The Earth Dragon, also known as the Red Dragon,[1] is a character that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a red-colored dragon that resides within Dragon's Lair.

Appearance[]

Although hard to tell, the Earth Dragon is a dragon, and is mostly red and brown with a crystal-like yellow horn on top of its head. Its jaw and the skin under its neck and torso are peach-colored.

History[]

Sonic and the Black Knight[]

While Sonic, Sir Lancelot, Sir Gawain and Sir Percival traveled to find the barrier stone at their assigned areas, Sonic traveled to Dragon's Lair, only to find that the barrier stone was guarded by the Earth Dragon. Despite the Earth Dragon assaulting Sonic with his fire breath, Sonic defeated it with the help of Caliburn, and activated the barrier stone.

Powers and abilities[]

The Earth Dragon creating an earthquake.

Like the traditional dragon, the Earth Dragon possesses the ability to spew fire. An advanced user of this skill, it can spew out small fireballs which can split into a rain of smaller fireballs, or shoot enormous blasts of fire. It has as well a strong roar which can create winds so powerful that it can blow its opponents hundred of meters away. In addition, it is very physically strong, capable of causing wide earthquakes by simply smashing its head into the ground.

Battle[]

Boss guide[]

After the player runs through a short passage and automatically jumps off a cliff, the dragon will appear in a hole on the other side of cave. The player must reach there while dodging enemies and large fireballs that are shot from the dragon's mouth. These fireballs cannot be guarded to avoid damage so the player must sidestep to avoid them. After the player reaches the dragon, they will jump on the Earth Dragon's head where they must slash its horn a few times to proceed to the next cavern. If the player takes too long to do this they will be knocked off the Earth Dragon and be blown back. The player must repeat the process twice to defeat it. In each subsequent encounter, it becomes more resistant to the player's attacks, requiring more slashes to defeat it. In the second cavern, the Earth Dragon's uses a second attack where it fires two fireballs positioned near itself which releases numerous smaller fireballs continuously before disappearing. In the third cavern, the Earth Dragon uses both types of its previous attacks and in addition, it will slam it its head into the ground, creating earthquakes in parts of the ground, damaging the player if they are hit by the shockwaves. There is also a large pillar on the right side of the third cavern section near the Earth Dragon that if attacked enough times, will defeat the dragon in one hit, regardless of its health. The dragon seems to know this weakness however, as it will roar and blow the player backwards if they remain near it for too long.

Similar to the Mist Dragon, the "Dragon Slayer" and "Dragon Slayer+1" Skills in some weapons can make it easier to defeat the Earth Dragon.

Trivia[]

  • Before the battle begins, the Earth Dragon gets out of its cave and eats a red Fish-One.
  • One of Sonic's lines when encountering the Earth Dragon, "This brings back memories. Except last time, I was with Shadow", makes a reference to the Finalhazard from Sonic Adventure 2.
