dulcy the Dragon, who possessed the ability to detect lies, he was able to finally prove his innocence. He returned to Knothole (which at this point had been overtaken by Robotnik's forces) with Geoffrey and Knuckles to liberate the citizens. During it all, he discovered Drago and Hershey's involvement in framing him and set off for Robotropolis. Once there, Sonic and Robotnik engaged in hand-to-hand combat. Due to Snively's treachery, however, the Ultimate Annihilator was reprogrammed to only target the war room and Robotnik's DNA signature, erasing him from existence, thus finishing the battle and ending the ten-year reign of the evil dictator.[26]

A New Age[]

With Robotnik's reign of terror now over, Sonic the Hedgehog and the rest of the Freedom Fighters were able to retake Robotropolis. Although Snively attempted to maintain control of the city and combat the Freedom Fighters using a DYNAMAC, he was quickly defeated by Sonic and company. With the city completely under control once again, Sonic was able to search the city for his uncle Chuck and the other Robians. Upon locating his uncle, Sonic soon discovered his parents were still alive when he met them for the first time since his early childhood years. In order to spare Sonic the truth of his parents' existence as Robians, Chuck had told Sonic they had died during the Great War. Angered by the deceit, Sonic was unwilling to speak to either his uncle or his parents for some time.[27]

With the real King Max returned to power (although still suffering from the crystallization effects that resulted from his time in the Zone of Silence), it seemed Mobotropolis would regain its peaceful state. However, the king first ordered that the Freedom Fighters be disbanded and, when concerns arose between the Robians and the rest of the population, he decreed the former were to be dismantled. As conflict arose from these decrees and tensions continued to mount, it was eventually discovered that Max was being controlled by the wizard Ixis Naugus, who had been attempting to take control of Mobotropolis upon his own escape from the Zone of Silence. Sonic used the Sword of Acorns to free the king from the wizard's control. With his plans foiled, Naugus escaped from the city and King Max was finally restored to full health.[28][29]

Sonic and the Freedom Fighters were briefly sent to the Floating Island, upon receiving a call from Locke the Echidna, Knuckles' father. Almost immediately after arriving, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles were transported to another zone by the now all-powerful Mammoth Mogul, who became virtually omnipotent after stealing the powers from Enerjak using the Sword of Acorns. Although his powers were great, the combined might of Super Sonic, Knuckles, and Turbo Tails, as well as assistance from Athair, proved too much, and he was imprisoned within the newly formed Master Emerald.[30][31]

Sonic Period

Sonic's father explains Sonic's name, from Sonic the Hedgehog #53.

With Naugus freed and plotting his revenge, Sonic and Tails were ordered to search the planet, track him down, and reseal him within the Zone of Silence. Over the next few months, the two went from the lush lands of the Great Forest, to alternate realities,[32] to the Dragon Kingdom,[33] to the outback of Downunda,[34] to the desert lands and Sand Blast City,[35][36] to the Kingdom of Mercia[37] and finally to the frozen lands of the Southern Tundra.[38] Eventually, Sonic and Tails, with the help of over a billion power rings, defeated an also super powered Naugus and trapped him within the Zone of Silence once again with the help of Nate Morgan and Eddy the Yeti, the latter sacrificing his life to save Sonic, Tails, and Nate from Nate's collapsing castle.[39]

With Naugus trapped away, Sonic and Tails returned to Mobotropolis. While the Mobians were able to enjoy a short time of peace, they soon realized another threat was looming over them. For months, the planet had been plagued with a variety of events which seemed too random to be normal acts of nature. It became apparent that someone was responsible for these when a broadcasted message from King Max was interrupted and replaced by a history of the life of Robotnik. It was discovered by Nicole, Sally's hand-held computer A.I. that the message was delivered from a number of satellites orbiting the planet. While everyone assumed them to be abandoned projects of Robotnik and no real threat at first, they soon realized this was not the case when all of the Robians disappeared overnight.[40][41]

A New Threat: Dr. Eggman[]

Enraged by the disappearance of his family, Sonic took it upon himself to discover what was going on with the satellites. Despite her father's orders, Sally chose to help Sonic go through with his plan by reforming the Freedom Fighters. With the discovery of a space shuttle within Mobotropolis by Nate Morgan and Rotor Walrus, which was originally created by Robotnik prior to his death in order to expand his empire beyond the planet, the Freedom Fighters made their way into space. Once inside the massive station, which was formed by the connected satellites, Sonic and his friends discovered a horrifying secret—Doctor Robotnik was still alive![42]

Sonickicksbot

Sonic fights his way through the retaken Robotropolis, from Sonic the Hedgehog #76.

After a brief fight between Sonic and the evil dictator, it was discovered that this was not the late Dr. Robotnik who had been erased by the Ultimate Annihilator, but rather the roboticized version from another reality, Robo-Robotnik. Having barely survived his confrontation with the various Sonics nearly a year ago, Robo-Robotnik had managed to rebuild his body using a part from the Giant Borg machine. He then went on to nuke the city of Mobotropolis in his reality and destroy Cyborg Sonic and the Freedom Fighters. With no opposition in his own reality, and discovering that Dr. Robotnik had died in the prime zone, Robo-Robotnik traveled through space and time to replace his deceased alternative self in that reality.[43]

When the Freedom Fighters confronted Robo-Robotnik, they soon discovered they'd been lured into space so that Robo-Robotnik's Shadowbots could easily reclaim Mobotropolis and capture its citizens for roboticization. Additionally, all the other Robians had been transported to the station and had their free will removed, once again making them Robotnik's workforce. With his second takeover of Mobotropolis in effect, Robo-Robotnik soon sent the Robians off—but Sonic's parents remained to assist their son, having retained their free will thanks to their power ring wedding bands. Sonic and the Freedom Fighters were able to destroy the satellite base with the help of Snively, and escaped on the space shuttle, with Sonic's parents, back to Mobius. Robo-Robotnik, seemingly left to perish, simply downloaded his consciousness into a new robotic body located under the former Castle Acorn in the re-christened Robotropolis.[43]

With Robo-Robotnik now in control of Robotropolis, the Mobians fled to Knothole Village. In his new body, Robo-Robotnik renamed himself Dr. Eggman, and planned on downloading the location of Knothole Village into his mind from his old systems. However, before he was able to do so, Sally, Nicole and Snively (who was forced to tag along at the time) deleted the information from Robotropolis' computers, preventing Knothole's location from being discovered by the new despot. Meanwhile, Sonic located the remaining Mobians who were trapped in the city during its evacuation, and helped them escape. One girl attempted to run back into the city, desperate to find her family, but Sonic stopped and comforted her; this girl introduced herself as Mina Mongoose. With the help of Dulcy, Sonic, Sally and the other refugees made their way back to Knothole.[44]

When Dr. Eggman released Chaos from the confines of the Black Emerald, which was then sent to the human city of Station Square, Sonic and the other Freedom Fighters were sent to stop it.[45][46][47] While Sonic and Knuckles seemingly killed Chaos on-board the Egg Carrier, the water-created being managed to survive and obtain the last of the seven Chaos Emeralds, using the negative energy to becoming Perfect Chaos. With the creature wreaking havoc in Station Square, Sonic was forced to use the remaining positive energies of the Emeralds to become Super Sonic to combat the new threat.[48][49][50] He successfully defeated Perfect Chaos, who then returned to his confines in the Black Emerald alongside Tikal. The humans in Station Square thanked the Freedom Fighters for their help.[51]

Before they could return to Knothole, however, Dr. Eggman launched another mechanical duplicate of Sonic, known as Silver Sonic v2.0, to destroy Station Square. While Silver Sonic II was able to outmatch the other Freedom Fighters with ease, his injuring of Tails pushed Sonic over the edge, allowing him to defeat the robot duplicate by knocking its head off. Nate Morgan then reprogrammed Silver Sonic II to protect the city against Eggman.[52]

Metal Sonic dodging Sonic

Sonic fights the self-repaired Metal Sonic v2.5, from Sonic the Hedgehog #86.

With Station Square safe and with a permanent protector there, Sonic and the Freedom Fighters bid the humans farewell. Shortly after their departure in the Freedom Fighter Special however, the ship experienced a malfunction and was forced to land. Little did they know that the one responsible for this was none other than the original Mecha Sonic. During reconnaissance of the area, Tails was captured and taken hostage by the metallic duplicate, who wished to prove his superiority over Sonic. Sonic, determined to rescue his best friend, attempted to defeat Metal Sonic alone. However, the self-rebuilt robot proved far too powerful, cunning and advanced, due to the Power Gem embedded in his chest.[53] Sonic managed to temporarily trap the robot and left to rescue Tails from within Mount Mobius, which was about to erupt. Metal Sonic soon caught up and taunted the two; while Sonic argued that the capability for compassion was not a weakness, Metal Sonic continued to boast that he was superior to organic lifeforms. However, when Metal Sonic saw that Tails and Sonic were willing to risk their own safety for the sake of the other, the robot had a change of heart. Moved by their selflessness, Metal Sonic held back the lava flow and while the two could escape before being overwhelmed by lava. As they headed for home, Sonic told Tails it was refusal to abandon him that caused Metal Sonic's change.[54]

Dr. Eggman and Other Foes[]

Upon returning home, Sonic found King Max amassing an army in order to rescue Prince Elias Acorn from Dr. Eggman. Distraught from the turn of events, Sally was forced to stay in Knothole and tasked Sonic with keeping her father safe. During the fight, however, Sonic saw the king use the Sword of Acorns to unintentionally restore free will to his uncle Chuck and Muttski. This distracted Sonic, and King Max was soundly struck by a ShadowBot.[55] While the mission was a success overall, Sonic's failure to protect Max resulted in the king being wheelchair-bound for many months. Sonic felt guilty over this; however, he nonetheless stole the Sword of Acorns, planning to use it to restore the free will of the remaining Robians in Robotropolis.[56] He ran into Mina Mongoose on the way, who had also lost a parent to roboticization; the two were suddenly attacked by Combots, and Sonic was knocked unconscious. While Mina was able to get Sonic back to Knothole, the sword was lost.[57]

Later, while attempting to retrieve the sword from Dr. Eggman (unaware that it had since been taken by Uma Arachnis), Sonic witnessed the return of the Overlanders from space. Feeling they were in danger from Robotnik as much as anyone, Sonic attempted to convince them to flee the area; however, an enraged Monkey Khan soon arrived, seeking revenge from Robotnik, and the Overlanders were spooked by the two Mobians. This allowed Robotnik to easily convince them to seek "safety" within his city, which they did.[58][59] Having failed here, Sonic returned to Knothole; having lost the Sword of Acorns, he was stripped of his knighthood and ordered to remain confined within the village.[60]

Weeks later, Sonic went against orders once again and left the city, wanting to check up on the Overlanders in Robotropolis. He was joined by Bunnie Rabbot, and the two were shocked to find that Eggman had not harmed the people. Within the Great Forest, the two were caught up in a battle between Uma Arachnis and Kodos. As Kodos proved to be extremely wild and dangerous, Sonic forced Bunnie to leave; however, Sonic soon found himself about to be killed. To his surprise, Uma Arachnis viciously attacked Kodos and freed Sonic before departing.[61] Sonic secretly left Kodos at the hospital in Knothole before returning home. The next morning, a Shadowbot charged into Knothole; as it turned out, Uncle Chuck had indeed regained his free will and had reprogrammed the robot in order to deliver a message to Sonic; Uma had taken the Sword of Acorns.[62] Adopting a disguise and going by the alias, "The Sneak" of Sand Blast City, Sonic attempted to track down Arachnis; however, when Geoffry St. John and the Royal Secret Service went to Robotropolis, thinking the Sword of Acorns was still there, Sonic stepped in to rescue them, only for them all to end up temporarily captured. Once free, he attempted to get back to Knothole before he could be recognized, hiding his disguise in the woods.[63]

Sonic's escape from G.U.N., from Sonic the Hedgehog #98.

