Master Hiyoko's brood return in threes

— Description, Sonic the Hedgehog Encyclo-speed-ia

The Mecha Hiyoko[1] (メカヒヨコ[2] Meka Hiyoko?, lit. "Mecha Chick") is an enemy in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, chick-based Badnik model created by Dr. Robotnik.

Appearance[]

Mecha Hiyokos are a small bird-like and bullet-shaped Badniks. In their first games, they had a silvery metallic body, black eyes, a small yellow beak and (in gameplay) minor blue and orange details. In official artwork, they also had small wings and small flat feet.

In Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble, the Mecha Hiyokos' design were slightly altered. Here, they have a purple metallic body, a pointy nose, and a small white and red spring underneath them.

Game appearances[]

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit)[]

Hiyokosprite

In their first appearance in the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, this Badnik is unnamed in the instruction manuals and any supplementary material. In this game, Mecha Hiyokos appear only during the boss fight with the Hiyoko Master in Sky High Zone Act 3.

In gameplay, the Mecha Hiyokos have no form of offensive, but will bounce towards Sonic to inflict touch-based damage. The player can easily defeat these Badniks with the Spin Jump.

At the beginning of the boss fight, two enemy waves, each consisting of four Mecha Hiyokos, will be launched from below the cloud arena to swarm Sonic. After defeating them, the player falls down to a lower cloud arena with egg-shaped generators that produce Mecha Hiyokos. While being attacked by Mecha Hiyokos, the player has to destroy the generators to make the Hiyoko Master appear. When destroying a Mecha Hiyoko, no Animals will pop out of them.

Sonic Chaos[]

In Sonic Chaos, Mecha Hiyokos are unnamed in the instruction manuals and any supplementary material, only described as "strange creatures" in the game's description of Aqua Planet Zone, the sole level they appear in.

In gameplay, they are always found in groups of three, though they can be destroyed individually with the Spin Jump or Spin Attack. Their attack pattern is simply hopping along the ground towards the player to inflict touch-based damage.

At the beginning of the fight with the Sphere-o-Bot Boss, Mecha Hiyokos will appear which the player must clear out to make the boss emerge. When the Sphere-o-Bot Boss is one hit away from being defeated, it will launch Mecha Hiyokos as missiles around the arena. When destroying a Mecha Hiyoko, no Animals will pop out of it.

Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble[]

Mecha Hiyoko

In Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble, this Badnik is referred to as Mecha Hiyoko (メカヒヨコ[2] Meka Hiyoko?, lit. "Mecha Chick"). In this game, they appear in Atomic Destroyer Zone and usually in groups.

Like in earlier games, their attack pattern includes simply hopping around. In gameplay, Mecha Hiyokos will start popping out of Badnik generators when the playable character activates a button. When destroying a Mecha Hiyoko, no Animals will pop out of them.

Powers and abilities[]

The Mecha Hiyokos are capable of high leaps for their size. They also possess rocket thrusters for flight which turn them into missiles.

Trivia[]

  • "Hiyoko" (ヒヨコ?) is the Japanese word for "baby chick."
  • This Badnik is one of the few reoccurring enemies originating from the 8-bit titles.
  • Mecha Hiyokos are notable for being the first ever enemy in the Sonic the Hedgehog series that are required to be killed in order to progress through the game.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble is the only game that Mecha Hiyokos appear in that does not force the player to kill them in order to progress.
    • It is also the only game they appear in where they are not featured in a boss battle.
