The barrier[1] (電子ウォール[2] denshi u~ōru?, lit. "electronic wall") is an obstacle that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They serve as network security defenses in both the United Federation and Dr. Eggman's cyberspaces.

Description[]

The barriers are digital defense mechanisms set to keep any intruders out of a network.[1] In cyberspace, they take the appearance of translucent green squares with surfaces resembling circuit boards.

The platform variant of the barriers, from Shadow the Hedgehog.

In Shadow the Hedgehog, the barriers appear in Mad Matrix and Digital Circuit. In this game, they serve two primary purposes. In the first case, they act as walls that will suddenly emerge and barricade passages to prevent the player from moving forward. In the second case, they act as platforms for the player to stand on, allowing travel across bottomless pits. In either case, the barriers can be destroyed after a certain number of hits with any attack. Upon taking damage, these barriers will gradually turn yellow, then red, followed by a luminecent yellow before shattering. It is ideal to only destroy those that block the player's path, as destroying the platform variants will only give trouble for the player.