Just as Sonic stashed his disguise, he was apprehended by Station Square's defense force G.U.N.; they believed that Sonic was responsible for the recent destruction of Silver Sonic v2.0 and the theft of a Chaos Emerald. It turned out that the real thief was Shadow the Hedgehog, a being created by Dr. Robotnik's maternal grandfather Professor Gerald Robotnik.[64] However, G.U.N. would apparently catch Sonic, but not without Sonic beating G.U.N, escaped and been given chase by an oversized G.U.N. track. After learning he was not the criminal, G.U.N. proceeded to conscript him into their services to fight Shadow.[65] Sonic eventually found Shadow on Prison Island on a mission to steal the six Chaos Emeralds. As the two fought, Eggman informed Shadow that he had set the charges on the island and it was set to blow. Shadow's partner, Rouge the Bat, then called saying that she was trapped in the vault where the other Chaos Emeralds they sought were held. Eggman, unconcerned, merely told Shadow to meet him later, saying that they'd simply dig out the Emeralds once the island had blown up. Sonic, overhearing this, offered a temporary truce with Shadow in order to save Rouge. The two managed to reach Rouge within the vault, and Shadow used Chaos Control to teleport all three out into a desert near Eggman's base. He then teleported away with the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic and Rouge, after introducing themselves, formed an alliance; Rouge was actually an agent of G.U.N. sent to investigate Shadow and Eggman's actions, and the two broke into Eggman's base to steal a shuttle in order to reach the space station known as the ARK. As it turned out, the ARK was armed with the dangerous Eclipse Cannon, which required Chaos Emeralds to fire. Sonic confronted Shadow again, and as they battled, Rouge found a video that she felt Shadow needed to see. Realizing his desire to use the Eclipse Cannon in revenge against Mobius was folly, Shadow teamed up with Sonic and the two attempted to shut down the cannon. However, a monstrous prototype called the Biolizard used Chaos Control in an attempt to cause the ARK to crash into Mobius. However, the two hedgehogs used the emeralds to transform into Super Sonic and Super Shadow and defeated the beast and then used Chaos Control to send the ARK back into orbit; unfortunately, Shadow had exhausted himself during the battle, and Sonic could only watch as he fell toward the planet's surface.[66]

Eventually returning home, Sonic began training Mina Mongoose to use her recently-discovered super speed. One day, Kodos awoke within the hospital and went on an insane rampage; it was discovered that he had suffered extreme radiation poisoning from living within the sewers of Robotropolis.[67] When Sally found the near-dead Uma Arachnis, the spider revealed to the princess where she'd hidden the Sword of Acorns; this resulted in Sally being chased by Kodos, who, in his insanity, had become obsessed with the Sword. Sonic thought that Sally had fallen to her death within a ravine; however, she was saved by the power of the Sword of Acorns, which had been hidden there, and used it to vanquish Kodos. Thanks to Kodos, it was realized that the Overlanders in Robotropolis were also being exposed to toxic radiation; the Freedom Fighters set out to warn them. Eventually the Overlanders were convinced to leave; thanks to the Sword of Acorns, the Robians of the city were also freed.[68][69][70]

Sonic was later called back to Station Square to save them from Zan, in exchange for allowing the Overlander refugees to relocate there.[71][72] Further problems included the temporary return of Dr. Robotnik, who attempted to betray the Freedom Fighters to Eggman before perishing for good.[73] He also helped free the Walrus Herd from Eggman's control,[74] protected Knothole from a nuclear strike launched against Robotropolis by O.T.I.S.,[75] fought the Arachne Clan to protect the Sword of Acorns,[76] helped Zonic after he was attacked by Evil Sonic,[77] persuaded Uncle Chuck of his innocence for actions he had taken while under Eggman's control,[78] and battled Mammoth Mogul after learning that the villain had replaced Tails with a magical duplicate.[79] Sonic would then deal with a genie who took away his super speed and gave it to Muttski,[80] join Bunnie and Rouge in stopping Eggman from creating a new and more dangerous robotic body,[81] reunite with his old friend Tommy Turtle before losing him again,[82] be Roboticized by the Bem alongside Tails to battle a De-Roboticized Eggman and Snively,[83] thwart a new model of Caterkiller,[84] stop Eggman from capturing Elias,[85] defeat Nack the Weasel's gang to save Sally, and admit his feelings for her.[86][87] This resolved her previous fears that he was more attracted to Mina Mongoose, whom he helped start a singing career.[88][89]

Xorda Attack and Tossed in Space[]

Alonggoodbye

Sonic bids Sally goodbye before attempting to stop the Quantum Dial, from Sonic the Hedgehog #125.

Sadly, just after Sally and Sonic announced their engagement, the xenophobic alien race known as the Xorda came to Mobius. They went on to explain that Mobius used to be called Earth, and that thousands of years ago, they sent an emissary to the human population to discuss a peace agreement, only for it to be killed and dissected. In retaliation, the Xorda attacked Earth, launching Gene Bombs on the planet, which lead to the de-evolution of humans and the evolution of the animal kingdom. They had now returned to the Earth to finish the job the Gene Bomb was supposed to do, which was to wipe out all life on the planet.[90] Their ship's attack on Mobius was short lived, but the Xorda had one weapon left in their arsenal - the Quantum Dial. The Quantum Dial was a massive device which would open up a black hole, enveloping the planet and the entire solar system. Although almost all of the people of Mobius attacked the huge weapon together, its defenses proved too great. It was only when Knuckles, who had just returned from the afterlife, took out the weapon's entire defense systems, that Sonic was able to get into it and shut it down, saving the entire planet. However, by shutting it down, Sonic was transported billions of light years off world to another galaxy.[91]

Realizing he was trapped on the other side of the universe, Sonic spent the next few months jumping across worlds while searching for a way home. He first found himself on the planet Thoraxia, whose population consisted of two insectoid-like races, the Blodex and the Bzzz. Before Sonic could find a way off the planet, he found himself having to use the Red Chaos Emeralds on the planet to defend the Blodex from the invading Bzzz. However, rather than turning Sonic into Super Sonic, the Red Emeralds manifested the power Sonic absorbed into a separate being which became Super Sonic.[92] The new being defeated the Bzzz, but didn't stop there. Instead, it went on a total rampage and began destroying the Blodex as well. Realizing he was responsible for the creation of this new menace, Sonic went to fight Super Sonic and stop him from causing any more harm. After stopping Super Sonic from destroying Thoraxia's two moons, Super Sonic went on to pummel Sonic. Like the Chaos Emeralds on Mobius however, the power was only temporary, causing Super Sonic to dissipate before he could finish Sonic off.[93]

After saving the Blodex, the insect-like race contacted a neighboring species called the D'novulands to assist Sonic's trip home. The D'novulands placed a device in Sonic's ear, the "Babble Node" as Sonic referred to it, allowing him to understand almost all alien languages. On their way to Mezzo Jillion, the sector's largest trading hub, their ship was caught in an asteroid field, the remains of the planet Cemerant-16, which had just been destroyed. Forced to abandon ship, Sonic was sent into the last escape pod by the ship's captain, Oe, which descended into an uninhabited planet's atmosphere.[94]

The planet's evolution and time was hundreds of times faster than that on Mobius, allowing Sonic to watch the planet go from uninhabitable to supporting a technologically advanced race called the Azurites. The Azurites had watched Sonic for what had been millions of years for them, believing him to be a god. When they were technologically advanced enough, they created a device known as the Temporal Decelerator, which allowed them to slow down their time so that they could communicate with Sonic. With communication now possible, the Azurites offered to make Sonic a ship which would allow him to get off the Azurites world and find his way home. Once they disabled the Temporal Decelerator, they were able to create a ship within a matter of seconds by Sonic's time. Sonic then used the ship to begin his journey home.[94]

Sonic's journey lead him to meet up with one of the late Dr. Robotnik's earliest creations - E.V.E. Having convinced E.V.E. to go beyond her programming, Sonic managed to persuade the machine to ascend to the stars. Little did he know this would cause a chain of events leading to the destruction of numerous worlds. Now, almost two years after E.V.E. had left Mobius, her size was nearly that of a planet's, with the power to drain entire worlds of all their metallic substances within fifteen minutes. After a confrontation with Captain Bagbar Breeblebrox and the crew of the Sentelle, Sonic, realizing it was his duty to make amends to stop E.V.E., flew his ship into her hull. Fighting his way through E.V.E.'s defense units, Sonic finally came face to face with her. Sonic managed to convince E.V.E. that her actions made her no better than she was when she first left Mobius, which caused her to decide to collide with the nearest sun and destroy herself.[95][96]

During his time in space, Sonic located Tails' parents on the Bem homeworld of Argentium - Amadeus and Rosemary Prower. Both had been taken by the Bem Ceneca-9009 during Robotnik's original takeover, and Amadeus was de-roboticized. Both had been taken back to the Bem homeworld where they had been living ever since. After breaking Ceneca-9009 out of prison, Sonic was provided with a ship to take him through the Bem's artificial wormhole back to Mobius. The ship however was too small to bring Ceneca-9009 or Tails' parents along, forcing Sonic to return alone.[97]

Return to Mobius[]

High-tech-knothole-spread

Sonic finds that Knothole has changed in his absence, from Sonic the Hedgehog #130.

Having finally made it back home, Sonic quickly to his surprise much had changed in the short time he was gone. While it was mere weeks for Sonic in space, back on Mobius over a year had passed. In Sonic's absence, Dr. Eggman had declared a full-scale war on both the Kingdom of Acorn and the Republic of Station Square. To make matters worse, Eggman had developed two nuclear warheads which he was preparing to launch at both cities. In addition to this, he deployed an army of new-model SWATbots to take out the shield surrounding the radioactive wasteland of Robotropolis, which would result in the waste poisoning Knothole.[98]

After a quick welcome home reception with friends and family, Sonic and the Freedom Fighters departed immediately to stop Eggman from launching the warheads, while the Chaotix, Amy Rose and G.U.N. went to stop the robotic hordes from taking down Robotropolis' force field.[99] In the harbor of Old Megaopolis, Sonic first encountered Eggman's robotic "daughter", Mecha, while Tails struggled to outsmart Eggman's computer-virus "son" A.D.A.M..[100] Shortly before the missiles launched, Bunnie successfully destroyed the aircraft carrier which was harboring them, though this was only due to the fact that Tails distracted A.D.A.M. long enough for her to act.[101]

Sallybreakup

Sonic gets a harsh breakup from Sally, from Sonic the Hedgehog #134.

Shortly after this, Sonic spent time getting used to his old home of Knothole with friends. The next few days however proved just as difficult for the blue blur. Sonic and Sally suffered a heart-wrenching breakup,[102] and Sonic's father was temporarily killed by a Tommy Turtle Auto Automaton Sonic had found and brought home, believing it to be the real Tommy.[103][104] However, things took a better turn when Sonic and Sally found the real Tommy Turtle and rescued him from Dr. Eggman's clutches.[105]

Fighting the Eggman Empire[]

When Knuckles received word that his father Locke had been captured by the Dingo Regime, which placed the location of the Master Emerald in jeopardy, Sonic accompanied him and the Chaotix to Angel Island to launch a rescue mission. Sonic's assistance resulted in the liberation of one of the many concentration camps and the successful rescue of Locke.[106][107][108][109]

Shortly afterwards, Sonic found himself pursuing Shadow the Hedgehog into a mysterious underground bunker. Unbeknownst to him, Dr. Eggman was equally interested in this bunker, and sent the recreated Metal Sonic to discover its secrets as well as defeat both Sonic and Shadow.[110][111] The trio went head-to-head while Tails and the other Freedom Fighters discovered the history of Mobius from the ancient robot Isaac. Eventually, Metal Sonic and Isaac allied while Sonic and Shadow formed a temporary alliance in order to stop Isaac from launching a nuclear missile. With Shadow's help, Sonic managed to prevent the missile from launching and defeated Metal Sonic.[112][113][114]

Evil Sonic's Mischievousness[]

Boomer03

Sonic reveals his true identity to Boomer, from Sonic the Hedgehog #151.

Using a device created by Anti Rotor, Evil Sonic managed to transport himself to the prime zone and knock Sonic unconscious. He then dressed himself in Sonic's attire while dressing Sonic in his and dumped him in Anti Mobius while replacing Sonic in the prime zone. Upon awakening, Sonic woke up to the Anti Freedom Fighters beating on him. Shortly afterwards however he managed to subdue them and use Anti Rotor's device to return to the prime zone. However, even after his defeat, Evil Sonic managed to remain in the prime zone.[115][116]

On Sonic's birthday, he found himself confronted first by Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polar Bear, though the two bounty hunters were quickly defeated, the former by Shadow and the latter by giving up. Not long afterwards Sonic found himself facing off against the new Badnik Croctobot.[117] After Evil Sonic arrived on the scene, having recently been mutated into Scourge, Sonic, and Shadow quickly destroyed Croctobot with Scourge's help, only to get by Scourge after. Eventually, Sonic and Shadow forced Scourge and Rouge the Bat to flee via a mysterious Warp Ring.[118]

The Darkest Storm[]

Following the Scourge fiasco, Sonic and the other Freedom Fighters were surprised to see Tails' uncle Merlin Prower arrive on the scene with Sir Connery. Merlin was hoping to use the powers of the Source of All from King Max's crown to ensure Mammoth Mogul remained trapped inside a Chaos Emerald. However, before he could do this, the Arachne Clan released Ixis Naugus from the Egg Grape Chambers, the dimensional breach killed the Ancient Walkers and allowing Mammoth Mogul to escape confinement.[119] Soon afterwards, Sonic, the Freedom Fighters, the Chaotix, Merlin and Sir Connery found themselves facing off against the Destructix, the Arachne Clan, Ixis Naugus and Mammoth Mogul. When Sir Connery sacrificed himself to render the Sword of Acorns and the Crown of Acorns powerless and wound Mammoth Mogul, the tides seemed to shift into the allies' favor. However, Dr. Eggman's Egg Fleet soon arrived on the scene and captured Mogul, Naugus, the Destructix and the Arachne Clan, sending them to the Egg Grape Chambers. Sonic assumed Eggman would continue his attack, but Eggman stated he would crush Sonic and the Freedom Fighters on his own terms before returning to New Megaopolis.[120][121]

Battle with A.D.A.M., Tommy's Sacrifice[]

Following the capture of Mammoth Mogul and his followers, Anonymous revealed himself to in fact be Dr. Eggman's computer-virus "son" A.D.A.M. Before Eggman could erase A.D.A.M.'s programming, the latter transferred his files to the nanites on Tommy's back. A.D.A.M. then proceeded to use the nanites to control Sonic's father Jules into bringing Tails to his super beacon, while forcing Eggman to contact Shadow to arrive there as well. A.D.A.M. then had both Super Shadow and Turbo Tails locked inside the beacon and used their immense powers to pull all of the Chaos Emeralds from throughout the universe to Mobius.[122]

Super A.D.A.M.

