The Great Crater[1] is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. It is a prominent feature of the continent of Downunda, and the former location of Angel Island.

Description[]

Originally, the Great Crater appeared simply as a crater in the terrain of Downunda, with several underground tunnels leading to its basin, however, following Crocbot's takeover, several large buildings and a prison were built on the basin, all of which were eventually destroyed by the Downunda Freedom Fighters. Following the Dark Egg Legion's takeover, several smaller buildings were constructed, along with a large statue of Dr. Eggman, which was also destroyed by the Downunda Freedom Fighters.[2][3][1]

History[]

Past[]

The Great Crater was created when Jordann and Kayla-La used the power of the Chaos Emeralds to lift a piece of the continent into the sky, bringing it out of the trajectory path of the White Comet, and creating the Great Crater on the island's former site. At some point, Athair took up residence in the Great Crater as a mystic, from which he would commune with the Ancient Walkers.[2]

Southern Crossover[]

An injured Tails was eventually brought to the Great Crater by Walt Wallaby, who hoped that Athair would be able to help him. After Athair and the Ancient Walkers explained the creation of the Crater and the prophecy of the Great Harmony to Tails, Barby Koala arrived, and warned Tails about Crocbot's C.D. ROM Ram, at which they both left the crater in pursuit of it. Later, when his Mega-Mecha Tank went out of control due to a Bomberang from Walt, it crashed in the Great Crater, causing a nuclear explosion that fused Crocbot's body to the tank.[2][4]

Knuckles' Quest[]

Tails later brought Knuckles to the Great Crater aboard his Sea Fox, in hopes of finding Athair, who he believed could help Knuckles on his quest to recover the Sword of Acorns. Tails and Knuckles wandered around the Great Crater until they found Athair, who granted them a vision from the Ancient Walkers, regarding the Sword of Acorns' location. After the vision they were both returned to the Great Crater, where they soon parted ways.[5]

Endgame[]

Great crater crocbot

The Great Crater under the control of Crocbot, from Sonic Super Special #6.

Salvaging scrap from Dr. Robotnik's crashed supply blimp, Crocbot created an army of Combots, which he used to transform the Great Crater into a prison camp. The Downunda Freedom Fighters were soon captured and imprisoned in the camp, with Antoine D'Coolette and Bunnie Rabbot soon following. However, they managed to escape, and destroyed the prison camp, and most of Crocbot.[6][7][3][8][9]

The Great Crater was later taken over once again, by the Downunda Dark Egg Legion, and used as a base of operations. Four hook launchers along the crater's rim were fired, and grappled Angel Island, forcing the Downunda Freedom Fighters and the Chaotix to assault the base, once again becoming prisoners of the crater as they were captured. However, due to Duck "Bill" Platypus being a secret double agent, the Freedom Fighters and Chaotix were able to escape, destroy several portions of the base, and free the island.[1][10]