Sonic had followed his father to the beacon and moved in to stop A.D.A.M. before he could complete his schemes, Sonic using the Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Sonic. Though Sonic had the upper hand against A.D.A.M. even when the latter used the Chaos Emeralds to transform as well, Sonic found himself unwilling to attack Tommy Turtle, who A.D.A.M. was using as a host body as Tommy had come into contact with the nanites. Fortunately, Tommy managed to briefly gain control of his body and tell Sonic to let him die. The Egg Fleet soon arrived on the scene and Tommy was subsequently killed in front of Sonic's eyes. Shortly before his death, Tails and Shadow used their Chaos powers to open a portal to the Zone of Silence and send all of the Chaos Emeralds into that zone, thus causing The Great Harmony.[123]

Final Missions in Knothole[]

Following A.D.A.M.'s defeat, Sonic and Tails journeyed into the Zone of Silence in hopes of finding a Chaos Emerald to help the ailing King Acorn. To their surprise, they found that the Zone had been transformed into the Special Zone by Feist, a former minion of Ixis Naugus'. In return for their help in providing him with his new power, Feist gave the two one of the newly formed seven Chaos Emeralds, which was quickly used to revive King Acorn. They then accompanied Merlin Prower and Knuckles to Argentium, which had become the site of a battle between the warring Xorda and Black Arms. Sonic quickly fetched Tails' parents, and the Prower family was reunited before the whole group returned to Mobius.[124]

Saltshaker

Sonic overhears Amy accusing Fiona, from Sonic the Hedgehog #172.

Sonic then teamed up with Shadow once again when the latter arrived in Knothole, pursued by Snively and carrying the diary of Gerald Robotnik, his creator. While Knuckles held off Snively, the two Hedgehogs entered the virtual world of the diary using the Particle-To-Light Organizer and Transporter Device, where Sonic was treated to Shadow's history as a joint creation of Gerald and Black Doom, leader of the Black Arms. Doom's intention was that Shadow would be his ultimate weapon when he returned in fifty years time to invade Mobius, but Gerald hoped that he would instead protect Mobius from the aliens. With Shadow's questions satisfied, the two returned to reality and Sonic set out in search of Fiona Fox.[125] He came upon her dueling Amy Rose, and heard from Fiona's own mouth that she had fallen in love with Scourge the Hedgehog, who then appeared. The two Hedgehogs briefly battled before Scourge departed with Fiona, leaving behind Sonic and a broken-hearted Tails.[126]

Around this time, Sonic was captured and defeated by Metal Sonic, who took him back to New Megaopolis. There, he was fitted with a motion control earpiece that allowed Eggman to manipulate his actions whilst Sonic remained capable of speaking. Dispatched to attack Knothole, he handily defeated the Freedom Fighters and Chaotix before running into Knuckles, who with a little help from Tails was able to defeat Sonic. The friends then teamed up to defeat the arriving Metal Sonic and Dr. Eggman, driving the doctor off and destroying Metal Sonic.[127]

Not long afterwards, Sonic was witness as Antoine proposed to Bunnie, congratulating Antoine on his finally getting up the courage to act on his feelings for her. The happy moment was interrupted by a message from Knuckles, who had learned that Rouge was apparently auctioning off the Master Emerald. Teaming up with the couple and Sally, Sonic sped off to investigate, only to run into Nack the Weasel, Bark the Polar Bear, and Bean the Dynamite, all of whom were sent to investigate the auction by Dr. Eggman. Sonic and his friends defeated the trio only to run into Mammoth Mogul and Ixis Naugus, who had also come in search of the Emerald. Once they had been defeated, Rouge revealed that the auction had been a hoax designed to lure in such criminals so that she could capture them and impress Knuckles. That business over with, Sonic graciously agreed to be Antoine's best man at the upcoming wedding.[128] At about the same time he, Tails, and Knuckles found a hidden community of Chao at the old Power Ring Grotto, even befriending one whom he nicknamed Chronic, only for it to come under attack by Eggman. The three defeated Eggman soundly and then moved the Chao to the Lake of Rings where they would be better protected.[129][130] Afterwards, he attended Antoine and Bunnie's wedding with the other inhabitants of Knothole.[131]

Invasion of the Eggman Empire[]

Soniciseggbeaten

Sonic is unable to stand up to the Egg Beater, from Sonic the Hedgehog #175.

Not long after A.D.A.M.'s destruction, Eggman finally decided to use the Egg Fleet and destroy Knothole. When the invasion of Knothole began, Snively began by attacking Freedom HQ, sending everyone but Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Amy and Nicole to the Egg Grape Chambers. While the latter four were trapped under the rubble of Freedom HQ, Sonic ran as quickly as he could to warn the others of the invasion. Just as he arrived at the front gates, the Acorn Castle exploded. Emerging from the wreckage was Dr. Eggman in his Egg Beater battle armor. Eggman proceeded to insult Sonic while utterly beating him. Sonic, pushed to the edge, attempted to take out the Egg Beater with a single attack by running at it at full speed from the other end of the continent. The attack merely dented the Egg Beater's shield, and Sonic was left bruised and beaten as Eggman left him in the ruins of Knothole.[132]

Sonic refused to accept defeat however, and had originally intended on rescuing everyone by himself, telling Tails and the others to remain behind where they would be safe. Tails, furious at this, lashed out at Sonic. The two's bickering was interrupted by Nicole, who stated she had a plan. The five headed out on a saucer-shaped vessel created by Tails to New Megaopolis to rescue their friends and families. Just as they arrived at the Egg Vineyard, Charmy Bee's Egg Grape Chamber was activated. However, Sonic managed to break him free just in time to prevent long-term damage. After Knuckles and Amy freed everyone from their Egg Grape Chambers, Eggman returned to the scene to prevent their escape. Unbeknownst to him, Nicole, who had managed to take control of the former nanite city, also altered the weapons on the Egg Beater and Egg Fleet to transport the Mobians to the newly formed city of New Mobotropolis instead of back to the Egg Grapes. Sonic managed to distract Eggman long enough for Nicole to change the programming, then allowed himself to be transported along with the others to New Mobotropolis.[133]

Not long after being transported to their new city, the Mobians found themselves relying on the city's shields to protect them from the attacking Egg Fleet. Sonic decided to challenge Eggman once again, this time with assistance from the Knothole Freedom Fighters and the Chaotix. Their combined might allowed them to defeat the Egg Beater, which was designed specifically to fight Sonic. Eggman then fled the scene.[134]

Sonic vs. Tails[]

Sonic, having previously been dating Fiona Fox, caused a strain on his and Tails' friendship. This became even when it was revealed that she preferred the evil Scourge over the good Sonic. This stress ultimately caused the two to be on opposite sides of a political schism in the Kingdom of Acorn, Tails supporting the side led by his father and Sonic remaining loyal to the House of Acorn. When Tails helped his mother break Amadeus out of jail, long suppressed hostility was released as he and Sonic fought with each other.[135]

Tails was quick to bring up his fury at Sonic's lack of sensitivity, and refused to explain it to the baffled Hedgehog since he felt that Sonic would probably just ignore what he was saying again. Finally, the young Fox revealed that his main dispute with Sonic was over Fiona and Sonic's seeming dismissal of his feelings for her, and Sonic admitted that he had known about Tails' feelings and apologized, explaining that he had hoped that it would help Tails get over his crush. Reconciled, the two headed off to stop a duel between Amadeus and Elias Acorn, only to find out that Sally had beaten them to it.[136]

Enerjak's Rebirth[]

Following the battle with Tails and the creation of the Council of Acorn, Sonic found himself facing off against Dr. Eggman's newest creation, the Egg Nautilus. Eggman had hoped to use the tentacles of his new machine to implant a virus into Nicole and erase her. Sonic was able to stop Eggman's attempts by informing him that Enerjak was about to return. Eggman, realizing this posed a much more serious threat, formed a temporary alliance with Sonic so the two could stop the returning Enerjak. Shortly after Eggman departed, Nicole informed Sonic there was trouble at the Acorn Airport. Racing over there, he found the Chaotix attacking the guards and demanding they be allowed to leave in order to find the missing Knuckles. After fending off against them, Sonic soon realized that the Chaotix should be free to search for Knuckles, and ended the fight. To satisfy both Sally's wishes for the Chaotix to remain within the safety of New Mobotropolis, and Julie-Su's desire to find Knuckles, Sonic and Tails were sent out on the Tornado to Angel Island.[137]

Sonic and Tails arrived at Angel Island hoping to find Knuckles. Realizing Knuckles was not at the chamber of the Master Emerald, they began searching the rest of the island. Soon they found that Enerjak had already been reborn and had not only completely removed the Dingo Regime and killed Kage Von Stryker, but had removed all of the Dark Legion's cybernetic enhancements and teleported the vast majority of surviving Echidnas to the ruins of Albion. Just before Sonic could attack him, Enerjak teleported away to New Mobotropolis. Sonic contacted New Mobotropolis before picking up Tails and racing back as fast as he could. Sonic and Tails arrived back at New Mobotropolis just in time to see Enerjak there, who had already disabled the city's shields.[138]

Sonicsavesu

Sonic rescues a distraught Julie-Su from Enerjak, from Sonic the Hedgehog #182.

Shortly after Sonic arrived back in New Mobotropolis, he found himself beside Shadow the Hedgehog, who had responded to Sally's distress call while Sonic and Tails were on Angel Island. Both Sonic and Shadow attempted to face off against Enerjak, but were no match for the Chaos demigod. It was during this confrontation that Sonic discovered Knuckles actually was Enerjak, and was under the influence of Dr. Finitevus. After being beaten by Enerjak, Dr. Eggman arrived on the scene and transported the Chaos demigod to the Egg Grape Chambers to use as a living battery to power his city. Before Sonic and the others could come up with a plan to rescue Knuckles, he and Julie-Su were pulled onto Angel Island via Warp Ring by Knuckles' father Locke, who had recruited the two to defeat the Destructix and retrieve the Brotherhood of Guardians special weapon to stop Enerjak.[139]

Sonic, Julie-Su and Locke managed to evade the Destructix with the help of Archimedes and located the secret weapon. Instead of allowing it to be used however, Sonic destroyed it, since its use would have not only stopped Enerjak, but caused Knuckles' death. Sonic quickly headed towards the Master Emerald and used its power to transform into Super Sonic before Enerjak had a chance to recharge.[140] With his new invulnerability and super powers, Super Sonic went head to head with Enerjak. While Enerjak was distracted battling Super Sonic, Locke sacrificed his own life to break the hex Dr. Finitevus placed on the Master Emerald. This resulted in Knuckles losing his powers and returning to normal.[141]

Mogul's Rise and Schemes[]

After the Enerjak rampage, Mina Mongoose finally returned from her world tour. Ash Mongoose, Mina's boyfriend, apologized to Sonic for being a jerk to him back when he thought Mina was still in love with him. Sonic then took Mina to the ruins of Knothole and to the new Freedom HQ. Nicole told Sonic that Mammoth Mogul wanted to see him at the detention center. Sonic went there only to be told to allow Mogul to be released, otherwise he would make a new Fearsome Foursome. Sonic, who thought this was a joke, chuckled and left. While everyone was sleeping however, Mogul used his powers to call upon the ones he had "marked" in the past. This included Mina, Mighty the Armadillo and Tails. The fourth member would be a convinced Sonic. With Sonic's friends now under mind control, Mogul attempted to have them defeat Sonic.[142]

MightyPuppet

Sonic dodges a Mogul-controlled Mighty, from Sonic the Hedgehog #186.

When they were unable to do this, Mogul threatened to have them all commit suicide, Tails by flying too high until he ran out of oxygen and fell to his death, Mina would run out into the middle of the ocean then stop and drown, and Mighty would march into New Megaopolis, defenseless and be killed by the Dark Egg Legion. Sonic understood that Mogul had him cornered and unless he did as Mogul asked his three friends would die. Mogul offered to return Sonic's three friends in exchange for the Chaos Emerald held in New Mobotropolis. With the help of Ash, Sonic retrieved the emerald and gave it to Mogul. Surprisingly, the tyrant kept his word. With the power of the Chaos Emerald merged with him, Mogul regained his powers. He freed the other prisoners in New Mobotropolis and explained to Sonic that, while he senses fate will not allow him to defeat Sonic once and for all, he is immortal once more and will spend his time making Sonic's life miserable. On that note, he teleported away, taking the other villains with him.[143]

Mogul then took over Robotnik's old Casino Night Zone and changed it to his own image. Scratch, Grounder, and Coconuts along with other outdated Badniks were recruited by Mogul as well as the Destructix. Mogul said to the Destructix that he will pay them handsomely for Sonic's shoes. He told them that it was up to them if his feet were still in them. Meanwhile Tails' uncle Merlin removed Mogul's curses from Tails, Mina, and Mighty. Additionally he purged any possible curses from Sonic and Knuckles, stating he wanted to ensure that the hex Dr. Finitevus put on the Master Emerald didn't have any lasting effects. Following Merlin's departure, Sonic spent some time talking alone with Sally about their past and feelings for one another. Their conversation was interrupted by Bean and Bark and the Destructix. Eventually, Sonic was knocked out by a shot from Nack the Weasel, who then gave Sally ten seconds to run for help while Sonic was dragged off by the Destructix.[144] Sonic was soon liberated by Sally Acorn, Amy Rose, and Geoffrey . When the heroes confront Mogul however, he denies all claims of wrong-doing as his accusers lack any incontrovertible evidence. Sonic and his friends were then sent away, publicly humiliated.[12]

Dealing with the Suppression Squad[]

Following the Casino Night fiasco, Sonic, Knuckles and the Chaotix were sent to New Megaopolis to deal with the Dark Egg Legion. During their absence, the Suppression Squad came to Mobius Prime via the Star Posts and began attacking Freedom HQ. The Chaotix felt they could deal with the Dark Egg Legion alone, and sent Sonic back to Freedom HQ in response to their distress call. However, after Sonic left, Dimitri showed up in a massive robotic body looking like a praying mantis, to which Vector stated it was likely not a wise idea to send Sonic away after all. Sonic arrived back at Freedom HQ just as Scourge, self-declared King of Moebius following his successful invasion of the planet, emerged.[145] Sonic and Scourge battled, as did the rest of their respective gangs. Unfortunately, they found themselves matched blow-for-blow, and the repeated use of energy weapons took it's toll on the base. Rather than loose the base (and by extension their lives), Sally convinced Sonic to have them retreat. Scourge's taunting, however, enraged Sonic to the point he assured his friends and the Chaotix, returning from their successful mission, the Squad would only occupy the base temporarily.[146]

A couple of days later, Sonic, having rested up and prepared for a counterattack, went before the Acorn Council with Knuckles, only to find them in debate over whether to re-take Freedom HQ. In the end, the Council (save for Uncle Chuck and Rotor) voted to focus their attacks on the weakened Eggman Empire and re-take the base later. Sonic refused to accept their decision, and later prepared to take the base back with Knuckles. Sonic was surprised to find Knuckles supporting the Council. His efforts to convince him that he privately didn't agree with them and he must do what he thought was right led to Knuckles yelling at Sonic that he already did so, and now his father was dead, and walk away in tears, telling Sonic to do what he wanted. Sonic decided to take Freedom HQ back on his own. As he arrived at Freedom HQ, Sonic discovered Scourge was battling a new version of Metal Sonic. Offering a temporary truce to help defeat the robot duplicate, Scourge declined. Shortly afterwards, Dr. Eggman dispatched his new metal duplicate, Metal Scourge.[147]

Metal Sonic and Metal Scourge together proved more difficult to defeat for Sonic and Scourge, thus Sonic started helping Scourge out. Sonic then told Scourge to call his squad but Scourge didn't want their help. Eventually however, as the battle began getting worse, The Suppression Squad joins the battle as Scourge's request, resulting in the destruction of the robotic-duplicates. Sonic proceeds back to New Mobotropolis, only to learn he is being sent on a mission of invade Moebius, his punishment being Amy Rose joining him on the mission.[148]

As Sonic and Amy got ready to go into Moebius, Rotor informed them that they will end up in a random location on Moebius. Sonic and Amy wind up in Moebius near Dr. Ivo Kintobor base. Soon, Sonic and Amy found themselves under attack by what seemed to be a giant robot, though the battle was stopped by the kindly Kintobor, who explained the robot was in fact an Omega Care Unit keeping Buns Rabbot alive. After explaining Scourge's invasion of Moebius and their please for help, Buns suggested seeking out Rosy the Rascal as she detested Scourge, though Julian was opposed to this as she was apparently mentally unstable. Meanwhile, Miles from the Suppression Squad was sent to bomb New Mobotropolis. The Freedom Fighters arrive on the scene, only to see that Miles is actually willing to propose an alliance against Scourge. After Miles explains how Scourge took over there world, Sally agrees on helping him. Despite this, Sonic, Amy and Buns set out to locate Rosy, eventually discovering her in Moebius' version of Castle Acorn. After a brief conversation, Sonic and Amy soon learned how crazy Rosy was when she attacked them.[149]

Buns and Amy fended off Rosy, while Sonic went back to Mobius for assistance. However, the Freedom Fighters and Suppression Squad were too busy fighting off Scourge the Hedgehog. When Sonic tried to stomp Scourge, he was blocked by Fiona. She told him that she stopped trusting everyone around her. Sonic than corrected her, saying she was fighting hard for Scourge. Furious, Fiona started crying and attacking Sonic. Amy then shouted at Sonic to hurry back to Moebius, before Rosy went any more crazier. But before he went back, he ran in another room and punched Scourge. Afterwards, they were both blasted by Boomer and thrown back into Moebius by Miles. Afterwards, Boomer shut down the star posts; therefore, Sonic and Scourge couldn't come back to Mobius. As soon as Sonic got up, he was attacked by Rosy, who stopped Amy and Buns.[150]

The fight is interrupted when Shadow arrives by using Chaos Control. Though he was actually looking for the Special Zone, Sonic asked if he wanted to help him to defeat Scourge, to which he reply's "sure". Metal Sonic arrived shortly after, followed by Silver the Hedgehog and Rob O' the Hedge. The group of hedgehogs then got involved in a massive brawl, including Amy and Rosy. During the battle, Silver became confused because he could not determine which of the hedgehogs was Sonic. After Silver attempted to find out who Sonic was by asking, he eventually found out who it was. He proceeded to attack Sonic but was stopped by Rob O' the Hedge who demanded an explanation. After Silver explained, Sonic proposed a truce for everyone to team up against Scourge. In response, Scourge rushed to the throne room, followed by Sonic and Shadow, turning the tables on everyone by turning into Super Scourge using the Anarchy Beryl in his throne.[151]

Andthatswhyyousuck

Sonic forcibly dethrones Scourge, from Sonic the Hedgehog #196.

Super Scourge defeated them, leaving them unconscious and Sonic in his hands. When the Knothole Freedom Fighters and the Suppression Squad (minus Rotor and Fiona) arrived, Super Scourge quickly dispatched them, as the others woke up, Sonic picked himself up, but was quickly attacked by Metal Sonic. Shadow then came and helped Sonic, sending Metal Sonic and himself away to a different zone. Sonic then joined in a dog pile on top of Scourge after Silver tried his psychokinesis on Sally's orders, so they could hold down Super Scourge long enough for him to lose his super form, but Silver's power failed him and Scourge threw the others off of him. While he seemed to be unbeatable, Sonic eventually realized the Anarchy Beryl would have a different (and negative) effect on Scourge to contrast the positive effect the Chaos Emeralds had on him once the transformation ended. Luring Super Scourge away from the others, Sonic managed to trick Super Scourge into de-transforming. As Sonic speculated, the Anarchy Beryl drained him of what energy he had left in his normal form, leaving him vulnerable. Sonic subsequently defeated Scourge and captured him.[152]

Zone Lockdown[]

Teamup!

Sonic and Zonic team-up, from Sonic the Hedgehog #197.

While Sonic was taking Scourge to the Zone Cops via the Cosmic Highway, Scourge broke loose and tried to escape, but he and Sonic were then arrested by Zone Cops Zector the Zone Cop and Zespio the Zone Cop for going through zones during a zone lockdown. The cops then took Sonic and Scourge to see Zonic the Zone Cop via a Warp Ring. They arrive in a ruined No Zone and Scourge managed to escape by kicking the others out of the way and attempted to fully destroy the No Zone. Sonic and the Zone Cops then met up with Zonic and together they battle Scourge. During the battle, Zonic gave Sonic a spatial stabilizer and explained to him that the Zone Cops had been fighting a villain called Dr. Nega, whom Sonic had previously encountered when he was in Blaze's world. They quickly captured Scourge thanks to Sonic's skills and Zonic's special Control Collar. Sonic then asked Zonic when he was taking away Eggman as he was not from Mobius Prime, but Zonic explained he wasn't because Sonic-Prime had to fight a Robotnik. Sonic was then brought back home by Zector and he then returned to his parents to talk.[153]

Battle to Bring Down Eggman[]

The next day, Sonic took part in the advance against the Eggdome, along with the rest of the Knothole Freedom Fighters and the Chaotix. First knocking out Dark Legion troops, Sonic distracted Lien-Da and the Dark Egg Legion while the Chaotix flanked them. While the Chaotix attacked, Sonic spin-dashed through Lien-Da's flying pod. He was then attacked by Lien-Da, who whipped him, but was then saved by Antoine. After the Dark Egg Legion withdrew, Sonic was tossed up into the air by Vector, Knuckles, Tails and Bunnie to get on top of the attacking Egg Phoenix. Distracting Eggman and forcing the vehicle to stall, Sonic then jumped off while Charmy, Saffron and Ray planted the Neutralizing Mines on the Egg Phoenix. Ray then carried Sonic to the ground while the Egg Phoenix crashed. Sonic attempted to capture Eggman from the wreckage, but Eggman escaped in a hover pod. Sonic hoped to continue the attack, but Sally said that was enough for the day, and they would finish the battle tomorrow.[154]

During the night, Sonic was awakened by Shadow the Hedgehog to ask for his assistance in deactivating Eggman's new weapon, a laser capable of destroying the Freedom Fighters' force field, their camp, and half of the Eggdome. Sonic questioned why Eggman would build something so over the top, and Shadow explained that intelligence suggests the doctor is losing his last grasp on reality. Sonic disagreed, citing that Eggman hasn't stooped that far yet. The two hedgehogs and Rouge the Bat attempted to disable the Doom Laser, but accidentally shifted it into firing position. After Shadow destroyed it with his Chaos Control to stop the cannon, Shadow nearly fell off the ruined cannon. But Sonic managed to grab his hand, and stated they weren't going through the whole Shadow falling to his death situation again. Sonic then asked if Shadow was going to join the Freedom Fighters in the final battle against Eggman, to which Shadow replied that he owed Sonic much gratitude and the least he could do is allow Sonic to settle things with the doctor himself. The two shook hands and Sonic departed.[66]

Thefallofeggman

Sonic defeats the Egg Tarantula, from Sonic the Hedgehog #200.

The next day Sonic, the Freedom Fighters, and the Chaotix went on the final assault of the Eggdome. Bunnie and Mighty used their super strength to smash through the wall and Amy knocked Sonic in. Sonic then helped take on the Legion again only to be blocked by a barricade which Espio stated was meant for Sonic to spin dash through the small hole at the bottom. Sonic decided to take the invitation with everyone else coming in after to give him back up, despite Sally's protest, though Sonic reminded her that this was how they usually fought. Sally reluctantly agreed giving Sonic a hug and telling him to be careful before he left. As Sonic rushed in he found the Dark Egg Legion saluting him as he rushed past much to Sonic's confusion. After he entered a large room he found Eggman waiting in his Egg Tarantula.[155]

Victory over Eggman

Victorious, Sonic and the others return home, from Sonic the Hedgehog #200.

While they fought, Sonic taunted Eggman about all the times he won, which only helped to enrage Eggman further. When Sonic finally destroyed the Egg Tarantula, Sonic proclaimed he had won the battle. Dr. Eggman then broke into a fit of rage and insanity, much to Sonic's shock and concern. Sonic frantically attempts to reason with Eggman, but he merely rips off his own mustache and physically tried attack Sonic only to miss by Sonic dodging before throwing a massive temper tantrum. As Sally finally managed to catch up, she questioned Sonic as to what he had done to the doctor, to which he replied "I just beat him like always". Snively then came in and told Sonic that he did not just beat Eggman, he "broke" him and drove a once brilliant genius to insanity. Snively told the Freedom Fighters that he would take care of his uncle and that they had finally won. The Freedom Fighters and the Chaotix came rushing to Sonic, congratulating him, though he felt no pride in the victory. He still had feelings of pity for what he had done to Eggman and confusion as to what he should do next. Sally simply told Sonic to move on to the next adventure. Then, Sonic, the Freedom Fighters, and the Chaotix left New Megapolis in triumph.[156]

The Iron Dominion[]

Later, when a concert was held to celebrate Eggman's defeat, Sally escorted Sonic to the Colosseum, where Mina's band were playing. Sally noticed that Sonic wasn't enjoying himself, and Sonic told her his thoughts on Eggman's breakdown after his defeat. Sally replied that Sonic should focus on the concert for the moment and enjoy himself. However, before the concert could start, Monkey Khan made a violent entrance, criticizing the crowd for celebrating when the rest of the world was still in turmoil. Sonic decided to engage Khan, but before they could get too far, Sally intervened, explaining to Khan that Eggman and his empire had been defeated. To this, Monkey Khan corrected her stating that all they did was change who was in charge, and the Iron Dominion now controlled the Eggman Empire. Sonic and Khan then left to put a premature stop to the Iron Dominion by engaging them head-on.[157]

After entering New Megaopolis, they were immediately confronted by the Dark Egg Legion, though both began to make quick work of them. Lien-Da then showed up, only for M.K to blast and destroy her hovercraft. However, the Yagyu Clan attacked, whom Sonic was unfamiliar with. Unfortunately, they lost the battle after the Iron King arrived with his Tremor Mace and discovered not only Lightning Lynx working for the Iron Dominion, but their former friend Espio to have turned traitor to boot. Sonic and Monkey Khan retreated via Khan's nimbus cloud in defeat.[158] Sonic afterwards sought to cheer up a distraught Khan after defending him from Rory, Snaggle, and Sasha, three orphans who were angry for his attack on the concert. Sonic was then treated to a confession from Khan, who felt inadequate to the expectations placed on him. Both heroes were then forced to deal with a vengeful Iron Queen, who used the power of Magitek to pit Bunnie against the other Freedom Fighters. Fortunately, Khan was able to stop her and free her from the Queen's control, but at the cost of falling under it himself and being set against the city.[159] Sonic managed to free Khan from his mind control by getting a Power Ring from the Lake of Rings. He later was one of the people to comfort Khan.[160]

A bit afterwards, Sonic visited the bed-ridden Bunnie after helping Khan get some flowers for her, (who was also supposed to be in bed himself). He earned a few remarks from Dr. Quack for this. During a conversation, Sonic was informed by Nicole about a threat in the Great Forest. Khan started to go with him but was intervened by Dr. Quack. Sonic told Khan that he would be with him in spirit. Sonic found in the forest, much to his surprise, the still addled Eggman in his Egg-Tortoise. He didn't attack him at all and let Tails take out the Tortoise by shutting it down. Sonic then explained to Tails why he didn't fight Eggman off. Tails didn't think Eggman deserved sympathy but said that didn't mean they should be cruel to Eggman in return. Sonic then attempted to talk to Eggman, only to get a punch in the face. After Eggman fainted in exhaustion, Sonic and Tails attempted to lift him when the Iron Dominion's forces appeared. Sonic told Tails to get Eggman back to New Mobotropolis.[161] He then took out the Dark Legionnaires and the Yagyu ninja's taunting them. He was then stopped quickly by the Iron King who subdued him with one stroke of his Tremor Mace. Before they could do anything else, the Knothole Freedom Fighters then appeared. They instantly attacked the Iron King by ramming a hover saucer into him, allowing Sonic to escape. He teamed up with Tails and took out both the Iron Queen's and Snively's pods. Sonic wished to continue the attack but Sally ordered a retreat. When the Iron Dominion gave chase, Sonic proceeded to carry Sally, Amy, Tails, and Antoine over into the safety of New Mobotropolis. Sonic then later visited the deranged Doctor Eggman, convincing him that the "Great War" is still going on and he's in protective custody. He then told a watching Khan why he was sympathetic to the Doctor, which actually earned a little respect in Khan's eyes. Sonic then thanked Khan for bringing Bunnie to the edge of New Mobotropolis to taunt the Iron Dominion earlier.[162]

Sonic tries to calm down the citizens of New Mobotropolis during the Iron Dominion's assault, from Sonic the Hedgehog #207.

Sonic then assisted the Mes Braves Battalion at Fort Acorn when they were under attack by the Iron King. He managed to get Amadeus Prower away from the Iron King and into a nanite-powered vehicle manned by Tails. Sonic then ran quickly around the ground so that it would cave in around the Iron King, entrapping him until he could figure out a way to defeat him. However, the Iron King easily broke free but before he could attack the hedgehog, Monkey Khan stepped in. While the two traded remarks on the title of "King". Sonic remarked he would wait until they were ready to fight. The duo then attempted to take on the Iron King but were easily beaten, though they managed to escape before he could kill them. The Iron King, moved over to the shield over Robotropolis attempting to smash it down. Sonic and Khan then talked of how they could defeat him and when Khan mentioned that the Iron King wasn't that bright, Sonic gained an idea. He told Khan to keep the Iron King busy for awhile. Sonic ran over to the Power Siphon, and since the Siphon had a link to New Mobotropolis, he asked for Nicole. They overheard a smash but Sonic stated he needed her help fast. He then went over to the Iron King, stating that they give up. He then told him about the Siphon and explained that they were cutting their losses by making sure the nearby environment was safe. When the Iron King started smashing, he explained to Khan that the Iron King was just smashing an empty shell as Nicole remade the Siphon underground. Satisfied, they left for home. They arrived to find Sally, who said Nicole told her everything and congratulated the two. After a few joking remarks from both Khan and Sonic on their job, Sally took Khan aside for a talk. Stunned, Sonic was right then asked by Amy if she could find out about his new adventure over dinner. Sonic quickly gave a glance back at Sally and Khan before going with Amy for a meal at Uncle Chuck's.[163]

Later, Sonic and Tails were discussing the current situation when an alarm sounded to signal the approach of the Iron Dominion. Sonic, Tails, Sally, and Khan converged on the spot where Nicole had manifested her hologram, where she informed them of what was going on. As Sally and Khan worried over the nature of the attack, Sonic watched them with a disapproving look at their closeness. When the Iron Dominion took over Nicole, Sonic, Tails, Sally, and Khan would later escape New Mobotropolis in an attempt to restore Nicole.[164] After using a digitizer to get into the city's mainframe, Sonic attacked the Iron Queen's digital form while Sally used a firewall to talk to Nicole. Sally and Nicole then devised a plan, to attack the Iron Dominion's reinforcements overseas before attacking the Iron Dominion's forces directly. After Nicole told Sally that she would stall the Iron Queen with her Iron persona, Sally and Sonic left the digital world and informed Tails and Khan about the plan. Sonic, Tails, Sally, and Khan then left once more for the Dragon Kingdom.[165]

Journey To The East[]

Gossamertemple

Sonic in the Dragon Kingdom, from Sonic Universe #13.

Soon after their arrival at Stormtop Village, Sally, Tails and Monkey Khan were captured by the Gossamer Clan to ensure Sonic's willingness to meet with the Bride of the Endless Reach. Sonic went to the Gossamer Clan's lair being led by one of the ninjas themselves, and his friends were released upon his arrival. Despite Sonic's interruptions, Sally and Monkey Khan managed to convince the Bride of the Endless Reach to turn against the Iron Dominion so their could be peace with the Free People. They all returned to the Temple of the Golden Lotus and were given food and drink, but their enjoyment at turning one of the clans was short-lived as the Yagyu Clan wished to meet with them.[166]

After being ambushed by several Yagyu members, who believed the four heroes were travelers, Sonic & co. traveled with one member to their headquarters. Sonic and Tails were then ejected from a meeting with the Yagyu Lord, who felt uncomfortable having Sonic in his lair or discussing business in front of a child like Tails, and were then approached by Fiona Fox and the original Fearsome Foursome, minus Lightning Lynx.[167] Sonic and Tails briefly battled the quartet and were aided by Sally and Khan before Fiona called a cease of hostilities. Revealing that she had taken over leadership of the Destructix, Fiona explained that they planned to recover Lightning Lynx from the Raiju Clan, and desired a truce with the Freedom Fighters. Reluctantly-and with heated contention between Fiona and Sally-the two teams stormed the Iron Fortress where the Raiju Clan had established themselves. After fighting through a number of Raiju warriors, they found the Bride of Conquering Storm, who refused to break away from the Iron Dominion unless Monkey Khan's party could prove themselves worthy. Khan proposed a dual of champions to decide the clan's fate, and asked Sonic to represent their side in battle against Lightning. After defeating the Lynx, whom he apologized to for humiliating him in front of his clan, Sonic and the others left the Iron Fortress in the hands of the Raiju Clan, the Destructix leaving to pursue their own agenda. As the group considered how to go about contacting the Shinobi Clan, Espio appeared to offer them his help.[168]

The Fall of the Iron Dominion[]

Sonicdragon

Sonic prepares to end the Iron Queen's rule, from Sonic the Hedgehog #211.

Later, their mission in the Dragon Kingdom completed, Sonic and his teammates returned to New Mobotropolis to confront the Iron Queen.[169] They arrived just in time to aid Amy, Antoine, and Geoffrey St. John, and were aided in turn as Nicole revealed her true colors by attempting to capture the Iron Queen. Sonic made the first move, knocking down the Iron King only to be embraced by a joyful Amy. While Khan announced to the Yagyu that their clan had broken ties with the Dominion, Sonic joined the others in a mass assault on the Iron King, who despite their combined efforts refused to fall. Khan remarked that the only reliable way to defeat him was with the Fan of Fen Xing, and both were then surprised as Espio appeared between them with the magic artifact in question. Allowing Khan the honor of defeating the Iron King, Sonic let out a parting shot as the Iron King was blown out of New Mobotropolis. The Iron Queen, her allies scattered, then took control of a large number of nanites in order to create a giant mechanical dragon in which to make her escape. However, attacks by Tails, Amy, and finally Sonic brought the machine down, allowing the Iron Queen to be taken into custody.[170]

A week later, Sonic took Tails and Nicole's handheld form to the Eggdome, apparently the latest in a series of almost obsessive searches for the missing Dr. Robotnik. Failing to locate their hidden enemy, the pair did detect a signal coming from a locked storage room, where they found Dimitri trapped in a box. The pair took him back to New Mobotropolis for treatment, Sonic rushing off just in time to meet Sally as she returned from the Dragon Kingdom. He was then surprised as she asked him to join her for lunch, remarking that it would be "just like old times."[171]

Travels, Troubles and Team-Ups[]

Sth213 2 5

Queen Hathor yells at Sonic and Big, from Sonic the Hedgehog #213.

After the defeat of the dominion, Lupe invited Sonic and Sally to become honorary members of the new Wolf Pack Nation, and so the two flew to Soumerca. This led the duo into a conflict between the Wolves—under Lupe as Grand Chief—and the Felidae—under Queen Hathor—as each accused the other of stealing a sacred artifact known as the Ancient Onyx. With some help from Big, the pair were able to uncover the thieves as a chapter of the Dark Egg Legion led by their old enemy Drago Wolf and a disgraced Felidae named Razorklaw, whose troops consisted of former members of both cultures. With some careful negotiation on Sonic's part, the Wolves and Felidae were persuaded to first cooperate, and then peacefully settle custody of the recovered Ancient Onyx. Sonic, Sally, and Big were then inducted into the Pack in a ceremony over the Ancient Onyx, though Sally expressed fears to Sonic that the strange artifact might be a Chaos Emerald. Sonic, however, said its power didn't feel right.[172][173]

Upon returning home, Sonic learned that the Arctic Freedom Fighters required backup in a mission to save the Walrus Herd from a new Dark Egg Legion chapter and volunteered to help. He initially assumed that Rotor would be accompanying him, but was informed rudely by Hamlin that Rotor would be remaining in the city to fulfill his duties on the Council, and Rotor apparently agreed with Hamlin's assessment. Sonic subsequently traveled to the Northern Tundra alone, reuniting with Guntiver and his teammates before being informed that he would assist in a land-based operation against the Legion-held city of Iceborough. After learning of the Walrus Herd's high standing in the region, the reason for Robotnik's repeated attacks on the area, Sonic attempted to make light of the situation, though his jokes met with little appreciation.[174] He and his allies then arrived at their destination, where the brainwashed Walrus Herd-influenced by a Psionic Emitter device atop the Egg Totem and the Legion's sonar abilities-waited with various weapons to greet their would-be rescuers. Sealia, Flip and Augustus head underwater to attack the totem from below while he, Erma and Guntiver tried to get passed the Walrus Herd from above and assault the top. After much fighting, Rotor and Silver the Hedgehog appeared and the latter managed to save the day by permanently restoring the Walrus Herd back to normal and blowing out some of the implants used by the orcas. Sonic and his friends then had a celebratory dinner in Iceborough before returning to New Mobotropolis.[175]

Itwasagoodday

"It was a good day, Bunnie," from Sonic the Hedgehog #218.

When another call for aid came in—this time from the Sand Blasters—Sonic joined Bunnie in heading towards the Great Desert. Neither was especially looking forward to seeing the Sand Blasters again. However, just outside Sand Blast City, Bunnie's cybernetics failed and she and Sonic were separated. Sonic went on to the city itself and accused the Sand Blasters of attacking Bunnie; however, their leader Jack Rabbit explained their current situation and claimed that it was likely that the local branch of the Dark Egg Legion had captured Bunnie. According to Jack, the Legion was made up of the city's former Robians who had willingly sided with Eggman after returning to normal and were now operating the Oil Ocean Refinery nearby. Jack made Sonic an offer: if he were to help the Sand Blasters take over the refinery, they'd help rescue Bunnie. Sonic agreed, though as they headed out the next day, he spotted Bunnie among the Legion and left to rescue her... not realizing that she was in fact not a prisoner. As it turned out, the Legion's Grandmaster was none other than her long-lost uncle Beauregard Rabbot, and Bunnie feared for his safety. Sonic came to realize that the Legion's situation was more sympathetic than Jack had made it out to be, but he and Bunnie realized that there would be suffering if either side won. The two then decided on a third option: they staged an intense mock-battle within the refinery, damaging as much of it as they could in order to render it unusable to either side. Eventually their ruse was discovered, but a final explosion still forced both sides to give up the fight; Bunnie's uncle felt betrayed by his niece until Sonic pointed out that the Legion could place all the blame on himself. Still, due to circumstances, Beauregard and Bunnie were forced to part ways. While Bunnie was saddened to have lost her only family after having finally found him again, Sonic convinced her that, all things considered, they had been successful in many ways, including helping her uncle out of a difficult spot. After cheering her up, the two set off for home.[176][177]

Betrayal, Concert, & A Date[]

When the addled King Max assigned Geoffrey St. John the task of restoring the monarchy, the skunk decided to acquire a Chaos Emerald in order to let the senile former king believe change was coming. To this end, he had Sonic accompany him to the Special Zone. Once there, Feist challenged the two to race for the purple Chaos Emerald. After Sonic got the emerald, Geoffrey shot him in the back with a stun dart. Geoffrey booted the hedgehog into the abyss, took the Chaos Emerald, and left the zone.[178] Sonic was left falling helplessly until he managed to convince the Feist to give him a challenge that would allow him to escape. Amused, Feist complied, and Sonic managed to get himself out of the zone and back to New Mobotropolis. Once there, he informed the Council of Acorn of Geoffrey's actions, but none could be sure of the skunk's intentions or future plans. Sonic also informed the Freedom Fighters of Geoffrey's apparent betrayal.[179]

When the Forget Me Knots announced a new concert, Sonic decided that with Eggman still missing and Geoffrey unaccounted for, there was no point in stressing out over unknowns. He attempted to convince Sally to relax as well as they waited among the crowd before the concert, and the two discussed their relationship. They were soon joined by Nicole, who admitted she had some concerns about being "out" in public because she felt the citizens were uneasy about her. Sonic found this ridiculous, saying she should always feel welcome, though Nicole remained uneasy. Sonic again attempted to convince everyone that this was a chance for them to let their worries go for the time being. However, things soon fell apart as Mina's songs, affected secretly by Ixis Naugus, turned the crowd against Nicole; the A.I. became distraught and fled the concert, despite Sally's attempts to talk with her. Concerned, Sally and Sonic went to speak with Mina after the concert; thanks to the influence of Naugus, tempers soon flared as Mina explained that she felt that Sally and the others were being irresponsible, while Sally explained that Nicole was undercover when they left for the Dragon Kingdom and that she was present during the concert. After leaving Mina's trailer and witnessing the fear and hatred of Nicole generated by Mina's concert, a disgusted and indignant Sonic openly wished that Eggman would resurface, if only to see how quickly the people go from distrusting Nicole to begging her to protect them.[180]

Some time later, Sonic and Sally finally arranged for a proper date; Sonic spent the day hanging out with Tails, and later, preparing for his date with advice from Uncle Chuck. However, when he and Sally arrived at the restaurant, things began to go downhill; Sally saw that Mina and Ash were there as well, and admitted that she understood Mina's concerns, wishing she had handled things better earlier. Then the staff began to pester them for answers regarding Nicole, which soon degraded into bickering among the patrons as well. With some help from Amy Rose, Sonic and Sally got away from the crowd and continued their date by the Lake of Rings, teasing about their past relationships and discussing their own.[181]

Naugus’ Coup[]

A few days later, Sally had the Freedom Fighters stake out a free concert by the Forget Me Knots to ensure things didn't get out of hand as they did before. However, Geoffrey St. John suddenly appeared and began to rally the crowd against Nicole, promoting Ixis Naugus as the rightful king able to handle the "threat" of the AI. Sally told Sonic to stop Naugus from reaching the Council. Naugus puts up a crystal wall at the entrance to the castle, preventing Sonic from following. Luckily, Sonic could get through an unblocked window and met Naugus with the council. Sonic informs Elias of what happened with Geoffrey and knows why. Naugus angrily remarks that 'quips and fists' can't overcome his magic. Sonic asks Elias if he could have a 'magical edge' and Elias throws Sonic the Sword of Light. Sonic unsheathes the sword and Ixis replies he cannot stand in the way of justice.[182] Sonic and Naugus traded blows until Sonic loses the sword. Elias picks up the sword but Naugus started using his influence to plant doubts in the king and create tension between the council and Sonic. Then the ground starts to shake, Sonic accusing Naugus of making magical earthquakes but the wizard denies it. They go outside and shockingly discovers that the Death Egg has returned.[183]

Return of the Death Egg[]

Sonic looks up at the sky in disbelief at the Death Egg, realizing that Dr. Eggman's plan to rebuild it was in front of him the whole time. Sally, Sonic and Tails boarded the Tornado while Antoine, Bunnie, Amy and Geoffrey (under watch) took off in the Freedom Fighter Special. Realizing that the Death Egg is actually the former Egg Dome, Sally was able to locate their previous point of entry and directed Tails to fire upon a specific weak point, opening a hole in the hull. Sally and Sonic leaped from the Tornado towards the Death Egg, entering through the breech. It is sealed closed again by a robot, trapping the two inside. They soon found a hidden elevator and begin to explore, finding a strange room. However, the elevator soon delivered a new threat: Silver Sonic v3.0. Sonic was enthralled by the challenge, but as Doctor Eggman began to taunt them over the intercom, Sally realized that the robot was a mere distraction; she announced that they needed to move on, but Sonic continued to battle the robot doppelganger. Sally ran down a hallway, only to find herself facing a turret that deployed from the wall. As gunfire sounded, Sonic turned in alarm; meanwhile, Eggman began Operation: Clean Sweep with the press of a button. While Sonic raced towards Sally, the world became awash in white...[184]

Genesis[]

Sallygenesis

Sonic and Sally meet anew, from Sonic the Hedgehog #226.

Sonic found himself in Green Hill Zone, unable to quite remember what he was doing, but then remembered he was investigating the disappearance of animals. After destroying some Badniks, he eventually came across and destroyed a prison pod that held several trapped animals within. After defeating Snively, he opened another prison pod, releasing even more trapped animals—including Sally Acorn and her friends, "Boomer Walrus" and "Antoine DePardieu." She explained to him they were investigating the kidnappings and recent earthquakes which they thought to be the work of someone called Dr. Eggman, adding that they could use Sonic's help. Sonic was reluctant but changed his mind when Sally knew a quick way to find Dr. Eggman. They traveled through the Marble Zone, finding that things seemed oddly familiar at times. Eventually, they reprogrammed one of Eggman's Buzzbombers to help them; using a willing Flicky as a temporary power source. After fighting more Badniks and escaping a magma flow, Sonic and the Flicky-powered robot ran off ahead, confronting Dr. Eggman himself, who retreated after a quick battle. Sonic then followed the group to an underground passage Sally believed would lead to Eggman's lair, and said being with them seemed right.[185]

Traveling through Labyrinth Zone, Sonic became jealous when he saw Antoine and Sally talk to each other in a romantic way, but was scared when they had to swim to go any further. Sally assured Sonic it would be fine but they were soon attacked by Orbinauts. and Sonic made a spindash through a nearby wall to get them out quickly. They slid down some sort of pipe, and had to jump to a platform to avoid falling to their deaths, except that Sonic missed Antoine's hand when an earthquake hit, and the latter fell into the dark. Remorseful, Sonic apologized to the others, but they believed Antoine was somehow still alright. Fighting their way through more Badniks and traps, they finally arrived in the Scrap Brain Zone. Sonic was electrified by a trap, while Boomer almost fell into a pit, but Sonic and Sally helped him up, and they soon confronted Eggman in some elevator shafts. He trapped Sonic in a force field again, and began to attack the hedgehog with electric balls but was soon washed by the hydraulics system, with Antoine falling in his arms. Sonic then used the distraction to break Eggman's pipe, whereupon he attempted to flee in his Egg Mobile, but a spindash from Sonic made him fall into a pit below. When Sally said that they won, Sonic replied that he felt like it was not over.[186]

SonicandTails02

Sonic and Tails, from Sonic the Hedgehog #228.

Sonic brought the group back to Emerald Hill Zone and introduced them to Tails, and after a big earthquake, the group moved on to shut down the rest of Eggman's bases. In the Chemical Plant Zone, Sonic raced Tails to find the exit, and the group eventually became stuck in a shaft filling with Mega Muck. Sonic opened a door at the top and went back down to save Sally, enjoying with her a brief romantic moment. After the danger was over, Sonic had a brief flashback of the old world and Sally getting shot down. Sonic then decided to go directly to Eggman alone, and he and Tails left the group. As they flew over the Metropolis Zone on the Tornado, Sonic grabbed a radio, telling Tails it was better if they handle things themselves. With this, Sonic jumped off and into the industrial wasteland to find Eggman.[187]

Inside, Sonic fought his way through a horde of Badniks, and began to wish he still had some friendly company with him. Eventually he found Eggman in his Egg Mobile, and a taunt from the doctor caused a memory reaction in Sonic, who stated that this fight between them had gone way longer then just a few days. Eggman, annoyed that Sonic was regaining his memory, then attacked him with his decoy replicas. During the fight, all the power in the Metropolis Zone cut off, thanks to the Freedom Fighters shutting down the Oil Ocean Zone. Eggman then fled to his Death Egg and Sonic gave pursuit, calling Tails via radio to pick him up. Doing this with dramatic timing, the duo flew off in the sky to find a giant flying fortress. Sonic noted the ship was a decoy though, seeing a space shuttle that just emerged, and to Tails' horror, he jumped from the plane and grabbed the shuttle.[188]

Once on-board the Death Egg, Sonic saw through a window that the whole world was falling apart. Eggman confirmed this, adding that robotizing the whole planet with the Death Egg would "cement" the dimensional breaches and make everything his "robotic slave" . Sonic then had a flashback of all his major fights with Eggman and attacked the doctor, only to be overwhelmed by his Egg Destroyer Battlesuit. Sonic was soon thrown down by the explosion of the shuttle, and Eggman prepared to finish him off, but not before telling him the station was powered by all the Chaos Emeralds. Seeing a broken power line, Sonic grabbed it, and used it to transform into Super Sonic. With his new power, Sonic easily dispatched Eggman's attacks, enraging the doctor. When Snively yelled at Eggman that the planet was way beyond saving, Super Sonic smashed the battle suit into a wall and grabbed some power lines to get all the Chaos power possible to use Chaos Control and reset everything to normal. With this done, Sonic said to Sally that he would see her on the other side while the world washed away in white...[188]

Effects of a Reset World[]

After the Genesis scenario, Sonic found himself in front on Silver Sonic III, ten seconds before the white flash. As he remembered what happened before, he smacked the robot away, rushed to Sally, saved her from the cannon's fire, and damaged Silver Sonic in the process. They then arrived in a large room where they are greeted by Dr. Eggman, who revealed his world roboticizer to the duo. Sonic laughed, reminding the doctor that the Bem made sure their de-robotization was permanent, which Eggman retaliated that the previous white flash negated the issue, rendering everything and everyone vulnerable again. Thinking about his family and friends, Sonic attempted to attack Eggman, but was knocked down by another Metal Sonic model. When the damaged Silver Sonic arrived on the scene, Sonic began to struggle against the two robots. During the fight, he noticed that Eggman was after Sally, who had something planned to stop the roboticizer, and immediately spin dashed through his Egg Mobile, destroying it to buy her some time. As Eggman ordered Snively to fire the world roboticizer, Sonic, along with Eggman, realized something was wrong as the beam hit the main deck, which caused an enormous explosion which destroyed the world roboticizer in the process. Sonic emerged from the rubble holding Metal Sonic's head, proceeded to knock a burned and battered Eggman to the floor, and as he taunted him over his defeat, a robot hand emerged from the wreckage. Sonic turned around and, to his horror, saw that Sally had been roboticized.[189]

Trashtalkin

Mecha Sally turns on Sonic, from Sonic the Hedgehog #231.

As Mecha Sally grabbed Sonic by the throat, he started to beg her to fight back from Eggman's grasp, but to no avail. Sonic is then taken to the Death Egg's disposal chute and thrown out by Mecha Sally under orders from Eggman. As Sonic fell, he was saved by Tails in midair using the Tornado. After explaining to some degree what happened to Sally, they continued to pursue the Death Egg. However, after both the Tornado and the Freedom Fighter Special were shot down by the Egg Annihilator Beam, Sonic, along with Tails, went to check up on the other passengers to find out if they were okay, then proceeded to immediately go after the Death Egg, only to be stopped by Tails and Amy, who stated that they needed him in the city. As Sonic entered the city with the others after Titan Metal Sonic's destruction and the Death Egg's retreat, he heard cheers coming from the outside of the castle, but quickly realizes that they are not for him and the Freedom Fighters.[190]

Beginning of Team Fighters[]

To his horror, the cheering was for Ixis Naugus. As Elias and Naugus argued over who would be best suited for the people as king, Sonic angrily stepped in and tried to remind the people that Naugus was the "bad guy", and inform them that Sally was roboticized. As Naugus conferred with Suguna, Sonic proceeded to inform the king of their current situation. He could only watch in outrage as Naugus manipulated Elias' stress over the issue of his sister's robotizication, and as Geoffrey snatches the crown to dub Naugus as king. Sonic questioned Geoffery's motive for this, asking him if he really cared about anything Sally had done, which St. John brushed off. As Amy reminded Naugus that his efforts to "save" the city had left Bunnie to be mostly crystallized, they followed the newly crowned Naugus and the ecstatic townspeople to the Tommy Turtle Memorial Hospital per request of Elias. In an effort to try and expose Naugus for the evil he is, Sonic asked Nicole to open the wall for the people to see his efforts to heal Bunnie, briefly expressing concern for the A.I.'s lack of vocal response as she did so. To his surprise, the Ixis wizard's magic not only removed the crystallization effects, but restored her robotic limbs back to her regular flesh and blood! A little bit irritated at Geoffrey's smug attitude about the whole ordeal making Naugus look good, Sonic responded that at least Bunnie benefited from it.[191]

Walking out from the hospital with Tails and Amy, he asked them to fill in the council on what had happened so far before running off, claiming that he may have a rescue plan for Sally. Rushing over to Freedom HQ, he asks Nicole to patch him through to Angel Island so he could see Knuckles. With no vocal response from Nicole once more, he asked if she was there. He was answered with a wall of text bluntly expressing her sorrow over the loss of her handheld and of Sally. He responded that he had a plan for getting her back, but needed to get to Angel Island in order to do so. She does so, as he promised to talk with her as soon as he came back. Stepping onto Angel Island, he bluntly informed Rad Red that he needed a Warp Ring. Forced to explain the his reasoning, the Hedgehog faced Knuckles' anger upon informing the Guardian of Sally's loss. He then requested a Warp Ring so that he could attempt a rescue, only to be refused for various reasons. In order to use it, Sonic would have had to know exactly where he was attempting to travel to, which was a trap-filled battle station, and they couldn't risk allowing the Warp Ring technology to fall into Robotnik's hands. Furious, Sonic questioned whether they would have agreed had it had something to do with helping the Brotherhood of Guardians, only to be informed that their own efforts to reach the group using a Warp Ring had failed. Returning home, Sonic received his first good news of the day: Tails' announcement that Antoine had arrested Geoffrey for treason.[191]

Unfortunately, New Mobotropolis soon fell victim to another attack as the Battle Bird Armada arrived to invade the city. Having had his fill of setbacks, Sonic determined to fight the Armada,[192] and ended up going after their new allies and his old enemies, the Babylon Rouges, by himself. After a brief battle, Sonic found himself trapped in an energy bubble created by the Gravity Ring, leaving him unable to attack his enemies. Escaping the force field, he managed to return to the city just in time to witness the Armada's Battle Fortress destroying Castle Acorn.[193] Not slowing down, he followed the Rogues into the crater, only to be trapped in yet another force field bubble. Escaping again, he followed them into the control room of Babylon Garden, an ancient spacecraft that had been buried beneath the site on which New Mobotropolis was created by A.D.A.M. After a brief battle, Sonic destroyed the craft's power source after it had risen from the crater. His mission accomplished, he returned to New Mobotropolis, leaving Babylon Garden and the Battle Fortress to crash into the nearby Gigan Mountains.[194]

After investigating the destruction of the Battle Bird Armada with Tails, Sonic returned to the city for Geoffrey's trial, where Geoffrey explained that he had been in league with Naugus since the days of the Great War. Though Geoffrey was ultimately found guilty, Naugus took advantage of his new status to grant him a royal pardon.[195]

Subsequently, Sonic and the Freedom Fighters made plans to escort Elias and his family to the Feral Forest for their own safety. However, as they departed, they were attacked by Eggman's upgrated Egg Pawns, along with Metal Sonic v3.6 and an upgraded Mecha Sally; in the ensuing skirmish, Sonic once again attempted to reach Sally, but it failed. When Eggman ordered Metal Sonic to latch onto the Mobo-Cruiser and self-destruct, Antoine bravely restrained the robot and was caught in the blast; with Eggman choosing to depart, Sonic quickly rushed Antoine back to New Mobotropolis.[196]

Antoine was left in a critical coma, and Sonic was left guilt-ridden over all the times he picked on Antoine. When Silver returned, now believing Antoine to be the traitor, Sonic literally dragged Silver by the spines to the hospital to show him Antoine's body, informing him of Antoine's sacrifice and subsequently noticing a note from Bunnie, revealing that Bunnie, blaming herself for Antoine's injuries, had left to "make things right." When Silver subsequently suggested that Bunnie was the traitor, Sonic snapped and furiously told Silver that there was no traitor, that he believed in his friends, and that all of them were bigger heroes than a "flake" like Silver could ever hope to be, before harshly ordering Silver to leave; Silver apologetically did so. After Geoffrey arrived to pay his own respects to Antoine, Sonic sadly remarked that Silver was right about one thing: the Freedom Fighters were finished.[197]

While brooding over his losses at Freedom HQ, Tails and Amy arrived and managed to cheer him up. At that moment, Rotor appeared and revealed that the Council had removed Nicole, while he was no longer a member himself. Approaching the Council, the group successfully convinced them to approve two new Freedom Fighter groups: Team Freedom, who would protect New Mobotropolis from internal threats, and Team Fighters, who would hunt down Eggman and his forces. Team Fighters, consisting of Sonic, Tails, and Amy, quickly rushed off to Furville to thwart Eggman's plans to roboticize and/or legionize the population there, their efforts convincing the citizens to fight back as well. Eggman was ultimately forced to retreat to his Shazamazon base, but Sonic overheard the location through Mecha Sally's radio.[198]

Trailing the Death Egg to Soumerca, Sonic and his teammates learned that Queen Hathor and Lupe had been abducted, and that the Felidae and Wolf Pack blamed each other for the disappearance of their leader. Recognizing Eggman's hand in the event, the team-joined by Leeta and Lyco of the Wolf Pack-set out to rescue the missing rulers. Their search led them to Hathor, who with Lupe's help had managed to escape but had been forced to shed her royal robes. In compliance with the traditions of her people, she identified herself as an emissary rather than the queen, and agreed to lead Sonic's group-along with the Felidae warriors who joined them-to the Legion base nearby where Lupe was still a prisoner.[199] The heroes found themselves facing off with the Legionnaires and Mecha Sally, who had been responsible for the kidnapping. Though they pulled off a successful rescue, the Death Egg managed to escape and Mecha Sally with it. However, Tails managed to plant a tracking device on the giant craft which would allow them to pursue it without much difficulty.[200]

Following the Death Egg back in the direction of New Mobotropolis, Team Fighters was forced to stop in Feral Forest when Eggman dropped an invasion force. While protecting the people from Egg Swats, Sonic spotted Mecha Sally, and quickly deduced with his friends that she had been sent to assassinate her own brother. Sonic moved to confront her, only to be challenged by a new Silver Sonic v3.0. Sonic engaged his giant-sized doppelganger, but was unable to defeat the robot despite tricking it into destroying several Egg Swats. Unexpected help came in the form of Tails' robot T-Pup, who threw up a stasis field around Silver Sonic. Mecha Sally, her objective unrealized, left to rejoin the Death Egg, and despite wanting to pursue her Sonic was forced to remain behind in order to engage the remaining Egg Swats. After saving the village, Sonic learned to his surprise and anger that Elias wasn't available to see them, only to be confronted by Tails, who encouraged him to drop the issue. Relenting, Sonic and his friends transmitted news of the Death Egg's approach to New Mobotropolis.[201][202]

Albion and Beyond[]

Heading towards Mercia, Sonic and the team were challenged by defenses sent by the Death Egg. An unpleasant surprise came in the form of the Krudzu Hybrid Hydra fused with a Titan Metal Sonic model. However, the trio of friends were able to overcome their enemy with a tandem attack, Amy adding impetus to Sonic's spinning attack with her hammer while Tails locked onto him with missiles from the Tornado. Defeated, the monstrous robot fell into the ocean, but Sonic and the others had little time to celebrate as they realized the target of Eggman's next attack: Albion, last settlement of free Echidnas.[203] More airborne Egg Swats emerged to engage the heroes, but were handily defeated, allowing the team to go to the aid of the Echidnas.[204]

Sonic and his friends were then attacked by a new foe: Metal Knuckles, who proved its abilities by thwarting Sonic's efforts to take it down and damaging the Tornado. Forced to make a crash landing, Sonic and his friends left T-Pup to repair the plane, trusting that they would be able to catch up to the Death Egg later thanks to their tracking device on it. They soon ran into the Echidna Dark Egg Legion, and took out one of their tanks before being joined by Remington and his troops. After making introductions, the group retreated to Remington's base, where Remington brought them up to date on the situation. While Remington had good news in the form of plans to relocate to Mercia for safety, Sonic brought bad news in revealing the apparent demise of the Brotherhood of Guardians. The heroes resolved to rescue Matriarch Lara-Le, Knuckles' mother, and the rest of the Echidnas who had been taken captive. However, their attack ran into a number of snags: first a reactivated defense system, then new cybernetic powers exhibited by Lien-Da, and finally the return of Metal Knuckles.[205]

The battle came to a halt when Tails, attempting to shut down the defense systems that the Legion was employing against them, accidentally set off an electrical charge that knocked most of Albion's inhabitants unconscious, including Team Fighters. While unconscious, they were discovered by Thrash the Tasmanian Devil, a former member of the Downunda Freedom Fighters, who laid the heroes aside before embarking on his mission to banish the Echidnas to parts unknown using a Warp Ring. Knuckles arrived and joined up with his friends, and quickly pieced together that something was wrong: not only were all the other Echidnas in Albion missing, but the remaining Chaotix on Angel Island failed to respond to communications. After ruling out Dr. Finitevus as a suspect, given that he would have killed Sonic for interfering in his plans, Knuckles determined that Thrash might be involved. The group of four found the Tasmanian Devil just as he was finishing his villainous task, and he thanked Knuckles for the Warp Ring, confessing what he had done with it-not only in banishing the Albionites but in dispatching Julie-Su and Saffron Bee as well in order to super charge his ring with the Master Emerald. Appalled at his actions, Sonic and Knuckles then teamed up to face their newest enemy.[206]

With Knuckles facing Thrash one-on-one, Sonic and his teammates went up against Thrash's Devil Dog pack. When the savage Mobians started ganging up on the Echidna, he requested Sonic's help in keeping them penned up. Calling upon Tails and Amy, Sonic requested that they subdue and drive the Devils with a spinning attack that both possessed, though there was some initial confusion due to there not being a proper name for the move. While they did this, Sonic gathered materials from around the ruined city and used them to build an "insta-kennel", trapping the Devil Dogs. Complimenting his teammates on a job well done, Sonic found Amy somewhat disoriented and curious as to how he performed maneuvers like that all the time without becoming sick. With Thrash defeated by Knuckles, the heroes were ready to bring back the Echidnas-only for Metal Knuckles to attack, now as the host of the Krudzu Hybrid Hydra. Despite being weakened by their battle, Sonic and Team Fighters managed to rally against the mechanical monster while Knuckles pursued an escaping Thrash through the latter's Warp Ring. Sonic's confidence that the Krudzu couldn't defeat them without any Badniks to absorb fell through as it incorporated remnants of Albion's technology into its body, becoming a towering monstrosity. However, their attacker was then stunned by an attack-but not as stunned as the members of Team Fighters when they recognized their newest ally as none other than Shard the Metal Sonic.[207]

Recognizing his old enemy, Sonic led his teammates in attacking Shard, who tried to convince them that he was on their side. The Krudzu Hybrid Hydra recovered in the midst of their fight, and grabbed a hold of both Sonic and Shard, who finally convinced Sonic that he was there to help. The two set off at top speed, dragging the Hydra behind them, with Sonic joking about Shard's ability to keep up with him. As they ran, Sonic pressed Shard for information, but Shard refused to give any straight answers, even about his own return. The irate Sonic asked how he could trust the robot, to which Shard replied with the counter question of whether he could trust Uncle Chuck, confusing Sonic further. Despite this, Sonic and Shard exchanged friendly banter as they dragged the Hydra into further battle with Tails, Amy, and Thrash's Devil Dog pack. Eviscerating the monster and leaving behind only a tiny sprig, Sonic picked it up but was then interrupted by Shard, and Sonic assumed that the robot's anticipated betrayal had come. However, the truth was anything but: Shard wished to take the sprig back to New Mobotropolis to see if it could be turned into a De-Roboticizing agent for Sally. Deciding to trust his new friend, Sonic then turned his attention to comforting a distraught Amy, promising that they would find a way to resolve all the evil that had taken place. With Shard's help, the team got the Tornado up and running and continued following the Death Egg towards the Northern Tundra.[208]

Sonic and his teammates arrived in the tundra shortly thereafter and joined up with the Arctic Freedom Fighters, who reported Eggman's actions since docking at a local Egg Bunker. Once Erma had disabled the bunker's alarms, Sonic led the united teams in a charge into the facility, where they engaged a number of Egg Swats. They were then surprised by the arrival of Silver, whom Sonic was none too happy to see, still resentful of Silver's accusations against his teammates. All but ignoring Silver's apologies and protests that he had at last figured it out, Sonic demanded that he leave, only for Silver to plead for another chance, citing that he had help. After he remarked that he couldn't identify his associates, Tails asked whether the "true king" was involved, surprising both Hedgehogs. Tails then vouched for Silver, earning suspicion from Sonic, who reluctantly agreed to hear Silver out despite not getting an explanation from Tails. After hearing Silver's story of the supposed traitor again, and that he was supposedly running out of time to stop them-something that Sonic found ironic, given that he was a time traveler-Silver reminded him of the sorrowful state of both the Freedom Fighters and the world, before going on to explain that he had learned the identity of the traitor thanks to outside help.[209]

Silver Stops Mecha Sally

Mecha Sally is stopped but a new problem starts, from Sonic the Hedgehog #247.

Sonic was enraged when Silver claimed that Sally was the traitor, but was convinced to hear the time traveler out. Silver then explained that Sally's heroic actions had inadvertently led to the devastation in his time, and that her role as an enslaved pawn had been forgotten in the centuries of trouble in between. After he further explained his intentions to help save Sally, Sonic agreed to let him come along. The group ran into difficulties while traveling through an underwater passageway, and ended up engaging Akhlut and his Legion in battle. Making their way into the underbelly of the Death Egg, they were attacked by Mecha Sally and several Egg Swats. The Robian attempted to eliminate Sonic but was neutralized by Silver's powers. However, all of Mobius was then hit by the second Genesis Wave.[209]

Fighting for Two Worlds[]

Note: Due to the Genesis Wave, Sonic's history from this point was changed to be nearly identical to that of his game counterpart.

Sonic once again found himself running through the Green Hill Zone when he felt a sudden sense of déjà vu, similar to what he had felt there previously. He shook off the feeling and focused on the task at hand: finding his missing friends. Earlier on, he'd gone to Tails' workshop where the young fox should've been getting ready to set off on a journey through the Mystic Ruins with him, only to find that his best buddy was nowhere to be seen, his bag of supplies spilled out across the floor. Worried about his friend, Sonic then flew the Tornado to Angel Island to get Knuckles to help him search for the young fox, but instead was surprised to find that the Guardian of the Master Emerald was not at his post. Finally, Sonic headed over to Amy's house, with the intention of asking for her help (noting that she'd be good at finding them as she seems always able to track Sonic down easily), but sure enough, the pink hedgehog had also vanished. Realizing that something bad had happened, he approached the Chaotix for help, asking them to join the search.[210]

Copy Robot Captures Silver

Sonic watches as "Mega Man" attacks Silver.

Sonic was briefly joined in his search by Silver the Hedgehog, who informs him that he felt a disturbance in space-time that he had traced back to this point. Sonic questions whether Silver had, like him, acted upon a gut feeling that something was wrong, much to Silver's surprise. The two hedgehogs both come to the conclusion that Dr. Eggman is most likely the cause of whatever is wrong, moments before Silver is shot down by a mysterious blue-armored boy wearing a purple scarf in front of Sonic's very eyes. Sonic gave chase after the mystery assailant, remarking that he should've shot him while he had the chance. After a long chase, the armored boy quickly ducked out of sight at the very moment Mega Man was approaching their location, himself chasing Metal Sonic. Mistaking the true Mega Man with the imposter he'd been chasing, Sonic strikes the boy-robot with a spindash as Metal Sonic and the boy disappear from sight. After cheering that he'd knocked the scarf right off of him, Mega Man, in turn mistaking Sonic for the strange blue blur he'd been chasing, proceeded to shoot at Sonic with his Mega Buster Cannon, sparking a fierce brawl between the two.[210]

Sonic Attacks Mega Man

Sonic and Mega Man begin to battle.

As their fight proceeded, Sonic bragged about having taken down hundreds of robots in the past; when the fight appeared to be a stalemate, Sonic decided to use the surroundings to his advantage, running through Green Hill Zone's loops to boost into Mega Man and then bounce around him in the springs before knocking him off his feet, only to be punched back by the Blue Bomber. Suddenly, a Warp Ring portal appeared behind the heroic robot, created by Mega Man's father, Dr. Light; this distracted Mega Man long enough for Sonic to disable his Mega Buster. Mega Man then tricked Sonic into following him through the portal and they (along with Tails Man) arrived back in Mega City. Sonic wondered if he was in a place he knew on his planet, though quickly guessed that such was not the case, as Mega Man called his friends Tango, Eddie, Beat and Rush to his aid.[211]

MM 25 Awesome Alliles

Sonic and Mega Man team up.

The two heroes continued their fight, Mega Man repairing his Buster and taking to the air against Sonic with Beat and Rush's aid. Tango's use of a spin dash-esque attack only riled Sonic further. However, as the battle began to endanger civilians, Mega Man again attempted to reason with Sonic, only to be confused as Sonic accused him for Copybot's crimes. As they argued, Tails Man attacked them on Eggman's and Wily's orders. This forced them to put aside their feud to protect nearby civilians and engage the Roboticized Master. Unexpectedly, their combined attacks-Sonic Spin-Dash and Mega Man's charged shot-immobilized the Robian, and Mega Man's weapon copying powers restored Tails to normal. Comparing notes, the two heroes quickly realized the truth: that their respective nemeses Eggman and Dr. Wily had joined forces, and that each had been framed-Sonic by Metal Sonic and Mega Man by Copybot. With that issue settled, Sonic suggested they meet with Mega Man's creator, Dr. Light, and they teleported to Light Labs. Unfortunately, they arrived just in time to see the doctor being kidnapped by Metal Sonic and his new partner, Bass. Quickly resolving that they had to save the doctor and Sonic's other missing friends, the pair and Tails teamed up with Mega Man, Rush, and Mega Man's "brother" Proto Man. With Tails' genius at work, they managed to create a portal that allowed them to enter the doctors' Skull Egg Zone.[212]

Making their way deeper into the bizarre zone, which combined elements from both their worlds, the heroes soon ran into opposition: Copybot, backed by the Genesis Unit. The group's name struck a chord in Sonic, but he had little time to think on it as the trio of Robot Masters attacked. The heroes split up, with Sonic taking on the monkey-like Buster Rod G, who brought back vague memories of fighting Monkey Khan. Sonic was quick to insult the robot. The fight was quickly ended thanks to Mega Man's new weapon-acquired from Tails Man-and the group's team effort. Mega Man and Proto Man then noted the strangeness of the Copybot and Genesis Unit returning, as intelligent robots from their world were incredibly complex and nearly impossible to rebuild. Moving on, the heroes encountered further strange activity, as well as a new threat: a team of eight Roboticized Masters.[213] After a brief battle, Proto Man left and drew most of the group off, leaving Sonic and the others to deal with Vector Man, Espio Man, and Charmy Man. Remembering their defeat of Tails Man, the remaining heroes resolved upon a strategy: Tails would modify the Mega Buster to emulate Sonic's Spin-Dash, and Sonic would run interference. The tactic worked, and the three detectives were soon restored to normal.[214]

Memories Returning

Sonic and Mega Man remember the old reality.

Sonic's group continued their journey, but soon ran into another obstacle: the Roboticized Shadow, known as Shadow Man, and his Robot Master ninja partner, also known as Shadow Man. After some confusion caused by the shared name, the heroes engaged the two villains, and managed to restore Shadow to normal only to have him destroy Shadow Man, who had been frozen by the weapon Mega Man had acquired from Shadow. When offered a chance to join their quest or help find Proto Man, Shadow declined both and disappeared using Chaos Control. The warping of space-time rekindled lost memories for the heroes, making Sonic remember that Eggman had altered reality before, and making him dread the possible effects of a second Genesis Wave. Determined to undo the damage that had been done, the heroes pressed on only to meet Silver Man and Blaze Woman. Sonic and Tails engaged the fire-wielding robot, but fortunately were quickly relieved by a restored Silver and Mega Man. With his two friends deciding to rest and regain their strength for the coming battle, Sonic and the others continued forward to find the remaining Masters.[215] Soon afterwards, they met the pair-Rose Woman and Knuckles Man-who had been ordered to destroy them at all costs, including self-destruction. Fortunately, they were able to return the two to normal, and after ribbing Knuckles and being tackle-hugged by Amy, Sonic laid out their game plan. Tails and Knuckles left to join Proto Man and the Chaotix, Mega Man and Rush departed to collect Silver and Blaze, and Sonic and Amy took off to find Shadow.[216]

With their allies assembled-and joined by Shadow's fellow Team Dark member E-123 Omega-the heroes massed at the Wily Egg, where they were confronted by a massive army of Robot Masters, much to Sonic's delight. Sonic threw himself into the battle and continued to provide assistance to his allies while encouraging an anxious Mega Man about their efforts to rescue his father. He was soon targeted by a squadron of high speed Robot Masters-Slash Man, Charge Man, Metal Man, Turbo Man, and Nitro Man-but found his most entertaining opponent in Quick Man. After tripping up the Robot Master, Sonic helped Mega Man restore Rouge Woman-the newest Roboticized Master-to normal before going on a fighting spree across the battlefield. At Shadow and Proto Man's suggestion, however, Sonic broke off from the fight with Tails, Mega Man, and Rush to board the Wily Egg. Just as they were heading to board the flying fortress, however, they spotted Dr. Light plummeting towards certain death from its underside.[217]

Shadow was able to use Chaos Control to save Dr. Light and teleported him onto the battlefield to help the others. Tails was able to hack into the systems and teleported them into the Wily Egg. Once inside, Sonic and Mega Man bantered about the Wily Egg's interior defenses, which were inspired by features from both Death Egg and a typical Wily Castle. At that moment, they ran into the Mega Man Killers. As the two sides engaged, one Mega Man Killer, Punk, used a spin dash-like move to combat Sonic, much to the hedgehog's annoyance. Eventually, Sonic tricked Punk into crashing into his own teammate, Enker. He and Tails then attacked Ballade, but while Sonic managed to land a hit, Tails was hit at point-blank range by one of Ballade's bombs. With Tails too badly hurt to go on, Sonic and Mega Man had Rush carry him out of the Wily Egg. The blue heroes continued further into the Wily Egg, with Mega Man trying to assure Sonic that Tails would be alright. They soon ran into further resistance in the form of the Chaos Devil, which quickly overwhelmed them. Luckily, Duo arrived and saved them. With Duo keeping the Chaos Devil busy, the blue heroes made the last leg of their trek through the Wily Egg, stopping at a Wily/Eggman-themed boss door. On the other side of said door, the power seemed to go out, making Sonic wonder if they had already won. Just then, however, he and Mega Man were ambushed by Bass, Metal Sonic, and Treble.[218]

SU 54 P3-4

Sonic and Mega Man face their rivals.

Sonic immediately engaged Metal Sonic while Mega Man fought Bass and Treble. Reaching a stalemate with their dark rivals, the blue heroes, realizing they were only being stalled to buy the doctors time, decided to try the old "mix-and-match" strategy of switching opponents. However, this plan almost immediately backfired; Metal Sonic disoriented Mega Man with his speed, while Bass fired too rapidly for Sonic to get in the mid-battle banter he favored. The two then decided to gang up on their rivals one at a time, with Mega Man using all of the abilities he gained from the Roboticized Masters while Sonic kept up the pressure. Bass was the first to go down, followed by Treble, and then Metal Sonic.[219]

Soon after this, Eggman and Wily burst into the room in their powerful new battle mech, the Egg-Wily Machine-X. Fatigued from the fight with their rivals, Sonic and Mega Man were quickly beaten and knocked unconscious. They later awakened to find themselves imprisoned in containment pods within the heart of the Wily Egg, face-to-face with the evil doctors and the gathered Chaos Emeralds. It was then that Eggman and Wily horrified the blue heroes with the truth of their master plan: to unleash a "Super Genesis Wave" to not only completely remake their universes in their image, but also erase their enemies from existence.[219] As Mega Man tried to reason with Wily, Sonic, struggling to free himself from his prison, inquired to Eggman if he was worried about reality breaking due to his and Wily's tampering with Space-Time.[220]

SSSM

Sonic and Mega Man go Super.

Just as all had begun to seem hopeless, however, Knuckles, Proto Man, Dr. Light, and Rush broke into the Wily Egg. There, the red heroes attacked Eggman and Wily while Dr. Light freed Sonic and Mega Man. At Light's suggestion, Mega Man fused with Rush to don the Super Adaptor. Inspired by the word "super" Sonic had Mega Man hoist both of them up to the Genesis Reactor, where the Chaos Emeralds were. Then, as the Super Genesis Wave activated, the blue heroes absorbed the Emeralds' power to become Super Sonic and Super Armor Mega Man.[220]

Prime Zone Shatters

Sonic's Chaos Control is disrupted by Eggman.

After preventing the evil doctors from killing Knuckles and Proto Man, Mega Man and Sonic instructed them to evacuate Dr. Light and have Duo fall back. A huge battle ensued between the two sides, ending with Sonic and Mega Man emerging victorious. By then, the Super Genesis Wave was already starting to reshape all reality, so Sonic taught Mega Man how to use Chaos Control to restore their worlds to normal. However, Eggman, unwilling to accept defeat, attacked Sonic while his Chaos Control was still charging. After getting Mega Man to restore Earth 20XX, Sonic turned his attention to restoring his own world, which proved to be easier said than done as he struggled to focus Chaos Control under Eggman's assault. Realizing it was all or nothing now, Sonic used Chaos Control. Due to Eggman's interference, however, it was clear something awful was now about to happen to Mobius. As Sonic wondered what Eggman had done, white light consumed them both...[220]

Note: From this point, Sonic's history continues from his new life in the altered timeline.
